Chal Port, state fire marshal, and a former well known officer of the Pennsy's Middle division police force, died on Saturday in the Presbyterian hospital in Philadelphia, where he had been taken earlier in the week. Mr. Port's illness began several months ago. Last winter he spent some time in Florida, but his health gave way again early in the summer and he went to his summer home along the Juniata until he became so ill that he was taken to the Philadelphia hospital on last Sunday, where it was found he was suffering from influenza from which pneumonia developed which was the cause of death. G. Chal Port was born in Huntingdon, Pa., Nov. 25, 1873, being a member of one of the oldest and most prominent families in that county. He received his education in the public schools of his native town and at State college. Upon the death of his father in 1895, he succeeded him in the butchering business and was thus engaged until 1905. From 1907 to 1916 he was connected with the police department of the Middle division of the Pennsylvania railroad, serving as captain of police, with headquarters in Altoona, throughout this period. Previously he served as a member of the Huntingdon school board, also as coroner and sheriff of his county. He was prominent in Republican politics and served as delegate to state conventions as a member of the state committee and as chairman of the county committee. A warm personal and political friend of Governor Brumbaugh he was appointed by him to the office of state fire marshal on June 23, 1916, and held that office until his death.
