Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon. Born Jan. 1, 1931, in Cromwell Twp., Huntingdon County, he was the son of John F. and Louise B. (Runk) Whitsel, both deceased. He is survived by two sisters, Nellie Morgan of Shirleysburg, R.D. 1, and Sue Senn of State College. One brother, Ned John Whitsel, and an infant daughter preceded him in death. Mr. Whitsel was a member of the Sugar Run Church of the Brethren, Mount Union, R.D., where he had been a Sunday School teacher. He was a member and program leader of Alcoholics Anonymous for a number of years. He worked as an electronics technician, previously for Bendix Corp. and Philco. Mr. Whitsel was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, at the Martin R. Brown Funeral Home, Orbisonia, with the Rev. James Hullihen officiating. Interment will be made in the Monroe Valley Cemetery, Three Springs, R.D. Ann M. (Kowalczyk) JAROSICK, 85, of Quemahoning Street, Boswell, died Friday, March 1, 2002, at Select Specialty Hospital in Johnstown. Born July 26, 1916, in Ralphton, she was the daughter of John Sr. and Stephanie (Scislowicz) Kowalczyk, both deceased. She married Joseph Jarosick, who preceded her in death. She is survived by a son, Joseph J. Jarosick of Huntingdon; a daughter, Patricia A, Jarosick of Johnstown, and one granddaughter. She is also survived by one brother, John Kowalczyk Jr. of Boswell, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Gennuso and Josephine Saponsky, and five brothers, Walter, Matthew, Stanley and Michael Kowalczyk and her twin brother, Chester Kowalczyk. Mrs. Jarosick was a member of All Saints Catholic Parish in Boswell, where she was a member of the Ladies Sodality. She was a member of the 55 Speeders Senior Citizens, the Boswell Senior Citizens and the Boswell fire department's ladies auxiliary. During her life she was employed by the former Dorfman and Hoffman garment factory and enjoyed gardening and crocheting. A funeral Mass will be held at noon Monday, March 4, at All Saints Catholic Church, with the Rev. Martin Breski officiating. Interment will be made in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Boswell. LaFern William MILLER, 76, Three Springs, R.R. 1, died at 9:12 a.m. Friday, March 1, 2002, at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon. Born May 10, 1925, in Clay Twp. he was the son of the late Berlin W. and Edith C. (DeShong) Miller. He was married to Margaret "Peg" Dell on July 24, 1948. Mrs. Miller survives at their home. Also surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Donald (Panda) J. Horne, Fort Littleton: one son, William C. Miller, Gambrills, Md., one sister, Bernnie Cordell, Forest Hill, Md.; five grandchildren and one great-grandson. Two brothers preceded him in death. Mr. Miller was a member of the Immanuel Bible Church, Three Springs. He was a member of the Madden-Wennick Post 518, American Legion, Orbisonia. A veteran of World War II, Serving with the U.S. Army in the Philippines, he retired in 1970 from the Letterkenny Army Depot, Chambersburg, where he had worked as a mechanic. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Immanuel Bible Church, Three Springs, with the Rev. Steve Heaster officiating. Interment will be made in Cherry Grove Cemetery, Three Springs. Martin J. PONISH SR., 73, formerly of 1521 Washington Street, Huntingdon, died at 5:50 a.m. Friday, March 1, 2002, at Huntingdon Manor, Huntingdon. Born May 22, 1928, in Snowshoe, he was the son of the late Joseph and Frances (Smoko) Ponish. He was married to Dolly Wyland, Williamsburg, Sept, 6, 1952. She preceded him in death, along with an infant daughter, Virginia Lee, Aug. 7, 1959. The following children survive; Mrs Donald (Evelyn) Shope, Huntingdon; Martin J. Ponish Jr., Huntingdon; Teresa Rudolph, Huntingdon; Karen Sue Ponish, Huntingdon; and Cathy Solt, Lewistown; and nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three brothers, Joseph Ponish and John Ponish, both of Coalport and David Ponish, St. Marys; Two sisters, Helene Birch, San Antonio, Texas; and Mary Peacock, Coalport. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Steven Ponish; and one sister, Ann Jenkins. Mr. Ponish was employed by Asplundh Tree Service for forty years, retiring in 1991. He was an accomplished bowler and was an avid spots enthusiast, especially baseball and football. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, at the Robert E. Peters Funeral Home, Huntingdon, with the Rev. David Arseneault officiating. Interment will be in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Williamsburg, R.R. 2. John Henry BURKETT, 84, a resident of The Providence Place, Chambersburg, formerly of 10588 Letzburg Road, Greencastle, died at 2 a.m. Saturday, March 2, 2002, at Chambersburg Hospital. Mr. Burkett had been in failing health for the past several years and critically ill since Feb. 28. Born July 23, 1917, in Worleytown, he was the son of William Clinton and Anna (Witmer) Burkett, both deceased. He married Thelma M. Wolff May 23, 1936, in Hagerstown, Md. She preceded him in death June 23, 1983. He is survived by three daughters and three sons; Mary Jane Mellott, Mercersburg; Dorothy M. Sites, Marion; Barbara J. Klause, Orbisonia; John L. Burkett, Greencastle; Clinton E. Burkett, Chambersburg, and Walter R. Burkett, Upton, as well as 16 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one grandson and one great-granddaughter. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family, having been preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Lewis Burkett, an infant sister and an infant brother. Mr. Burkett was a member of the Macedonia United Brethren Church, Greencastle, where he was a member of the adult men's Sunday School class. He was also a member of the Needmore Burial Association of Fulton County. He lived his early life in Worleytown, where he attended the Sunrise School. He was employed in his early life at the Canning Factory in Greencastle and then as a machine assembler at Landis Tool Co., Waynesboro, before retiring on disability January 1970. He and his late wife moved to their Letzburg Road, Greencastle, address in 1940. Mr. Burkett entered The Providence Place May 2000. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, walking and was a great gardener. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 5, at the Macedonia United Brethren Church, 11887 Worleytown Road, Greencastle, with Pastor Gayle L. Ruble Sr. officiating. Interment will be made in the adjoining church cemetery. Violet L. (Detwiler) FESSLER, 77, of 128, Oberman St., Saxton, died at 4:07 p.m. Saturday, March 2, 2002, at Nason Hospital, Roaring Spring, following an extended illness. Born April 15, 1924, at Saxton, R.D., she was the daughter of Harrison D. and Elsie (Gillian) Detwiler, She married Robert J. Fessler July 8, 1945, in Saxton. She is survived by her husband, at home; one daughter, Mrs. Fred (Patty) Heath of Saxton; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. One brother and two sisters survive; Albert B. Detwiler of Rochester, Pa., Mary Heath of Saxton and Hester Dickinson of Johnstown. She was preceded in death by one son, Robert Fessler, and three brothers, John, Elmer and William Detwiler. Mrs. Fessler was a member of the Church of God Tabernacle, Saxton. She was a 1942 graduate of Saxton-Liberty High School and was primarily a homemaker. She enjoyed flower gardens. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, at the D. Ronald Long Funeral Chapel, Saxton, with Pastor Lanny Hoover officiating. Interment will be made in Grandview Cemetery, Saxton, R.D. Angelina (Territo) SANTINI, 86, of 21 Alabama Ave., Paterson, N.J., died Sunday, March 3, 2002. Born May 31, 1915, in Robertsdale, Huntingdon County, she was the daughter of Charlie and Angeline (Saia) Territo, both deceased. She was united in marriage to Matteo Santini Aug. 28, 1938, at St. Anthony Roman Catholic Church, Paterson, N.J. He preceded her in death. She is survived by a brother, James Territo of Robertsdale, and two sisters, Mrs. John (Ida) Diak and Mrs. Samuel (Rosie) Ristone, both of Paterson, N.J., as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Guy, Louie, Charlie and Richard Territo, and three sisters, Mrs. Carmen (Jean) Incorvaia, Mrs. Emauuel (Mary) Arturi and Mrs. Kenneth (Josephine) Perry. Mrs. Pavone was of the Catholic faith and a parishioner of St. George Roman Catholic Church in Paterson, N.J. She was a member of the Columbiettes of the Knights of Columbus Council 240 of St. George Catholic Church. She moved to Paterson, N.J., when she was 16 years of and was a cosmetologist and homemaker. Funeral services were held Thursday, March 7, at St. George Roman Catholic Church. Interment was made in Calvary Mausoleum, Paterson, N.J. Frank L. MANSBARGER, 95, of Littlestown, formerly of Saxton, died early Sunday, March 3, 2002, at the Gettysburg Lutheran Home. He was born May 10, 1906, in Huntingdon County, the son of the late James and Elsie Mansbarger. He married Leola Hamilton, who preceded him in death in 1950. He is survived by a daughter, Connie L. Haak of Hanover, nine grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Jacquelyn Smith. During his life, Mr. Mansbarger worked as a coal miner. He lived in Littlestown with his daughter, Connie Haak, who has since moved to Hanover. A memorial service for Mr. Mansbarger will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, New Oxford, at 6:30 p.m. Friday, March 8, with Bishop David Cook officiating. Interment will be made in Saltillo Cemetery at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 9. Helen M. (Lewis) CLUTTER, 80, of 23 Monnie Jones Rd., Weaverville, N.C., died at 12:08 p.m. Sunday, March 3, 2002, at Bon Secours Holy Family Regional Health System, Altoona, following a brief illness. Born March 19, 1921, in Burnsville N.C., she was the daughter of Floyd and May (Honeycutt) Hensley, both deceased. She was twice married, to Roscoe Lewis and Bernie Clutter, who both preceded her in death. She is survived by three daughters and one son; Mary Ball of Weaverville, N.C.; Linda Jenkins of Asheville, N.C.; Geraldine Littrell of Candlar, N.C., and Clifton Lewis of Ithaca N.Y., as well as 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Margaret Edwards of Hopewell. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Goff. Mrs. Clutter was of the Baptist faith. She was retired from the Chester County Hospital, West Chester, after 20 years of service in the laundry department. she enjoyed singing and dancing. A memorial service in remembrance of Mrs. Clutter will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 6, at the D. Ronald Long Funeral Chapel in Saxton, with Pastor John Miller officiating. Harold E. "Bud" MCNEAL, 75, of 1119 Washington St., Huntingdon, died at 3:40 p.m. Sunday, March 3, 2002, at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon, where he had been a patient since Feb. 21. Born July 7, 1926, in Johnstown, he was the son of Jesse and Lena (Berkstresser) McNeal, both deceased. He was united in marriage to Betty J. Myers April 19, 1957, in Huntingdon. He is survived by his wife, at home; three sons and one daughter; George A. Myers of Tenstrike, Minn., and Donald E. Myers, Lena Keller and Michael J. McNeal, all of Huntingdon. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A sister, Helen McNeal of Huntingdon, survives. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Lousie Bert, Jan. 7, 1953; a son, Dennis McNeal, May 7, 1961, and an infant brother, Steven McNeal, in 1929. Mr. McNeal attended the First United Methodist Church, Huntingdon. He was a life member of the Standing Stone VFW Post No. 1754, Huntingdon, having been active with the post since May 1969. He had been through the chairs of officers and served as commander on two different occasions, from 1989-1990 and 1995-1996. He also served on numerous committees and had held a seat on the board of directors. He was also a National VFW life member. Additionally, Mr. McNeal held memberships in the Frank P. Hommon American Legion Post No. 24, Huntingdon; the National Rifle Association; Telephone Pioneers of America and the Standing Stone Senior Citizens. He was reared in the home of his grandmother in Johnstown and moved to Todd Twp., Huntingdon County, when he was six years old. He left Huntingdon in 1940 to attend the Scotland School for Veterans Children, Scotland. Mr. McNeal graduated from the Scotland School for Veterans Children in 1944, and returned to Huntingdon. He entered service with the U.S Army Sept. 7, 1950, and was stationed on the island of Okinawa from January 1952 until August 1952, during the Korean Conflict. He served as a radio operator with C Battery 22nd AAA AW Battalion and received the AOM-Japan Medal. He was discharged from active duty Sept. 2, 1952, and served for a long number of years with the Pennsylvania Army National Guard. Mr. McNeal was employed by Telepower Construction Company and later Bell Telephone of Pennsylvania. He retired in 1989, after 33 years of service as a lineman and installer. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 7, at the Cutright-Speck Funeral Home, 207 Ridge Rd., Smithfield Twp., Huntingdon, with the Rev. Doyle H. Klinger Jr. officiating. Interment will be made in Riverview Cemetery. Hazel L. HEIDER, 88, of 210 Eighth Ave., Burnham, died at 7:07 p.m. Sunday, March 3, 2002, at Lewistown Hospital, Lewistown. Born Nov. 25, 1913, in Ryde, she was the daughter of Nevin and Hilda (Hall) Love, Both deceased. She married John S. Heider, who preceded her in death July 11, 1987. She is survived by three sisters, Ruth Pollick of Herndon, Va.; Betty J. Love of Shirleysburg and Maxine Raffensperger of Elizabethtown. She was preceded in death by four brothers and six sisters. Mrs. Heider was a member of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Roman Catholic Parish in Lewistown. She was employed in the cake converting department of American Viscose for 35 years, retiring in 1972. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 6, at Juniata Memorial Park in Lewistown, with the Rev. Thomas Marickovic officiating. There will be no public viewing. Marilyn (Bratton) KLINE, 77, of Lewisberry, formerly of Pine Grove Mills, died Monday, March 4, 2002, at Community General Osteopathic Hospital in Harrisburg. Born Sept. 23, 1924, in New Kingston, she was the daughter of Herbert and Alice (Corbin) Bratton, both deceased. She married Wayne J. Kline in 1946. He preceded her in death Jan. 21, 1998. She is survived by a daughter, Alice K. Hocker of Lewisberry; a son, Terry A. Kline of Reynoldsville; four grandchildren, two step-granddaughters and two step-great-granddaughters. She is also survived by a sister, Elenor J. Harris of State College. She was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister. Mrs. Kline was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Pine Grove Mills. She was a member of the women's auxiliary of the Pine Grove Mills VFW. She was a graduate of Huntingdon High School and worked as a telegraph operator for Western Union for 30 years. She enjoyed bowling, crafts and camping. Funeral services will be held at noon Thursday, March 7, at the Koch Funeral Home, 2401 S. Atherton St., State College, with the Rev. Robert A. Heydenreich II officiating. Interment will be made in Centre County Memorial Park. Maude E. FRY, 79, of Petersburg, R.R. 2, died at 9:02 a.m. Monday, March 4, 2002, at Huntingdon Manor, Huntingdon. Born May 27, 1922, in Barree Twp., Huntingdon County, she was the daughter of James and Bessie (Staley) McMahon, both deceased. She married George W. Fry May 2, 1941. He preceded her in death Dec. 9, 1983. She is survived by four children: George W. Fry Jr., Petersburg, R.R. 2; Mrs. James (Patricia) Waite, Bellefonte; Mrs. Frank (Marcella) Zauzig, Petersburg, R.R. 2, and James R. Fry, Petersburg, R.R. 2, as well as two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers and three sisters: Melvin McMahon, McConnellstown; Chalmers McMahon, Lemont; Gladys McMahon, Houserville; Kathleen Way, Matternville, and Betty Peters, Bellefonte. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Woodrow and Glenn McMahon, and one sister, Jean Shade. Mrs. Fry was of the Methodist faith. She was a graduate of the Petersburg Vocational High School and during her life was primarily a homemaker. She loved flowers and enjoyed baking. Interment will be made in Mooresville Cemetery, Petersburg, R.D. 1. Betty Ann (Couch) YOUNKER, 70, of McAlevys Fort, died Tuesday, March 5, 2002, at Centre Community Hospital, State College. Born Feb. 2, 1932, in Jackson Twp., Huntingdon County, she was the daughter of John M. and L. Imogene (McCall) Couch, both deceased. She was united in marriage to Robert H. Younker April 20, 1949, in Hagerstown, Md. He preceded her in death April 27, 1980. She is survived by a daughter, Cindy A. Laurer of Huntingdon; two sons, J. Robert Younker of Huntingdon, R.R., and Dennis R. Younker of Huntingdon, nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She is survived by two brothers, William Couch of Huntingdon, R.D. 2, and Paul Couch of Belleville. Mrs. Younker was a graduate of Huntingdon High School and a former member of the Cedarettes in State College. She worked as a housekeeper in the Huntingdon and State College areas. Mrs. Younker enjoyed shopping, auctions and gardening. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 9, at the Koch Funeral Home, 2401 S. Stanford Duane MOORE, 59, formerly of the Hill Valley, Mount Union, died at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, 2002, at the Media Nipple Convalescent Home in Thompsontown, where he had been residing. Born Dec. 6, 1942, in Cromwell Twp., Huntingdon County, he was the son of Richard A. and Minnie M. (Grove) Moore. His father is deceased. He is survived by his mother of Huntingdon; one daughter, Lori Moore Johnson; one niece and two nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Alton R. Moore, and one sister, Jean Moore Erb. Mr. Moore attended Singers Gap United Methodist Church, Mount Union, R.D. He was last employed at Letterkenny Army Depot, Chambersburg. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 9, at the Martin R. Brown Funeral Home in Orbisonia. Interment will be made in Monroe Valley Cemetery, Three Springs, R.D. Elsie A. SHEHAN of Newark, Del., 79, died at her home surrounded by family members Wednesday, March 6, 2002. Born in Minsk, Russia, she was preceded in death by her husband Clarence in 1981. Mrs. Shehan is survived by a son, Martin Shehan of California; daughters, Barbara Danley and Susan Fender of New Castle; and three grandchildren. Other survivors are three sisters, Vera Snyder of Mount Union and Janet Pace and Ranelle Hancharenko of Palm Beach, Fla. Services and interment were privately held. William L. HEATH, 62, of Broad Top City, died at 1:50 a.m. Wednesday, March 6, 2002, at Altoona Hospital, Altoona, following a lengthy illness. Born Nov. 20, 1939, in Broad Top, he was the son of Charles and Roberta (Taylor) Heath, both deceased. He was united in marriage to Sandra Luther in 1961, in Rockville, Md. He is survived by his wife; two sons, SFC Kirk Heath of Fort Carson, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Chris Heath of Hopewell; a daughter, Dawn Black of Hummelstown, as well as six grandchildren and one great-grandson. He is survived by two brothers and three sisters: Valeria "Frankie" Moser of Huntingdon, Isabell Miller of Hustontown, Herman Heath of Broad Top, Audrey Jones of Broad Top and Glenn Heath of Saxton. He was preceded in death by a sister, Peggy DeLuca, and a grandson. Mr. Heath was of the Methodist faith. He was a member of the Saxton Sportsmen Association, the Broad Top American Legion Post No. 126, Saxton VFW and Fraternal Order of Eagles of broad Top. He was former president of the Broad Top City Borough Council. Mr. Heath was a 1958 graduate of Robertsdale High School and worked in the coal mines, for New Enterprise Stone and Lime Co. and Seton Co. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 9, at the Curtis A. Heath Funeral Home, Broad Top City, with Pastor JoAnne Dugan officiating. Interment will be made in the Broad Top IOOF Cemetery. Robert A. MORRIS JR., 75, of Aprontree Personal Care Home in Spring Run, formerly of Shippensburg, died at 10:53 p.m. Thursday, March 7, 2002 at the home. Born Dec. 15, 1926, in Kistler, he was the son of Robert and Kathryne (Boyer) Morris, both deceased. He is survived by his wife, Maxine F. (Foore) Morris, who resides in Shippensburg. They married Dec. 5, 1945. Also surviving are two sons, Max A. Morris of Walkersville, Md., and James R. Morris of Saegertown, and a daughter, Jeannette Cisney Lauck of State College. Three sisters survive. They are: Gloria Hockenberry of Huntingdon, Virginia Gearhart of Casa Grande, Ariz. and LaWanda Youngblood of Chambersburg. Two step-sisters, Marie Hardy of Richmond Furnace and Sara Jane College of New Franklin, along with seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-mother Priscilla Morris and a brother, Raymond Morris. Mr. Morris was a member of the Upper Path Valley United Presbyterian Church in Spring Run. He was a member of Orrstown Lodge No. 262 F&AM, in Orrstown. He also was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees Chapter 1063 and of the Burt J. Asper Post 46 American Legion, both in Chambersburg. Mr. Morris attended the former Fannettsburg High School and the Mount Union High School. He later earned a GED and went on to receive an associate of arts degree from Brookdale Community College in Lincroft, N.J. in 1978. He worked for 30 years as a system analyst for the Department of the Navy in Mechanicsburg, retiring in 1987. He had previously been employed for 10 years by the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission. He owned and operated a farm in Amberson Valley since 1958. Mr. Morris served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Funeral services will be held Monday, March 11, at 11 a.m. at the John L. Agett Funeral Home, 18875 Main Street, Dry Run with the Rev. Douglas Kelly officiating. Interment will be made in Amberson Union Cemetery, Amberson, Pa. Diana A. SWOPE, 64, of Robertsdale, died at 6:55 a.m. Thursday, March 7, 2002, at Hershey Medical Center, Hershey. Born Feb. 5, 1938, in North Scranton, she was the daughter of Joseph and Mary Toscano, both deceased. She was united in marriage to William L. Swope in 1961, in Scranton. She is survived by her husband; a son, William J. Swope of Pittsburgh, and for grandchildren. A brother, Joseph Toscano of Scranton, survives. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Penny Lee Swope; three sisters and three brothers. Mrs. Swope was a member of the Robertsdale Church of God, where she was active in the Women of the Church of God group. She helped establish the RW&BT Ambulance Company, was a trained emergency medical technician and an American Red Cross instructor. She served as a den mother for Cub Scouts and was formerly an instructor for the Robertsdale Methodist Youth group. She was a 1956 graduate of Scranton High School and worked as a nurse's aid at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital in Huntingdon. Mrs. Swope enjoyed crocheting and knitting. DONALDSON, 90, of the Colonial Courtyard in Bedford, formerly of Coalmont, died at 4:25 a.m. this morning, Friday, March 8, 2002, at her current residence. She was born Sept. 3, 1911, in Mifflintown, Juniata County, the daugther of Harry and Hazel (Kauffman) Sherlock. She was united in marriage to Ernest G. "Hinish" Donaldson, Sept. 17, 1932, in Huntingdon. He preceded her in death June 18, 1985. She is survived by two daughters and one son; Margaret Paget of Hamburg, N.Y.; Norma Jean Bambling of Hopewell and Clarence Donaldson of Springfield, Mo., as well as nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. She is survived by three sisters: Hazel Leabhart of Coalmont, Betty Luther of Saxton and Jacqueline Watson of Broad Top City. She was preceded in death by two sons, Ernest and Ralph Donaldson, and five brothers; Warren, Gene, Gerald, Harold and Kenneth Sherlock. Mrs. Donaldson was a member of the Coalmont United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Daughters of America. Coalmont Quilters, Little Valley Farm Society, Saxton Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary, and a life member of the Hopewell Senior Citizens. She formerly worked as a machine operator at Scampers Manufacturing in Saxton. She enjoyed a variety of crafts. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 10, at the D. FAGAN, 70, 408 Moore St., Huntingdon, died at 11:45 p.m. Friday, March 8, 2002, at his residence, following an extended illness. Born Sept. 23, 1931, in Huntingdon, he was the son of Newton B. and Ruth E. (Woodle) Fagan. He was preceded in death by his father. His mother survives at the Morrison's Cove Home in Martinsburg. He was united in marriage to Martha J. Franks Dec. 3, 1955, in Winchester, Va., by the Rev. Millard Rewis. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, at home; a son, Timothy R. Fagan, and a daughter, Debra K. (Fagan) Bowser, both of Huntingdon, as well as four grandchildren. Mr. Fagan is survived by two brothers and one sister, Don A. Fagan of Huntingdon, Jack J. Fagan of Morgantown, W. Va., and Catherine Jean (Fagan) Teeters of Huntingdon. Mr. Fagan was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Huntingdon. He attended Huntingdon Public schools, graduating from Huntingdon High School in the Class of 1950. He served with the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict, from 1950 until 1954, attaining the rank of Airman Second Class. He retired from the F. L. Smithe Machine Company in 1992, after 27 years as a machinist. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting, camping, photography and his family. He had lived at his current residence since 1965. A private memorial service will be held at the First United Methodist Church at the convenience of Mr. Fagan's family, with the Rev. Doyle H. Klinger Jr. officiating. Mary Irene PAVONE, 95, of 711 Park Ave., Tyrone, died at 8 a.m. Saturday, March 9, 2002, at her residence. She was born Aug. 31, 1906, in Bellefonte, the daughter of Lemuel Robert and Flora Etta (Shook) Poorman, both deceased. She was united in marriage to John W. Pavone Dec. 19, 1936, in Cumberland, Md. He preceded her in death May 21, 1968. She is survived by a son, John W. Pavone Jr. of Homestead, Fla., and a brother, William Poorman of Arlington, Texas, as well as several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters. Mrs. Pavone was of the Protestant faith. Christopher Scott GUYER, 42, of 600 Penn St., Apt. 302, Huntingdon, died at 10:30 p.m. Sunday, March 10, 2002, at Altoona Hospital, Altoona, following an extended illness. He was born Aug. 31, 1959, in Huntingdon, the son of James S. and Shirley M. (Frazer) Guyer. He is survived by his father of Mount Union; his mother, at 600 Penn St., Apt, 409, Huntingdon, and his maternal grandmother, Madaline M. (Patterson) Frazer, who also resides at 600 Penn St., Huntingdon. Mr. Guyer is survived by one brother, Curtis Alan Guyer of Huntingdon, as