L. Viola MOUNTAIN, 97, a resident of the Homewood Retirement Center,
Martinsburg, formerly of Saxton, died at 12:45 a.m. Thursday, March 1,
2001, at the home, following an extended illness. Born July 29, 1903, in
Milton, she was a daughter of the late George S. and Ellen E. (Smith)
Weidenhamer. She was united in marriage to Paul G. Mountain Oct. 13,
1930, in Harrisburg. He preceded her in death Oct. 20, 1990. Two sons,
G. Richard Mountain of Hollidaysburg and John P. Mountain of Akron,
Ohio, survive, along with four grandchildren, two step- grandchildren
and five great-grandchildren. The last surviving member of her immediate
family, Mrs. Mountain was preceded in death by five brothers: Ellis,
William, Edward, John and George. She was a life member of the Saxton
United Methodist Church. She also belonged to the Saxton Chapter No.
161, Order of the Eastern Star. A graduate of the George I. Geisinger
Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, she was employed as a nurse at
Mercy Hospital in Altoona before her marriage. She also belonged to the
school's alumni association. Funeral services will be held Saturday,
March 3, at 11 a.m., at the D. Ronald Long Funeral Chapel, Saxton, with
Pastor Todd Templeton officiating. Interment will be made in the
Grandview Cemetery, Saxton, R.D. 

James B. ALLISON, 65, of Saxton, died at 6 a.m. Thursday, March 1, 2001,
at his residence. Born May 20, 1935, in Saxton, he was the son of the
late John and Margerite (Snowberger) Allison. He married Deanna Weaver,
who preceded him in death in August 1996. One daughter And two sons
survive: Pam McDonald, Saxton; John Allison, Altoona; and Tom Allison,
Saxton. There are nine grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters:
Dorothy Ramsey, Syracuse, N.Y. and Florida; Margret Beck, Ft. Worth,
Texas; and Kathy Pawuk, Saxton. An infant sister preceded him in death.
Mr. Allison was a member of the Stonerstown Church of the Brethren in
Saxton, where he served as deacon and treasurer for several years. A
graduate of Saxton-Liberty High School, he worked as a vending machine
mechanic at Saxton Bottling Co. During the Korean War, he served as a
private in the U.S. Army. He enjoyed gardening and television repair.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 4 at the
Stonerstown Church of the Brethren, with Pastor Barbara Hammond
officiating. Interment will be made in the Grandview Cemetery, Saxton. 

Francis G. "Pete" DAVIS, 82, of 13 E. Milford St., Mount Union, died
Friday, March 2, 2001, at 9:05 a.m., at his home. He had been in failing
health. Born Aug. 9, 1918, in Mount Union, he was a son of the late
William and Annie J. (Thomas) Davis. He married Dorothy Wagner Dec. 14,
1945, in the First United Methodist Church in Mount Union, with the Rev.
Edgar Henry officiating the ceremony. Mrs. Davis survives at home, along
with several nieces and nephews. A half-brother, Melvin Thomas, preceded
him in death. Mr. Davis was a member of the First United Methodist
Church of Mount Union, where he was involved with church activities his
entire life. He was a member of the Herman Smith Sunday School class and
was secretary and treasurer of the board of trustees of the building
fund. A 1936 graduate of Mount Union High School, he served in the U.S.
Navy during World War II in the South Pacific. He was employed by the
Hometaste Bakery in Mount Union, the North American Refractories in
Mount Union and retired from B.W. Reeder Hardware in Mount Union in
1972. He was a member of the Allenport Lions Club, where he was a
recipient of the organization's highest award, the Lions International
Foundation Award, known as the Melvin Jones Award. He was the first
local member to receive this honor. Mr. Davis developed the Braille
Trail at the Beacon Lodge Camp for the Blind in Newton Hamilton and
served on many work details at the lodge. He also served on the board of
the Mount Union Chapter of the American Red Cross; was a member of the
Mount Union Area Historical Society; was recognized as Mount Union's
Citizen of the Year in 1986 by the Mount Union Kiwanis, and was active
in the organization and development of the Bricktown Senior Citizens
Center in Mount Union. Mr. Davis served on the Community Development
organization and was active in the formation of the annual Block Parties
held in Mount Union for many years. He was active in both the Cub Scouts
and Boy Scouts and served as a cubmaster and scoutmaster for many years.
He was known locally for his love of and his talents in woodworking and
cake decorating. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, March
5, at the Robert D. Heath Funeral Home, Mount Union, with the Rev. Dr.
Kenneth Grundon officiating. Interment will be made in the Haven Rest
Memorial Park, Shirleysburg, R.D. 1. 

Agnes Cordelia (Howell) MONTGOMERY, 96, of 1415 Scott St., Huntingdon,
died Friday, March 2, 2001, at 4:45 p.m., at her daughter's home at 208
W. Main St., Hummelstown, where she had resided for the past two and
one-half years. She died following a brief illness. Born Nov. 3, 1904,
in Cardiff, Wales, she was a daughter of the late John Temple and
Elizabeth (Clark) Howell. She married the Rev. Dr. Frank W. Montgomery,
June 16, 1930 in Bedford, Maine, with the Rev. Osbert W. Warmingham
officiating. He preceded her in death Dec. 25, 1993. Surviving are two
daughters: Mrs. Jane (Montgomery) Donaldson, Havana, Fla., and the Rev.
Joanne (Montgomery) Link, Hummelstown. There are five grandchildren and
six great-grandchildren. Two brothers and one sister preceded her in
death: John Temple Howell, Katherine Javens and Perce Howell. Mrs.
Montgomery was a member of the First United Methodist Church,
Huntingdon. Active in her church, Mrs. Montgomery served with her
husband in his numerous United Methodist Church appointments. She was a
member of the United Methodist Women and the Arnerican Association of
University Women (AAUW) Huntingdon Chapter. She was also a former member
of the Standing Stone Garden Club. Mrs. Montgomery was primarily a
homemaker but served as assistant to the dean of women at the
Pennsylvania State University in the late 1950s. She attended the public
schools of West Pittsburgh and graduated from Boston University with a
degree in Christian education in 1930. She had lived at her Huntingdon
residence since 1971. She enjoyed writing and published numerous
articles and poetry. She also enjoyed painting. A funeral service will
be held at the First United Methodist Church, Fifth and Mifflin streets,
Huntingdon, Monday, March 5, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Doyle H. Klinger
Jr. officiating, assisted by the Rev. William M. Brown. Interment will
be made in the Riverview Cemetery, Huntingdon. 

Jeanne T. BRODE, 67, of Saxton, R.D., died at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, March
3, 2001, at her residence. Born Nov. 15, 1933, in Langdondale, she was
the daughter of the late Fred and Fern (Dolt) Kline. She married Omar C.
Brode Oct. 26, 1952. Mr. Brode preceded her in death Nov. 16, 1993.
Surviving are two daughters and two sons: Shari Mitchell, Virginia
Beach, Va.; Debby Rightenour, Saxton; Kerry "Bud" Brode, Saxton; And
Vaughn "Buck" Brode, Saxton. There are seven grandchildren. Also
surviving are three sisters and two brothers: Kathy Harding, Saxton;
Zola Mary Wallace, Langdondale; Luci Urias, San Francisco, Calif.;
William Kline, Langdondale; Thomas Kline, Langdondale; and Bud Kline,
Saxton. Mrs. Brode was a member of the Oasis of Love Church in Saxton.
During her life, she enjoyed reading, artwork, writing poetry and
spending time with her grandchildren. She was primarily a homemaker.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 6, at the Oasis
of Love Church in the Valley, Saxton, with Pastor Kathy Speck
officiating. Interment will be made in the Rhoat Cemetery, Saxton. R.D. 

Richard J. "Rich" HILEMAN, 55, of 316 30th St., Huntingdon, formerly of
Mount Union, died at 11:30 p.m. Saturday, March 3, 2001, at Centre
Community Hospital, State College, following a brief il ness. Born Nov.
3, 1945, in Mount Union, he was a son of the late Robert and Mildred
(Robinson) Hileman. He was united in marriage to Betty Dobbs March 12,
1965, at Craig Field Chapel in Selma, Ala. Mrs. Hileman survives, along
with a son, Richard Junior Hileman of Nashville, Tenn. and two
grandchildren. Five siblings survive: Catherine Wilson, Aliquippa; Betty
Shultz, Huntingdon; Robert Hileman, Port Charlotte, Fla.; Ronald
Hileman, Mount Union; and Mary J. Diak, Kistler. Two brothers, Thomas
Hileman and John Hileman, preceded him in death. A 1963 graduate of
Captain Jack High School, he attended George C. Wallace Community
College and its technical school. He served two tours of duty in the
U.S. Air Force in Vietnam. Mr. Hileman had been employed as an engineer
by Advanced Glass- fiber Yarn, formerly Owens Corning Fiberglas,
Huntingdon, for 25 years. He attended the Twelfth Street United
Methodist Church in Huntingdon. Local funeral arrangements are under the
direction of the Robert D. Heath Funeral Home, Mount Union. All viewing
and service arrangements are conducted by the Lawrence Brown Funeral
Home in Selma, Ala. Interment will be made in the Pineview Memory
Gardens, Selma, Ala.

Billie Jo ELLIOTT, 31, of Claradon Avenue, Hagerstown, Md., died
Saturday, March 3, 2001, at her home. Born March 27, 1969, in Germany,
she was a daughter of William D. Elliott of Battle Creek, Mich., and the
late Shirley J. (Wible) Contrillo. She is survived by two sons, Anthony
Scott Elliott and Austin Gregory Elliott, both at home, along with her
maternal grandparents, Buford and Erma Wible of Hustontown, R.D. Also
surviving are five siblings: Mary Hall of Newburg, Richard Elliott of
Saltillo, Mark Elliott of Texas, Kimberly Elliott and Kelly Elliott,
both of Battle Creek, Mich. Ms. Elliott attended the Dublin Mills
Community Church, Hustontown, R.D. She had been employed by Avalon Manor
Nursing Home in Hagerstown, MD. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m.
Friday, March 9, at the Martin R. Brown Funeral Home, Orbisonia, with
the Rev. David Sproull officiating. 

Elsie E. KNEPP, 83, of Valley View Haven, Belleville, died at 4:30 p.m.
Sunday, March 4, 2001, at Valley View Haven. Born June 2, 1917, in
Belleville, she was a daughter of the late Charles M. and Anna E.
(Mitchell) Fultz. She was united in marriage to W. Jerry Knepp Sept. 28,
1935. He preceded her in death Jan. 3, 1984. Surviving are three
children: Mrs. Ronald (Geraldine) Carson, Belleville; Thomas R. Knepp,
Lewistown; and Mrs. John (Jane) McKinley, State College. There are 14
grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. One son, W. James Knepp,
died in 1973. The following sisters survive: Ivie Manbeck, Tyrone;
Gertrude Peters, Mifflintown; June Fultz, Lewistown; Josephine Newman,
Lewistown; Isabelle Lykens, Tyrone; and Mrs. Daniel. (Joyce) Hostetler,
Milroy. Two brothers, Lloyd Fultz and Charles Fultz, and a sister,
Winifred Allison, preceded her in death. Mrs. Knepp was a homemaker. She
was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Belleville and The
Knotters. She enjoyed crafts, quilting, crossword puzzles and being with
people. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 8, at
the St. John's Lutheran Church in Belleville, with the Rev. Lois Martin
and the Rev. Ralph Wilson officiating. Interment will be made in St.
John's Lutheran Cemetery. 

Elmira F. "Dutch" RINARD, 87, of Saxton, died at 12:36 p.m. Sunday,
March 4, 2001, at her residence. Born Feb. 9, 1914, in Saxton, she was
the daughter of the late Howard and Ella (Ritchey) Wyles. She married
Virgil Doyle "Buck" Rinard, who preceded her in death Dec. 23, 1972.
Surviving are a daughter, Dorothy Jean Russell of Hopewell, five
grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-
grandchildren. One sister and three brothers survive: Lillian Kelly,
John Wyles and Kenneth Wyles, all of Saxton. One sister, Esther Harvey,
and a brother, James Wyles, preceded her in death. Mrs. Rinard worked as
a cementer at Cove Shoe Company in Martinsburg for 17 years. Prior to
that, she worked as Savadow's in Saxton at the Bedford Springs Hotel.
She was of the Protestant faith. During her life she enjoyed quilting
and gardening. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, March
8, at the Curtis A. Heath Funeral Home, Broad Top, with Pastor Donald
Simmons officiating. Interment will be made in the Brumbaugh Cemetery. 

Milford Ray SUMMERS, 82, a resident of the Hollidaysburg Veterans Home,
formerly of Waterfall, R.D. 3, died at 8:10 p.m. Sunday, March 4, 2001,
at the Veterans Home, where he had resided for the past three years.
Born June 5, 1918, in Kearney, Bedford County, he was the son of the
late George Wesley and Rosa (Purcell) Summers. He married Dortha V
Kerlin Jan. 6, 1942, at the Carlisle Barracks Chapel, Carlisle. Mrs.
Summers preceded him in death Jan. 23, 1998. One son, George E. Summers
of Mill Creek survives, along with three granddaughters and five great-
grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother and three sisters: Florence
Danfelt of Mapleton, George J. Summers of Waterfall, Frances Kerlin of
McConnellsburg and Barbara E. Park of Huntingdon. Five brothers and one
sister are deceased: Theodore Summers, Nicholas Summers, Harold Summers,
Ross Summers, Mabel Summers and Jack Summers. Mr. Summers attended the
New Grenada Church of God, Waterfall, R.D., He was a self-employed
logger for many years in and retired 1996 from JLG Industries in
McConnellsburg, where he had worked as a janitor. A veteran of World War
II; he served in the U.S. Army from 1941 until 1945, in the European
Theatre of War. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday,
March 7, at the M.R. Brown Funeral Home, Hustontown, with Pastor Kenneth
Cornelius officiating. Interment will be made in the Hustontown
Cemetery, Hustontown. 

Martha E. HINISH, 92, a resident of the Morrisons Cove Home,
Martinsburg, formerly of Saxton, R.D., died Saturday, March 3, 2001, at
8:25 p.m., at Nason Hospital, Roaring Spring. Her death was unexpected.
Born March 16, 1908, in Saxton, R.D., she was a daughter of the late
Joseph Calvin and Maude (Ritchey) Wyles. She married Raymond A. Hinish
April 3, 1926, in Cumberland, Md. He preceded her in death Feb.10,1975.
Surviving are a son, Joseph L. Hinish of Martinsburg, three
granddaughters and three great-grandchildren. One son, Raymond A. Hinish
Jr. preceded her in death. One brother,and one sister survive: Joseph
Wyles of Saxton, R.D., and Mary Stapleton of the Morrisons Cove Home,
Martinsburg. Three sisters, Betty Reighard, Catherine Morrison Reighard
and Ruth Manspeaker, and an infant brother are deceased. Mrs. Hinish was
a life member of the Raven Run Church of the Brethren, where she was
active in the widows' group and the quilters. She was active in farming
and was a homemaker. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed crocheting.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 8, at 11 a.m., at the
Raven Run Church of the Brethren, with Pastor Dan Hammil officiating.
Interment will be made in St. Luke's Cemetery; Saxton, R.D. 

Doris M. ALEXANDER, 83, of 403 N. Second St., McConnellsburg, died March
2, 2001, at the Fulton County Medical Center. Born April 29, 1917, in
Houtzdale, she was a daughter of the late Howard A. and Edna M. (Lloyd)
McKenzie. She was united in marriage to J. Frank Alexander, who preceded
her in death Nov. 22, 1990. One son, William "Bill" Alexander of
Huntingdon survives, along with two grandchildren. A sister, Jane
Sunderlin, preceded her in death. Mrs. Alexander was a member of St.
Paul's United Church of Christ, McConnellsburg. She also belonged to the
Order of the Eastern Star,Women's' Auxiliary of St. Paul's United Church
of Christ and the Fulton County Society of Farm Women. She was primarily
a homemaker. Funeral services were held Monday, March 5, at St. Paul's
United Church of Christ in McConnellsburg. Interment was made in the
Union Cemetery. 

