Isabella S. BOWSER, 88, a resident of Westminster Woods, Huntingdon,
formerly of Saxton, died Sunday, Sept. 3, 2000, at 8:11 a.m., at
Westminster Woods, following an extended illness. Born Nov. 5, 1911, in
Leeds, England, she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Isabella
(Bain) Riddler. She was united in marriage to Thomas C. Bowser April 30,
1939, in Philadelphia. He preceded her in death in 1953. Surviving are
the following children: Mrs. Donald (Mary B.) Mohr, Bedford; Mrs.
Michael (Tomasena) Ross, Wadsworth, Ohio; and Thomas C. Bowser, Hesston.
One stepdaughter, Patricia Brunkow, of Tampa, Fla. survives. There are
six grandchildren, four great-grandchil- dren, three step-grandchildren
and three step-great-grandchildren. Two brothers, Robert Riddler of St.
Charles, Mo., and Alexander Riddler of St. Louis, Mo., survive. Two
grandchildren preceded her in death. Mrs. Bowser was a member of the
Trinity United Church of Christ, Saxton, where she served on the
consistory, was an elder of the church and was active in the MITE
Society. A 1936 graduate of Conemaugh Memorial Hospital, she was a
registered nurse. She owned and operated Bowser.'s Rexall Drug Store
until her retirement in 1974. She was a member of the Federation of
Women's Club, Saxton Civic Club, Broad Top Area Chamber of Commerce and
Broad Top Senior Citizens. She also volunteered at the Saxton Community
Library and the Homewood Retirement Center in Martinsburg. Memorial
services will be held Sunday, Sept. 10, at 10:40 a.m., in conjunction
with memorial services at the Trinity United Church of Christ in Saxton,
with Pastor Charles Davis leading the service. Memorial contributions
may be made to the Trinity United Church of Christ, Saxton, or the
Saxton Community Library. Funeral arrangements are under the direction
of the D. Ronald Long Funeral Chapel, Saxton. 

Mary Elda WORTHING, 95, of P.O. Box 75, Allensville, died Saturday,
Sept. 2, 2000, at 6:30 a.m., at her home, following an extended illness.
Born Jan., 24, 1905, in Martinsburg, she was a daughter of the late
Calvin and Mary (Law) Smith. She was united in marriage to Cloyd L.
Worthing Nov. 18, 1922, in Hollidaysburg. He preceded her in death Oct.
19, 1982. Surviving are the following children: Mrs. David (Marjorie)
Ketner, Allensville; Doris Fittery, Huntingdon; Ralph Worthing,
Fredericksburg; and Daniel Worthing, Mifflintown. There are 12
grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and 14 great-great-grandchildren.
One daughter, Grace Romaine Worthing, preceded her in death. Mrs.
Worthing was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was
a member of the Raven Run Church of the Brethren, Saxton. She was
primarily a homemaker and enjoyed crocheting and embroidery work.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 6, at 11 a.m., at the
Raven Run Church of the Brethren, with Pastor John Keefer and Pastor Dan
Hammel officiating. Interment will be made at St. Luke's Cemetery,
Saxton, R.D. 

Blanche V. O'HARA, 66, of R.D. 3, Box 99A, Huntingdon, died Monday,
Sept. 4, 2000, at 10:30 a.m., at the Altoona Hospital, Altoona. Born
March 1, 1934, in Ridley Park, she was the daughter of the late Louis E.
and Elizabeth (Hamilton) Strimel. She was united in marriage to Joseph
D. O'Hara, who survives at home. Also surviving are two daughters and a
stepdaughter: Anna B. Pruitt, Glenolden; Shariann B. O'Hara, Huntingdon,
R.D. 3; and Ellen E. Diamond, Wellington, Fla. There are five
grandchildren. Two sons, Donald G. Hetzner and David P. Hetzner,
preceded her in death. Two brothers and two sisters survive: Ronald
Strimel and George Strimel, both of Huntingdon, Elva Bort of Glenolden,
and Betty Stryker of Orlando, Fla. Mrs. O'Hara was a member of the
Woodcock Valley Bible Church, James Creek, R.D. 1. She was a homemaker.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Sept. 7, at noon, at the
Woodcock Valley Bible Church, James Creek, R.D. 1, with the Rev. George
C. "Buddy" Baird officiating. Interment will be made in the Whitemarsh
Memorial Park, Ambler, Friday, Sept. 8, at 1 p.m. Memorial contributions
may be made to the Woodcock Valley Bible Church, R.D. 1, Box 1025, James
Creek, Pa. 16657. 

Dorothy Mae WAGNER, 72, of Warren, Mich., died Sept. 2, 2000, at St.
John's Oakland, Madison Heights, Mich. Born Oct. 8, 1927, in Lewistown,
she was preceded in death by her husband, William F. Wagner June 20,
1983. Surviving are eight children: Mrs. Howard (Janet) Rowe, Madison
Heights, Mich.; Linda Wagner, Warren, Mich.; Madia Wanger, Warren Mich.;
Mrs. John (Tina) Sutherland, Ohio; Mrs. Glen (Louise) Pass, Gurnee,
Ill.; Sandy Kennedy, Tennessee; Charles Wagner, Tampa, Fla.; and Harold
Wagner, Tennessee. There are 12 grandchildren and nine
great-grandchildren. One brother and two sisters survive: Mary Barger
and Peggy Grove, both of Mount Union, and Richard Mohler, Chambersburg.
One sister, Glayds Aurand died in 1990, and a brother, Charles Mohler,
died in 1993. Mrs. Wagner was employed for 28 years as a waitress at
Friar's Kitchen and Bakery in Warren, Mich. Funeral services will be
held Thursday, Sept. 7, at 11 a.m., at the Ashley-Scott Funeral Home,
Hazel Park, Mich. Interment will be made in the Christian Memorial
Cultural Center in Rochester Hills, Mich. 

