GILES Died of consumption at 10:30 o'clock yesterday morning at the home of his uncle, D. M. Giles, 107 Fifteenth street, aged 50 years. The deceased was the son of Dr. J. C. and Margaret Giles of Newton Hamilton. When 6 years old he was given into the care of his uncle, D. M. Giles, who reared him and had him educated. April 7, 1862, he enlisted in Company I, Twelfth regiment, Pennsylvania Reserves, and had a fine record as a soldier. He spent nine months in the following Confederate prisons: Libby, Belle Island and Salisbury, N.C. During the '70s he taught school in different places, and later one term in the grammar grade, Emerson building. In 1884 he was elected to the Pennsylvania legislature by the Republicans of Huntingdon county, and served one term. Later he was appointed by Governor Beaver statistical clerk of the common school department, which he held five years, when declining health made him relinquish it. He was a member of the Presbyterian church, and filled the various positions which he held in life with integrity and ability. One brother, W. W. Giles, of Washington, D.C., survives him. Funeral services at the house at 8 o'clock this evening. The remains will be taken to Mapleton tomorrow morning. Altoona Mirror, May 28, 1896 Note: James P.