Novella D. CYPHER, 40, of Rockhill Furnace, died at 4:45 a.m. Tuesday,
March 6, 2001, at her home. Born Aug. 9, 1960, in Huntingdon, she was a
daughter of Henry and Deanna (Rogers) Clymans, who survive at Mount
Union, R.D. She was married to Mark C. Cypher June 9, 1990, in Mill
Creek. Mr. Cypher survives at home, along with four children: Nathaniel
L. Myers, Joshua E. Myers, Zachary D. Myers and Nicholous D. Cypher, aLl
at home. Two siblings, Tracy J. Helman of Chambersburg and Henry L.
Clymans III of Shirleysburg, survive. Mrs. Cypher was a homemaker. A
memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 10, at the Sugar
Run Church of the Brethren, Mount Union, R.D., with the Rev. Jim
Hullihen officiating. Interment will be made in the IOOF Memorial
Cemetery, Rockhill Furnace. 

Robert D. DELANEY, 61, of 4 Old Farm Rd., Hummelstown, died .Tuesday,
March 6, 2001, at his residence. Born March 28, 1939, in Wayne Township,
he was the son of the late Chauncey and Harriett (Gross) Delaney. He is
survived by his wife of 37 years, Kay M. (Seibert) Delaney, one son and
one daughter: Shawn R. Delaney of Hummelstown and Mrs. Chad R. (Maureen
K.) Ott of Wayne. Three sisters survive: Mrs. Dean R. (Billie R. "Diz")
Kerlin, Mrs. James E. (Jean D.) McKnight, both of Hummelstown; and
Shirley Puchalla, Mount Union. Mr. Delaney retired from the wrapping
department of he Hershey Chocolate Corporation. A 1957 graduate of the
former Captain Jack High School in Mount Union, he served in ihe U.S.
Army. A member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, Hummelstown, he
enjoyed gardening and was an avid fan of the Hershey Bears and the
Philadelphia Flyers ice hockey teams. Funeral services will be held
Friday, March 9, at 10 a.m., in the Trinity United Methodist Church, 210
W. Main St., Hummelstown, with the Rev. Joanne (Montgomery) Link, the
Rev. Dr. Michael L. Stine and the Rev. Charles L. Klinger officiating.
Interment will be made in the Hummelstown Cemetery. 

Mabel E. GROVE, 81, of Grantville, died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at
Hershey Medical Center. She was born May 17, 1919. Surviving are her
husband, Donald E. Grove, three daughters and six sons: Donna Keister,
Harrisburg; Shirley Kelly, Saxton; Mary Esther Maloney, Chambersburg;
Larry Grove, Lebanon; Ronald Grove, Grantville; William Rupert,
Indianapolis, Ind.; Raymond Rupert, Willow Hill; Cloyd Rupert,
Huntingdon; and Anthony Lee Rupert, Lewistown. One brother, Harold
Bowser of Alexandria, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren
survive. Mrs. Grove was a member of the Epworth United Methodist Church
in Harrisburg. She retired from Model City Cleaners in Penbrook. Funeral
services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, March 9, in the Kimmel Funeral
Home, Inc., Harrisburg. Interment will be made in the Blue Ridge
Memorial Gardens. 

Elvin H. SNARE Sr., 96, a resident of Morrisons Cove Retirement Home,
Martinsburg, formerly of Saxton, died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at 10:10
a.m., at the Bon Secours Holy Family Hospital, Altoona. His death was
unexpected. Born Jan. 19, 1905, in Williamsburg, R.D., he was a son of
the late Isaac and Minnie (Gates) Snare. He married Florence R.
Snowberger June 14, 1924. She preceded him in death June 15, 1992. Three
children survive: Mrs. E. Paul (Eleanor) Weaver, Everett, R.D., Elvin H.
Snare Jr., Riddlesburg; and Ellis J. Snare, Carlisle. There are six
grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. The last surviving member
of his immediate family, he was preceded in death by a sister and five
brothers: Mary Edwards, Ralph Snare, Carl Snare, Harry Snare, John Snare
and Clyde Snare. Mr. Snare was a member of the Stonerstown Church of the
Brethren. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electric
Workers and retired in 1986 from the Saxton plant of Penelec, after 33
years of service. Funeral services will be held at the convenience of
the family. There will be no public viewing or visitation. Interment
will be made in the Shellytown Cemetery, Williamsburg, R.D. 

C. Galen DETWILER, 86, of Cherry Street Extension, Martinsburg, formerly
of Everett, died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at the Altoona Hospital. Born
Jan. 13, 1915, in New Enterprise, he was a son of the late Jerry
Straight and Delilah (Replogle) Detwiler. He married Grace Arvilia
Pressel Aug. 6, 1937, at the New Enterprise Church of the Brethren. She
survives in Martinsburg, along with four daughters: Mrs. John "Rusty"
(Peggy D.) Gates, Naples, Fla. and Spruce Creek; Mrs. William H.
(Laverne D.) Penn, Hollidaysburg; Mrs. Agustin (Lorraine D.)
Araquistain, Longwood, Fla.; and Mrs. Ted E. (Louise D.) Amick, Berwyn.
There are nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, four
step-grandchildren, five step- great-grandchildren and one step-
great-great-granddaughter One brother and two sisters survive: Dale W.
Detwiler of Huntingdon, Marguerite Detwiler of Polk and Cora Jane Miller
of Akron, Ohio. Several nieces and nephews survive. A sister-in-law
survives in Huntingdon. He was preceded in death by two brothers and two
sisters: Paul I. Detwiler Sr., Emmert I. Detwiler, Cleo Hershberger and
Prudence Funy. Mr. Detwiler was a member of the Everett Church of the
Brethren, where he taught Sunday School for 40 years, was a member of
the choir, served on various committees and he and his wife served as
deacons and youth advisers. A 1933 graduate of Replogle High School in
New Enterprise, he graduated from Thompson Business School in York in
1935. In 1936, he joined New Enterprise Stone and Lime Company as
superintendent of the Ashcom Plant and became a co-owner in 1941. In
1949, he and his brothers incorporated the company their father founded
in 1924. Now known as New Enterprise Stone and Lime Company, Inc., he
served as corporation secretary and director of administration until his
retirement in 1980. Since his retirement, he served as consultant to the
company. He was well-known for his philanthrooic ventures throughout the
region, especially for the construction and renovation of the Bedford
County Memorial Hospital, Everett Church of the Brethren and the
Morrisons Cove Home in Martinsburg. Mr. Detwiler was a charter member of
the board of directors for the Bedford County Memorial Hospital, now
UPMC Bedford Memorial Hospital, where he also served as president. He
was instrumental in the founding and construction of the facility and
its ongoing operations and improve- ments. For 42 years, he served on
the board of directors of the First National Bank of Everett, where he
also served as president of the board. He was a member of the board of
the Morrisons Cove Home, where he also acted as secretary and treasurer.
At retirement, he was named a director emeritus. A 50-year member of the
Everett Lions Club with perfect attendance, he was named Lions Club
Citizen of the Year. He was responsible for publishing the Lions
newsletter and was also a member of the Roaring Spring Lions Club. A
charter member of the Everett Railroad, Mr. Detwiler served on the board
and was president in 1982. He was the last president of the Everett
Railroad. He served on the Everett Area School Board for 21 years,
serving a term as president of the board. Funeral services will be held
Saturday, March 10, at 11 a.m., in the Ev erett Church of the Brethren,
with the Rev. Lowell Witkovsky and the Rev. Marlys Hershberger
officiating. Interment will be made in the Everett Cemetery. 

Martha Louise KOSACK, 74, of 8 Maple St., Kistler, Mount Union, died at
10:14 p.m. Tuesday, March 7, 2001, at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital,
Huntingdon. She had been in failing health. Born Feb. 22, 1927, in
Bradford, she was a daughter of the late James Arthur Barger and Mary
(Banks) Barger Fleming of Kistler, Mount Union. He married John "Cutty"
Kosack Nov. 18, 1950. He preceded her in death Feb. 8, 1977. Surviving,
along with her mother, are a son, John R. Kosack of Kistler and one
grandson. An infant son, Marc John Kosack, preceded her in death. Two
sisters, Irene Pandolfino of St. Augustine, Fla., and Evelyn Henry of
Kistler, survive. A brother, Robert Barger, is deceased. Mrs. Kosack
attended the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Mount Union.
She had been employed by L. Greif Brothers Manufacturing in Mount Union
and later by US Sports of Huntingdon until her retirement. Funeral
services will be private, with the Rev. Steve Motter officiating.
Interment will be made in the Mount Union Cemetery. 

Leon L. MADDEN, 74, of Rockhill Furnace, died at 12:29 p.m. Tuesday,
March 6, 2001, at Hanover Hospital, Hanover. Born Sept. 7, 1926, in
Rockhill Furnace, he was a son of the late Warren J. and Elizabeth A.
(Myers) Madden. He was married to Marjorie Leighton Aug. 13, 1945. Mrs.
Madden preceded him in death Jan. 3, 1997. Surviving are two daughters:
Linda E. Plasterer of New Oxford and Cathy A. Bryant of Fort Wayne, Ind.
There are seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. One
brother, Ross Madden of Mount Union survives. One brother and one sister
are deceased. Mr. Madden attended the Shirleysburg United Methodist
Church, Shirleysburg. He was a member of the Madden-Wennick Post No.
518, American Legion, Rockhill Furnace. He retired in 1995 from Mount
Union Planing Mill after 34 years of service. During World War II, he
served in the U.S. Army. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m.
Saturday, March 10, at the Shirleysburg United Methodist Church,
Shirleysburg, with the Rev. Richard Morris and the Rev. Vivian Carbaugh
officiating. Interment will be made in the IOOF Memorial Cemetery,
Rockhill Furnace. 

Don HENNESSEY, 72, of 609 Norris St., Saxton, died Wednesday, March 7,
2001, at 5 p.m., at his home. He had been in failing health for the past
two years. Born March 15, 1928, in Broad Top City, he was the son of the
Porter and Faye (Black) Hennessey. He married Dorothy Jane Blankley Feb.
15, 1947, in Hagerstown, Md. Mrs. Hennessey survives at home, along with
tfie following children: Larry Hennessey, Indiana; Mrs. Jim (Judy)
Rhodes, Saxton, R.D.; Jeff Hennessey, Indiana; and Todd Hennessey,
Duncansville. There are eight grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren. Also surviving are these siblings: Lee Hennessey,
Saxton, R.D.; Jack Hennessey, Mechanicsburg; Vera Cupp, Camp Hill;
Dorothea Black, Broad Top City; Joyce Snyder, James Creek; Delora Ross,
Saxton and Nelda Shepherd, Cincinnati, Ohio. A brother, Clement, and a
twin brother, Von, preceded him in death. Mr. Hennessey was a member of
the Church of God Tabernacle, Saxton. He was a member of the Saxton VFW
and the Saxton Sportsmen's Club. He worked as a coal miner and as a
carpenter for Baker and Donaldson. He retired in 1990, after 25 years of
service as a bridge crew carpenter for New Enterprise Stone and Lime
Company. He was a member of the company's Quarter Century Club. Mr.
Hennessey was an avid fisherman and hunter, enjoyed music, gardening,
planting flowers and playing with his grandchildren. Funeral services
will be held Saturday, March 10, at 2 p.m., at the D. Ronald Long
Funeral Chapel, Saxton, with Pastor Lenny J. Hoover officiating.
Interment will be made in the IOOF Cemetery, Broad Top City. 

Paul G. ISETT, 89, of R.D. 1, Box 79, James Creek, died Thursday, March
8, 2001, at 2:20 a.m., at Westminster Woods, Huntingdon, following a
lengthy illness. Born July 24, 1911, in Hesston, R.D., he was a son of
the late Guy and Margaret (Rice) Isett. He married Harriet W. Walls
April 8, 1944, at the Marklesburg United Methodist Church, with the Rev.
Paul Myers officiating. Mrs. Isett survives at home, along with the
following siblings: Pearl Garner, Gladys Fouse and June Gosnell, all of
James Creek, and Ralph Isett of Saxton. Three sisters and seven brothers
preceded him in death. Mr. Isett was of the Protestant faith. He worked
in the brickyard in Mount Union and for the H&BT Railroad. He was also a
self- employed plumber for 30 years, retiring in 1976. He enjoyed
hunting and woodcrafts. Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 11,
at 2 p.m., at the D. Ronald Long Funeral Chapel, Saxton, with Pastor
James S. Blair officiating. Interment will be made in the Russellville
Methodist Cemetery. 

Burdell "Dusty" Palmer RHODES, 88, a resident of The Oaks at Westminster
Woods, Huntingdon, died Wednesday, March 7, 2001, at 12:10 p.m at his
residence. He had been in failing health since moving to The Oaks in
September 1997. Born July 24, 1912, in North Braddock, he was a son of
the late William and Grace Gordon (Palmer) Rhodes. He married Edwina
Marie Ruby on Thanksgiving Day 1932, at the Methodist Church in
Pitcairn. Mrs. Rhodes survives at The Oaks. One sister, Mrs. David
(Margaret Jane) Cronin of Pitcairn survives, along with several nieces
and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ira Hillis Rhodes.
Mr. Rhodes retired after working for many years as an elevator and crane
technician for Westinghouse Electric Corporation's East Pittsburgh
plant. He also sold Fuller Brush products part time for a number of
years. A 1931 graduate of Pitcairn High School, he attended the
University of Pittsburgh. From 1943 until 1945, he served in the U.S.
Army field artillery in the European Theatre of Operations in France and
Germany and in the Battle of the Bulge. Mr. Rhodes was a member of the
Hesston Community Chapel. He had been a resident of Hesston since
theearly 1970's followinging his retirement and prior to moving to The
Homestead in April 1997. For years, in the 1950s and 1960s, his family
vacationed at the old Raystown Lake. When their cabin was flooded to
make room for the new lake, they re-established their new home in
Hesston. In addition to spending his summers at Raystown Lake, he
enjoyed gardening and woodworking. He and his wife traveled extensively
throughout France, Belgium, Germany and Holland. Family and friends are
invited to funeral services to be held at the Commons Room of the
Homestead at Westminster Woods, 360 Westminster Dr., Huntingdon, at 3
p.m. today. The Rev. James L. Blair will officiate. Interment will be
made in the Penn Lincoln Memorial Park, 14679 Route 30, North
Huntingdon, Monday,. March 12. 

Florence B. McKIM, 89, of McClure, R.R. 2, died at 10 a.m. Thursday,
March 8, 2001, at Evangelicil Community Hospital. Born Sept. 4, 1911, in
Duncannon, she was a daughter of the late Clyde and Florence (Strunk)
Willi. She married her companion of 30 years, Samuel R. McKim, Oct. 15,
1996. Mr. McKim survives, along with a sister-in-law and two nieces. An
infant sister and a brother, Raymond L. Willi, preceded her in death.
Mrs. McKim was a member of the Beavertown United Methodist Church. She
worked for the former Standard Shirt Factory as a seamstress. She
enjoyed playing guitar, fishing and hunting. Funeral services will be
held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, at the Aurand Funeral Home, 316 W.
Market St., Beavertown, with the Rev. John D. Yost officiating.
Interment will be made in the Union Cemetery, Mifflintown. 

Chester A. BENSON, 91, formerly of Belleville, died at 2:30 p.m.
Thursday, March 8, 2001, at the Beverly Healthcare-William, Penn,
Lewiston. Born Oct. 10, 1909, in Jackson Township, Huntingdon county, he
was a son of the late Daniel M. and Susan (Sills) Benson. His wife, the
former Minnie E. Koser, preceded him in death Nov. 15, 1983. Surviving
are two children, Kenneth R. Benson of Rockville, Md., and Mrs. Sherwood
(Barbara) Frankhouser, Belleville, along with seven grandchildren and
ten great-grandchildren. A daughter, Doris Wilkins, preceded him in
death Nov. 15, 1997. One brother, Oliver M. Benson, and a sister, Esther
M. Aurand, are also deceased. Mr. Benson was a crane operator at
Standard Steel for 25 years, retiring in January 1972. He was a member
of the West Kishacoquillas Presbyterian Church, Belleville. Funeral
services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 12, at the, Donald E.
Baggus Funeral Home, 3813 W. Main St., Belleville, with the Rev.
SamuelG.. Strohm officiating. Interment will be made in the St. John's
Lutheran Cemetery, Belleville. 