Jerry D. BARD, 75, of P.O. Box 45, Shirleysburg, died unexpectedly at
1:05 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital,
Huntingdon. Born Aug. 25, 1925, in Aughwick Mills, Shirley Township,
Huntingdon County, he was the son of the late Lawrence M. and Irene C.
(Cumming) Bard. He is survived by four siblings: Lawrence N. Bard of
Carlisle, Mrs. George (Kay) McMonigal of Steelton, Barry M. "Mike" Bard
of Shirleysburg and Mrs. Fred (Jean) Leonard of Rockhhill Furnace. Mr.
Bard was of the Protestant faith. He attended Blain Vocational High
School in Perry County and then apprenticed in watch and clockmaking
shops in Windber and Hollidaysburg to become an horologist (watchmaker).
He was an avid hunter and enjoyed playing cards and horse racing. He was
a member of the Orbisonia-Rockhill Sportsmen's Association. The,funeral
service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, at the Robert D.
Heath Funeral Home, Mount Union, with the Rev. Raymond Hill officiating.
Interment will be made in the Germany Valley Cemetery, Shirleysburg,
R.R. 1. 

Louise M. JONES, 70, of 6 Water St., Robertsdale, died Sept. 7, 2000, at
J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon. Born Nov. 4, 1929, in
Robertsdale, she was the daughter of the late Howard and Sara (Horton)
Brown. She was united in marriage to James Jones March 26, 1955, in
Headland, Ala. Mr. Jones survives at home, along with two children:
Utoka Jones of Robertsdale and Tina Russell of Saxton. There are three
grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Two siblings, Cloma Baker of
South Mountain and Dorothy Stapleton of Altoona, survive. Two sisters
and ten brothers preceded her in death. Mrs. Jones was a 1947 graduate
of the Robertsdale High School. She worked for the former Robertsdale
Company Store and Robertsdale Hotel and most recently for the Quality
Manufacturing Co. in Saxton. Her hobbies included sewing, reading and
crossword puzzles. Funeral services will be held Sunday, Sept. 10, at 2
p.m., at the Curtis A. Heath Funeral Home, Broad Top, with Pastor Donald
Simmons officiating. Interment will be made in the IOOF Cemetery, Broad
Top. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the RW&BT
Fire Company. 

Robert "Zute" Clay SHONTZ, 68, of 160 Thomas Lane, Pleasant Gap, died at
8:16 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, at Centre Community Hospital in State
College. He died following a serious illness. Born Aug. 10, 1932, in
Mount Union, he was the son of the late Charles Franklin and Ida Pearl
(Snow) Shontz. He was united in marriage to Sharon Duck Sept. 19, 1970,
in Maryland. She survives at home, along with the following children:
Tammy Lee Shontz and Robert C. M. Shontz, both of Pleasant Gap. There
are two grandchildren. One sister and two brothers survive: Jean Shoop
of Huntingdon, Charles Richard Shontz of York and Larry Lee Shontz of
Mount Union. Mr. Shontz was of the Roman Catholic faith. He attended the
Mount Union High School and was a veteran of the Korean War. He was also
a member of the Sons of Italy Lodge in Mount Union. During his life he
had worked at various construction jobs and was a bus driver. Funeral
services will be private and there will be no viewing or visitation. 

Hazel G. DEAN, 89, a resident of Beverly Healthcare- William Penn,
Lewistown, formerly of Kish Apartments, Lewistown, died at 1:32 a.m.
Friday, Sept. 8, 2000, at Lewistown Hospital. Born Oct. 24, 1910, in
Altoona, she was the daughter of the late George and Delia (Stine)
Wilson. She was united in marriage to Charles A. Dean, who preceded her
in death in 1972. Surviving are four children: Betty Chapman, Amherst,
Ohio; Charles A. Dean Jr., Terrace Boulevard, Lewistown; George W. Dean,
Fairview, Lewistown; and Larry E. Dean, West Fifth St., Lewistown. There
are ten grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. An infant son, Ralph
Dean and one granddaughter, Teresa Simpson, preceded her in death. One
sister, Madaline Hook of Bumham survives. Two brothers and one sister
preceded her in death. Early in her life, Mrs. Dean was employed by
American Viscose. She later worked for Arrow Division of Cluett-Peabody
and Co. for 13 years. She was a member of the Evangel Baptist Church,
Brooklyn Hose Company Ladies Auxiliary, Women of the Moose and Granville
Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary. Funeral services will be held Tuesday,
Sept. 12, at 1 p,.m., at the Hoenstine Funeral Home, Lewistown, with the
Rev. Dr. Gregory K. Tyree officiating. Interment will be made in the
Juniata Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to Evangel
Baptist Church, 375 W. Fifth St., Lewistown, Pa. 17044. 

