We encourage links to the state and county table of contents. ____________________________________________________________ Dr. Walter Orthner, 47, prominent Huntingdon Physician and active in the State Medical Society, died at his home, 806 Washington Street, at 8:12 o'clock last evening, April 21, 1948, after a short illness. Death was due to sarcoma of the mesentery. Dr. Orthner took ill on March 15 and was stricken while treating patients in his office the following day. He was rushed to the J. C. Blair Memorial Hospital where he later had an operation. On Sunday, April 11, he was released from the hospital and returned to his home. On September 1, 1931, after completing his internship at the Bryn Mawr Hospital, Dr. Orthner opened his office for the practice of medicine in Huntingdon. He soon became active in community and church affairs and took a prominent place in the life of the town. Dr. Orthner received his bachelor of arts degree from the University of Rochester and was awarded his medical degree by Temple University in 1930. He was deeply interested in the work of the Medical Society of the State of Pennsylvania and was a member of the board of trustees and councilor for that group. He was a past president of the Huntingdon County Medical Society and a fellow of the American Medical Association. He was president of the Huntingdon Board of Health at the time of his death. He was also a member of the Huntingdon Kiwanis Club. He was a member of the staff of the J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital and served one term as president of the group. Dr. Orthner was active in the First Baptist Church of Huntingdon and served the congregation as a deacon. The deceased was born on March 4, 1901, near Dallas, Texas, a son of Mrs. Rudolph Orthner and the late Mr. Orthner. On October 31, 1931, at Philadelphia, he was united in marriage to Miss Lena Katherine Strohacker of Philadelphia. In addition to his wife and mother he is survived by the following brothers and sisters: Joseph Orthner of Coral Gables, Fla.; Frank Orthner of Brooklyn, New York; Carl Orthner of Burlington, Iowa; Philip Orthner of Denton, Mich.; Mrs. Victoria Preuss of Forest Park, Ill., and Coral Gables, Fla., and Adelaide Orthner, of Coral Gables, Fla. The mother, Mrs. Rudolph Orthner is also a resident of Coral Gables. Funeral services will be held on Saturday afternoon at 4 o'clock at the First Baptist Church. The Rev. Tobias F. Henry and the Rev. H.D. McKeehan will officiate and interment will be made in Riverview Cemetery. Friends may call at Brown's funeral home after 7:30 this evening and until 11 o'clock Saturday morning when the body will be taken to the church where it may be viewed until the hour of the service. It was Dr. Orthner's request that no flowers be sent to his funeral. Instead, he suggested that any funds from his friends for flowers be used to purchase some piece of equipment for the J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital.