Edward B. MASON, 40, of 107 Prendergast Extension, Huntingdon, died at
5:30 a.m. Friday, March 9, 2001, at his home. He was born in Philipsburg
Aug. 12, 1960, the son of Philip W. Mason and Jeanine G. (Albert) Mason
Kyper. His father, of Huntingdon, R.R. 1, survives and his mother
preceded him in death Dec. 17, 2000. He was united in marriage to
Michele R. Workinger Jan. 26, 1990, with District Justice James Kyper
officiating. His wife survives at their home. Three daughters survive:
E. Hayley Mason of Huntingdon and Ashley J. Mason and Lindsey A. Mason,
both at home. A sister, Susan M. (Mason) Rhone of Huntingdon, and a
brother, Matthew P. Mason of Hartsiog Valley, Huntingdon, R.R. 1, also
survive. Mr. Mason was a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church,
Huntingdon. He was a resident of Huntingdon since age four, and he was
educated in the public schools of Huntingdon. He was a graduate of
Huntingdon Area High School, Class of 1978, and was on the squad of the
undefeated and untied 1977 HAHS football team. He had been at his
current residence since 1993. Mr. Mason was employed from 1978 to 1982
as a licensed life insurance agent for American General Baltimore-Life
and 1982 to 1985 as produce inspector and retail accounting manager for
Reeves- Parvin. In 1985 he begaii a career with the Department of
Corrections at SCI Huntingdon. In 1991 he was promoted to business
manager at SCI Cresson and then transferred to SCI Smithfield in 1993 as
business manager where he was currently employed. Mr. Mason enjoyed
hunting and sports, especially football. He was an avid Chicago Bears
football fan and a NASCAR enthusiast. He took pride in being a resident
of Huntingdon and enjoyed spending time with family members and friends.
A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 12, at Most Holy
Trinity Catholic Church, Huntingdon. The Rev. Fr. David J. Arsenault and
the Rev. Msgr. David A. Lockard will officiate. Interment will be made
in Donation Cemetery, Oneida Township. 

Nancy J. SPECK, 49, of Huntingdon, died Thursday, March 8, 2001, at 4:50
p.m., at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon. Born Oct. 3, 1951, in
Huntingdon, she was a daughter of the late John Wolfe and Edith (Ouerry)
Wolfe of Smithfield. She married Stephen L.Speck June 14, 1969, in
Huntingdori, Mr. Speck survives at home. Three siblings survive: Debra
Norris, Cindy Honstine and John Wolfe Jr., all of Huntingdon. Mrs. Speck
was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Huntingdon. She was a
member of the Women of the Moose Chapter No. 220, Huntingdon. She was
first employed by the Huntingdon County Probation Office then the
Tri-County Drug and Alcohol Abuse Office in Huntingdon. Most recently,
she was the owner and operator of Public Stenographer Services in
Huntingdon Mrs. Speck was a 1969 graduate of Huntingdon Area High
School. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the
family.

Lois Marie McCRACKEN, 88, of 400 Ninth St. Apt. 509, Huntingdon formerly
of Huntingdon, R.D. 2, died Sunday, March 11, 2001, at 8:10 a.m., at The
Oaks at Westminster Woods, Huntingdon. Born Feb. 1, 1913, in Spruce
Creek, she was a daughter of the late Leo and Annie (Krepps) Lowe. She
married Clarence McCracken Feb. 17, 1936, in State College. He preceded
her in death Oct. 2, 1983. Three children survive: Joe McCracken, Doris
Daugherty and Pat Hearn, all of Donation, Huntingdon, R.D. 2. There are
eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and one
great-great-granddaughter. The last surviving member of her immediate
family, she was preceded in death by three sisters and four brothers:
Elizabeth Teeters, Nellie Rambeau, Dorothy Van Lenten, Marion Lowe,
William Lowe, Luther Lowe and Lewis Lowe. Mrs. McCracken was a member of
the Donation United Methodist Church. A member of the Salvation Army in
Huntingdon, she was primarily a homemaker. Funeral services will be held
Tuesday, March 13, at 1 p.m., at the Robert E. Peters Funeral Home,
Huntingdon, with the Rev. Merrill L. Banks officiating. Interment will
be made in the Donation Cemetery, Huntingdon, R.D. 2. 

Kathryn E. "Katie" SEILHAMER, 87, of 510 E. Caroline Ave., Altoona, died
Sunday, March 11, 2001, at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center, Johnstown.
Born Feb. 3, 1914, in. Birmingham, she was a daughter of the late Walter
D. and Lucy May (Stewart) Shamp. She married Harold W. Seilhamer in
1972, in Altoona. Surviving, along with her husband, are two daughters,
a son, and three step-children: Sharlene K. Kearney, Naples, Fla.;
Bonnie L. James, Williamsburg; Zane J. Seilhamer, Altoona; Susan Kaye
Ryan, Harold W. Seilhamer Jr. and Marilyn Jean Stitch, all of Altoona.
There are 11 grandchildren and 11 great- grandchildren. Also surviving
are many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews in the
Huntingdon area. Mrs. Seilhamer retired as a supervisor at Boyer
Brothers Candy after 25 years of service. Prior to that, she worked at
Frozen Farm Products. She was a former member of the Asbury United
Methodist Church. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends
and enjoyed working around her home. She was an avid NASCAR fan. Funeral
services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 14, at the Mauk and
Yates Funeral Home, Inc., Juniata, with the Rev. John P. Klingeman
officiating. Interment will be made in the Blair Memorial Park,
Bellwood. 

Sarah M. SHIVES, 76, formerly of Mapleton and a resident of Huntingdon
Manor for the past two years, died at 5:32 a.m. Saturday, March 10,
2001, at the manor. She had been in failing health. Born Oct. 1, 1924,
in Mapleton, she was a daughter of the late William Clarence and Arvilia
(Hawk) Miles. She married Paul R. Shives July 15, 1961, at Shade Gap,
R.D. He preceded her in death Feb. 8, 1981. Three children survive:
Randy B. Miles and Michael P. Shives, both of Mapleton, and Ginny L.
Everhart, Huntingdon. There are five granddaughters and one grandson, as
well as a number of nieces and nephews. A twin sister, Mary Kyler, and a
sister, Barbara Kelly, preceded her in death. Mrs. Shives was a member
of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Mapleton, where she was a
former Sunday School superintendent. She was also a member of the Maple
Glen Rebekah Lodge No. 392, Mapleton, where she was a former Noble Grand
and deputy. She also served as past president and secretary of the Past
Noble Grands organization. She was a member of the Mapleton Fire
Auxiliary and the Mapleton Sportsmen's Association. A 1942 graduate of
Mount Union High School, she had been employed by J.C. Blair Memorial
Hospital. She also worked as a school van driver for Carl Updegrove in
the Mount Union Area School District and most recently was employed by
the Area Agency on Aging in the Huntingdon County. Funeral services will
be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 13, at the Robert D. Heath Funeral
Home, Mount Union, with the Rev. Ed Seeley officiating. Interment will
be made in the Mapleton IOOF Cemetery. 

Ethel V. "Dolly" YOUTZY, 78, of Pine Glen Road, Lewistown, died at 9:45
a.m. Friday, March 9, 2001, at her home. Born Dec. 10, 1922, in
Blacklog, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Ella (Laird)
Emery. Her husband, Delmer L. Youtzy Sr., whom she married Sept. 11,
1943, died Dec. 3, 1998. She is survived by: children, Mrs. Gary
(Marlene) Stryker and Delmer L. Youtzy Jr, both of Lewistown; sisters,
Geraldine Wentz, Newton Hamilton and Lorma Rutter, Horseheads, NY; five
grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and one
great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by a sister and a
brother, Vivian "Hon" Vargason and Chet Emery; and two half-sisters,
Olive Getz and Edith Long. She was a manager of the Diana Dress Shop,
Lewistown, retiring in 1982. She had also worked as a sewing instructor
for Singer, as a Home Interiors hostess and at Danks Department Store,
Lewistown. She was a member of the Pine Glen Church of the Brethren,
where she taught the Work and Win Sunday School Class, served as
treasurer and sat on various church committees. She was a former
president of the Lewistown Business and Professional Women. She was an
avid flower gardener. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the
Pine Glen Church of the Brethren, with the Rev. Donald E. Peters Jr.
officiating. Interment will be in Pine Glen Cemetery. 

Barry B. BOOHER, 49, of 28 Walnut St., Kistler, Mount Union, died
unexpectedly at 6:20 p.m. Friday, March 9, 2001, at J.C. Blair Memorial
Hospital, Huntingdon. Born Sept. 6, 1951, in Huntingdon, he was a son of
the late Joshua M. and Freda M. (Lancaster) Booher. He was united in
marriage to Susan K Grove July 1, 1972. Mrs. Booher survives at home,
along with two children: Todd A. Booher and Angela K. Beckenbaugh, both
of Mount Union, and three grandchildren. Three brothers also survive:
Charles C. Booher, Clear Ridge; Chester F. Booher, Kistler; and Kenneth
C. Booher, Mount Union. His twin brother, Larry Booher, preceded him in
death. Mr. Booher was a 1970 graduate of Mount Union Area High School.
He was employed by FCI Berg, Mount Union, for the past three years.
Prior to that, he had been employed by Stone Valley Construction. Mr.
Booher was of the Protestant faith. Funeral services will be held at 2
p.m. Tuesday, March 13, at the Robert D. Heath Funeral Home, Mount
Union, with the Rev. Gordon Ross officiating. Interment will be made in
the Mount Union Cemetery. 

Wanda (Moore) MEYASH, 71, of 310 15th St., Huntingdon, died Friday,
March 9, 2001, at 7:35 a.m., at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital,
Huntingdon, following an extended illness. Born June 11, 1929, in
Huntingdon, she was a daughter of the late Hiram J. and Ella Virginia
(Brumbaugh) Moore. She married Joseph P. Meyash Feb. 14, 1953, in the
rectory of the Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Huntingdon, with the
Rev. John Crowley officiating. Mr. Meyash survives at home. One sister,
Mrs. George (Lorraine Moore) Steel of Huntingdon, also survives. Mrs.
Meyash was a member of the Stonerstown Church of the Brethren in Saxton.
She attended the Huntingdon public schools and graduated from Huntingdon
High School with the Class of 1947. In 1950, she graduated from the
Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in Pittsburgh, as a registered
nurse. She had been employed as a registered nurse by J.C. Blair
Memorial Hospital and the Bedford Memorial Hospital from 1950 until
1973. She worked as a registered nurse and office manager for Philip F.
Dunn, M.D., from 1950 until 1973. She owned and operated the Meyash
Laundromat and Car Wash with her husband between 1965 and 1996. >From
1978 until 1995, she served on Huntingdon Borough Council and was
president of the council from 1992 until 1995. She served as chair to
the administrative comniittee from 1978 until 1991 and as Council of
Government representative from 1982 until 1993. In 1999, she was
appointed by borough council to the Huntingdon Planning Commission,
where she served through September 2000. She was past chair of the board
of directors for Citizens Human Rights; past president and member of the
board of directors of the Huntingdon Revitalization and Development,
Inc. from 1978 until 1991. Mrs. Meyash was a member of the League of
Women Voters, University of Pittsburgh/Presbyterian Alumni Association;
Amateur Radio Relay League; Huntingdon County Amateur Radio Club, Inc.;
and Loop Tower Repeater Association, Inc. She had lived at her current
residence for 48 years. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, cooking, HAM
radios, knitting, crocheting, reading and flower gardening. A private
graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family, with
the Rev. Elwood Figurelle officiating. Interment will be made in the
Holy Cross Cemetery, Huntingdon. 

Harold B. SHAW, 90, formerly of Hustontown, R.D., died Saturday, March
10, 2001, at the Long Term Care Unit of the Fulton County Medical
Center, McConnellsburg. Born Aug. 26, 1910, in Tyrone, he was a son of
the late John and Flossie (Knepper) Shaw. He was married to A. Virginia
Elliott June 12, 1940. Mrs. Shaw survives at the Leisure Living Nursing
Home in Fort Littleton, along with the following children: Eric Shaw of
Altadena, Calif.; Arvid Shaw, Waterfall; Crystal Powers and Eda
Pinkston, both of Altadena, Calif. There are six grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren. One brother and one sister are deceased. Mr. Shaw
was of the Protestant faith. He retired in 1976 from Letterkenny Army
Depot, Chambersburg, and was also involved in farming during his life.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army. Funeral services will
be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 15, at the M.R. Brown Funeral Home,
Hustontown. Interment will be made in the Mt. Tabor Cemetery,
Hustontown, R.D. 

Dorothy A. WITTERS, 77, a resident of the Veterans Home in
Hollidaysburg, formerly of 3925 Walnut Ave. Altoona, died Saturday,
March 10, 2001, at the home. Born Dec. 19, 1923, in Huntingdon, she was
a daughter of the late Aloysius and Elizabeth (Harker) Glass. She
married Donald J. Witters June 30, 1941, in Hagerstown, Md. He preceded
her in death in 1984. Surviving are four children: Ronald J. Witters of
Cassville, James M. Witters of Altoona, Kathleen A. Korbar of
Springville, N.Y, and Sherry J. Wilson of Pittsburgh. There are 12
grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. One brother and a sister
also survive: James R. Glass of Huntingdon. and Alma Hooper of Altoona.
Six brothers are deceased. Mrs. Witters was a member of Our Lady of
Lourdes Catholic Church, Altoona, where she was a nember of the
Christian Mothers. A graduate of Huntingdon High School, she had been
employed as sales clerk by Sears. She was a member of the Glendale
Pontoon Boat Club and enjoyed painting, arranging flowers, square
dancing, camping and fishing. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m.
Wednesday, March 14, at the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.
Interment will be made in the Calvary Cemetery, Altoona. 

Charles Lynn STEVENS, 57, of Box 313, Oneida Township, Huntingdon, R.D.
2, died Saturday, March 10, 2001, at 10:45 a.m., at his Oneida Township
home, following an extended illness. Born May 11, 1943, in Huntingdon,
he was a son of the late Charles F. and Jeanne (Guyer) Stevens.
Surviving are twin sons Keith Thomas Stevens of Huntingdon and Kevin
Lynn Stevens of Mill Creek; son Kristopher Franklin Stevens of
Huntingdon; and a daughter, Melissa Lee Morris, Mill Creek. There are
five grandchildren. One sister, Karen Grazier of Huntingdon, R.R. 1,
survives. His longtime companion of 11 years, Suzan Bowser, also
survives.. A graduate of Huntingdon High School with the Class of 1960,
he attended the Gransome Electronic School in Washington, D.C. Mr.
Stevens worked for a number of years as a self-employed contractor. He
attended the Fifteenth Street United Methodist Church, Huntingdon, and
was a member of the Amateur Radio Association of Huntingdon County. Mr.
Stevens had been a lifetime resident of Huntingdon County. A memorial

Helen M. BENNETT, 90, formerly of Huntingdon, died Monday, March 12,
2001, at 3:40 p.m., at Huntingdon Manor, Huntingdon. Born Sept. 12,
1910, in Huntingdon, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Virginia
(Wheeler) Hummel. She married Clarence B. Bennett Aug. 3, 1927, in
Huntingdon. He preceded her in death Jan. 9, 1975. Two children survive,
Mrs. Jay (Gladys) Coffman of Huntingdon, R.D. 1, and Donald I. Bennett
Sr. of Huntingdon, R.D. 4, along with 14 grandchildren, 20
great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. Two sons,
Clarence Jr. and Richard, preceded her in death. Also surviving are the
following siblings: Winifred Henney and Clara Price, both of Huntingdon;
Virginia Swanger, State College; Erma Oldring, Spartanburg, S.C.; and
Richard Hummel, Massillon, Ohio. Two brothers and a sister, Elmer, John
and Ruth Murphy, are deceased. Mrs. Bennett was of the Protestant faith.
She was employed by the Susquehanna Silk Mill and Owens Corning
Fiberglas in Huntingdon. She also worked at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital
in the nursery and retired from Gerbo Footwear in Huntingdon in 1976.
She enjoyed sewing, quilting and making afghans. Funeral services will
be held Thursday, March 15, at 2 p.m., at the Robert E. Peters Funeral
Home, Huntingdon, with the Rev. James L. Blair officiating. Interment
will be made in the Riverview Cemetery, Huntingdon. 