Ruth E. SMITH, 88, formerly of Three Springs, died at 1:25 p.m.
Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, at Woodland Retirement Center, Orbisonia. Born
Dec. 26, 1911, in Shirley Township, Huntingdon County, she was a
daughter of the late Philip and Rena (Secrist) Whitsel. She was married
to Warren P. Smith Oct. 25, 1930, in McVeytown. Mr. Smith preceded her
in death March 10, 1997. Surviving are the following children: Mildred
Brown, Three Springs; Mrs. George (Evadene) Wilbur, Mapleton, R.D.; H.
Eugene Smith and Daryl P. Smith, both of Three Springs; Mrs. James
(Sandra) Talbot, Saltillo; Robert M. Smith and Mrs. Dale (Debra) Shope,
Three Springs. One sister, Thelma Murphy of Shade Gap, survives, along
with a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mrs. Smith was
preceded in death by two daughters, one son, one grandchild, four
sisters and three brothers. She was a member of the Calvary Independent
Baptist Church, Saitillo. She was a homemaker. Funeral services will be
held at 3 p.m. Monday, Sept. 11, at the Martin R. Brown Funeral Home,
Orbisonia, with Pastor Thomas Maurer officiating. Interment will be made
in the Cornelius Chapel Cemetery, Mapleton, R.D. 

Margaret R. "Peg GAFF, 82, a resident of Brookline Manor Nursing Home,
Mifflintown, R.R. 1, formerly of the Mount Union area, died at 5:40 a.m.
Sunday, Sept. 10, 2000, at the nursing home. Born April 28, 1918, in
Newton Hamilton, she was the daughter of the late David and Clara
(Stengle) Beatty. She was united in marriage to Charles W. Gaff Aug. 7,
1936, in Hagerstown, Md. Her husband preceded her in death June 8, 1969.
Surviving are three children: Bernard Gaff and John Gaff, both of
Shelocta, and Darlene Park of McAlisterville, R.D. 2. There are ten
grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. The following half-brothers
and half-sisters also survive: Louelia Ashcraft, Massilon, Ohio; Paul
Pollock, Hershey; Ernest Pollock, McVeytown; and Beulah Price,
Lewistown. Mrs. Gaff was preceded in death by a son, Richard Gaff, and a
sister and a brother, Bertha Knable and Roy Beatty. She attended the
Beech Run School at Mapleton, R.D. 1. She was.formerly employed by Robin
Footwear, L. Greif Brothers Manufacturing, and the Harbison-Walker
Refractories, all of Mount Union. She very much enjoyed hunting and
fishing. She was a member of the Beech Run Church of the Brethren,
Mapleton, R.D. 1. Graveside services Will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday,
Sept. 12, at the Bowman's Chapel Cemetery, Mapleton, R.D. 1, with the
Rev. Charlie Rhodes officiating. Interment will follow in Bowman's
Chapel Cemetery. There will be no viewing or visitation. Funeral
arrangements are under the direction of the Robert D. Heath Funeral
Home, Mount Union. 

Isaac N. "Ike" HORTON, 73, of Dudley, died Sept. 8, 2000, at Bon Secour
Holy Family Hospital, Altoona. Born March 6, 1927, in Dudley, he was the
son of the late Clair I. and Pearl (Taylor) Horton. He was united in
marriage to Madeline E. Foore April 7, 1951, in Maryland. She preceded
him in death April 17, 1984. Surviving are the following children: Kim
Didyk, Robertsdale; Clair I. Horton, Eagle Foundry; Robert E. Horton,
Riddlesburg; and Blaine N. Horton, also of Riddlesburg. There are seven
grandchildren. One son, Jeffery A. Horton, preceded him in death. Also
surviving are four sisters and two brothers: Edna Weaverling, Saxton;
Emily Biggs, Florida; Jeanie Barnett, Betty Koplets, Howard Horton and
Robert Horton, all of Alliquippa. A graduate of Saxton-Liberty High
School, he attended Stevens Trade School until entering the United
States Air Force in 1945. He was a member of the Dudley United Methodist
Church and American Legion Watson and Black Post No. 126. He was
employed as a mechanic at Letterkenny Army Depot for 33 years. His
hobbies included hunting and fishing. Funeral services will be held
Tuesday, Sept. 12, at 10 a.m., at the Curtis A. Heath Funeral Home,
Broad Top, with Pastor Dave Bailey officiating. Interment will be made
in the Dudley Protestant Cemetery, where full military honors will be
accorded. 

Ruby J. KIFER, 77, of 8543 Raystown Rd., Saxton, died Friday, Sept. 8,
2000, at 7:15 p.m., at the Altoona Hospital Center for Nursing Care,
following an extended illness. Born Oct. 21 1922, in Saxton, R.D., she
was the daughter of the late Harry and Merla (Long) Kifer. She is
survived by a son, Charles "Reggie" Kifer of Saxton; a sister, Grace
Capwell of Saxton; and a brother, the Rev. Earl E. Kifer of Dallas,
Texas. One sister, Edith Mosebey, and three brothers, Charles, Carl and
Howard, preceded her in death. Ms. Kifer was a member of the Raystown
Brethren Church. She was also a member of the Saxton Rebekah Lodge and
the Saxton Chapter No. 161 of the Order of the Eastern Star. For 20,
years she was a group leader at Scampers Manufacturing and she retired
in 1984, after 19 years of service at the Hedstrom Plant in Bedford.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Sept. 12, at 1 p.m., at the D.
Ronald Long Funeral Chapel, Saxton, with Pastor Charles Davis and Pastor
Rockne Shaal officiating. Interment will be made in the Yellow Creek
Cemetery, Hopewell, R.D. 

