Two Huntingdon area young men were killed last night when the motorcycle they were riding crashed into the rear of a station wagon near the Huntingdon Fairgrounds. The accident victims, both dead on arrival at the J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, were identified by State Police as Ronald Ralph Dean, 23, Huntingdon, R.D.1 and Ronald L. Shawver, 23, of 625 Sixth Street, Huntingdon. Both are married men. The 1965 BSA motorcycle on which the men were travelling on the Fairgrounds Road at 10:50 p.m., was demolished in the grinding collision, damage being $600. State Police today are continuing their investigation of the double fatality. There were no eyewitnesses to the crash and State Trooper Kenneth Schlelden said he had not determined who was operating the cycle. The machine belonged to Shawver. Dr. Harry H. Negley, Huntingdon County coroner, said both men suffered fractured skulls and fractured necks. In addition, each man had a broken leg and multiple injuries, including fractured facial bones. Shawver's body was found on the bank on the east side of the highway, 20 1/2 feet from the edge of the road and 40 feet north of the demolished vehicle. Dean's body was draped on the guard fence along the side of the road, 20 feet north of the cycle. Trooper Schlelden said the motorcycle was southbound on the Fairgrounds Road, Legislative Route 31034, in Smithfield Township, 1.5 miles south of Huntingdon. Clarence I. Fisher, of Hesston, R.D.1, operating a 1967 International Scout station wagon, also was southbound, having just pulled from the southern entrance to the fairgrounds. Suddenly the motorcycle ploughed into the rear end of the station wagon causing an estimated $800 damage. The battered motorcycle must have gone down at once since there are gouge marks in the macadam for a distance of more than 70 feet where the cycle continued in a southeasterly direction until it hit the guard fence on the east side of the road. When it stopped, it was facing north, the direction from which it came. The rear of the cycle was wedged under the bottom steel cable with the rear wheel and fender partially wrapped around a steel upright. Fisher was not injured in the mishap. Shawver was an employe of Owens-Corning Fiberglas at Huntingdon, while Dean worked for the Department of Highways. The Huntingdon fireman's ambulance was summoned and it rushed the critically injured men to the hospital where they were pronounced dead. State Troopers Arthur L. Brown and George Plafcan assisted in the investigation and in traffic control at the scene of the fatality. Traffice was a problem for a time since the accident happened when the fairgoers were leaving the exposition grounds located just north of the accident scene.