Madeline Focht JAMISON, 77, of York, formerly of State College and
Huntingdon, died Monday, March 12, 2001, at Normandy Ridge Nursing Home.
Born Feb. 25, 1925, in Huntingdon, she was the daughter of the late
James W. and Margaret (Donovan) Focht. She married Alfred J. Jamison
Oct. 19, 1946. He preceded her in death November 1988. A daughtel Carol
Gladfelter of Spring Grove, and two grandsons survive. One daughter,
Patsy Hammond, preceded her in death Nov. 2, 1993. A graduate of
Huntingdon High School, she was secretary for the Salvation Army in
Huntingdon. She was a member of the Abbey Reformed Church, United Church
of Christ in Huntingdon and the Senior Citizens Center of State College.
She was a Girl Scout member and active leader for 25 years. Funeral
services will be held Friday, March 16, at the Koch Funeral Home, 2401
S. Atherton St., State College, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Joseph F.
Krabill officiating. Interment will be made in the Riverview Cemetery,
Huntingdon. 

Edgar F. BAKER, 85, of R.D. 1, Box 74, James Creek, died unexpectedly
Tuesday, March 13, 2001, at Nason Hospital, Roaring Spring. Born Aug. 6,
1915, in Riddlesburg, he was a son of the late Avery and Mary
(Stapleton) Baker. He married Mona J. Stone April 6, 1978, at Saxton,
R.D. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. George (Joanne) Riley and Mrs.
John (Janie) Stetchock, both of James Creek, and a stepdaughter, Mrs.
George (Dotty) Snyder, Hollidaysburg. There are six grandchildren, seven
great-grandchildren, one step-grandson and two step-great-grandchildren.
One great-granddaughter is deceased. A brother, Avery R. "Jack" Baker of
Huntingdon, survives. Two sisters and a brother preced ed him in death:
Bessie Fisher, Phyllis Tanner and Wayne Baker. Mr. Baker attended the
Hesston Community Chapel. He was a member of the Woodcock Valley Lions
Club and enjoyed boating and hunting. He repaired small engines and
retired from Owens Corning Fiberglas in 1977, after 27 years of service.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 16, at 2 p.m., at the D.
Ronald Long Funeral Chapel, Saxton, with Pastor James S. Blair and
Pastor Dan Ewald officiating. Interment will be made in the Russellville
Methodist Cemetery. 

George M. "Iggy" WITTERS, 45, of 325 Caravan Ct., Middletown, died at
9:33 a.m. Tuesday, March 13, 2001, at the Milton S. Hershey Medical
Center, Hershey. Born Oct. 11, 1955, in Mount Union, he was the son of
the late James E. Sr. and Lulu R (Gillam) Witters. He is survived by his
wife, the former Judith L. Nicaise, and two children: George David
Witters of Middletown and Heather Early of Enola. There are two
grandchildren. The following sister and brothers also survive: Sandy
Zito, Middletown; James E. Witters Jr., York Haven; Joseph F. Witters
Sr., Middletown and Stanley E. Witters, Killeen, Texas. One stepbrother,
Joseph Rovito of Harrisburg, survives. A brother, Perry Witters, peceded
him in death. Mr. Witters attended the Mount Union Area High School and
the John Harris High School in Harrisburg. He had been employed by
Classic Dry Cleaners in Lemoyne. He was a member of the Middletown
Hunters and Anglers, a member of the Middletown Moose Lodge and the
Highspire American Legion Post. He enjoyed fishing and was a drag racing
enthusiast. Mr. Witters was of the Protestant faith. The funeral service
will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 17, at the Robert D. Heath
Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dr. Kenneth Grundon officiating. Interment
will be made in the Germany Valley Cemetery, Shirleysburg R.R. 1. 

Helen Carmon (McCall) WEST, 94, a resident of The Oaks at Westminster
Woods, Huntingdon, died Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at 12:45 p.m., at The
Oaks. Born April 22, 1906, in Huntingdon, she was a daughter of the late
James S. and Mary (Brumbaugh) McCall. She married Dr. William B. West
Aug. 20, 1931,, in the First Methodist Church, Huntingdon, with the Rev.
E.B. Davidson conducting the ceremony. Dr. West preceded her in death
Jan. 27, 1998. One son and one daughter survive: Dr. William J. West and
Mary (West) Mason, both of Carlisle. There are six grandchildren and ten
great-grandchildren. Mrs. West had been a member of the First United
Methodist Church, Huntingdon, since 1917. She was, a charter member and
past president of the Women's Society of Christian Service; member of
Dorcas Circle of United Methodist Women; former member of the Auxiliary
to the Pennsylvania Medical Society; former member of the Women's League
of Juniata College; Friends of Huntingdon County Library; Juniata
College Library; life member of the Huntingdon County Historical
Society; and member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Educated in the public schools of Huntingdon, she was a 1923 graduate of
Huntingdon High School and a 1927 graduate of Juniata College. She was a
former teacher in the Warriors Mark High School. She had been a resident
of Huntingdon County since birth. A memorial service will be held at the
First United Methodist Church, Fifth and Mifflin streets, Huntingdon,
Sunday, March 18, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Doyle H. Klinger Jr.
officiating. Interment will be made in the Riverview Cemetery,
Huntinizdon. 

Jane S. WAKEFIELD, 75, of 2703 Cub Hill Rd., Baltimore, Md., formerly of
Huntingdon, died Tuesday, March 13, 2001, at Franklin Square Hospital,
Baltimore, Md., following an extended illness. Born March 16, 1925, in
McConnellstown, she was the daughter of the late Ellwood and Lillian
(Snare) States. She married William F. Wakefield May 24,1946, at the
McConnellstown Methodist Church, with the Rev. Gombart officiating. Mr.
Wakefield survives at their Baltimore residence, along with three sons:
William F. Wakefield Jr., Richmond, Va.; Stephen L. Wakefield,
Baltimore, Md.; and Douglas B. Wakefield, Los Angeles, Calif. There are
five grandchildren. Two sisters and one brother survive: Betty Schell,
McConnellstown; Susan Hamilton, Akron, Ohio; and Kenneth States,
Jacksonville, Fla. Mrs. Wakefield was of the Methodist faith. She served
as past president of the Clerical Workers Association in the Baltimore
County public school system; was previously active in the Bucknell Wives
Club from 1949 until 1951; was a member of the Chesapeake Region of the
Antique Automobile Club of America for several years; and was a member
of the Golden Radio Buffs Club of Maryland. Mrs. Wakefield retired as
executive secretary to the principals in the Baltimore County public
schools after 25 years. Educated in the Huntingdon public schools, she
graduated from Huntingdon High School in 1943. After high school, she
worked for two years at the J.C. Blair Company as a factory worker and
was also employed at the Glenn T. Martin Company for six years as a
timekeeper. She had been a resident of Baltimore since 1951 and had
lived at her current residence for 40 years. She enjoyed sewing, loved
birds and baseball. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday,
March 16, at the John B. Brown Funeral Home, Huntingdon, with the Rev.
Dr. Ruth Ann Campagna officiating. Interment will be made in the
Huntingdon Memorial Gardens, Huntingdon, R.D. 1.

Esther H. FRAKER, 80, a resident of Green Ridge Village, Newville,
formerly of Fort Littleton, died at 12:30 a.m. Thursday, March 15, 2001,
at the Swaim Health Center, Green Ridge Village. Born June 28, 1920, in
Dublin Township, Fulton County, she was married to Glenn E. Fraker Oct.
26, 1940. Mr. Fraker preceded her in death Aug. 5 1993. One daughter,
Pamela D. Black of Newville survives, along with three grandchildren and
one great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Glenda
A. Desjardins in 1996, and a brother. Mrs. Fraker attended the former
Fort Littleton United Methodist Church. She retired from Sagner, Inc.,
McConnellsburg. Private services and interment will be held at the
convenience of the family. Funeral arrangements are under the direction
of the M.R. Brown Funeral Home, Hustontown. 

Linda L. GARTLAND, 64, of Mapleton, R.R. 1, died at 7:40 p.m. Wednesday,
March 14, 2001, in the Altoona Hospital. Born Feb. 25, 1937, in
Huntingdon, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Ketura (Werner)
Harper. She married Terry L. Gartland Sr. Mr. Gartland survives at home,
along with the following children: David Gartland, Maryland; Terry L.
Gartland Jr., Buffalo, N.Y.; Susan Scott, Clarksville, Tenn.; Jodi
Waite, Three Springs, R.R. 1; Barry Gartland, Mount Union, R.D.; Michael
Gartland, Saltillo; and Bobbi Jo Staley, Mapleton, R.D. 1. There are 20
grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Two daughters, Candy Booher
and Billie Jo Gartland, are deceased. Five siblings survive: Faye Cella,
Huntingdon; Donna Hamilton, Mount Union; Gail McKenzie, St. Petersburg,
Fla.; Frank Harper Jr., Mapleton, R.R. 1; and Barry Harper, Mapleton,
R.D. Mrs. Gartland was a homemaker and at one time served as the
Orbisonia-Rockhill Little League baseball coach. Private funeral
services will be held at the convenience of the family. 

Phyllis (Harris) LEEDOM, 82, of 2401 Byron Court, Indiana, formerly of
Huntingdon, died Thursday, March 15, 2001, at 12:15 a.m., at the home of
her friends, Daniel and Cathy Walraven in Indiana. She died following an
extended illness. Born Nov. 2, 1918, in Huntingdon, she was the daughter
of the late Jesse H. and Grace (Bousum) Harris. She married Robert B.
Leedom June 25, 1938, in Hollidaysburg, with the Rev. L.I. Hart, uncle
of the groom, conducting the ceremony. Mr. Leedom preceded her in death
Dec. 23, 1990. One son and one daughter are deceased: Jerry Frederick
Leedom died in 1968 and Linda Jean Teeters in 1988. There are two
grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. The last surviving member of
her immediate family, she was preceded in death by three brothers and
two sisters: Howard Harris, Clarence "Bud" Harris, Frederick Harris,
Vera Edwards and M. Anna Belle Coffman. Mrs. Leedom was a member of the
Fundamental Baptist Church in Indiana. For 28 years, she was employed as
a nursing assistant at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital. She was educated in
the Huntingdon public schools. A resident of Huntingdon County since
birth, she had lived at her current residence since 1996. A memorial
service will be held March 25, at the Fundamental Baptist Church,
Indiana, at 2 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the John B. Brown
Funeral Home, Huntingdon, Saturday, March 17, at 2 p.m., with the Rev.
Wilber Barber and the Rev. Dan Walraven officiating. Interment will be
made in the Hollidaysburg Presbyterian Cemetery, Hollidaysburg. 

Linda Lee MITCHELL, 63, of 170 Overview Drive, Wayne Township, Mount
Union, died at 3:55 p.m. Thursday, March 15, 2001, at J.C. Blair
Memorial Hospital, following a long illness. She was born June 4, 1937,
in Huntingdon, the daughter of the late Ernie and Agnes (Piper)
Lightner. She married Robert W. Mitchell Jan. 1, 1953, in Huntingdon.
Her husband survives at home. She is also survived by three sons: Gary
L. Mitchell of Mount Union; Robert D. Mitchell of Naples, Fla. and
Richard Mitchell of Naples, Fla., and one daughter, Mrs. Pete (Vicki)
Johnson of Naples-Golden Gate, Fla. She is survived by two sisters: Mrs.
Doc (Neda) Kyper of Huntingdon and Sue Kaiser of Naples-Golden Gate,
Fla. Four brothers also survive in Florida: Marvin Lightner of
Naples-Golden Gate, Ken Lightner of Naples-Golden Gate, Don Lighter of
Naples-Golden Gate and Larry Lightner of Panhandle. Four grandsons and
two granddaughters also survive. She was preceded in death by a son,
Donald William Mitchell, and sister, Lorna Doner. Mrs. Mitchell was a
member of the First Church of the Nazerene in Petersburg. She graduated
from Huntingdon High School and moved to Mount Union in 1987 after
living in Naples and Bonita Springs, Fla. She was predominately a
homemaker; however, she also worked a number of years at the Corner
Store in Bonita Springs and, most recently, as a caregiver at Meadowview
Manor, McVeytown. A funeral service will be held at noon, Monday, March
19, 2001, at the Cutright-Speck Juniata Valley Chapel, 412 Main Street,
Alexandria with Pastor Art Roxby officiating. Interment will be made at
Cedar Grove Cemetery. 

Frank D. COX, 79, of 1916 Barley Rd., York, formerly of Mount Union and
Shippensburg, died unexpectedly Thursday, March 15, 2001, at the York
Hospital. Born April 13, 1921, in Mount Union, he was the son of the
late David Frank and Anna (Kilser) Cox. He was first married to Sara Ann
Hanks in August 1947. He later married Lena M. Blake Nov. 30, 1974. She
preceded him in death Nov. 14, 1993. Three children survive: Terry D.
Cox of Allenport, Mount Union, R.R. 2; Mrs. David (Nancy L.) Cramer,
Thomasville; and David H. Cox, Phoenix, Ariz. There are nine
grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Two grandchildren and an
infant sister are deceased. Mr. Cox was a veteran of the U.S. Army,
where he served during World War II. For 27 years, he had been employed
at Letterkenny Army Depot, Chambersburg, retiring in 1983. He was a
member of the VFW Post No. 6168, Shippensburg, and the American Legion
Post No. 107, Mount Union. Mr. Cox was of the Methodist faith. Funeral
services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 19, at the Robert D.
Heath Funeral Home, Mount Union, with Pastor Keith A. Fissel
officiating. Interment will be made in the Haven Rest Memorial Park,
Shirleysburg, R.R. 1. 

Mary Lou CALABRIA, 72, of Lincoln Way East, McConnellsburg, died at 5:25
p.m. Thursday, March 15, 2001, at the Fulton County Medical Center,
McConnellsburg. Born May 5, 1928, in Saxton, she was a daughter of the
late Marl H. Garlock and Helen A. (Gogley) Garlock, who survives in
McConnellsburg. She was first married to Charles B. Taylor, who preceded
her in death. She then married Dominec A. Calabria, who also preceded
her in death. Along with her mother, she is survived by two sons: David
C. Taylor of Williamsport, Md., and Richard G. Taylor of McConnellsburg.
There are seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Five
brothers, John "Jack" Garlock, Richard Garlock, Joe Garlock, Pat Garlock
and Marl H. Garlock Jr., preceded her in death. Mrs. Calabria was a
member of the McConnellsburg United Methodist Church and the Martha
Curtis Chapter No. 341, Order of the Eastern Star, Chambersburg. She was
the owner/operator of Ebensburg Floral for 14 years and prior to that
she owned and operated Taylor's Flowers and Gifts in McConnellsburg, the
Apothecary Shop in McConnellsburg and The Alphabet Shop in Mercersburg.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 18, at the
McConnellsburg United Methodist Church, 121 N. Second St.,
McConnellsburg, with the Rev. Donald Bard officiating. Interment will be
made in the Union Cemetery, McConnellsburg, R.D.

James H. BOOK, 88, a resident of Woodland Retirement Center, Orbisonia,
formerly of Box 53, Shirleysburg, died at 11:15 a.m. Saturday, March 17,
2001, at the center. Born July 2, 1912, in Cromwell Township, Huntingdon
County, he was the son of the late Frank James and Mary Jane (Cummins)
Book. He was united in marriage to Ruth C. Morgan May 21, 1932, in
Hagerstown, Md., with the Rev. G.M. Gilliam officiating. Mrs. Book
survives at home, along with their six sons: Richard J. Book, John B.
Book and Gene H. Book, all of Shirleysburg, R.D. 1; Joe G. Book, Newton
Hamilton; Leroy D. Book, Chambersburg; and Garry M. Book, Three Springs.
There are 18 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. One daughter,
Mary Jane Beckwith, and a grandson, preceded him in death. The last
surviving member of his immediate family, he was preceded in death by
the following siblings: Coyle Book, Glen Book and Clara Mae Whitsel. Mr.
Book owned and operated Book's Garage in Hill Valley from 1954 until
1974. Prior to that, he had been employed by Harbison-Walker
Refractories, Mount Union, and had worked for Boyd Ewing, Orbisonia. He
was a member of the Singer's Gap United Methodist Church. The funeral
service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 20, at the Robert D. Heath
Funeral Home, Mount Union, with the Rev. Rich Morris officiating.
Interment will be made in the Mount Union Cemetery. 