well as two nephews and one niece. Mr. Guyer was a member of the 15th Street United Methodist Church, Huntingdon. He attended Huntingdon public schools, graduating from Huntingdon Area High School with the Class of 1977. He was a volunteer at the Huntingdon County Humane Society and helped found the Huntingdon-Mifflin-Juniata Chapter of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) and the Family Networking Project. He was an avid fly fisherman. He also enjoyed, and was quite proficient at ping pong. He was a proponent of the Peace Chapel and the effort for world peace. "Bud" HESS, 78, of Penn Twp., Hesston, died at 9:55 p.m. Sunday, March 10, 2002, at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon. Mr. Hess had been in failing health since October 2001. Born March 8, 1924, in Hesston, he was the son of Arthur P. and Mabel (Hoover) Hess, both deceased. He was united in marriage to Jean A. Naugle by the Rev. Marlin Botteiger, April 10, 1949, at Mr. Zion Lutheran Church, Stone Creek Ridge, Huntingdon. He is survived by his wife, at home; one son, M. Wayne Hess Jr. of Moller Twp., Huntingdon; one daughter, Mrs. Frederick N. (Deborah A.) Kyle of Smithfield Twp., Huntingdon, as well as four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He is survived by two brothers and two sisters: Max W. Hess, Walter G. Hess, and Catherine Cissel, all of Penn Twp., Hesston, and Peggy Bigelow of Williamsburg, Va. He was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother, Margaret Mills, Anna Wible, Eleanor Keller and Paul Hess. Mr. Hess was of the Protestant faith. He served as past commander and member of the color guard of the Frank P. Hommon Post No. 24, American Legion, Huntingdon. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge No. 223, Huntingdon; Standing Stone Post No. 1754, VFW, Huntingdon, and Whispering Pines Hunting Camp, Belfast, N.Y. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theatre of Operations and saw action in the Normandy Invasion and the Battle of the Bulge. He attended Hesston public schools and retired May 1983 from Owens Corning Fiberglas as a supervisor in the twist and ply department after 32 years of service. Born Sept. 17, 1939, in Huntingdon County, she was the daughter of Frances (Brenneman) Miller, who survives in Mapleton, and the late Howard James Estep. She was united in marriage to James Port, who preceded her in death. She is survived by six children; Paul Howard Breon of Lewistown; Gary William Breon of Olath, Kan.; Karen Christine Houch of Clarksville, Tenn.; Tracy Estep of Mapleton; Dennis Estep of Hill Valley, and Mrs. Robin (Julie) Adair of Wetumpka, Ala., as well as 14 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Fred Brown ROHER, 84, of Huntingdon, died at 10:35 p.m. Monday, March 11, 2002, at Lewistown Hospital, Lewistown. Born March 19, 1917, in Three Springs, he was the son of Joshua and Olive (Lane) Roher, both deceased. He was united in marriage to Vera Ellen Whitsel Oct. 20, 1941. Mrs. Roher preceded him in death June 3, 1993. He is survived by three sons and three daughters: Robert Roher, Blanchard, Okla.; Mrs. George (Naomi) Winnick, Three Springs; Mrs. James (Dolores) Stetchock, Cassville; Scott Roher, Three Springs; Rodney Roher, Three Springs, and Brenda Johnson, Cheyenne, Wyo., as well as 17 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. A nephew, Rory Whitsel of Mapleton, who was reared in Mr. Roher's home, survives. Two sisters survive: Clema Nead of Three Springs and Martha Hamilton of Mount Union. He was preceded in death by one brother, Melvin Roher. Mr. Roher was a charter member of the Immanuel Bible Church, Three Springs, where he served as a Sunday School teacher for a number of years. Born March 28, 1920, at her family home on Penn Street, Huntingdon, she was the daughter of Walter and Philomene (Cornelius) Honstine, both deceased. She was united in marriage to Richard W. Streightiff July 12, 1941, in Winchester, Va., by the Rev. Flickenger. She is survived by her husband of Huntingdon; one son, Barry W. Streightiff of Mapleton; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Dale W. Streightiff, and a brother, John Honstine. Mrs. Streightiff was a member of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, 1019 Moore St., Huntingdon, where she was active in both church and Sunday School for 60 years. He was born June 7, 1908, in Huntingdon, the son of Blair L. and Laura B. (Naugle) Snare, both deceased. He was united in marriage to Louise Pollock Feb. 14, 1934, in Huntingdon, by the Rev. E.B. Davidson. He is survived by his wife, at home, two sons, Robert B. Snare of Bradenton, Fla., and Donald C. Snare of Thomasville, and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Pearl Snare. Mr. Snare was a member of the Huntingdon Christian and Missionary Alliance Church. He was a member of the Frank P Hommon Post No. 24, American Legion, Huntingdon; Smithfield Volunteer Fire Company and SERS. He was a 1925 graduate of Huntingdon High School and a 1929 graduate of the Altoona School of Commerce. Mr. Snare was a World War II Veteran, having served as a corporal in the United States Army in the American Theatre of Operations. He retired as business manager from the State Correctional Institution Huntingdon, where he gave 40 years of service. Mr. Snare was an avid fan of baseball and had formerly coached Little League Baseball, VFW Teener League and City League Baseball in Huntingdon. He had resided at Valley View Terrace since June 1998. STAPLETON, 69, of Altoona, formerly of 715 Weaver St., Saxton, died Tuesday, March 12, 2002, at Valley View Nursing Home, Altoona. Born Oct. 13, 1932, in Robertsdale, she was the daughter of Howard and Sara (Horton) Brown, both deceased. She was united in marriage to George Stapleton Dec. 23, 1949, in Cumberland, Md. She is survived by her husband; four daughters: Connie Rundle of Altoona; Sally Brown of Dotham, Ala.; Mary Lynn Ellinger of Telford and Carol Amos of Robertsdale; Three sons: George Stapleton of New Enterprise, Tim Stapleton of Dudley and David Stapleton of Burke, Va.; 19 Grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Randy and Scotty. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by 10 brothers and four sisters. Mrs. Stapleton was primarily a homemaker, but worked for a number of years at the Saxton Community Library and Rundle's Resale Shop in Saxton. She enjoyed reading, crafts and her grandchildren. Interment will be made in Broad Top IOOF Cemetery. M/Sgt. Edward P. CAROWICK, 80, U.S. Army (Ret.), of Huntingdon, died Tuesday, March 12, 2002, at his home. Mr. Carowick's death was unexpected. He was born March 1, 1922, in Todd, the son of John and Mary (Oswalt) Carowick, both deceased. He married Esther Mae Moon April 14, 1951, in Calvin. He is survived by his wife, at home; two sons, Michael E. Carowick of Huntingdon, and Timothy Carowick of Sterling Heights, Mich,; Two daughters, Suzanne E. Wampler of Coopersburg and Sylvia L. Kurtz of Huntingdon, and 14 grandchildren. He is survived by four brothers and sisters: Antoinette Moon of Todd; Stanley Carowick of Akron, Ohio; Stella Harvey of White Hall, Ohio, and Frances Brown of Todd. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank and Albert Carowick. Mr. Carowick was a member of the Calvary Independent Baptist Church, Huntingdon. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943 and served, during World War II, with the 101st Airborne Division. He was wounded in the airborne invasion of Holland and received the Purple Heart. He returned to his unit prior to the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded the Bronze Star with "V" device for valor for service at the Battle of Bastogne. He also received numerous ribbons and awards in a variety of campaigns, including the Master Parachutist Badge. Following World War II, Mr. Carowick was stationed at Fort Benning, Ga.; Fort Campbell, Ky., and Fort Bragg, N.C. He also served in southern Germany from 1956 to 1959 and in the Republic of Korea in 1962 and 1963. At his last three duty stations, he served as first sergeant and assistant division engineer. Following his retirement from the U.S. Army March 1, 1964, with the rank of master sergeant, Mr. Carowick was employed by the U.S. Postal Service in State College until his retirement, June 1984. He was a member of the 101st Airborne Division Association, 82nd Airborne Division Association, Disabled American Veterans and their Retired Enlisted Association. Mr. Carowick was also an avid gardener and enjoyed hunting. RONK, 76, of 8206 Ferguson Valley Rd., McVeytown, died at 12:40 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, 2002, at Lewistown Hospital, Lewistown. He was born July 28, 1925, in Shirleysburg, the son of David W. and Naomi T. (Newman) Runk. He married Dorothy J. Kane June 5, 1949, at the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Mount Union. He is survived by his wife, at home; two sons and two daughters, Wayne C. Runk of Potters Mills, Susan R. Brodie of State College, Ronald E. Ronk of Milton and Peggy J. Wien of Delmont; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Four brothers survive: Kenneth Runk of Wisconsin; Sheldon Runk of McVeytown; Max Runk of Punxsutawney and Boyd Runk of Mount Union. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter and six brothers and sisters: Eva Morgan, Iona Hooper, Thelma Runk, Vera Ranck, Hayden Runk and Edwin Runk. Mr. Runk was a member of the Spring Run Church of the Brethren, McVeytown. He was a member of the Big Spring Lodge No. 361, F&AM, Newville; St. John's Royal Arch Chapter No. 171, Carlisle, and a life member of the Atkinsons Mills Sportsman's Association. He attended Shirleysburg Elememtary School and Mount Union High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theatre of Operations. Mr. Runk retired in 1973 as a gauger with Mobil Oil Company, in the Altoona office, after 23 years of service. He also farmed in Ferguson Valley for many years. Fifth St., Bellwood, died at 8:50 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, 2002, at the manor. She was born June 24, 1910, in Birmingham, the daughter of Harry and Lulu (Stevens) Bathurst, both deceased. She married Edward H. Dunn Sr. March 27, 1929, in Chicago, Ill. Mr. Dunn Died May 9, 1974. She is survived by a daughter, Thelma Mae Jones of Westminister Woods, Huntingdon; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Edward H. Dunn Jr., April 1981. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by three sisters. Mrs. Dunn had been a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, Bellwood, since 1980, and was active in the What-So-Ever Class, the Ladies Bible Class, the Pioneer Sunday School Class and was a charter member of United Methodist Women. She was a trustee of the Bellwood-Antis Public Library and a member of the Bellwood Chapter 1063 AARP; The Arcana Chapter 38 of Minneapolis, Minn., and was a volunteer at Epworth Manor, Tyrone, where she later resided, beginning in 1993. She had been employed during the 1940's at the Shaffer Store, Main Street, Bellwood. Interment will be made in Logan Valley Cemetery, Bellwood. Lawrence E. "Jiggs" WILSON, 73, of Mount Union, died at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 12, 2002, at Huntingdon Manor, Huntingdon. Mr. Wilson had been in failing health since February. Born May 29, 1928, in Orbisonia, he was the son of Lawrence Swoop and Ann F. (Tell) Wilson Abrashoff, both deceased. He was united in marriage to Margaret Louise Dick April 18, 1952, in Winnfield, La. He is survived by his wife; two sons, Ricky E. Wilson and Randall K. Wilson, both of Mount Union; a daughter, Amy Diane Gilbert of Mount Union; a grandson, James R. Williams, who was reared in Mr. Wilson's home; three granddaughters, one great-grandson and five great-granddaughters. He is also survived by one niece and one nephew. Mr. Wilson was preceded in death by a son, Brian Duane Wilson; a brother, Harry Wilson; a sister, Louise Daughenbaugh, and his stepfather, Asparuk "Butch" Abrashoff. Mr. Wilson was a member of the Allenport United Methodist Church, where he was active in church functions, taught a youth Sunday School class, served as a youth leader and participated in the Ladies' Prayer Breakfasts. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post No. 107, Mount Union. He attended high school in Orbisonia and entered the Merchant Marines, where he served for eight years. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and then with the U.S. Army Reserves, Company C. 491st Engineering Battalion, for 13 years. He was employed at R. B. Madden's in Mount Union as a parts manager. He also worked as a mechanic for a number of years at Rog Garner Chevrolet, Mount Union, and Huston Ford, Mount Union. More recently, he worked as a field technician for Owens Corning Fiberglas, until retiring on disability April 1985. Mr. Wilson loved to spend time tinkering with anything mechanical. Melvin Boyd "Mike" WEYANDT, 85, of Crestwood Drive, Juniata Twp., Huntingdon, died at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 13, 2002, in the emergency room at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon. He was born May 21, 1916, in East Freedom, the son of Jesse and Mary (Butler) Weyandt, both deceased. He was united in marriage to Lois M. Bruckman, June 29, 1940, in Winchester, Va. He is survived by his wife, at home; two daughters, Mrs. John (Miriam) Thomas of State College and Patricia "Sally" Echard of McVeytown; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Dr. Timothy Boyd Weyandt, June 26, 2001. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family, having been preceded in death by six brothers and two sisters. Mr. Weyandt was a member of the Christian Assembly of Huntingdon. He had been primarily self-employed throughout his lifetime, retiring in 1962. COVERT, 75, of HCR 60, Orbisonia, died at 9:47 p.m. Wednesday, March 13, 2002, at Altoona Hospital, Altoona. Born Nov. 8, 1926, in Cromwell Twp., Huntingdon County, he was the son of Leslie W. and Lucinda F. (Runk) Covert. He married Joyce L. Cohenour May 9, 1953. He is survived by his wife, at home, and three sons and four daughters: Richard A. Covert and Susan B. Grove, both of Shirleysburg; Cathy L. Gilliland and Galen R. Covert, both of HCR 60, Orbisonia; Marlene D. McClure of HCR 60, Shirleysburg; Brian K. Covert of HCR 60, Orbisonia, and Lesley D. Shoemaker of Spring Run. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, four step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren. He is survived by two brothers and five sisters: Clifford Covert, Orbisonia; Amanda Plank, Shirleysburg; Dorothy Fields, Three Springs; Mildred Booher, Orbisonia; John B. Covert, Venice, Fla.; Erma Ulsh, Rockhill Furnace, and Esther P. Covert, Huntingdon. A sister, Myrtle Knepper, and two brothers, Wilbert and E. Leroy Covert, preceded him in death. Mr. Covert attended Rockhill Church of the Brethren, Rockhill Furnace. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army in Europe. William Edgar LINDSAY of Box 251, Hesston, died at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, March 14, 2002, at Altoona Hospital. Mr. Lindsey was born Jan. 23, 1914, in Huntingdon, the son of Edgar C. and Lillian Esther (Oakman) LIndsay. On April 20, 1935, he was married to Mildred Anna Brenneman, daughter of Byron Ray and Rachel Anna (Strait) Brenneman. His wife and a son, William Edgar Lindsey Jr., a retired Air Force colonel, and two grandchildren survive him. His sister, Rosalia M. Robinson, also survives. Mr. Lindsay was a member of the Stone Church of the Brethren in Huntingdon, having attended there since 1922. He was a graduate of Huntingdon High School, in the class of 1931. In 1933, he was employed as a clerk for the engineering firm of John R. Wald Company which specialized in the installation of complete industries in prisons throughout the United States. During World War II, the Wald Company manufactured ammunition components for the military, and Mr. Lindsay was in charge of obtaining priority ratings and governmental allocations for materials needed. He was also in charge of the inventory control system in the five factories in Tyrone which employed about 1,200 persons. In 1946, a new and separate manufacturing company, Wald Industries, Inc., was formed and Mr. Lindsay transferred to that company, in charge of purchasing, scheduling and cost control. In 1954, he was named a vice president and then became a director. In 1963, he became vice president of manufacturing, giving him direct control of the manufacturing facilities of the company, by then know as Universal Corporation. Within a few years, this facility had expanded to include two factories in Pennsylvania, one in Atlanta, Ga., and one in Texas. In his earlier years, Mr. Lindsay was an avid outdoor enthusiast, helping to establish the first archery club in the area. He hunted and fished for many years. In later years, he did genealogy research and wrote family histories for his own and other families. He was a former member and past president of the Huntingdon County Historical Society. Elsie Marie (Fields) CLIPPINGER, 80, of HCR 73, Three Springs, died at 12:40 p.m. Thursday, March 14, 2002, at Community General Osteopathic Hospital, Harrisburg, following a lengthy illness. She was born Feb. 13, 1922, in Clay Twp., Huntingdon County, the daughter of George and Viola (McClain) Fields, both deceased. