Prominent in Huntingdon County Affairs. He Died in Philadelphia. Charles Rufus McCarthy, formerly an associate judge of Huntingdon county, well known and highly esteemed in this section, and who was prominent in literary, religious and temperance circles, died Saturday at his home, 2027 North Mervine street Philadelphia, of heart disease. He has been in poor health for several years and his last illness was of four weeks duration. Mr. McCarthy was born at Airydale, Kishacoquillas Valley, August 25, 1818. His grandfather, John McCarthy, was a soldier in Washington's army at the time of the crossing of the Delaware river. His mother was a lineal descendant of Oliver Cromwell and was distantly related to James Buchanan. Most of his years were spent at Saltillo, Huntingdon county. He filled all the important offices of that town during his residence there. He was a justice of the peace at that place before his election to the bench in 1886. During his incumbency he refused all applications for liquor licenses, being sustained in rulings by the famous decision handed down by Judge Gordon. During his term on the bench he resided in Huntingdon. When his term expired he returned to Saltillo, where he resided until a few years ago when he, with his family, removed to Philadelphia. Mr. McCarthy was a voluminous writer and contributed freely to secular and church papers. Some years ago he wrote a series of reminiscences under the pen-name of "Graybeard," which attracted wide attention. He was the author of the book, "Children of the Alleghenies," which won a large circulation. He was a ruling elder of the Presbyterian church for forty years. Judge McCarthy is survived by two daughters, who reside in Philadelphia, and a number of relatives in this city. The funeral services will be held this morning by Rev. Dr. Davis, of Bethany church, of which Mr. McCarthy was a member. The interment will be in the family plot at Saltillo, Pa. Morning Tribune, Monday, January 29, 1900