Deloris J. SWOPE, 62, of 120 S. Division St., Mount Union, died at 8:26
p.m. Saturday, March 17, 2001, at her home. Her death was unexpected.
Born March 22, 1938, in Mapleton, she was the daughter of the late John
and Margaret (Hess) Latherow. She first married Junior Varner and on May
22, 1980, she married John Swope. Mr. Swope survives at home, along with
the following children: John "Ed" Varner, Wrangletown Road, Mount Union;
Belinda Foster, Mapleton, R.R. 1; David Varner, Mount Union; Richard
Varner, Newton Hamilton; Douglas Varner, Mount Union; and Nancy Kidd,
Newton Hamilton. There are 18 grandchildren and four great-
grandchildren. Two sisters, Josephine Montgomery of McVeytown, R.D. 1,
and Diana Latherow of Mount Union, survive. Mrs. Swope was a member of
the Beech Run Church of the Brethren, where she was very active in
church affairs. She was a deaconess, a deacon secretary, served on the
church board, was a member of the church choir and was Witness Communion
Secretary. She was a former member of the Jack's Mountain Lioness Club.
Mrs. Swope attended the Captain Jack High School and was a homemaker.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 21, at the
Beech Run Church of the Brethren, Mapleton, R.R. 1, with the Rev. Connie
Maclay and the Rev. Donald Fomwalt officiating. Interment will be made
in the Mount Union Cemetery. 

Glenn C. PETERSON, 74, of HC 62, Shade Gap, died at 2:38 p.m. Saturday,
March 17, 2001, at the Chambersburg Hospital, Chambersburg. Born Oct.
22, 1926, in Tell Township, Huntingdon County, he was the son of the
late Lawrence and Hazel (Parsons) Peterson. He married Pauline June Bair
May 30, 1952. Mrs. Peterson survives at home, along with the following
children: Glenn Peterson Jr. and Mary Kay Kling, both of Shade Gap,
Tracey Brown of Fannettsburg, Mike Peterson of Shade Gap and Kelly
Peterson of Greencastle. There are ten grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren. Five sisters and two brothers survive: Yvette
George, Burtonsville, Md.; Dale Peterson, Shirleysburg; Rosie Goss,
Lewistown; Helen Morgan, Lewistown;, Beryl Scott and Mary Grove, both of
Shirleysburg; and Charles B. Peterson, Blairs Mills. Mr. Peterson was a
lifelong member of Salem United Methodist Church, Blairs Mills, R.D.
From 1945 until 1946, he served in the U.S. Army. He, retired in 1998,
after 52 years of service as a truck driver for Amstan Trucking. He was
also engaged in farming. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m.
Wednesday, March 21, at the Martin R. Brown Funeral Home, Orbisonia,
with the Rev. Earl Barrick officiating. Interment will be made in the
Salem Cemetery, Blairs Mills, R.D. 

Janet Louise SHEHAN, 57, of Brooklyn Drive, McConnellsburg, died at 9:20
a.m. Saturday, March 17, 2001, at the Chambersburg Hospital,
Chambersburg. Born Oct. 13, 1943, in Hustontown, she was the daughter of
the late Robert Clyde and Margaret (Shaw) Hann. She was married to Frank
L. Shehan April 23, 1965. Mr. Shehan survives at home, along with a son
and a daughter: Frank Shehan Jr. and Kimberly Ann Stallman, both of
McConnellsburg. There are four grandchildren and one step-grandchild.
Three sisters survive: Doris Strait and Lois Strait, both of
McConnellsburg, and Joyce Bookheimer of Hustontown. Several nieces and
nephews survive. One brother, Robert Clyde Hann Jr., died at infancy.
Mrs. Shehan was a member of the Siloam United Methodist Church in
Harrisonville, where she was a former ladies auxiliary member and was
active as a festival planner at the church. She attended the Hustontown
High School and was a homemaker. In earlier years, she had been employed
at Sagner, Inc., McConnellsburg. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m.
Tuesday, March 20, at the M.R. Brown Funeral Home, Hustontown, with
Pastor Kenneth Cornelius officiating. Interment will be made in the
Hustontown Cemetery. 

Robert D. PERRIN, 65, of 131 Longs Run Rd., Hopewell, died Sunday, March
18, 2001, at 8:55 p.m., at the James E. VanZandt VA Medical Center,
Altoona, following a brief illness. Born Oct. 28, 1935, in Chaneysville,
he was the son of the late William and Lylah (Swartzwelder) Perrin. He
first married Doris Jean Dell and later Paulette Steele. They both
survive. Three children survive: Mrs. Jason (Sharon) Williams, Hopewell;
Mrs. Danny (Bobbi Kay) Logan, Chambersburg; and Dale Robert Perrin, at
home. There are three grandchildren. Two siblings, Mrs. Richard
(Marilyn) Koontz and James Perrin, both of Everett, sur- vive. Two
brothers and a sister, Richard Perrin, Floyd "Mick" Perrin and Ivalene
Blahay, preceded him in death. Mr. Perrin was of the Protestant faith.
He served in the U.S. Army and was a member and on the board of
directors of Hopewell VFW and was a past commander of the Six Mile Run
American Legion Post No. 556. For 20 years, he was employed by Everett
Hardwood. He retired in 1991 from Standard Register in Bedford after 27
years of service. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed gardening and
socializing. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 21, at 11
a.m., at the D. Ronald Long Funeral Chapel, Saxton, with Pastor Alfred
Chamberlain officiating. Interment will be made in the Langdondale
Cemetery, with full military honors. 

Margaret L. MAGLIERE, 76, of 116 W. Chestnut St., Mount Union, died at
8:26 p.m. Friday, March 16, 2001, at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital,
Huntingdon, following a brief illness. Born Nov. 8, 1924, in Mount
Union, she was the daughter of the late George and Anna (Pastva)
Calupca. She was united in marriage to Joseph J. Magliere Sept. 27,
1947, at St. Catherine's Roman Catholic Church, Mount Union. Her husband
preceded her in death Aug. 22, 1993. Surviving are three children: Mrs.
Robert (Carmella) Lear of Mount Union, R.D. 1, Mrs. Donald (Rosemarie)
Sentman of Mount Union and Joseph M. Magliere of Manhattan, N.Y. There
are five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. One brother and two
sisters survive: Stephen Calupca of Mount Union; Marian Pandolfino of
Woodland Retirement Center, Orbisonia, and Frances Calupca of Mount
Union. The following brothers and sisters preceded her in death: Pauline
Torsell, Andrew Calupca, Anna Treaster, Jack Calupca and infants John
and Anne Calupca. Mrs. Magliere was a 1942 graduate of Mount Union High
School. She had been employed at one time by the Radle Farm Implement
Store in Mount Union, Owens Corning Fiberglas in Huntingdon and L. Greif
Brothers Manufacturing in Mount Union. She retired in 1974. She was a
member of the Sons of Italy, Mount Union. A former Mount Union Booster
Club member, she had been active in the Mount Union youth baseball and
peewee football programs. Mrs. Magliere was a former director of the
Mount Union Food Bank and had served on the Mount Union Borough Council.
She was a former director of the Huntingdon County Board of Assistance
and had been active in the Mount Union Area Redevelopment Authority. She
had been secretary/treasurer for the Military Railway Service Veterans,
734th. A member of St. Catherine's Roman Catholic Church in Mount Union,
she served as lector and greeter at the church and was a former member
of the Catholic Daughters Mount Union Chapter. A funeral Mass will be
held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 20, at St. Catherine's Roman Catholic
Church, Mount Union, with the Rev. Elwood Figurelle officiating.
Interment will be made in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Tyrone. 

Wayne L. COOKSON, 83, of Westminster, Md., died Friday, March 16, 2001,
at Homewood at Plum Creek, Hanover. Born July 19, 1917, in Grove City,
he was the son of the lace John and Aletha (Shaw) Cookson. He was
married to Mary Lou Adams, his wife of 59 years. Surviving along with
his wife are two daughters: Mrs. Les (Patricia L.) Martin of Hanover and
Mrs. Craig (Barbara C.) Wagner, Fairfax Station, Va. There are four
grandchildren. A grandson, Lance Cookson Martin, preceded him in death
in 1997. One brother, Joseph Cookson, is also deceased. Before retiring,
he worked for J.C. Penney for 42 years and was manager of the Huntingdon
store for eight years. He managed the Westminster, Md. store, for 14
years, after leaving Huntingdon. After retiring, he worked for five
years for the First National Bank in Westminster. Mr. Cookson was a
member of the Westminster United Methodist Church and was a volunteer at
the soup kitchen. He was a member of the Grove City Masonic Lodge No.
603, F&AM, and was a life member of the Scottish Rite in New Castle. A
U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he served as a first lieutentant. He
was a member of the VFW Molleville Farm Post No. 467; American Legion
Carroll Post No. 31; and BPO Elks Lodge No. 1579, Grove City. Funeral
services were held March 19 at the Westminster United Methodist Church,
162 E. Main St., Westminster, Md., with the Rev. Dr. David A. Highfield
officiating. Interment was made in Westminster Cemetery. 

Rosina "Pat" Maria DeMANSS, 76, of Stevensville, Md., died Saturday,
March 10, 2001, at the Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, Md.
Born June 1, 1924, in East Stroudsburg, she was the daughter of the late
Charles Carr and Rosina S. Patterson. She married Charles John DeManss
Dec. 24, 1949. He preceded her in death April 25, 2000. Surviving are
two sons and two daughters: Michael DeManss of Compton, Md.; Stephen
DeManss of Ellicott City, Md.; Marcia Stewart, Huntingdon; and Karen
Feagley, also of Huntingdon. There are eight grandchildren. One brother,
Charles Patterson Jr., preceded her in death. Mrs. DeManss graduated
from East Stroudsburg High School in 1941, and from East Stroudsburg
State Teachers College in 1946. She received her master's degree in
education from Johns Hopkins University. She was a teacher at
Catonsville Junior High School for 19 years. A long time resident of
Catonsville, Md., she was a member of St. Mark's Parish in Catonsville.
She later retired to Kent Island and was a member of St. Christopher's
Catholic Church in Chester. A funeral mass was held March 13, at St.
Christopher's Catholic Church in Chester. Md. 

Terrance Lee KEPPLER, 40, of R.D. 1, Box 19, Walker Township, Hesston,
died Sunday, March 18, 2001, at 9:13 p.m., at his Walker Township home.
Born Jan. 7, 1961, in Huntingdon, he was the son of Theodore J. Keppler
and Helen M. Sheets He married the former Sandra L. Summers. Surviving,
along with his wife of Huntingdon, are his father, Theodore J. Keppler,
his mother, Helen M. (Sheets) Moore and his stepmother, Deborah A.
(Smith) Keppler, all of Huntingdon. One son and a daughter, David H.
Coburn of Hesston and Carrie Lee Keppler of Huntingdon, survive. One
sister, Mrs. Aaron (Sharree Louise) Ritchey of Duncansville, survives.
Mr. Keppler had been employed for the past 14 years at Bonney Forge in
Mount Union as a set-up operator. He was a member of the VFW Post No.
1754 of Huntingdon and the Loyal Order of the Moose, Lodge No. 223,
Huntingdon. A 1978 graduate of Huntingdon Area High School, he had been
a lifetime resident of Huntingdon County. A memorial service will be
held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 21, at the Cutright-Speck Funeral
Home, 207 Ridge Road, Smithfield, Huntingdon, with the Rev. David L.
Dearing officiating. Private interment will be made in the Goodman
Cemetery, Henderson Township. 

Terry Lee JURY, 43, of King Street, Pottstown, formerly of 4556 Back
Maitland Road, McClure, died at noon Sunday, March 18, 2001, at the
Pottstown Memorial Hospital. Born Jan. 14, 1958, in Lewistown, he was
the son of Willis D. and Colleen (Carolus) Jury of 4556 Back Maitland
Road, McClure. He was a 1975 graduate of Chief Logan High School. He was
the food and beverage director at Pottstown Ramada Inn for 15 years. He
attended Paintersville CMA Church and was a member of the Decatur Grange
1920 and the Lewistown Moose Lodge 143. Services will be held at 2 p.m.
Friday at Hoenstine Funeral Home Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown, with the
Rev. George H. Mark officiating. Interment will be in St. Mark's
Episcopal Cemetery. 

Mildred (Lorenz) Kemp WILLIAMS, 77, a resident of The Oaks at
Westminster Woods, Huntingdon, formerly of llth Street, Huntingdon, died
Monday, March 19, 2001, at 11:42 p.m., at The Oaks, following an
extended illness. Born Feb. 22, 1924, in Huntingdon, she was the
daughter of the late Edward H. and Minnie Etta (Brown) Lorenz. She first
married Raymond D. Kemp Jan. 12, 1946, who preceded her in death Jan. 1,
1966. She later married Ernest R. Williams Aug. 11, 1973. Mr. Williams
preceded her in death Sept. 16, 1999. Two sons survive: Raymond D.
"Mike" Kemp of Huntingdon and Alan Lorenz Kemp of Pennsylvania Furnace.
There are five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Two sisters
and one brother preceded her in death: Mary Louise Lorenz, Charles
Arthur Lorenz and Hazel Ruth Flanagan. Mrs. Williams was the last
surviving member of her immediate family. Mrs. Williams was a member of
the Abbey Reformed Church, United Church of Christ in Huntingdon, where
she taught Sunday School, was active in the Women's Fellowship, belonged
to the Dorcas Class and was a former deacon and elder. She was also a
member and past worthy matron of the Order of the Eastern Star Trio
Chapter No. 544, Mechanicsburg; was a charter member of Beta Sigma Phi
Sorority, Delta Gamma Preceptor Chapter in Huntingdon; member of the
auxiliary to the BPO Elks Lodge NO. 976, where she was past.president
and was honored as Woman of the Year. Mrs. Williams also held membership
in the auxiliaries of the Frank P. Hommon Post No. 24, American Legion,
and Standing Stone Post 1754 VFW, both of Huntingdon; Women of the Moose
Chapter 220, Huntingdon; and Jobel Court No. 11, Ladies Oriental Shrine
of North America. She also served as a den mother for a cub scout troop.
A 1941 graduate of Huntingdon High School and a 1945 graduate of Juniata
College, she served as substitute teacher in the Huntingdon County
schools. She had been a resident of Huntingdon County since birth and
enjoyed playing bridge, reading, cooking and needlecrafts. A funeral
service will be held Saturday, March 24, at 11 a.m., at the John B.
Brown Funeral Home, Huntingdon, with the Rev. Gary H. Marcy officiating.
Interment will be made in the Riverview Cemetery, Huntingdon. 

Kenneth C. LIGHTNER, 79, of the Hollidaysburg Veterans Home, formerly of
627 Church St., Huntingdon, died Monday, March 19, 2001, at 1 p.m., at
Bon Secours Holy Family Regional Health System, Altoona, following an
extended illness. Born June 30, 1921, in Charter Oak, Petersburg, R.D.,
he was the son of the late Plummer and Delia (Moffit) Lightner. He
married Elizabeth J. Giffin Dec. 10, 1942. Mrs. Lightner preceded him in
death June 8, 1998. Surviving are two sons: Terry L. Lightner of
Huntingdon and Drew A. Lightner of Saltillo. There are four
grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
One brother, Leroy Lightner of Petersburg, survives. Two sisters, two
brothers and a half-brother, preceded him in death: Mrs. Calvin (Clara)
Dickson, Mrs. Mickey (Ella) Mozi, Harold Lightner, Richard Lightner and
William Moffit. Mr. Lightner was a member of the First United Methodist
Church, Huntingdon. He was employed by Hartman's and Strickler's Dry
Cleaners, and later he was self-employed in the dry cleaning business,
operating Ken's Cleaners for 25 years, until 1975. He was employed by
the Huntingdon Area School District until his retirement in 1994. He was
a 1941 graduate of Petersburg Vocational High School. During World War
II, he served in the U.S. Army in the American Theatre, with Battery D,
82nd Coast Artillery. He attained the rank of technician fifth grade.
Mr. Lightner had lived at his current residence since January 1997. He
enjoyed flea markets, collecting, and spending time with his family.
Earlier he also enjoyed hunting. A funeral service will be held at the
John B. Brown Funeral Home, Huntingdon, Friday, March 23, at 10 a.m.,
with the Rev. Tom Warne officiating. Interment will be made in the
Mooresville Cemetery, Petersburg, R.D. 