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Samuel Wilson Clippinger of Three Springs, whom she married Sept. 20, 1944. Surviving are 14 children: Ester Scott, Fort Walton Beach, Fla.,; Roger Clippinger and Elaine Miller, both of Hagerstown, Md.; Freda Miller, McConnellsburg; George Clippinger, Needmore; Donald Clippinger, Three Springs; Donna Ritter, Wichita Falls, Texas; May Swartz, Huntingdon; Fred Clippinger, Three Springs; Glenda Machia, Lancaster; Anita Clippinger, Ephrata; James Clippinger and Robert Clippinger, both of Hustontown, and Carl Clippinger, Robertsdale. Also surviving are 19 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Two sisters and three brothers survive: Mary Cornell of Everett; Violet Haun of Altamonte Springs, Fla., Raymond and Jesse Fields, both of Three Springs, and Glenn Fields of Tyrone. Two sisters, one granddaughter and one great-granddaughter preceded her in death. Mrs. Clippinger was a member of the Cherry Grove Church of God, Three Springs. She attended Cherry Grove School as a child and received her GED in 1984. A farm wife and devoted mother and grandmother, she enjoyed gardening, sewing and spending time with her family. He worked as a laborer at New Enterprise Stone and Lime Co. and had previously worked in the following coal mines; Rockhill Coal Co., J.W. Coal Co., Parson Brothers Coal Co. and G.M. McCrossen Coal Co. He also worked for H.J. Williams Construction and was a self-employed mechanic. He enjoyed gardening and doing mechanical work. Evelyn M. "Evie" WOLFE, 85, of Altoona, died Saturday Morning, March 16, 2002, following a brief illness. She was born Dec. 25, 1917, in Wood, Huntingdon County, the daughter of James Edward and Rose (Edwards) McGahey. She married John Reginald Wolfe March 6, 1937. The couple recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. She is survived by her husband; a son, John Wolfe Jr. of York; four daughters: Mrs. Bill (Sandra) Cover of Rainier, Wash.; Mrs. Ronnie (Sally) Nicewonger of Altoona; Mrs. Robert (Judith) Williams of Yardley and Deborah Wolfe of Tuccon, Ariz.; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She is survived by two brothers, Don of Rockville, Md., and Dean of Southington, Conn., and one sister, Sara of Altoona. Mrs. Wolfe was a long-time member of Fairview United Methodist Church. She held leadership positions in many organizations, including the Talus Rock Girl Scouts, American Cancer Society, YMCA and United Methodist Women. Nearly 50 years ago, Mrs. Wolfe organized Altoona's first UNICEF drive. She devoted her life to serving her family, church and community. Third St., Tyrone, died at 7:54 a.m. Saturday, March 16, 2002, at Tyrone Hospital following an extended illness. born Nov. 27, 1917, in Johnstown, he was the son of Domenic and Santa Patti Panasiti, both deceased. He was united in marriage to Mary Szczerba June 18, 1949, at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Huntingdon. He is survived by his wife; one son, Stephen Panasiti of Hollidaysburg; one daughter, Mrs. Ray (Mary Jo) Barber of Tyrone; two grandsons and a number of nieces and nephews. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family, having been preceded in death by two brothers, Anthony "Tony" and James Panasiti, and two sisters, Margaret "Mickey" Ferrari and Vincenza "Jennie" Wolfe. Mr. Panasiti was a member of St. Matthew's Roman Catholic Church, Tyrone. He was a life member of BPOE No. 212; a 31-year member of Tyrone Rotary Club; a member of the Heidelberg Country Club; a charter member of the Sinking Valley County Club and a member of the Original Gardner Guards Drum and Bugle Corps. He was a 1937 graduate of Tyrone High School and a World War II U.S. Army veteran. Mr. Panasiti was co-owner of the family business, the former Villa Restaurant, in Tyrone, for 43 years until his retirement in 1979. Susan Faith (Hileman) ELDER, 95, of Homewood Retirement Center, Martinsburg, formerly of 611 Eighth St., Saxton, died at 4:24 a.m. Saturday, March 16, 2002, at the retirement center. She was born June 14, 1906, in Hileman Heights, Altoona, the daughter of Blair B. and Mary M. (Isenberg) Hileman, both deceased. She was united in marriage to Charles Robert Elder Oct. 26, 1927, in Philipsburg. He preceded her in death Aug. 9, 1954. She enjoyed reading, gardening, traveling and volunteering at Homewood Retirement Center and as a tutor for the adult literacy program. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon. Born Jan. 23, 1949, in Bloomsburg, she was the daughter of Marvin and Charlotte (Carolous) Haubnick of Lewistown, who survives. Jerry Glenn GRISSINGER, 62, of Three Springs, died at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 17, 2002, in East Providence Twp., Bedford county, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident. Born Nov. 25, 1939, in Springfield Twp., Huntingdon County, he was the son of Ernest S. and Bertha M. (Cromwell) Grissinger, both deceased. He is survived by four sisters and two brothers; Helen Goschke, Beaver; Wayne Grissinger, Three Springs; Doris Shore, Brunswick, Ohio; Jack Grissinger, North Ridgeville, Ohio; Virginia Hurd, Cheyenne, Wyo., and Mary Jane Graham, Beaver. An infant sister, Dorothy, and two brothers, Eldon and Samuel Grissinger, preceded him in death. Mr. Grissinger was of the Protestant faith. He was a member of the Three Springs Ambulance Company, where he volunteered as a driver. He served in the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1961, spending a portion of his time in Korea. "Grammy" BEST, 84, of Grand Ledge, Mich., formerly of Mount Union, died Monday, March 18, 2002. GRISSINGER, 86, of Bridgeville, formerly of Jefferson Hills and Mount Union, died Monday, March 18, 2002, at Country Meadows Nursing Center in Bridgeville, where he has been residing. Born Nov. 28, 1915, in Kewanee, Ill., he was the son of Russell and Mae Grissinger, both deceased. He was united in marriage to Mary Belle Culver Aug. 10, 1940, in Williamson, Va. His wife, to whom he was married almost 53 years, preceded him en death May 3, 1993. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Larry (Margo) Berger of Tempe, Ariz., and Mrs. Bruce (Linda) Mungai of Lancaster, and three grandchildren. A sister, Lorma Gale Culter of Columbus, Ohio, survives. He was preceded in death by a brother, Earl Grissinger. Mr. Grissinger moved from Kewanee, Ill., to Mount Union at a young age and graduated from Mount Union High School with the Class of 1933. He began working for the G.C. Murphy Company in Midland, November 1933, as a stockboy and retired from the company April 23, 1981, as vice president in charge of store planning and construction. A veteran of World War II, Mr. Grissinger temporarily left G.C. Murphy's August 1943, to enlist in the United States Army, where he was accepted into Officer's Candidate School and Tank Destroyer School. He was sent overseas into combat as a first Lieutenant April 1944. While in Germany, he was captured by Nazi soldiers Nov. 26, 1944. He escaped April 1945, and received a Purple Heart for injuries suffered in captivity. Upon his return to the states, he went back to work for G.C. Murphy and held various positions during his 47 years of service, and was elected to the company's board of directors Oct. 20, 1975. He and his family moved frequently during his time with the company and ended up in Jefferson Borough, near Pittsburgh, in 1967. Funeral Services will be held at Noon Friday, March 22, at the John F. (Brand) ESPY, 93, formerly of Spruce Creek, died at 10:25 p.m. Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at Moran's Home, Bellwood. Born Aug. 22, 1908, in Bavaria, Germany, she was the daughter of Hans and Karolina Brand, both deceased. She was united in marriage to John Paul Espy Sr. May 2, 1936, in Altoona. He preceded her in death Oct. 24, 1961. She is survived by a son, John Paul Espy Jr. of Spruce Creek; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Herman F. Espy, Jan. 21, 1997, and a sister, Emma Unrath, March 3, 1998. Mrs. Espy was a member of the Lower Spruce Creek Presbyterian Church, where she had been active in the Ladies' Aid organization, as well as the church. She retired from the U.S. Post Office at Spruce Creek after 25 years of service. She served as post-master for 21 years and as a clerk for four years prior to being appointed postmaster. Mrs. Espy enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Born April 21, 1927, in Philadelphia, he was the son of Margaret Hamilton Detwiler, who survives in Saxton, and the late Rev. Robert Grant Detwiler Sr. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Jean Deloris (Barkdoll) Detwiler; two sons, David Robert Detwiler of Hagerstown, Md., and Allen J. Detwiler of Boonsboro, Md.