David. H. QUERRY, 81, formerly of Mill Creek, died Saturday, Sept. 9,
2000, at 3:47 p.m., at Woodland Retirement Center, Orbisonia. Born Aug.
14, 1919, in Calvin, he was the son of the late Miles M. and Katherine
E. (Slagle) Querry. Surviving are two sisters, Kathryn V. Hogg of
Lancaster and Elsie L. McClain of Calvin. Four brothers, Charles,
Wilbur, Ralph and Melvin, preceded him in death. A number of nieces and
nephews survive. Mr. Querry was of the Protestant faith. He was employed
as a driver for American Truck Company of Ohio, retiring in January
1985. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Sept. 12, at 1 p.m., at the
Robert E. Peters Funeral Home, Huntingdon, with the Rev. Doyle H.
Klinger Jr. officiating. Interment will be made in the Bowman's Chapel
Cemetery, Mapleton, R.D. 1. 

Laura M. (Stearns) MILLIKEN, 77, of Corson Hall, Cornwall Manor,
Cornwall, formerly of Ephrata, died Friday, Sept. 8, 2000, in the Good
Samaritan Hospital in Lebanon, following a brief illness. Born in
Westbrook, Maine, she was the daughter of the late Albert E. and Ruth
(Rumery) Stearns. She was united in marriage to the Rev. Gerald C.
Milliken and the couple would have celebrated their 60th wedding
anniversary in November. Surviving, along with her husband, are three
sons and three daughters: Pastor Charles C. Milliken, Franklintown; Mark
G. Milliken, Gainesville, Fla.; Timothy D. Milliken, Maiden, Mass.; the
Rev. Mrs. Thomas W Sr. (Verna) Cahill, McConnellstown; Karen J.
Milliken, Lancaster; and Mrs. Michael D. (Deborah) Thompson, Covington,
Ind. There are 19 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. One brother
and one sister, Richard Stearns of Lyman, Maine, and Mrs. Boyd (Elsie)
Cooley of Notthingham, N.H., survive. One brother, Stanley Stearns, and
two grandsons preceded her in death. A homemaker, Mrs. Milliken was a
member of the First United Methodist Church of Ephrata, where she sang
in the choir and was a member of the Women's Group of the church. Her
hobbies included knitting and crocheting. She was a fan of the musician
Bill Gaither and had served as volunteer for the American Heart
Association. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Sept. 12, at 11
a.m., at the Stradling Funeral Home, Inc., 201 N. Church Ave., Ephrata,
with Chaplain William H. Garrett officiating. Interment will be made in
the Memory Gardens Memorial Cemetery, East Cocalico Township. 

William D. JONES, 80, of 504 Branch St., Saxton, died Sunday, Sept. 10,
2000, at 2:58 a.m., at his home, following an extended illness. Born
Jan. 11, 1920, in Cooks, he was the son of the late William and Irene
(Williams) Jones. He@ as united in marriage to Pauline E. "Sally"
Morningstar Oct. 4, 1941, in Winchester, Va. She preceded him in death
Jan. 25, 1999. Surviving are the following siblings: Jack Jones, Broad
Top City; Glenn Jones, Flinstone, Md.; Jesse Jones, Fairless Hills;
Rachel Stevenson, Dudley; Hazel Leavalle and Martha Rinehart, both of
Broad Top City. Several nieces and nephews survive. Two brothers and two
sisters, Ralph and Ben Jones and Esther and Laura Jones, preceded him in
death. Mr. Jones was a member of the First Church of God in Saxton. He
was a member of the Broad Top Area Senior Citizens; Portage Lodge No.
220, F&AM; Broad Top Old-timers Baseball Association; Saxton American
Legion Post No. 169, and Saxton VFW Post. No. 4129. A veteran of World
War II, he served in the U.S. Army and received the Purple Heart,
Presidential Unit Citation and the Bronze Star. He was a miner, working
for the Shannon Coal Co. in Dudley and was later a master mechanic
working with heavy equipment at Central Pennsylvania Construction Co. in
Hazelton. He retired in 1980 after 30 years of service. He enjoyed
hunting and fishing and was an avid golfer. Funeral services will be
held Wednesday, Sept. 13, at 2 p.m., at the D. Ronald Long Funeral
Chapel, Saxton, with Pastor John Robinson officiating. Interment will be
made in the IOOF Cemetery, Broad Top City, with full military honors. 

Burgess Adam SMITH, M.D., 74, of 3337 Cold Springs Rd., Huntingdon, died
Sunday, Sept. 10, 2000, at his residence. He had been in failing health;
however his death was unexpected. Born Sept. 16, 1925, in Hamburg, Berks
County, he was the son of the late Edward and Mary (Wagner) Smith. He
married Gene Anthony Aug. 16, 1947, at Zion Union Blue Mountain Church,
Strausstown, with the Rev. Frank W. Ruth officiating. Surviving are four
children: Leslie (Smith) Boettcher, West Chester Ohio; Burgess Anthony
Smith, Huntingdon; Craig Edward Smith, Smithfield Township, Huntingdon;
and Valerie Gene (Smith) Hirsch, Chevy Chase, Md. There are six
grandchildren. Two sisters and one brother survive: Marilyn (Smith)
Anthony, Strausstown; Louise (Smith) Long, Wyomissing; and the Hon.
Calvin Smith, Wernersville. He was preceded in death by two brothers and
a sister: Edward Gerald Smith, Charles Smith and Pauline Smith. Dr.
Smith was a member of the Abbey Reformed United Church of Christ,
Huntingdon. He belonged to the American Medical Association, was a
fellow in the American College of Surgeons and served as president of
the Diamond Valley Social Club. He practiced medicine in Lehighton and
later general surgery in Huntingdon until his retirement in 1985. Dr.
Smith attended public schools in Hamburg and graduated from Hamburg High
School in 1943. In 1946, he graduated from Franklin & Marshall College
in the V-12 program and in 1949 he completed Jefferson Medical College.
Between 1949-1950, he performed his internship at Reading Hospital and
served his residence in surgery at Jefferson Medical College between
1952- 1954, and at Sacred Heart Hospital in Allentown from 1955-1956.
From 1944 until 1946, he served with the U.S. Navy V- 12 program and as
a medical corpsman in the American Theatre of Operations during World
War II. He entered the U.S. Army in 1949 during the Korean Conflict and
served with MASH No. 8076, receiving the Korean Service Medal with Five
Bronze Stars, the Bronze Star Medal, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the
Meritorious Unit Commendation, and attained the rank of captain. In
1949, he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha Honorary Medical Fraternity.
During his surgical residency, he performed research on the heart-lung
machine at Jefferson Medical College under Dr. Gibbons. Dr. Smith has
been a resident of Huntingdon County since 1959 and had lived at his
current residence since 1985. A memorial service will be held at the
Abbey Reformed United Church of Christ, Sixth and Mifflin streets,
Huntingdon, Thursday, Sept. 14, at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Gary H. Marcy
officiating. Interment will be made in the Strausstown Union Cemetery,
Upper Tulpehocken Township, Berks County. 