Dean C. LOHR, 84, of Entriken, R.R. 1, died at 8 p.m. Monday, March 19,
2001, at his home. His death was unexpected. Born Sept. 21, 1916, in
Hooversville, Somerset County, he was the son of the late Herlen B. and
Elizabeth (Smith) Lohr. He married Beatrice 1. Morningstar April 29,
1940, in Winchester, Va. She preceded him in death April 6, 1981. Earl
Hurley of Rumford, Maine, and Mrs. Alan (Lucille) Morningstar of James
Creek, R.R. 1, were reared in the Lohr home. One sister, Dorothy Fouse
of James Creek, R.R. 1, survives. He was preceded in death by four
brothers and a sister: Boyd Lohr, Herman Lohr and Paul Lohr, an infant
brother, and Sylvia Carper. Mr. Lohr was a member of the Woodcock Valley
Bible Church and the Markiesburg Fire Company. For 16 years, he worked
for Jones and Laughlin Steel Mill in Pittsburgh. For 31 years, he was a
bus driver for the Huntingdon Area School District, retiring in 1983. He
was an avid hunter and was interested in archaeology. Funeral services
will be held Thursday, March 22, at 2 p.m., at the Woodcock Valley Bible
Church, with Pastor Cxeorge "Buddy" Baird officiating. Interment will be
made in the Entriken Cemetery. 

Marsden J. PROUGH, 70, of HC 1, Huntingdon, was pronounced dead at 7:20
a.m. Tuesday, March 20, 2001, at his home in Union Township, Huntingdon
County. Born April 4, 1930, in Union Township, Huntingdon County, he was
a son of the late Raymond and Myrtle (Crownover) Prough. He married
Esther (Cramer) Allen Aug. 23, 1969. Mrs. Prough survives at home, along
with six step-children: Anna Stapleton, Mount Union; John Allen, HC 1,
Huntindgon; Bill Allen, Warren, Ohio; Tim Allen, HC 1, Huntingdon; Dan
Allen, Huntingdon; and David Allen, Altoona. Four siblings, Anna
Chilcote of Calvin, Betty Leonard of Saltillo, Larry Prough of HCR 1,
Broad Top, and Sharon Prough of Shade Gap, survive. One step-sister,
Carolyn Allen of HC 1, Huntingdon, survives. He was preceded in death by
three brothers and three sisters: Clair, Robert, Cloyd, Virginia,
Shirley and Rosie. In his younger years, Mr. Prough attended the Harmony
Church of God in Calvin, R.D. During his life, he was employed as a
logger and lumberman. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday,
March 23, at the Robert I. McClain Funeral Home, Cassville, with the
Rev. Donald Henderson officiating. Interment will be made in the Trough
Creek Valley Baptist Cemetery, Calvin, R.D. 

Ronald Eugene LOUDER Sr., 73, of 1116 Warm Springs Ave., Huntingdon,
died Tuesday, March 20, 2001, at 9:20 p.m., at J.C. Blair Memorial
Hospital, Huntingdon, following an extended illness. Born Dec. 29, 1927,
in Wood, he was the son of the late Warren Louder and Mabel P.
(Cutshall) Ambrose. He married Aileen Miller Aug. 22, 1947, at the home
of the Rev. Frank Montgomery in State College. Mrs. Louder survives at
home, along with two sons: Thomas C. Louder of Huntingdon and Ronald E.
Louder Jr. of Ephrata. There are one granddaughter and several nieces
and nephews. Also surviving are two brothers and two sisters: Bernard
Ambrose, Ridgway; Malcolm Ambrose, Mrs. Charles (Joann Ambrose) Bishop
and Jennifer (Ambrose) Clark, all of Huntingdon. Two brothers, Maynard
Ambrose and Ernest Ambrose Jr., preceded him in death. Mr. Louder was a
member of the Abbey Reformed Church, United Church of Christ,
Huntingdon. Educated in the public schools of Huntingdon, he was a 1946
graduate of Huntingdon High School. During his high school years, he
excelled in football, basketball and baseball. He was a member of the
Huntingdon High School Championship basketball team of 1944-45 that won
26 straight games. As a senior, he was named an All-State quarterback in
football. In 1945, the football team was undefeated, winning 12 games.
As quarterback, he called the plays for the offense and defense and was
also the kicker and punter. He played baseball with the Huntingdon City
League from age 15 until 35, playing for the Moose and Knights of
Pythias teams. He coached the newly formed Reds team in the Huntingdon
Little League from 1962 until 1966, winning the Little League
Championship in 1966. He also coached the Elks Teener League team and
participated in sports as long as he was able. Mr. Louder was a member
and past trustee of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Lodge
No. 976, Huntingdon; the Frank P. Hommon Post No. 24, American, Legion;
and Standing Stone Post No. 1754, VFW, both of Huntingdon. He retired in
1993 from Chemung Supply Corporation in Elmira, N.Y, as a sales
representative. During World Way II, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps
in the American Theatre of Operations with the Marine Air Casual
Squadron 11, attaining the rank of private first class. He had lived at
his current residence since 1969. He enjoyed family, friends and boating
on Raystown Lake with his adventurous friends and his bi- weekly card
club. A BPO Elks memorial service will be held at the John B. Brown
Funeral Home, Saturday, March 24, at 8 p.m. A funeral service will be
held at the funeral home Sunday, March 25, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Gary
H. Marcy officiating. Interment will be made in the Riverview.Cemetery,
Huntingdon. 

P. Wayne BRODBECK, 80, of Three Springs, died at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday,
March 20, 2001, at the Jefferson Hospital, Jefferson Hills. Born Oct.
17, 1920, in Three Springs, he was the son of the late Aulton and Edna
(Masemore) Brodbeck. He was married to R. Hope Runk Jan. 18, 1941. Mrs.
Brodbeck survives at Alterra Clare Bridge, Jefferson Hills. One daughter
and one son survive: Bonnie Booher of Jefferson Hills and Robert
Brodbeck of Saltillo. There are four grandsons and five
great-grandchildren. One sister and one brother also survive: Anna Lee
Fraker and Glenn Brodbeck, both of Saltillo. Two brothers and a sister
are deceased. Mr. Brodbeck was a member of the First United Methodist
Church, Three Springs. He was a member of the Three Springs Lions Club
and formerly served on the Three Springs Borough Council. He was a 40-
year member of the Carpenter's Union in Pittsburgh. A World War II
veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in the Philippines. He was a member
of the Madden-Wennick Post No. 518, American Legion, Orbisonia. In his
earlier years, Mr. Brodbeck worked as a coal miner and farmer. He.
retired in 1985 from D.W. Miller, Inc., Huntingdon, where he had worked
as a carpenter on construction projects. Funeral services will be held
at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 24, at the Martin R. Brown Funeral Home,
Orbisonia, with Pastor Bonnie Ort officiating. Interment will be made in
the Three Springs Cemetery. 

George H. ROGERS, 42, of 314 Sixth Ave., Altoona, died at 8:50 a.m.
Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at the Moran Nursing Home, Bellwood, after a
brief illness. Born March 27, 1958, in Huntingdon, he was a son of Jesse
Covington and Margaretta L. Rogers. He was preceded in death by his
father and step-father, George H. Hewitt. His mother, Margaretta L.
Hewitt of Altoona survives, along with four brothers and five sisters:
Leroy E. Rogers Washington, D.C.; Richard J. Rogers, Albuquerque, N.M.;
Robert M. Rogers and Edward L. Rogers, both of Altoona; Edwina B.
Norris, Oshkosh, Wis.; Joyce E. Lubrano, Birdsboro; Betty A. Young, San
Antonio, Texas; LaJune 0. Rogers, Altoona; and Helen E. Rogers,
Washington, D.C. A step-sister, Olga McMickens of Philadelphia survives,
along with several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. A 1970 graduate of
Mount Union High School, he served in the US Navy. He, was a member of
the Mount Union Elks Lodge, the Tyrone VFW Post No. 4559, and the Tyrone
American Legion Post No. 281. He was last employed at the Giant Eagle
Food Store in Altoona. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 24,
at 2 p.m., at the Derman Funeral Home, Inc., Tyrone, with elder
Sylvester Barnes officiating. Interment will be made in the
Charlottesville Cemetery. 

Rachel H. (Fitzgerald) SWANEY, 94, of 1415 Mifflin St., Huntingdon, died
Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at 8:30 a.m., at Valley View Haven,
Belleville. Born April 27, 1906, in Donation, Oneida Township, she was
the daughter of the late Samuel and Emma (McElwain) Fitzgerald. She
married Benjamin F. Swaney in October 1928, in Hagerstown, Md. He
preceded her in death Jan. 24, 1989. One daughter and one son survive:
Mrs. James (Jean S.) Weir of Huntingdon and Larry B. Swaney of Raleigh,
N.C. There are four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. One son,
Joseph Lee Swaney, died in infancy. A half-sister, Hazel Miller,
preceded her in death. Mrs. Swaney was employed for many years as a
waitress at Kelly's Korner and Grubb's Diner, both in Smithfield. She
attended the Bellwood public schools. Mrs. Swaney had lived at her
Mifflin Street residence since 1946. A memorial service will be held at
St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church, Huntingdon, Friday, March 23, at
2:30 p.m., with the Rev. Peter Naschke officiating. Interment will be
made in the Riverview Cemetery, Huntingdon. 

Matthew Eli KELCE, doctor of osteopathy, 71, of Aaronsburg, died
Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at home. Born Nov. 30, 1929, in Rush
Township, he was a son of the late Matthew and Ruby Lewis Kelce. On Aug.
12, 1960, he married Nancy Violet Anderson, who preceded him in death.
On June 24, 1973, he married Donna L. Peters Miller, who survives at
home. He was a 1957 graduate of Lycoming College and a graduate of
Chicago College of Osteopathy. In 1951, he was discharged from the Navy
Reserves and from 1951-54, he served as a corporal with the Army during
the Korean War. >From 1962 until his retirement in 1994, he was a doctor
of osteopathy . He was a member of the Pennsylvania Osteopathic Medical
Association. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters,
Jennifer Swanger of Heston and Kimberly Frazier and Lori Ashley, both of
Front Royal, Va.; three sons, Timothy and Randall Miller, both of
Huntingdon, and Matthew Kelce Jr. of Front Royal; a sister, Elaine Pinto
of Philipsburg; a brother, Donald Kelce of Philipsburg; and 15
grandchildren. A brother preceded him in death. A memorial service will
be held at a later date. 

George Clifford HANEY, 79, of 100 Quarry Road, Lewistown, died at 9:55
p.m. Thursday, March 22, 2001 at Lewistown Hospital. Born April 11, 1921
in Entricken, he was a son of the late George S. and Ethel Lillian
(Everhart) Haney. His wife, Beulah Mae (Hagans) Haney, whom he married
Oct. 1, 1966, survives. Also surviving are: children, Clifford C. Haney,
McConnellstown, Lester W. Haney, Mill Creek and Mrs. Robert (Carolyn)
Varner, Foustown; sisters, Elizabeth L. Miller, Anna M. Miller, Audrey
E. Miller and Dawn E. Snare, all of Williamsburg, and Sandy C. Norton,
Port Matilda; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by a brother, Neil Roger Haney, and by two sisters,
Rosemond Elaine Haney and June J. Wilson. He served in the United States
Navy. He was a truck driver for Faylor Middlecreek, having retired in
1983. He was a Methodist by faith. His funeral service will be held at 2
p.m. Monday at Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn Funeral Home, 200 N. Main St.,
Lewistown, with the Rev. Jacob T. Traxler officiating. Interment will be
in Mt. Rock Cemetery, Lewistown. 

George W. STEEL Sr., 61, of HCR 1, Calvin, died at 7:28 p.m. Thursday,
March 22, 2001, at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon. Born April
5, 1939, in Huntingdon, he was the son of the late George A. Steel and
Mary L. (Arnold) Steel, who survives at Meadowview Manor, McVeytown,
R.D. He was married to Linda V. Buckley Nov. 5, 1968, in Huntingdon.
Along with his mother and wife, Mr. Steel is survived by six children:
Rodney Steel and Dawn Steel, both of Mount Union; Mark Steel of Newton
Hamilton; Verna Yoder of Allensville; and George W. Steel Jr. and Samuel
R. Steel, both at home. There are seven grandchildren. Also surviving
are eight siblings: Sherwood "Sam" Steel and James Steel, both of
Chambersburg; Mearl Steel, David Steel and Ellen Wagner, all of
Mapleton; Ulaine Wilson, Mill Creek; Tammy Jo McClain, Star Route,
Huntingdon; and William Arnold, California. Two step-brothers, Earl
Steel and Dick Steel, and a step-sister, Peggy Steel, also survive. One
brother, Dennis Steel, is deceased. Mr. Steel was a member of Mapleton
Post No. 322, American Legion and the Trough Creek Sportsman's Club. He
was employed as a truck driver and later worked for PennDOT. Mr. Steel
was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m.
Sunday, March 25, at the Robert I. McClain Funeral Home, Cassville, with
the Rev. Janice Black officiating. Interment will be made in the Trough
Creek Valley Baptist Cemetery, Calvin, R.D. 

Richard Harold MORGAN, 44, of HCR 60, Orbisonia, died at 8:55 a.m.
Friday, March 23, 2001, at the Hershey Medical Center, Hershey. Born
July 17, 1956, in Huntingdon, he was the son of Fred and Lois (Krause)
Morgan. Surviving are his parents at HCR 60, Orbisonia, two brothers and
two sisters: Dale Morgan, HCR 60, Orbisonia; Fred Morgan Jr., Tyrone;
Cindy Brightbill, Orbisonia; and Carrie Varner, HCR 60, Orbisonia. One
brother, David Benjamin Morgan and a niece, Danielle Dawn Morgan, are
deceased. Nine nieces and nephews, seven grand-nieces and grand-nephews,
survive. Mr. Morgan was a member of the Valley Point Church of the
Brethren, HCR 60, Orbisonia, where he was a member of the church board
and the choir. A 1975 graduate of Southern Huntingdon County High
School, he received a bachelor of science degree in elementary education
from York College of Pennsylvania in 1980. In his earlier years, he was
a counselor at the Beacon Lodge Camp for the Blind in Newton Hamilton.
He also worked at the Overbrook School for the Deaf and Blind in
Philadelphia. In his teaching career, he worked at the Southern
Huntingdon County High School, Spring Farm Elementary and Shade Gap
Elementary schools. For the past three years, he was a Title I math
teacher for fifth graders at Trough Creek Elementary School. During the
summer, he worked at the East Broad Top Railroad. His hobbies included
gardening, antique car restoration, painting, singing and German
language studies. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, March
26, at the Martin R. Brown Funeral Home, Orbisonia, with the Rev. Lewis
Powell, the Rev. Liane Wagner and the Rev. Tim Miller officiating.
Interment will be made in the Shope Cemetery, HCR 60, Orbisonia. 