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Two bothers survive: Lawrence and Allen Detwiler, both of Saxton. Mr. Detwiler attended Bethel United Methodist Church in Chewsville, Md. He was a member and a former vice president of the FOP Thomas Pangborn Lodge No. 88. Elizabeth "Betsy" Gregory ROSS, 91, formerly of Pennsylvania and Anaheim, Calif., a resident of the Hermitage of Northern Virginia in Alexandria, Va., died Wednesday, March 20, 2002, following an extended illness. She was born Feb. 14, 1911, in Petersburg, the daughter of the late Ralph D. and Anna (Bell) Gregory. Her husband, Dr. B. Paul Ross, preceded her in death. They had been married for 55 years. She is survived by a son and two daughters, Robert Ross of Alexandria, Va., Judith Ross Vaden of Fountain Valley, Calif , and Marilyn Ross of Alexandria, Va.; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Two sisters survive, Martha Laird of Pasadena, Calif., and Marjorie Wise of Jupiter, Fla., as do numerous nieces and nephews. A brother, Wesley, and two sisters, Hazel Hurley and Laura Gregory, preceded in death. Mrs. Ross was a 1932 graduate of Juniata College and earned two master's degrees from the Pennsylvania State University. She was an accomplished educator at both the secondary and college levels, a textile chemist and a senior member of the American Society of Quality Control. Born May 26, 1938, at Three Springs, R.D., she was the daughter of Joseph and Helena (Watkins) Leighton, both deceased. She was twice married, first to Lester Rogers, who preceded her in death. She married Harold E. Cutchall Dec. 16, 1977. She is survived by her husband, at home; one son, Stephen J. Rogers of Three Springs; one step-son, Tracy E. Cutshall of Mapleton; two grandchildren and one step-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by a son, Mark M. Rodgers. Born Oct. 5, 1916, in Altoona, he was the son of the late Holace and Eva (Wolfe) Glunt. He was united in marriage to Maudlene E. Cook May 28, 1944, in Hagerstown, Md. He is survived by one brother, Johnthan Glunt of HCR 71, Orbisonia, and three sisters: Jean Jaymes of Chambersburg, Lois Miller of HCR 71, Orbisonia, and Thelma Goshorn of Linglestown, One brother, Edwin Glunt, and one sister, Rhoda (Glunt) Mills, preceded him in death. He was born Sept. 7, 1933, in New Germantown, Perry County, the son of Wilmer and Alda (Smith) Hockenberry, both deceased. He was united in marriage to Joyce Fritz who preceded him in death in 1997. He is survived by one son, Steven N. Hockenberry of Duncannon; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a companion, Marlene K. Couch of Huntingdon, with whom he resided. Two brothers, John Hockenberry of Danville and Gene Hockenberry of Newport, and one sister, Mrs. Tony (Wanda) Campbell of Loysville, survive. He was preceded in death by one brother. Mr. Hockenberry was a life member of the North American Hunting Club. He was employed as a truck driver for Empire Kosher in Mifflintown and retired on disability. Interment will be made in Juniata Memorial Park, Lewistown. Eleanor G. (Hall) RUBY, 67, of 3615 Highmeadow Drive, Canfield, Ohio, died Monday, March 25, 2002, at the Austinwood Care Center in Austinwood, Ohio. She was born Dec. 9, 1934, in Aitch (Newburg), the daughter of the late Alfred J. and Mary (Hull) Hall. She was married to Max Ruby Dec. 17, 1955. Mr. Ruby survives at home. She is survived by a daughter, Beverly Kravec of Austintown, Ohio, and one granddaughter. Four sisters and three brothers survive: Juliann Holland, Huntingdon; Catharine Reed, Homer City; Audrey Edwards, Bertha Baker and Alfred J. Hall Jr., all of North Jackson, Ohio; Daniel Hall, Charlotte, N.C., and Dexter Hall, Indianapolis, Ind. She was preceded in death by her stepmother, Ruth V. Ripple Hall Heckthorn, and three brothers, Chester, Lester and Harold. Mrs. Ruby was a member of the Grace Church of the Nazarene in Youngstown, Ohio. She was a 1953 graduate of Saxton-Liberty High School. She worked as a bus driver for the Mahoning County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities for 14 years and prior to that, as a custodian at the Christ United Presbyterian Church in Youngstown, Ohio. Mrs. Ruby enjoyed being with her family, crafts and traveling. Funeral services were held March 28, at the Lane Funeral Chapel in Austintown, Ohio. Interment was made in Green Haven Cemetery, Austintown, Ohio. Max L. BROWN, 67, of North Tonawanda, N.Y., died at his home Monday, March 25, 2002. Born April 23, 1934, in Six Mile Run, he was the son of the late Earl D. and Mary O. Brown. He married Sheila Bookhagen in Buffalo, N.Y. July 24, 1965. Mrs. Brown survives at home. A son and a daughter, Kevin brown and Mrs. Rodney (Jeannette) Parise, and two grandchildren survive. A sister, Mildred Vance, and a brother, Jay Brown, both of Baltimore, Md., also survive. Two brothers preceded him in death, Base and Jack Brown. Mr. Brown was of the Protestant faith. He was a 1952 graduate of Saxton-Liberty High School. He retired in 1990 from Bethlehem Steel as a millwright and lived in Orbisonia for a few years before returning to New York. He was a veteran of the U.S, Army having served in Germany. Roxie Louise (Brumbarger-Bilger) HAMMERS, 83, formerly of Blair House Apts., 600 Penn St., Huntingdon, died at 11:35 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at Huntingdon Manor, Huntingdon, where she had resided since May 2000. She became a resident of the Blair House in 1995. She was born July 28, 1918, in Huntingdon County, the daughter of the late John Thomas and Mary (Fitzgerald) Bumbarger. She was first married to Plummer H. Bilger July 26, 1934. Mr. Bilger survives in Alexandria. She married Charles H. Hammers July 7, 1967, in Huntingdon. Mr. Hammers preceded her in death in May 1983. She is survived by two sons and four daughters: Thomas Bilger, James Creek; William Bilger, Tyrone; Mrs. John (Janet) Herbert, Smithfield Twp., Huntingdon; Mrs. James D. (Mary) Wiser, Huntingdon; Patricia Hess, Huntingdon; and Mrs. Ronald (Barbara) Schmidt, Washington, Pa. Fifteen grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson survive. A brother, Marvin Mickel of Altoona, and two sisters, Mrs. Ralph (Eunice) Miller of Hollidaysburg and Mrs. Melvin (Catherine) Metzger of North Collins N.Y., survive. She was preceded in death by three sisters: Huldah Leonard, Margaret Garman and Esther Sneath; a brother, Luther Bumbarger; two grandsons, Robert and Tim Rightnour; and a great-grandson, Devin Markel. Mrs. Hammers was a member of the Huntingdon Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. She attended Petersburg Vocational High School. Following completion of Licensed Practical Nursing School in 1960 at Bellefonte Hospital, she had been employed at Bellefonte Hospital. She also worked as an LPN at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon; Bridgeton Hospital, Bridgeton, N.J.; and at the Brethren Nursing Home, Hanover. She also worked for a number of years as a seamstress at various clothing factories. Mrs. Hammers enjoyed sewing, crocheting, knitting and reading. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 30, at the Cutright-Speck Funeral Home, 207 Ridge Road, Smithfield Twp., Huntingdon. Mabel (Meckbach) Isenberg COFFMAN, 95, a resident of Huntingdon Manor since 1997, formerly of 20 West 33rd St., Huntingdon, died at 4:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 27, 2002, at Huntingdon Manor, Huntingdon. Her death was unexpected. She was born July 2, 1906, in Huntingdon, the daughter of George W. and Blanche (Snyder) Meckbach. She was first married to Alfted T. Isenberg Sept. 24, 1930. He preceded her in death Feb. 17, 1942. Her second union was to Samuel J. Coffman June 24, 1949. He preceded her in death June 22, 1956. Both marriages took place at the Abbey Reformed Church, Huntingdon, and both were performed by Dr. Hobart D. McKeehan. One daughter, Anne Elizabeth (Isenberg) Fagan of Lock Haven, survives. There is one grandson. Mrs. Coffman was preceded in death by two sisters: Caroline E. Meckbach, who died in infancy in 1908, and Anna S. (Meckbach) Weber who died in 1955. Mrs. Coffman was a lifetime member of the Abbey Reformed United Church of Christ, Huntingdon. She served as a Sunday School teacher, deacon and elder of her church. She was a graduate of Huntingdon High School, Class of 1922, and Juniata College, Class of 1926 with a bachelor of arts degree. She earned her master's degree in education at the Pennsylvania State University in 1958, and she also attended North Western University in Evanston, Ill., and Lehigh University in Bethlehem. Mrs. Coffman taught English and Latin during most of her teaching career. She taught at Brown Twp. High School in Reedsville from 1926-1928; Juniata High School in Altoona, 1928-1929; Robertsdale High School, 1942-1943; Howard High School, Centre County, 1943-1949; Juniata Valley High School, 1955-1957; Huntingdon Area High School, 1957 until her retirement in 1971. She was a life member of the National Education Association and the Pennsylvania State Education Association, and she was a life member of both the Pennsylvania Retired Teachers Association and National Retired Teachers Association. She was also a member of Pi Lambda Theta (National Honor Society), Huntingdon County Historical and Donation Grange. Mrs. Coffman served on the executive committee of Huntingdon County Extension Service and was a former president of the 4-H Development Fund Committee. In 1972-1973, she devoted several months to work as a volunteer house parent at Crossnore School Inc. in Crossnore, N.C., an institution for underprivileged children in which she was interested for the greater part of her life. She enjoyed traveling and teaching. A funeral service will be held at the John B. Brown Funeral Home, Huntingdon, at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 30. The Rev. Gary Marcy will officiate. Interment will be made in the Alexandria Presbyterian Cemetery, Alexandria. Nicloa "Nick" PERTA, 93, of Laureldale, died at 2:29 