Dean McCarty, 88, of 2205 Acorn Circle, Huntingdon, formerly of Mapleton Depot, passed away at 11:45 p.m., on Monday, June 26, at the Huntingdon Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, after an extended illness. The funeral service was held on July 1 at the Robert D. Heath Funeral Home, Mount Union, with pastor Jon C. Hommer officiating. Interment was in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Glasgow. He was born on April 10, 1918, in Sproul, Blair County, the son of the late Cloyd A. and Ella (Keith) McCarty. Mr. McCarty married the former Mary Spencer of Mapleton in the Columbia Avenue Methodist Church . in Tyrone on June 11, 1943, with the Rev. W. W. Willard officiating. His wife survives, along with his sister, Jane McCarty Shaffer and husband, Clyde, of Finksburg, MD. Also surviving are a number of nieces and nephews. A sister, Marian McCarty and a brother, Gerald McCarty, preceded him in death. Mr. McCarty was a 50-year member of the Grace United Methodist Church, Mapleton. He was also a 50-year member of the F&AM Lodge #688, Mount Union; a member of the Harrisburg Consistory; and the Jaffa Shrine, Altoona. Mr. McCarty was an organizer and past president of the Mapleton Lions Club and a organizer of the Jack's Mountain Lions Club, as well as a lifetime member of the Mapleton Historical Society. In 1935, Dean was elected President of the Mount Union High School Class of 1936, an office he continued to hold until the last class reunion in 2005. He retired in 1973 as a Terminal Superintendent for the British Petroleum Company, formerly known as Standard Oil of Ohio, after 30 years of service.