Vera Grace (Clark) STAPLETON, 91, a resident of Huntingdon Manor,
formerly of Mt. Vernon Ave., Smithfield Township, Huntingdon, died
Friday, March 23, 2001, at 3:50 p.m., at Huntingdon Manor. Born May 23,
1909, in Cromwell Township, she was the daughter of the late Walter
Jackson and Mary Iona (Chilcote) Clark. She married Wilbur Roland
Stapleton June 4, 1927 in Smithfield, with the Rev. O.B. Poulson
officiating. Mr. Stapleton preceded her in death Aug. 14, 1963.
Surviving are two daughters.and one son: Lois J. Kyper, Smithfield,
Huntingdon; John W. Stapleton, New Middletown, Ohio; and Eva G.
Stapleton, Huntingdon. There are seven grandchildren and three great-
grandchildren. One daughter, Nancy Dovenspike, who had resided in
Vintondale, and a great-grandchild, preceded her in death. One brother
and a sister, Eva Happle of Orbisonia and Robert C. Clark of Huntingdon,
R.D., survive. Five brothers and one sister are deceased: Forest Clark,
Miles Clark, Norman Clark, Ruth Clark, Howard Clark and Walter F. Clark,
who died in infancy. Mrs. Stapleton was a member of St. James
Evangelical Lutheran Church, Huntingdon. She was a lifetime member of
the Standing Stone Senior Citizens; was a member of the Mead Retirees
Association and the Local 1040. For three years, she was employed as a
weaver with the Huntingdon Silk Mill and later worked at the J.C. Blair
Company and Mead Products for 33 years, retiring in 1974. She attended
the Jefferson School in Pogue, in southern Huntingdon County. She had
been a resident of Huntingdon since 1924 and had lived at her Smithfield
Township home from 1925 until 1999. A funeral service will be held
Monday, March 26, at 2 p.m. at the John B. Brown Funeral Home,
Huntingdon, with the Rev. Dr. Keith Dovenspike, Mrs. Stapleton's
son-in-law, officiating. Interment will be made in the Trough Creek
Baptist Cemetery, Cass Township, Huntingdon County. 

Robert C. GOODMAN, 76, of 27 E. Market St., Mount Union, died at 6:30
p.m. Friday, March 23, 2001, at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital,
Huntingdon. His death was unexpected Born Oct. 3, 1924, in Mount Union,
he was the son of the late David C. and Ethel (Kyper) Goodman. He
married Elizabeth Smyers June 19, 1948, at the Presbyterian Church in
Mount Union, with the Rev. Samuel Thackaberry conducting the ceremony.
Mrs. Goodman survives at home, along with three sons: Robert D. Goodman,
Michael C. Goodman and Timothy F. Goodman, all of Mount Union. There are
six grandchildren. One brother, David K. Goodman Sr. of Huntingdon,
survives. A cousin reared in the home, Mary Jane Leibfried, preceded him
in death. Mr. Goodman was a member of the Mount Union Presbyterian
Church, where he had served as a deacon, elder and trustee. For many
years, he was a Sunday school teacher for the men's class, was a lay
speaker and served on various church committees and offices. A 1941
graduate of Mount Union High School, he attended Juniata College before
entering the U.S. Navy during World War II. He served on the USS Cowpens
aircraft carrier in the Pacific Fleet. Following his honorable
discharge, he entered and graduated from Duff's Business College in
Pittsburgh. In 1948, he joined his father and brother at D.C. Goodman
and Sons in Mount Union and remained there until its closing in 1985. He
then became a Mount Union tax collector, an office he held for 12 years,
until his formal retirement in 1997. He was a member and past president
of the Mount Union Borough Council; an honorary member of the Mount
Union Volunteer Fire Company; a cubmaster for Pack 76 in Mount Union; a
member of the Mount Union Area Historical Society; life member of VFW
Post No. 5754, Mount Union; member of American Legion Post No. 107,
Mount Union; and was instrumental in the formation and organization of
the Mount Union Area Alumni Association. He was responsible for the
design and construction of the Mount Union Youth Baseball Park and
served as the organization's president for many years. Mr. Goodman was
also secretary and treasurer for the Big Band Sound, where he also
played the saxophone for over 20 years. His musical talents were widely
known, especially his love for transcribing music arrangements for
others and for his own personal enjoyment. In the past, he had been
involved in musical workshops and readings at the Mount Union Area
elementary schools. He served as master of ceremonies for many community
events and will be fondly remembered for his comedic portrayal of "Billy
Bob." Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 27, at the
Mount Union Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Carol Barrett
officiating. Interment will be made in the Mount Union Cemetery. 

Donald R. STOUT, 84, of Three Springs, R.D. 1, died at 8:25 a.m. Sunday,
March 25, 2001, at the Woodland Retirement Center, Orbisonia. Born Jan.
25, 1917, in Altoona, he was a son of the late Robert W. and Verna
(Mountain) Stout. He was married to Dorothy Mae Gilmore Aug. 30, 1957,
in Alexandria, Va. Mrs. Stout survives at home, along with six children:
William R. Stout, Warminster; John E. Stout, New Berlinville; Donald M.
Stout, Langhom; Maureen Toal, Shillington; and Carol Ann Aufiero and
Margaret "Peggy" Ierovante, both of Cape May, N.J. There are ten
grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Three siblings survive:
Robert Stout, Philadelphia; Jean Gresko, Illinois; and Joan Baker,
Philadel- phia. Mr. Stout attended the Fairview Evangelical Church,
Three Springs, R.D. He was a life member of the Fleet Reserve
Association and a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, Valley
Forge Chapter; Williamson-Corinthian Lodge No. 368, F&AM, Philadelphia;
Valley of Trenton Consistory, LuLu Temple AAONMS, Plymouth Meeting; Blue
Juniata Post No. 5754, VFW, Mount Union; and National Association of
Retired Federal Employees. Mr. Stout retired in 1958, from the U.S.
Navy, after 22 1/2 years of service, receiving the Commendation Ribbon
during World War II. He was later employed at the Philadelphia Naval
Yard as an inspector for eight and one-half years, and at the Bureau of
Employment Security in Altoona for three years. Funeral services will be
held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 27, at the Martin R. Brown Funeral Home,
Orbisonia. Interment will be made in the Fairview Cemetery, Three
Springs, R.D. 

Orpha C. STEVER, 91, formerly of HCR 02, Cassville, died at 10:05 a. m.,
Sunday, March 25, 2001 at Valley View Haven Nursing Home, Belleville,
where she had resided for the past 4 1/2 years. Born Oct. 23, 1909. in
Union Township, Huntingdon County, she was a daughter of the late John
M. and Elsie J. (Pheasant) Mansberger. Her husband Fred M. Stever, whom
she married Feb. 22, 1934, died Dec. 27, 1969. Surviving are: children,
John M. Stever, Springfield, Mo., Fred M. Stever, Cassville, H. Ray
Stever, Dillsburg and Sarah Jane Marks, Mifflintown RR1; a sister, Cora
David, Cassville; 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was
preceded in death by a brother, Samuel P. Mansberger and a sister, Anna
McHenry. She was a homemaker and was employed at the former Holiday Inn,
Huntingdon, at one time, and during her later years she worked as a
caregiver for the elderly. She was a member of Harmony Church of God,
Calvin RR, where she served as church pianist for many years. Services
will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, at the Robert I. McClain Funeral Home,
Cassville. Interment will be in Trough Creek Valley Baptist Cemetery,
Calvin RR. 

James Herbert BOWMAN, 82, a resident of the Shirley Home for the Aged,
Shirleysburg, formerly of Three Springs, died at 7:05 a.m. Saturday,
March 24, 2001, at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon. Born May
27, 1918, in Cass Township, Huntingdon County, he was the son of the
late Clem and Ida (Parks) Bowman. He was married to Velda D. Fields Aug.
2, 1969, in Three Springs. Mrs. Bowman preceded him in death Jan. 11,
1980. Three sisters and one brother survive: Mary States,
McConnellstown; Sara Bousum, Mapleton; Martha Witters, Philipsburg; and
Alex Bowman, West Easton. Two brothers and one sister are deceased. Mr.
Bowman was a member of the Cornelius Chapel United Methodist Church,
Mapleton, R.D. He had worked as a farmer and as a maintenance worker for
Orbisonia Borough. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday,
March 28, at the Martin R. Brown Funeral Home, Orbisonia, with the Rev.
David Ford officiating. Interment will be made in the Cherry Grove
Cemetery, Three Springs, R.D. 

Henry Raymond RANKIN, 76, of Shirleysburg and St. Cloud, Fla., died
Thursday, March 22, 2001, in the Sun Coast Hospital, Largo, Fla. Born
Jan. 5, 1925, in Elizabethtown, he was the son of the late Luther and
Thelma (Good) Rankin. The widower of Roberta Nicholson Rankin, he is
survived by three daughters and a son: Judith A. Wilson of Newport;
Linda J. Hurley of Seminole, Fla.; Patricia R. Phillipy of Camp Hill;
and James L. Rankin of Allentown. There are ten grand children and 11
great-grandchildren. Two sisters, May L. Hoffman and Margie E. Arehart,
both of Harrisburg, survive. Mr. Rankin was a retired systems analyst
for the Bethlehem Steel Corp. He also retired as chief warrant officer 4
from the Army Reserve and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He
was a Purple Heart recipient. He was a life member of his local American
Legion and VFW posts. Funeral services will beheld at Neill Funeral
Home, 3501 Derry St., Harrisburg. Interment will be made in the
Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. 

Paul Fredrick WHITESEL, 67, of Sunrise Acres, P.O. Box 8, Mill Creek,
died Friday, March 23, 2001, at 3:55 p.m., at the James E. Van-Zandt VA
Medical Center, Altoona. He had been in failing health for the last few
years. Born April 1, 1933, in Huntingdon, he was the son of the late
Allison and Agnes Bar (Ross) Whitesel. He married Barbara Joy Querry
March 23, 1953, in Huntingdon. Mrs. Whitesel survives at home, along
with three sons and two daughters: Robert Lee Whitesel, Grove, Texas;
Fredrick M. Whitesel, New Port Richey, Fla.; Mrs. Marshall (Debra
Whitesel) Garlock, Huntingdon; Ronald A. Whitesel, Huntingdon; and Mrs.
Louis (Sandra Whitesel) Groom, Lakeland, Fla. There are five
grandchildren and five great-granchildren. Two brothers and one sister
survive: Alverta Hunter, Clarence, Mo.; Amos Whitesel, Mill Creek; and
Theodore Whitesel, Snyder County. Several brothers and sisters preceded
him in death. Mr. Whitesel was of the Protestant faith. For a number of
years he was employed by Owens Coming Fiberglas at its Huntingdon, Mount
Union and Florida plants. He retired in 1989 and was briefly employed by
the Griffith Oil Company. Mr. Whitesel attended the Huntingdon public
schools and obtained his GED and associate degrees through the U.S. Air
Force. He retired from the Air Force in 1974, after 23 years of service
as a technical sergeant, serving during the Korean and Vietnam wars. A
lifetime resident of Huntingdon County, he had lived at his Mill Creek
residence since 1977. He enjoyed hunting. Full military honors will be
accorded at the graveside committal service Tuesday, March 27. A funeral
service will be held at the John B. Brown Funeral Home, Huntingdon,
Tuesday, March 27, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Georgetta "Cookie" Hartley
and the Rev. William H. Hartley officiating. Interment will be made in
the Huntingdon Memorial Gardens, Huntingdon. 

Charlotte G. QUERRY, 82, of 605 DeForrest Apartments, Huntingdon, died
Monday, March 26, 2001, at 10:30 a.m., at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital,
Huntingdon. Born Oct. 15, 1918, in Mount Union, she was the daughter of
the late Leroy and Nellie (Bowman) Null. She is survived by three
children: Pauline M. Johnston, Hesston, R.D. 1; Edie C. Osuna,
Pleasanton, Calif.; and Herbert D. "Dave" Vadden, Frederick, Md. There
are eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Two sisters and a
brother survive: Estella Anderson, Huntingdon; Mary Lou Ward,
Huntsville, Ala.; and Harrison Null, Greencastle, Ind. She was preceded
in death by two sisters and a brother: Viola Null, Devona Null and
Philip Null. Mrs. Querry was of the Methodist faith. She worked as a
seamstress at the Arrow Shirt Factory in Huntingdon for 15 years, prior
to her retirement. She was a dollmaker who also enjoyed quilting,
embroidery and gardening. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March
28, at 2 p.m., at the Robert E. Peters Funeral Home, Huntingdon, with
the Rev. James L. Blair officiating. Interment will be made in the Mount
Union Cemetery, Mount Union. 

Lorma Catherine McCONAUGHEY, 75, of Mount Union, died at 4:15 p.m.
Sunday, March 25, 2001, at the home of her daughter, Carol Carlin, of
Shirleysburg, R.D. 1. Born July 16, 1925, in Shirley Township,
Huntingdon County, she was.the daughter of the late David E. and Nora
Josephine (Kelley) Worthy. She was married to George Henry McConaughey
Sr. Jan. 29, 1946. Mr. McConaughey preceded her in death May 8, 1970.
Mrs. McConaughey is survived by her companion of 26 years, John 0. Laird
of Water Street, Mount Union. One son and four daughters survive: Carol
L. Carlin, Shirleysburg; George H. McConaughey Jr., Mount Union; Debbie
J. Kibe, Milroy; Mary C. Goss, Mount Union; and Bonnie S. Morton, Newton
Hamilton. There are 12 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, five
step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren. Two grandsons,
Seth Morton and Bradley Kibe II, preceded her in death. The last
surviving member of her immediate family, she was preceded in death by
11 siblings: Ruth Varner, Bernice Boozel, Ethel Marks, Harvey Worthy,
Sherman Worthy, Banks Worthy, Ruth Long, Marshall Bollinger, Esther
Kelley, Melvin Worthy and Lena Hammon. Mrs. McConaughey was of the
Protestant faith. In her earlier years, she had worked at Letterkenny
Army Depot in Chambersburg and at the former Owens-Corning Fiberglas,
Huntingdon. She then worked at Robin Footwear in Mount Union for many
years. Her last employment was at Empire Kosher in Mifflintown. She was
also a homemaker. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday,
March 28, at the Martin R. Brown Funeral Home, Orbisonia, with the Rev.
Dayton Sines officiating. Interment will be made in the Haven Rest
Memorial Park, Shirlevsburg, R.D. 

Neil G. STUCK, 58, of 3982 E. Main St., Belleville, died at 10:26 p.m.
Sunday, March 25, 2001, in the emergency room of Lewistown Hospital.
Born March 19, 1943, in Belleville, he was a son of the late Rush G. and
A. Mildred (Crownover) Stuck. His wife, Carol A. (Wilson) Stuck, whom he
married July 11, 1964, survives. Also surviving are: children, Mrs.
Stephen (Beth) Treaster, Belleville, Mrs. Richard (Wende) Glenny,
Huntingdon RR2 and Cathy J. Stuck, at home; brothers and sisters, Thelma
Byler, Rush G. Stuck Jr., Glen P. Stuck and Dean G. Stuck, all of
Belleville, and Kenn G. Stuck, Milroy; and five grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by a son, Michael L. Stuck on Jan. 3, 1965, and by an
infant sister. He worked for 30 years as a roofer at J.M. Young and Sons
in Belleville, and was recently working for Peachey Foods in Belleville.
He was a social member of the Stroup Alexander VFW Post 5935,
Belleville, and a member of the National Rifle Association. He was an
avid hunter, fisherman and gardener. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m.
Thursday at the Donald E. Baggus Funeral Home, 3813 W. Main St.,
Belleville, with the Rev. Harold Sharp officiating. Interment will be in
Machpelah Cemetery, Belleville. 

Madaline (Haulinan) Wilson MONIHEN, 89, of Largo, Fla., died at 11:45
a.m. Sunday, March 25, 2001. Born May 15, 1911, in Martinsburg, W.Va.,
she was the daughter of the late Clyde and Gertrude (Jacobs) Kaufman.
She was united in marriage to Ray S. Wilson Sr. Aug. 29, 1931. He
preceded her in death May 28, 1962. She later married Harper Monihen
April 13, 1968. Mr. Monihen died Sept. 21, 1970. One son, Ray S. Wilson
of Seminole, Fla., survives, along with three grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren. One brother, Austin Haulman of Panama City, Fla.,
and two sisters, Joyce McMahon of Huntingdon and Gertrude Lott of
Mooresville, survive. One brother, Barrett, and a sister, Esther Kling,
preceded her in death. Mrs. Monihen was a member of the
Petersburg-Bethel Presbyterian Church for 70 years. She was employed by
Owens-Corning Fiberglas in Huntingdon for more than 30 years, until her
retirement to Florida. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of
the National Cremation Society of Clearwater. Fla. 