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, 2002. His death was unexpected. He is survived by his wife, Grace (Villano) Perta of Laureldale. Other survivors are a son, Michael of Dearborn, Mich.; a daughter, Rachel (Perta) Cammarano of Laureldale; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Born in San Marco, Italy, Feb. 21, 1909, he was the son of the late Michael and Rachel (Guliana) Perta. Perta was employed for 31 years by L. Greif Brothers at the Mount Union plant. He was a former member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Mount Union. The Pertas resided in Mount Union for 40 years. A funeral mass was celebrated April 2, at Holy Guardian Angels Church in Laureldale. George M. CARBAUGH, 72, of 601 16th St., Saxton, died at 7 p.m., Wednesday, March 27, 2002, at Altoona Hospital, Altoona, following a brief illness. Born Jan. 17, 1930, in Saxton, he was the son of the late George R. and Matilda (Metzgar) Carbaugh. He was married to Lilly A. Worthing Nov. 7, 1951, at Everett by the Rev. Zenft. Mrs. Carbaugh survives at home. One daughter, Mrs. George (Rhonda) Knode of Saxton survives. He is survived by three sisters, Eunice Nofsker of Altoona, Helen Hilemen of Hollidaysburg and Donna Isett of Saxton. Three brothers, Homer, Ralph and Emerson Carbaugh and a sister, Edna Williams, preceded him in death. Mr. Carbaugh was a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ, Saxton, where he was an elder emeritus. He attended Saxton-Liberty High School. He was a member of the Saxton VFW and the Saxton American Legion. He retired in 1987 after 30 years with R&R Vending Co., Saxton. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served with the 6th Army 79th Engineer Battalion in the Korean Conflict. He was awarded the National Defense Service medal, the Korean Service medal with three bronze stars and the U.S. Service medal.. Mr. Carbaugh enjoyed fishing and spending time with his dog. Full military honors will be accorded. Arthur N. ERNEST, 59, of HCR 61, Mill Creek, died at 10:45 p.m. Thursday, March 28, 2002, at the J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon, Following an extended illness. Mr. Ernest was born Dec. 18, 1942, in Mapleton Depot, the son of Norman C. Ernest, who preceded him in death, and Flora (DeMario) Ernest, who resides in Mapleton. He was united in marriage to Linda (King) Johnson June 21, 1986, in Huntingdon, and she survives at their home. He is survived by seven children: Charles E. Ernest, Mapleton; Joseph N. Ernest, Kistler; Carrie E. Ernest, University Park, State College; Kevin G. Johnson, Calvin; and Lesley J. Ramsey, Calvin. There are nine grandchildren surviving. also surviving are one sister and one brother: Donna L. Beeler, Huntingdon; and Richard N. Ernest, Mount Union. An infant brother, Ronald Lee Ernest preceded him in death. Mr. Ernest was of the Methodist faith. He Graduated from the Captain Jack High School, Class of 1960. He served in the U.S. Army at the Pentagon during the Vietnam War. He was employed as a Corrections Officer at SCI-Huntingdon for 15 years, retiring in November of 2000. Mr. Ernest was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also pitched for many years for the Mapleton baseball team in the County League. In addition, he played the keyboard and accordion, and did vocals for various local bands for 43 years. He was a member of the Mapleton Legion Color Guard when it was active. Interment will be made in the Mapleton IOOF Cemetery. Richard A. WATTS,78, of Calvin, died at 10:20 p.m. Thursday, March 28, 2002 at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon. Mr. Watts was born Sept. 6, 1923, the son of the late Charles and Florence (Somieski) Watts. He was married to Hazel V. Miller who preceded in death Feb. 2, 2001. He is survived by two daughters and two sons: Judith Watts Wanamaker, Kutztown; Beverly Jensen, Warrington; Stephen C. Watts, Easton; and Lawrence E. Watts, Raleigh, N.C. Six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren survive. Two sisters survive: Jean Herrmann, Naples, Fla.; and Evelyn Davidson, Chalfont. Two brothers, Harvey Watts, and George Watts, and a sister, Mary Barrett, preceded him in death. Mr. Watts had been an avid bowler. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy for 20 years. He retired in 1983 from Standard Press Steel, Jenkintown, after 20 years as a machinist. WENTZ, 65, of Hesston, died at 10:20 a.m. Thursday, March 28, 2002 at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon. Mr. Wentz was born Nov. 30, 1936, in Clearfield, the son of John F. and Laurena Mae (Baker) Wentz. He was married to Dolly I. (Norris) Wentz on June 15, 1962, at the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, Hesston, but the Rev. Norwood Fetrell. Mrs. Wentz survives at the Penn Twp. home where they have lived since 1971. Two sons and one daughter survive: Kirk D. Wentz, Hesston; Dale R. Wentz, Saxton, and Tammy D. (Wentz) Cassarly, Leesburg, Va. Seven grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death by one son, Roger R. Wentz Oct. 13, 2001. A sister, Doris P. Norris of James Creek, survives. A brother and a sister preceded in him in death: Edward F. Wentz, and Leona I. (Wentz) Norris. Mr. Wentz was a member of Jacob's Church in Hesston. He was a member of the Marklesburg Volunteer Fire Company; The Huntingdon County Volunteer Firemen's Association of Pa.; the Pennsylvania Association of Retired State Employees; and the Central District Volunteer Firemen's association of Pennsylvania. He attended the public schools of Huntingdon. Mr. Wentz retired from PenDOT in 1991 after 25 years of service. He previously worked at a Ford plant in New Jersey and Crownover's Dairy in Hightstown, N.J. He served in the United States Army from 1955-1958 and had a rank of Spec 4, having served in Alaska and Hawaii. Mr Wentz enjoyed flea marketing, wood working and traveling. Harold Gordon "Dope" SIPES, 71, of North Clear Ridge Road, Hustontown, died at 10:15 a.m. Friday, March 29, 2002, at the Fulton County Medical Center in McConnellsburg, following a series of complications from diabetes. Mr. Sipes was born July 3, 1931, in McConnellsburg, the son of the late Scott and Beatrice (Divens) Sipes. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Judy Ann (Frain) Sipes, and their three daughters: Rhonda Rene Hoffman, McConnellsburg; Tina Marie Souders, McConnellsburg, and Becky Sue Sipes, Hustontown. He is also survived by two sons and one daughter to a previous marriage: Mitchell Scott Sipes, McConnellsburg; Mark Wayne Sipes, McConnellsburg; and Laura Michele Foster, McConnellsburg. Eleven grandchildren survives. Also surivivng are two sisters and one brother: Marian Hunter, McConnellsburg; Dorothy Henry, Huntingdon; and Wayne Sipes, Chambersburg. He was preceded in death by a son, Michael G. Sipes; Two brothers Bruce Sipes and Daryl "Sketty" Sipes; and a sister, Betsy Lake. Mr. Sipes was of the Methodist faith. He was a member of the American Legion and VFW, McConnellsbuyrg. He served 20 years in the U.S. Air Force, serving in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Mr. Sipes was a cook in the service and continued to do so afterwards in various restaurants in the area. Most people knew "Dope" from his notorious card tricks and his jokes. He was an avid entertainer, fisherman and pool shooter, who will be greatly missed by everyone who know him. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 1, at the M.R. Brown Funeral Home, Hustontown, with Pastor Donald Bard officiating. Interment will be made in Union Cemetery, McConnellsburg. Janice Kay CAPPS, 45, of Grindstone Hill Road, Chambersburg, died at 3:25 p m. Friday, March 29, 2002, at Manorcare Health Services, Chambersburg. Born Nov. 28, 1956, in Chambersburg, she was the daughter of Ralph and Mary (Smith) Singer who survive in Orbisonia. Her companion of 11 years, Woodrow Harnish, survives at home. She is survived by a son, Allen James Capps, at home. One sister and two brothers survive: Cynthia Ritchie of Fannettsburg and Ralph L. Singer Jr. and Jeffrey A. Singer, both of McConnellsburg. Ms. Capps was of the Protestant faith. She was primarily a homemaker and volunteered at SCAPP in the Chambersburg area. Funeral services will be held at noon, Wednesday, April 3, at the Martin R. Brown Funeral Home, Orbisonia, with Pastor Len Smith officiating. Interment will be made in Salem Cemetery, Blairs Mills. Ellis Jesse WHITE, 70, of Hampton, Va., died Sunday, March 31, 2002. Born in Mapleton, he had been a Hampton resident since 1959. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Sherry L. White, at home and daughters, Mrs. David (Tamra L.) Priddy of Hampton and Mrs. Pete (Robyn D.) Yevak of Poquoson. Three grandchildren also survive. A sister, Emma Beecher, and brothers, Monroe, Gene and Bob White, survive in Pennsylvania. Mr. White retired as an aeronautical engineer at NASA Langley Research Center in 1987 after 33 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the Korean Conflict. A graveside service was conducted today, April 3, at Parklawn Memorial Park.
