Locke, 81, of Huntingdon, formerly of Orbisonia, died on Monday, Feb. 25, 2002, at the Jupiter Hospital, Jupiter, Fla. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 6, 2002, at the Orbisonia United Methodist Church, Cromwell and Maple Street, Orbisonia. Rev. Dr. John W. Stamm will conduct the service. Born Feb. 12, 1921, in Orbisonia, he was the son of the late Dr. Howard V. and Mayme (Comerer) Locke. He was preceded in death by his wives, Elinor Huston Locke, the mother of his children and Audrey Greathead, McConnellsburg. Dr. Locke is survived by his children: Howard Van Locke II, Mechanicsburg; Diane Locke Woodward, Huntingdon; Paula Darby, Shippensburg; and Lyn Locke, Davidsonville, Md. There are nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. One sister, Gwen Locke Gibson of Towson, Md., and one brother, Howard V. Locke Jr. of Fayetteville, survive. Dr. Locke was a dentist in the Orbisonia and McConnellsburg areas for over 50 years. He taught at many dental conventions and conducted seminars throughout the country, and his work was highly regarded by his peers. In addition, for many years he served as the school dentist for the Orbisonia and Saltillo school districts. He was a veteran of the United States Army and a captain in the United States Air Force. Dr. Locke was a graduate of Mercersburg Academy, Temple University and Franklin & Marshall. Dr. Locke was a former member of the United Methodist Church in Orbisonia, where he served as a Sunday school teacher and leader; in addition, he served as a member on various church boards. When the Community State Bank of Orbisonia opened on Jan. 10, 1951, Dr. Locke was one of the directors and incorporators of the bank, which he remained active in for many years. Over the years, he was involved in and supported many organizations such as the Orbisonia Lions Club, The Masonic Lodge, The Community State Bank and many professional organizations such as the Huntingdon Dental Association. He was a member of the Orbisonia Deer Camp, and was an avid hunter, gardener, fisherman and golfer. Additionally, he enjoyed traveling. An admirer of Winston Churchill, Dr. Locke lived life to the fullest. He was passionate about everything. Winston's words encapsulate his life: "I have nothing to offer but love, blood, toil, tears and sweat."