Esther (Reihart) COFFMAN, 85, of 828 Juniata Ave., Smithfield,
Huntingdon, died Sunday, Sept. 10, 2000, at 7:25 p.m., at J.C. Blair
Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon. She had been in failing health for the
past several months. Born Sept. 14, 1914, in Madddensville, she was the
daughter of the late Martin and Mae (Shore) Reihart. She was united in
marriage to Jack P. Coffman July 31, 1940, in Winchester, Va. Mr.
Coffman survives at their Smithfield residence, along with a son, Joseph
R. Coffman of Huntingdon. There are three grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Jack P. Coffman
Jr. May 15, 1969, three brothers, Newton, George, and David Reihart, and
two sisters, Pearle Reihart and Clara Ramsey. Mrs. Coffman was a member

of the American Red Cross, Huntingdon, and was active with the local
work of child evangelism. Mrs. Coffman graduated from Huntingdon High
School in 1932 and then from Huntingdon Nursing School in 1935. For a
number of years she was employed as a registered nurse and also
volunteered for many years with the American Red Cross. Mrs. Coffman had
lived at her Smithfield residence since her marriage in 1940. Funeral
services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13, at the Calvary
Independent Baptist Church, 300 Standing Stone Ave., Huntingdon, with
the Rev. Steven J. Von Bokern officiating and the Rev. John Hodges
assisting. Interment will be made in the Walnut Grove Cemetery, Three
Springs. 

Robert D. PRICE, 64, of Bowser's Personal Care Home, Alexandria,
formerly of Mount Union, died at 1:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 10, 2000, at
J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon. He died following an extended
illness. Born Oct. 14, 1935, in Mount Union, he was the son of the late
Robert and Mary (Kern) Price. Mr. Price attended the Christian and
Missionary Alliance Church. He loved hunting and fishing. For several
years he worked at the Huntingdon County Developmental Workshop.
Graveside services were held Monday, Sept. 11, at the Haven Rest
Memorial Park, Shirleysburg, R.R. 1, with the Rev. Steve Motter
officiating. 

Ivan D. PEACHEY, 67, of 2750 Route 655, Belleville, died at 5:02 a.m.
Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, at Lewistown Hospital. Born Nov. 17, 1932, in
Reedsville, he was a son of the late John E. and Katie (Spicher)
Peachey. His wife, Ruth Peachey, whom he married May 15, 1954, survives.
Also surviving are the following children: Kathy L. Beimborn, West Bend,
Wis.; Betty A. Ross, Sunnyvale, Calif.; John E. Peachey, Lewistown;
Diane M. Yoder, Hayward, Wis.; and Shirley K. Peachey and Karen J.
Byler, both of Belleville. There are 18 grandchildren. Also surviving
are several siblings: Twins Raymond S. Peachey, Rebecca S. Yoder, David
S. Peachey, Marian R. Peachey and John B. Peachey, all of Belleville;
Sarah A. Yoder, McVeytown; and twin brother, Irwin J. Peachey,
Belleville. Mr. Peachey was a farmer, retiring in 1996. He was also a
van driver for the Amish. He was a member of the Allensville Mennonite
Church, where he was in the Bereans Sunday School class and taught
Sunday School. He had also served as a church elder and a coordinator
for the Mennonite Disaster Service. He was on the board of directors for
Agway and served as president for the Farmers Milk Haulers for a number
of years. He enjoyed traveling and resided in Florida in the winter. A
funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Allensville
Mennonite Church, with the Rev. Philip Barr and the Rev. Max Zook
officiating. Interment will be made in Locust Grove Cemetery. 

Alda M. BEATTY, 76. of 326 Stonegate Court, Chambersburg, died at 7:30
a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2000, at the Shook Nursing Home in
Chambersburg. She had been in failing health. Born June 24, 1924, in
Shirley Township, Huntingdon County, she was the daughter of the late
Fred S. and Mary Jane (Hardy) Beatty. She is survived by a sister, Mrs.
Davis (Opal) Secrest of Mount Union, R.D. 1, and two nephews. One
sister, Anna Mae Elsmere, and a niece, Joan Thomas, preceded her in
death. Mrs. Beatty was of the Brethren faith. A 1942 graduate of Mount
Union High School, she retired in 1974 as a computer specialist in the
logistical support group at Letterkenny Army Depot in Chambersburg. She
had previously worked for the federal government at the Automotive Tank
Command in Detroit, Mich. Private funeral services will be held at the
Robert D. Heath Funeral Home in Mount Union, with the Rev. Rich Morris
officiating. Interment will be made in the Mount Union Cemetery. 

