One of Huntingdon's Oldest Citizens Passes to His Reward. Special to the TRIBUNE. HUNTINGDON, Pa., February 14. - John Hagey, next to the oldest person residing in Huntingdon, died at his home on Washington street at 12:30 o'clock this morning. He was born June 26, 1808, and was therefore in his 91st year. His friend and companion, John Rhodes, will be 90 years old next month, but Moses Gage, the venerable father of ex-General Manager George F. Gage, of the Broad Top, is the senior of the two named above by several years. He was born in 1800, and is still living with his daughter, Mrs. Thomas Adams, in West Huntingdon. John Hagey was born in Woodcock valley, near McConnellstown, this county. He was a conspicuous figure in the iron industries in Central Pennsylvania many years ago, and was the founder of furnaces in Huntingdon, Blair and Cambria counties. When he located permanently in Huntingdon he was well advanced in years, and here he embarked in the dry goods business, conducting at one time a leading store. Fifteen or more years ago he retired, and since then the uppermost thought of his mind had been religion. He was a devout Christian and surely lived a life that must find its reward in eternal glory. From his own pen this autobiography is obtained: "I was born in Woodcock valley, Huntingdon county, in the year of our Lord June 26, 1808. Embraced religion at a campmeeting in Morrison's Cove, near Williamsburg, on the Biddle ground, now in Blair county, in the year 1829. In August I was taken into the Methodist church by L. H. W. Morrow. I was appointed a class leader in 1830; licensed an exhorter in 1832, and still have a license. I professed sanctification May, 1832, and I profess still to enjoy the blessing. Written February 9, 1885, near Newburg, Cumberland county, Pa. "JOHN HAGEY." The deceased is survived by two daughters. One, Mrs. George Marsh, resides in Altoona; the other is a resident of Nebraska. A sister, Mrs. John Read, of this town, and a brother residing in Martinsburg, Blair county, also survive. His funeral will occur on Friday next, but detailed arrangement have not yet been made. Altoona Tribune, Thursday, February 16, 1899
