Martin was born in Through Creek Valley, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, December 17, 1850. His father Joseph S. Martin died when S. J. was 12 years old and he made his home with a sister until more able to take care of himself which was in a few years. He then went to the lumber regions of Pennsylvania and followed his trade as plasterer and brick manufacturer until the western fever caught him along with many others. In 1881, he went to the Gunnison Country of Colorado where he has since made his home. He contracted rheumatism in the mountains and became so helpless a few weeks ago that he was taken to a lower altitude but to no avail. He died Sunday, January 2, 1910, aged 59 years, 16 days. He married Lucy Boalich in Osceola Mills, Pennsylvania on August 1, 1871 and to the union one child was born William L. Martin, editor of this paper. Mrs. Lucy Martin was drowned in East River, Gunnison County Colorado in June 1903. It is expected the funeral of Mr. Martin will be held Friday, p.m. at Crested Butte, Colorado and interred beside the body of the wife and grandchild in the family lot there. Of the family the son only survives. He leaves four brothers and one sister, Frank Martin of Bruning, Nebraska; Scott Martin of Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania; Adam Martin and Alfred Martin of Blair County, Pennsylvania; Mrs. Elizabeth Shaw of Fulton County, Pennsylvania. On sister, Mrs. Emmaline Leader, Everett Pennsylvania and father and mother are dead. He has two half-brothers and two half-sisters, Sherman Edwards of Belvidere, Nebraska, Decker Edwards of Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, Mrs. Anna Westbrook of Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, and Mrs. Alice Long of New Jersey. Unknown paper, but Willie Martin, his son was a newspaper man in Texas. Martin, who recently died at Hotchkiss, came here with the body of his father for burial on Saturday last and the remains were placed in the cemetery besides those of his mother. The funeral ceremonies were held in Hotchkiss and interment was made immediately upon the arrival of the train bringing the body here. Stephen J. Martin was born in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, December 17, 1850, died January 3, 1910 being aged 59 years and 17 days at death. He came to Gunnison County in 1881 in the rush to Irwin and has been a resident of the county ever since, being engaged at prospecting and ranching during this time. He came to Crested Butte with the starting of the town and assisted in the building of many of the first buildings constructed, the Elk Mountain House being one of which he assisted. For 17 years he had been engaged in dairying and ranching and to his death the ranch adjoining town. His wife, Lucy D. Martin, was drowned in East River six years ago.