Edna M. Filson BRANNIGAN, 94, of Hesston, R.D. 1, died Wednesday, Sept.
13, 2000, at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon. Born April 17,
1906, in Altoona, she was the daughter of the late John C. and Laura
(Robinson) Hanley. She was first married to James E. Filson, who
preceded her in death Jan. 6, 1946. She then married Thomas L.
Branningan, who died Sept. 27, 1969. Surviving are a son, James A.
Filson of Hesston, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
One daughter, Jane Delores Filson, and in 1951 a grandson, James Barry
Filson, preceded her in death. Mrs. Filson Brannigan was a member of the
Llyswen United Methodist Church, Altoona. She was the co-owner of
Filson's Meat Market, formerly on Union Avenue and 26th Street, and she
also was a secretary for a Mutual of Omaha Insurance Agency in St.
Petersburg, Fla. A 1924 graduate of Altoona High School, she received
many awards for her volunteer work for the American Cancer Society in
St. Petersburg, Fla. She enjoyed painting, sewing and gardening. A
graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 15, at Alto
Reste Park Cemetery, by the Rev. Myrna Speck. Interment will follow. 

James Henry RANKIN, 74, of Hermiston, Ore., died Tuesday, Sept. 12,
2000, at the Good Samaritan Center in Hermiston. Born May 29, 1926, in
Rockhill, he was the son of the late Lewis and Maude (Keith) Rankin. He
is survived by his wife, Shirley of Hermiston; two sons, Russell Rankin
of Baker City, Ore., and Rick Rankin of Medford, Ore., and four
grandchildren. Mr. Rankin was a longtime resident of Hermiston since
1976. He worked in Civil Service for the Department of the Army as an
ammunition inspector for 32 years, retiring in 1981. He was a veteran of
World War II, serving in the Army Air Corp as a tail gunner in a B-17.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Graveside services will be held Friday,
Sept. 15, at 9:30 a.m. at the Hermiston Cemetery. 

Oliver Merle AFRICA, 80, of 2380 Tasso Street, Palo Alto, Calif.
formerly of Huntingdon, died. at 3 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000 at
Stanford University Hospital in California. He had been in failing
health for several weeks. Born in Huntingdon Aug. 10, 1920, he was the
son of Oliver S. and Margaret (Moore) Africa Sullebarger. His father
preceded him in death in 1922. He was married to Anna Elizabeth "Betty"
Frankhouser, formerly of Mount Union June 17, 1944 at the First United
Methodist Church in Mount Union. He is survived in addition to his wife
by two children, Mrs. Frank (Sharon) Krhoun of Concord, Calif., and Mrs.
Terry (Catherine) Blair Olson of Campbell, Calif. Additionally, he is
survived by three grandchildren, all of California. Mr. Africa was a
member of the First United Methodist Church of Palo Alto. He served in
the Naval Reserves during World War II as a flight engineer flying
troops and supplies for Pan American World Airways. He was employed by
Pan American for 42 years until his retirement in 1982. He was a member
and past master of Albion Naval Masonic Lodge in New York City; and a
dual member of Palo Alto Roller Lodge. He was also a member of Scottish
Rite and past president of the North County Scottish Rite Association.
Additionally, he was a member of Islam Shrine and member and past patron
of the Palo Alto chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. A memorial
service including both a Masonic and Eastern Star service will be held
on Sept. 17, in Palo Alto, with private interment on Sept. 18. 

Iva Viola (Clark) COGAN, 83, of Aliquippa, died Saturday, Sept. 2, 2000,
in the Beaver Medical Center. Born March 19, 1917, in Saxton, she was
the daughter of the late Samuel and Edith (Green) Clark. She was
preceded in death by her husband, Paul Q. Cogan. Surviving are three
children: Mrs. John (Kay) Symons, Sewickly; Dan Cogan, Painesville,
Ohio;. and the Rev. John Cogan, Portage. There are 12 grandchildren and
11 great-grandchildren. One sister, Grace Clark of Saxton survives,
along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by four
brothers and four sisters: Arthur Batzel, Edgar, John and Fred Clark,
Emma Trimer, Elizabeth Gray, Jane Berry and Eva Clark. Mrs. Cogan was an
active member of the Crestmont Alliance Church, where she was an
original choir member and a member of the Alliance Women. She was
well-known for her hospitality in the church and in her home and
entertained missionaries and ministers who visited the area. Mrs. Cogan
especially enjoyed cooking for bereavement luncheons at the church.
Interment was made in the Sylvania Hills Memorial Park, Daugherty
Township. 

Janet M. COLBERT, 87, formerly of Calvin, died at 1:35 a.m. Thursday,
Sept. 14, 2000, at Woodland Retirement Center, Orbisonia. Born Feb. 19,
1913, in Calvin, she was the daughter of the late John L. and Adessa 0.
(Roland) Stever. She was united in marriage to Dwight S. Colbert Sept.
3, 1937, at the Huntingdon County Fair. Mr. Colbert preceded her in
death June 30, 1974. Surviving are a son and a daughter, Harold L.
Colbert of Calvin and Vera E. Fleck of Three Springs, R.D. There are
three grandsons, one step-granddaughter and one great-grandson. Four
brothers and four sisters preceded her in death. Mrs. Colbert was a
member of the Calvin United Methodist Church. At one time, she was a 4-H
leader and a member of the Trough Creek Valley Homemakers Association.
She was a homemaker and was involved in farming with her husband.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday,, Sept. 17 at the Robert
I.McClain Funeral Home, Cassville, with the Rev. Donald Henderson
officiating. Interment will be made at Trough Creek Valley Baptist
Cemetery, Calvin, R.D. 