George Frederick SCHELL, 86, of R.D. 3, Box 31, Walker Township,
Huntingdon, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at 6 a.m., at HealthSouth
Rehabilitation Hospital, Altoona. Born May 29, 1914, in Hesston, he was
the son of the late Frederick Morrow and Elizabeth B. (Hoover) Schell.
He manied Betty Louise States Nov. 22, 1944, at the Evangelical and
Reformed Church Parsonage in Marklesburg, with the Rev. Charles A.
Huyette officiating. Mrs. Schell survives at their Walker Township
residence, along with a daughter, Sandy D. Varner of McConnellstown, and
a son, Greg W. Varner of James Creek. Two sisters, Lilie Marie Smith and
Chloe B. Cressman, preceded him in death. Mr. Schell was blinded when he
was 13 years old. He maintained a positive attitude and had various jobs
with the assistance of his nephews and wife. He had been a former
employee of The Daily News in the delivery department. Mr. Schell had
resided at Aitch prior to the construction of Raystown Lake and has been
at his Walker Township home for the past 30 years. Funeral services will
be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 30, at the Cutright-Speck Funeral Home,
207 Ridge Rd., Smithfield, Huntingdon, with the Rev. Dr. Ruth Ann
Campagna officiating. Interment will be made in the Old Stone Church
Cemetery, James Creek. 

Ethel Marie Jones Tilmon POLK, 54, of W. Deptford, N.J., died Sunday,
March 25, 2001. Bom July 7, 1946, in Chicago, Ill., she was the daughter
of the late David and Loretta Strong. She is survived by her husband,
Charles C. Polk, and two children: Brian K. Jones of W. Deptford, N.J.,
and Elizabeth A. Tilmon of Woodbury, N.J. There is one granddaughter.
Four siblings survive: Mildred Tilmon, W. Deptford, N.J.; Larry Young,
Judy Strong and Alfred Nelson, all of Chicago, Ill. Mrs. Polk was a
graduate of Juniata College and began her teaching career in the
Huntingdon area. She taught for more than 30 years. Funeral services
will be held Friday, March 30, at 11 a.m., at the Bethel AME Church,
Berkley Rd. and Swedesboro Ave., Paulsboro, N.J. Interment will be made
in the Englington Cemetery, Clarksboro, N.J. 

Frank J. DERACLEA, 74, of R.D. 3, Box 331C, Huntingdon, formerly of
Harrisburg, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at 7:02 a.m., at J.C. Blair
Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon. Born June 15, 1926, in Steelton, he was a
son of the late Venchencio and Michelina Deraclea. He married Pearl
Greene June 2, 1981, in Harrisburg. Mrs. Deraclea survives at home,
along with one son and two daughters: Joseph Deraclea, Enola; Mrs. Diane
(Deraclea) Mallilieu, East Stroudsburg; and Mrs. Sharon (Deraclea)
Stevens, Lancaster. There are four grandchildren and several nieces and
nephews. One sister, Elsie (Deraclea) Acri of Phoenix, Ariz., survives.
He was preceded in death by a sister and three brothers: Hilda
(Deraclea) Haas, Charles Deraclea, Joseph Deraclea and Larry Deraclea.
Mr. Deraclea was of the Protestant faith. He retired in 1973 from P.A. &
S. Small (S.M. Flickenger), as a meat department supervisor. Educated in
the Harrisburg public schools, he had been a resident of Huntingdon
County for 18 years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, walking, woodcrafts,
reading and traveling. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday
March 30, at the John B. Brown Funeral Home, Huntingdon, with the Rev.
Ronald S. Weigel, Mr. Deraclea's nephew, officiating. Interment will be
made in the Mt. Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery, Huntingdon, R.D. 3. 

Joseph T. RIPPLE, 48, of 131 Figard St., Saxton, died Tuesday, March 27,
2001. His death was unexpected. Born April 10, 1952, in Huntingdon, he
was the son of the late Charles T. "Pete" and Alma G. (Luther) Ripple.
He married Joni Mack at the First Chuivh of God in Saxton Sept. 1, 1994.
Surviving, aimg with Mrs. Ripple, are two children: Courtney Ripple of
Hopewell, R.D., and Brianne Wills of Saxton. Three sisters survive: Mrs.
Daniel (Charlene) Bennett, Clearville, R.D.; Mrs. Craig (Virginia
"Ginger") Bedford, Terre Haute, Ind.; and Mrs. Robert (Dolores) Adams,
Martinsburg, W.Va. An infant brother, Charles, is deceased. Mr. Ripple
was a member of the First Church of God, Saxton. He was employed by
Saxton Bottling and most recently by Seton Corp. Funeral services will
be held Friday, March 30, at 1 p.m., at the D. Ronald Long Funeral
Chapel, Saxton, with Pastor John Robinson officiating. Interment will be
made in the Grandview Cemetery, Saxton. 

Ray E. BOYD, 66, of 4 N. Washington St., Shippensburg, died Tuesday,
March 27, 2001, at his son's home at 8 Remington Dr., Shade Gap. Born
Sept. 20, 1934, in Gerrardstown, W.Va., he was the son of the late
Clifford F. and Lucy Jane (McMillan) Boyd. He is survived by a son and
two daughters: Kenneth E. Boyd Sr., Shade Gap; Mrs. John (Tonia D.)
Fischer, Las Vegas, Nev.; and Terri R. Peck, Three Springs. There are
six grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and four
step-great-grandchildren. Three brothers and two sisters survive: Robert
L. Boyd, Fayetteville; Adrian L. Boyd, Lurgan; Gary C. Boyd, Nyesville;
Marie Hancock, Prince, Utah; and Mrs. John (Linda L.) Eyer, Orrstown. A
number of nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by
one brother. Mr. Boyd was a retired truck driver for Valley Quarries in
Shippensburg and was a U.S. Army Veteran. He was vice president of the
Minnequa Social Club; a member of the Oscar M. Hykes American Legion
Post No. 223; Durff-Kuhn VFW Post No. 6168; and the Hub City Club, all
in Shippensburg. He also belonged to the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge
No. 842, Chambersburg. Funeral services will be held in the
Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, Inc., Shippensburg, Saturday, March
31, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Thomas R. Williamson officiating. Interment
will be made at the convenience of the family. 

Walter J. "Pap" GALLAGHER, 95, a resident of The Oaks at Westminster
Woods, Huntingdon, formerly of 1512 Washington St., Huntingdon, died
Thursday, March 29, 2001, at 7:25 a.m., at The Oaks at Westminster
Woods. Born Dec. 16, 1905, in Coalport, Clearfield County, he was the
son of the late Ord Allen and Mary (Ensbrenner) Gallagher. He married
Edith Bowman Oct. 4, 1926, in Cumberland, Md. She preceded him in death
Sept. 17, 1965. Surviving is a daughter, Mary Ann Corbin of Huntingdon,
along with three grandchildren, six great- grandchildren and five
great-great- grandchildren. The last surviving member of his immediate
family, he was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters:
Alfred Gallagher, Frank Gallagher, Fred Gallagher, Gilbert Gallagher,
Delbert Gallagher, Agatha Gallagher, Emma (Gallagher) Campbell and an
infant sister. Mr. Gallagher was a member of the Most Holy Trinity
Catholic Church, Huntingdon. Educated in the Huntingdon public schools,
he retired as a foreman from L.C. Anderson and Sons, Inc., in 1974.
Prior to that, he worked as a steamfitter in New Jersey. He had been,a
longtime resident of Huntingdon County and had lived at his Washington
Street residence since the 1940s. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed
fishing, hunting and walking. He also enjoyed reading and baseball. A
funeral Mass will be held at the Most Holy Trinity Church, Sixth and
Washington streets, Huntingdon, Saturday, March 31, at 11 a.m., with the
Rev. David J. Arseneault officiating. Interment will be made in the
Riverview Cemetery, Huntingdon. 

Kathryn L. LOGUE, 89, a resident of Manor Care Nursing Home, Camp Hill,
formerly of 15 West Fourth St., Lewistown, died at 1:20 a.m. Tuesday,
March 20, 2001, at the nursing home. Born April 6, 1911, in Ryde, she
was the daughter of the late Nevin S. and Hulda (Hall) Love. Her
husband, Clyde, died in 1984. She is survived by a son, Richard of
Lewistown, and a daughter, Mrs. Jeffery (Susan) Kisner of Shirmanstown,
and five grandchildren. Also surviving are four sisters, Hazel Heider,
Burnham; Ruth Pollock, Washington, D.C.; Betty Love, Shirleysburg, R.D.;
and Maxine Raffensberger, Elizabethtown. She was preceded in death by
four bothers and four sisters. Mrs. Logue was a member of the Lewistown
Church of the Brethren. She was a homemaker and, earlier in her life,
she was employed by American Viscose in Lewistown. Services were private
and held at the convenience of the family. Interment was made in St.
Mark's Cemetery in Lewistown. 

C. Eleanor MYERS, 91, formerly of McConnellstown and Huntingdon, died
Thursday, March 29, 2001, at 5:25 a.m., at the Morrisons Cove Home in
Martinsburg. Born June 19, 1909, in Hesston, she was the daughter of the
late Frank and Anna Agnes (Brumbaugh) Myers. The last surviving member
of her immediate family, she was preceded in death by a brother, Wilmer
B. Myers, and a sister, Dorothy Mae Beachy. Three nieces and a nephew
survive. Miss Myers was a member of James Creek Church of the Brethren.
She was a member of the McConnellstown Fire Company Auxiliary, Standing
Stone Senior Citizens and the auxiliary of the Morrisons Cove Home.
Self-employed as a seamstress, she had also worked as a personal care
attendant in the Huntingdon, Alexandria and Hesston areas. She had
attended the Blue Ridge College Academy in Maryland. Funeral services
will be held Saturday, March 31, at 2 p.m., at the Robert E. Peters
Funeral Home, Huntingdon, with the Rev. Wilbert Banks officiating.
Interment will be made in the Valley View Cemetery, James Creek, R.D. 1.

Agnes K. GLUNT, 85, of 206 Grist Mill Rd., Burnt Cabins, died March 29,
2001, at the Fulton County Medical Center. Born Sept. 28, 1915, in Burnt
Cabins, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Pearl (Ritchey)
Kearns. She married Paul E. Glunt June 17, 1930. He preceded her in
death Sept. 27, 1999. Surviving are two sons and two daughters: Richard
Glunt of Fort Littleton; Glendall Glunt of Zephyrhills, Fla.; Leona
Devlin, ,Shade Gap; and Georgia Ross, Burnt Cabins. There are 12
grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
One grandson is deceased. Three sisters survive: Ida Belle Boggs,
Fannettsburg; Rena Wilson, York; and Mary Varner, Shade Gap. One brother
and three sisters preceded her in death. Mrs. Glunt retired from Sagner
in McConnellsburg, where she was a seamstress. After her retirement, she
owned and operated an assisted care living facility. She was a member of
the Burnt Cabins Presbyterian Church, the Burnt Cabins Civic Association
and the Burnt Cabins Historical Society. Funeral services will be held
Monday, April 2, at 2 p.m., at the Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home, Inc.,
322 N. Second St., McConnellsburg, with the Rev. Ted Hale officiating.
Interment will be made in the Burnt Cabins Cemetery. 

Robert A. "Buck" HELSEL III, 62, of Riddlesburg, died at 2:50 a.m.
Friday, March 30, 2001, at Altoona Hospital, Altoona. He was born Sept.
30, 1938, in Langdondale, the son of the late Robert A. and Evelyn
(Putt) Helsel, Jr. He married A. June Trysnicky Dec. 17, 1960, in
Norristown. He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Peg Singer of
White Church and Lisa Smith of Bedford, and two sons, Bob Helsel of
Clearville and Ken Helsel of Hopewell. He is also survived by four
sisters: Audrey Gates of Saxton, Bonnie Matiga of Bridgeport, Kathy
Cassner of Collegeville and Joan Moffat of Saxton, and two brothers:
Bill Helsel of Bridgeport and Daniel Helsel of Collegeville. His
step-mother, Gay Helsel of West Virginia and three grandchildren also
survive. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Helsel and
Margaret Hockenbrock, and a brother, Ken Helsel. Mr. Helsel was a
veteran of the Korean War, serving as a private in the U.S. Air Force.
During his life, he worked as a truck driver at Selco for six years.
Prior to his work at Selco, he worked 18 years as a sawyer for Dodson
Brothers. He was a member of the Saxton Sportsman Association, the
Saxton V.F.W. and the Broad Top American Legion. He enjoyed hunting,
fishing, driving truck. He was also a former race car driver. A funeral
service will be held Tuesday, April 3, at 2 p.m., at the Curtis A. Heath
Funeral Home, Broad Top, with Pastor Denny Troutman officiating.
Interment will be made at Langdondale Cemetery in Langdondale. 

Gilbert L. BARTO, 100, of 2444 W. Gatesburg Rd. Warriors Mark, died
Friday, March 30, 2001, at his residence. Born June 11, 1900, in
Marengo, he was the son of the late John Henry and Anne (Masterson)
Barto. He is survived by seven children: Gail Dugan, State College;
Eddie R. Barto, Warriors Mark, R.D.; Anna Vivian Swortwood, Lamar;
Donald C. Barto, Quakertown; Merrill L. Barto, Warriors Mark, R.D.;
Joyce E. Fink, Sinking Valley; and Leona F. Smith, Warriors Mark, R.D.
There are 23 grandchildren, numerous great- and
great-great-grandchildren. Two sisters, Gladys Fry of Warriors Mark and
Roxie Collins of Utah, survive. He was preceded in death by two sisters
and a brother. Mr. Barto was a member of the Ross United Methodist
Church for over 60 years. He had been a lifelong farmer in the Gatesburg
area. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the
family, with Pastor Sharon Ludrowsky officiating. Interment will be made
in the Ross Cemetery. 

Alberta Mae CAROLUS, 87, a resident of Huntingdon Manor, formerly of
Barree Road, Alexandria, R.D. 1, died Saturday, March 31, 2001, at 1
a.m., at Huntingdon Manor, Huntingdon. Born Dec. 25, 1913, in Barree,
she was reared by her aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Keith. She
married John Wesley Carolus May 16, 1933, in Petersburg. He preceded her
in death ]an. 13, 1966. Surviving are five children: James W. Carolus,
Huntingdon; Robert J. Carolus, Petersburg; Mrs. Kermit (Laura A.)
Patterson, Huntingdon; Harvey B. Carolus, Alexandria; and Roberta R.
Port, Huntingdon. There are 17 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren and
one great-great-grandchild. One sister, Betty Graham of Altoona,
survives. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Marjorie J. Danielak
Oct. 19, 1999. One brother and a granddaughter are deceased. Mrs.
Carolus was primarily a homemaker. For a number of years she had been
employed by K-Mart in the yard goods department. She retired in 1968.
She was a member of the Barree United Methodist Church, where she had
been the pianist for a number of years. Mrs. Carolus was also active
with the Juniata Valley Senior Citizens, where she enjoyed cooking,
bingo and playing the piano. She attended the Alexandria public schools
and had been a long-time resident of the Juniata Valley prior to moving
to Huntingdon Manor May 31, 1996. Funeral services will be held at 11
a.m. Thursday, April 5, at the Cutright-Speck Funeral Home, Juniata
Valley Chapel, 412 Main St., Alexandria, with the Rev. Sharon Landis
officiating. Interment will be made in the Mooresville Cemetery. 

Shirley K. TEETERS, 70, of Grazierville, Tyrone, R.D. 4, died Saturday,
March 31, 2001, at her home. Born Jan. 3, 1931, in Altoona, she was a
daughter of the late Rev. Elmer and Hazel (Stonebraker) Hosband. She
married Andrew S. Teeters Jr. Oct. 1, 1955. Surviving along with her
husband are four daughters and three sons: Edna Breon, Shirley Boger,
Patricia Miller, Joanne Miller, Andrew Teeters III, Benjamin Teeters and
Richard Teeters, all of Grazierville. There are 17 grandchildren and 21
great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a sister, Jane Snyder of Tyrone
and a brother, Robert Hosband of Altoona. Mrs. Teeters was formerly
employed at Big Yank in Tyrone, as a seamstress for 10 years. She had
also worked at the F&F Dry Cleaners in Tyrone. She attended the First
Assembly of God Church in Tyrone, where she sang in the choir. She loved
her children and grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Tuesday,
April 3, at 11 a.m., at the Feller Memorial Home, Tyrone, with the Rev.
William Glunt officiting. Interment will be made in the Alexandria
Presbyterian Cemetery.
