Mt. Union, January 25. - A fatal coasting accident occurred at Aughwick's Cross Roads, four miles from Mt. Union, late this afternoon when Merle Reck, aged 11, dashed into the rear end of A. S. Welch's auto, the former living but a short time after the accident. Mr. Welch was driving to Germany valley, accompanied by his niece, Miss Gaynelle Gifford. The boys were coasting down the road leading from the Aughwick school house. The auto was running slowly and the boys had acquired considerable momentum as they came down the hill. It is thought that they struck the rear wheel, as both had cuts on the head that may have been made by chains. Mr. Welch at once stopped the car and with the aid of the teacher, Miss Harper, and some of the older pupils, gathered up the injured boys and took them to their homes. Dr. Samuel Gregory was called, but shortly after he arrived Merle Reck died. The other boy is not seriously hurt and his early recovery is expected. The boy who died was a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Reck. Altoona Mirror, Altoona, Pa., Friday Morning, January 26, 1917
