Newman Douglas Fairbanks Newman, 78, of East Catherine Street, Chambersburg, died at 4:25 p.m., March 24, at his home. Funeral services were held at Friday, March 28, at the Martin R. Brown Funeral Home, Orbisonia, with Rev. David Ford officiating. Interment will be made in Center Cemetery, Waterfall. He was born December 2, 1929 in Shore Valley, Huntingdon County, and he was the son of the late Earl D. and Hilda L. (Black) Newman. He was married to Mary Alice Miller on December 12, 1953 in Three Springs. Mrs. Newman survives at their home. Mr. Newman is survived by two sons, Neil D. Newman and wife Kathy of Saint Thomas and Todd D. Newman and wife Jennifer, Chambersburg and two sisters, Nina D. Ricker and husband Dwan of Mercersburg and Michele D. Fries and husband George III of Chambersburg. There are nine grandchildren: Tara Clopper, Travis Newman, Aaron Ricker, Zachary Ricker, Joshua Ricker, Crystal Ricker, Wesley Newman, Shelby Newman and Liam Fries. Five great grandchildren also survive. Mr. Newman is survived by a sister, Betty Isabelle Kough- Duncan, Saltillo and two brothers, Wallace R. Newman and Larry E. Newman, both of Chambersburg. One brother, Donald E. Newman and an infant brother, James Newman is deceased. A long time member of the Fifteenth Street United Methodist Church in Huntingdon, Mr. Newman more recently attended Criders United Brethren Church in Chambersburg. Mr. Newman had a strong work ethic. An employee of D. W. Miller Inc., Huntingdon, for over 35 years, Mr. Newman had retired as a carpenter in heavy road construction. Prior to that he had worked at Harbison-Walker Refractories in Mount Union. He was a member of Carpenters Union Local # 2274, Pittsburgh for over 50 years. Serving during the Korean Conflict from 1951-1953, Mr. Newman was stationed in Germany. He was a member of Madden-Wennick Post 518, American Legion, Orbisonia. A 1947 graduate of Saltillo High School, Mr. Newman played football and basketball. Mr. Newman especially liked to spend time at the "farm" in Shore Valley, Clay Twp., Huntingdon County. He enjoyed hunting and taking fishing trips with his family to Ocean City, MD and Ontario, Canada. He also enjoyed cooking, baking and traveling by train. Mr. Newman also raised and sold Christmas trees in the Chambersburg area since 1979. Memorial contributions may be made to Center United Methodist Church, PO Box 93, Waterfall, PA 16689.
