Joseph George Lesher was born August 9, 1855, in Northumberland county near Northumberland, Pa., a son. of Daniel and Sarah (Van Kirk) Lesher. At the time of death, he was in his 85th year. Early in life he moved with his parents to Monroe township, Snyder county, where he grew to young manhood on a farm. It was during these formative years on his parents' farm that he developed those traits of practical common sense, integrity and a homely philosophy that marked his character throughout his life. He was appointed a mail clerk on the New York and Pittsburgh run of the Pennsylvania Railroad under the first Cleveland administration. He was united in marriage with Mary Ellen App of Selinsgrove on January 10, 1883. Until her death April 4, 1929, Mrs. Lesher was a constant help-meet, support and companion, a loving wife and mother to the two sons born to the union; Chalender H. Lesher, of Huntingdon and Lea R. Lesher of Sanford, Florida. Mr. Lesher took over the Selinsgrove Times in 1886 and sold it in 1910. During his residence there, he was one of the Democratic leaders of the county and served as a county commissioner from 1906 to 1909. He bought the Huntingdon Monitor, Democratic newspaper of Huntingdon county, early in 1920 and moved here with his family March 1 of that year. President Woodrow Wilson appointed him postmaster March 1, 1915, and he filled that position in a capable and thorough manner for six years. Mr. Lesher was Democratic county chairman of Huntingdon county and was also a delegate to several Democratic national conventions. He had been a member of the National Editorial Association and attended several conventions of the N. E. A. Mr. Lesher was a member of St. James Lutheran Church. Surviving are his two sons, Chalender H. and Lea R.; also three grandchildren: Chalender L. Lesher, of Huntingdon and Mary Ellen and Hugh Lesher of Sanford. Florida. Two sisters and one brother; Amelia Lesher, of Lewisburg, Sarah Lesher and Gordon Lesher, both of Sunbury, also survive. The body will arrive Sunday morning from Florida. The funeral will be held Monday afternoon at 2:30 at Brown's. This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/pafiles/ File size: 3.1 Kb