Maxine H. WALLETT, 74, of 14 W. Milford St., Mount Union, died at 12:45
p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000, at Forest Park Health Home, Carlisle,
where she had been a resident. Born March 26, 1926, in Altoona, she was
a daughter of the late L. Max and Lois (Conner) Hutchison. She was
united in marriage to Victor L. Wallett Jr. Oct. 18, 1952, in
Coudersport, by Dr. Chester Todd Mr. Wallett survives, along with two
sons: David H. Wallett of Mechanicsburg and Robert M. Wallett of
Fayetteville. There are five grandchildren. Two brothers and one sister
survive: L. Max Hutchison Jr. of Shippensburg and Richard C. Hutchison
of Camino, Calif., and Mrs. Fred (Marjorie) Kepner, Wilkes-Barre. One
son, Victor Lewis Wallett and a sister, Joann Carroll, preceded her in
death. Mrs. Wallett was a 1944 graduate of Mount Union High School and a
1948 graduate of Juniata College. She was a retired school teacher,
first working at the Bellefonte School District for a year and
subsequently at the Huntingdon School District for three years.
Following that, she had 24 years of service with the Mount Union Area
School District. Mr. Wallett was a long-time member of the Mount Union
Shakespeare Club and the Order of the Eastern Star No. 280, Mount Union.
A member of the Mount Union Presbyterian Church, she was a long-time
member of the church choir, the Presbyterian Womens Association and also
served as an elder. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday,
Sept. 18, at the Presbyterian Church, Mount Union, with the Rev. Carol
Barrett and the Rev. Elaine P. Africa officiating. Interment will be
made in the Mount Union Cemetery. 

Florence Marie HIPP 79, formerly of 650 Petersburg Pike, Huntingdon,
died Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, at 12:40 a.m., at the Huntingdon Manor in
Huntingdon, where she had resided for the past two and one-half years.
Born April 29, 1921, in Williamsburg, she was the daughter of the late
Roy and Anna (Bathurst) Weaver. She was united in marriage to Joseph A.
Hipp Jr. Aug. 7, 1950, at the Logan Valley Baptist Church in Bellwood,
by the Rev. Meadows. Mr. Hipp survives at home, along with the following
children: Mary E. Ralston, Joseph A. Hipp III, Roy I. Hipp and David E.
Hipp, all of Huntingdon; Dorothy M. Peck,, Petersburg, R.D. 2; Robert J.
Hipp, Altoona, R.D. 3; and Shirley M. Hockenberry, Blairs Mills. There
are 13 grandchildren. One grandson, Bryan E. Hipp, preceded her in
death. Two sisters, Charlotte Marshall of Imler and Louise Boyer of
South Dakota, survive. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Violet
Biddle and Alice Carper, and three brothers, John, Lester and Donald
Weaver. Mrs. Hipp was a member of the Calvary Independent Baptist Church
in Huntingdon. She was a homemaker. Funeral services will be held
Monday, Sept. 18, at 2 p.m., at the Calvary Independent Baptist Church,
Huntingdon, with the Rev. Dr. Thomas C. Coleman officiating. Interment
will be made in the Riverview Cemetery, Huntingdon. 

Williard L. "Crow" CARPER, 72, of P.O. Box 148, Mill Creek, died Friday,
Sept. 15, 2000, at 10:58 a.m., at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital,
Huntingdon. Born Dec. 14, 1927, in Warriors Mark, he was the son of the
late George E. and Sara (Gray) Carper. He was united in marriage to
Ethel L. Shultz Oct, 7, 1950, in Winchester, Va. Mrs. Carper survives at
home, along with four children: Brenda J. Bollinger and Bonita K.
Carper, both of Mount Union, Terry M. Carper of Mill Creek, and Barbara
Ghaffaar of Mount Union. There are 11 grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren. One brother, William A. Carper of Smithfield,
Huntingdon, survives. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Dennis A.
Raison, one sister and ten brothers. Mr. Carper was a member of the
Emmanuel Bible Church, Huntingdon, RD 4. He had been employed by the
Boyle Ice Plant in Huntingdon and later by C.H. Miller Hardware, also in
Huntingdon. He was then self-employed as the owner/operator of Carper's
Appliance and Repair Service for 29 1/2 years, retiring in 1997. He had
also been a substitute refrigeration teacher at Huntingdon County Career
and Technology Center in Mill Creek. Funeral services will be held
Tuesday, Sept. 19, at 11 a.m., at the Robert E. Peters Funeral Home,
Huntingdon, with Pastor Robert G. Maurer, Pastor Greg L. Harven and
Pastor Steven L. Crile officiating. Interment will be made in the
Goodman Cemetery, Huntinigdon. R.D. 3. 

