Saturday, October 28, 1911; p2. Automobile Victim Dies. Mrs. G. R. Hutchison, One of Three Injured When Machine Turns Turtle, Succumbs. Death last evening claimed Mrs. Mary Ellen Hutchison, of Alexandria, one of the victims of the automobile that turned turtle about two miles from Claysburg on Sunday night, September 17. She passed away at the Altoona hospital last evening at 7 o'clock of basilar meningitis, following a fracture at the base of the skull, sustained when she was hurled out of the machine with three other occupants, one of whom, Mrs. W. E. Kenega, wife of the manager of the Federal Refractories Company of Alexandria, still lies in the Altoona hospital suffering from serious injuries as a result of the accident. Mrs. Kenega is slowly improving and, it is hoped, will recover. The automobile that figured in the accident contained five persons – J. L. Reed, of Huntingdon, the driver; Mrs. and Mrs. W. E. Kenega and Mrs. and Mrs. G. E. [sic R.] Hutchison, all of Alexandria. The machine was owned by Mr. Kenega. The party had been out for an evening spin and everything went well until 9:30 o'clock, when the machine struck the sharp curve about two miles north of Claysburg and, after skidding, turned turtle, the accident being caused by some unknown reason. Mr. and Mrs. Hutchison were both seriously hurt, but it was not known at first how really serious Mrs. Hutchison's injuries were. Mrs. Kenega also was badly hurt, but Mr. Kenega and Mr. Reed escaped. It was several hours before the injured persons could be brought to the Altoona hospital. At first it was hoped to be able to save Mrs. Hutchison's life but in the course of time basilar meningitis set in as a result of the fractured skull and this disease killed her. Mrs. Mary Ellen Hutchison was the wife of George R. Hutchison, a meat dealer of Alexandria. She was the daughter of Joseph and Julia Piper and was born at Alexandria on September 10, 1864, and had lived in that town all her life with the exception of four years spent in Nebraska. She was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and was held in high esteem. Her husband and the following three children survive: Fred, a student in Columbia University; Julian and Mary, both at home. Four brothers – Philip, of Altoona; Emery, of Tyrone, George and Edward, of Alexandria – together with one sister, Miss Anna Piper, and the deceased's mother, Mrs. Julia Piper, both of Alexandria, also survive. The remains will be taken to the late home on the 10:45 train this morning and funeral services will be held in the home on Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment will be made in the Presbyterian Cemetery. This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/pafiles/ File size: 3.2 Kb