Wilbur M. "Wib" DIXON, 62, of Huntingdon, R.D. 3, died Saturday, Sept.
16, 2000, at 6:03 a.m., at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon.
Born Oct. 13, 1937, in Aliquippa, he was the son of the late Wilbur F.
Dixon and Jane (Peoples) Dixon, who survives at Huntingdon, R.D. 2. One
daughter, Mrs. Sean (Margaret J. "Peggy") Vlasak of Huntingdon, R.D. 3,
survives, along with a grandson. Also surviving are four siblings: Wanda
Wagner, John Dixon, Carol Sue Peck and Dale Dixon, all of Huntingdon.
Mr. Dixon was a member of the Presbyterian Church of McAlevys Fort. He
was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge No. 223 and Standing
Stone Post No. 1754 VFW, both of Huntingdon. A 1955 graduate of
Huntingdon Area High School, he worked as a car salesman at Huston Ford
and Sheehan Motors of Huntingdon. During the Vietnam War he served in
the U.S. Army, stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood in Missouri with
Headquarters Company, Third Training Regiment. Funeral services will be
held Wednesday, Sept. 20, at 8 p.m., at the Robert E. Peters Funeral
Home, Huntingdon, with the Rev. Donald Pangbum officiating. Interment
will be private at the convenience of the family. 

Richard B. "Rich" DREESE, 41, of 1506 Mifflin St., Huntingdon, died
Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, at 3:10 a.m., in Huntingdon. Born Oct. 2, 1958,
in Huntingdon, he was the son of R. Donald Dreese and the late Esther L.
(Eckley) Dreese, who preceded him in death June 29, 1980. His father
survives in Harrisburg, along with his step-mother, Eloise F. Dreese.
His paternal grandmother, Mrs. Robert (Gladys) Dreese of Pleasant Gap,
survives. Two half-brothers, Douglas A. Dreese of St. Marys, Ga., and
Derrick A. Dreese of Annapolis, Md., survive. Mr. Dreese is also
survived by his uncle, Daniel J. Houser, with whom he resided for 30
years, and a cousin, Deborah J. (Houser) Hetrick, also of Huntingdon. He
was a member of the Huntingdon Presbyterian Church. Mr. Dreese was a
member of the Huntingdon Hook and Ladder Fire Company, was a former
member of DeMolay, Huntingdon, and the Boy Scouts of America. He was
employed as a grocery clerk at BiLo Food Market in Huntingdon for 23
years. Educated in the Huntingdon public schools, he graduated from
Huntingdon Area High School in 1977. A resident of Huntingdon County
since birth, he had lived at his current residence since 1973. He was an
avid sports card collector and Penn State fan, and enjoyed making latch
hook items. A firefighters' memorial service will be held at 8 p.m.
today, at the John B. Brown Funeral Home, Inc., Huntingdon. A funeral
service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19, at the funeral home,
with the Rev. Leslie R.F. Papp officiating. Interment will be made in
the Greenlea Presbyterian Cemetery, McAlevys Fort, Jackson township.

Fred S. PARK, 76, of 800 Rice Ave., Girard, died Wednesday, Sept. 6,
2000, at Saint Vincent Health Center. Born May 28,1924, in Mapleton, he
was the son of the late Virl and Reba (Wharton) Park. Surviving along
with his wife of 50 years, Dorothy Jean (Platz) Park, are five
daughters: Mrs. Phil (Barbara) Everett and Mrs. Arthur (Linda) Rhoades,
all of Lake City; Mrs. Robert (Cynthia) Kremenik, Girard; Mrs. Peter
(Suzanne) Sherwin, Cape Coral, Fla.; and Mrs. William (Kathleen)
Sibbald, Edinboro. There are 12 grandchildren, three
great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and
grandnephews. One brother, Max Park of Mapleton, and a sister, Mrs.
Elsworth (Fern) Mast of Coatesville, survive. He was preceded in death
by a brother, Virl H. Park Jr., and a sister, Joyce Dell. During World
War II, Mr. Park served in the U.S. Navy aboard LST 347 and LST 72. He
participated in the invasions at Sicily, Italy and Normandy, France. He
worked as an inspector for Norfolk Southern Railroad for 30 years. He
also owned and operated Lake City Welding Co. from 1954-1978. He served
as a Girard Township supervisor for six years. He was master of Lake
Erie Lodge No. 347, F&AM, and was a life member of the Zem Zem Temple,
Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Erie, Veteran of Foreign Wars Post No.
4965, and American Legion Post No. 773. Mr. Park was also a member of
the Transportation Communications International Union and Lake City
United Methodist Church. Interment was made in Girard Cemetery. 

Ethel Faye SWOPE, 79, formerly of James Creek, R.R. 1, died Monday,
Sept. 18, 2000, at 4:50 a.m., at Huntingdon Manor, Huntingdon. Born Aug.
22, 1921, in James Creek, R.D., she was the daughter of the late George
F. Sr. and Alice S. (Russell) Houp. She was united in marriage April 30,
1940, in Martinsburg to Paul R. Swope by Justice of the Peace C. Guy
Bailey. He preceded her in death Aug. 9, 1997. One son, Paul D. Swope of
Bedford survives, along with two grand- children and five
great-grandchildren. Also surviving are several siblings: Glenn E. Houp
and Earl F. Houp, both of James Creek, R.D.; George F. Houp Jr.,
Huntingdon, R.D. 3; Betty J. Hall, Carlisle; and Annabelle Kidd, Mill
Creek. Mrs. Swope was a member of the Russellville United Church of
Christ and the Broad Top Senior Citizens. A graduate of Saxton-Liberty
High School, Class of 1939, she was a homemaker. Funeral services will
be held Friday, Sept., 22, at 11 a.m., at the Robert E. Peters Funeral
Home, Huntingdon, with the Rev. James L. Blair officiating. Interment
will be made in the Huntingdon Memorial Gardens, Huntingdon, R.D. 1. 

Cora Mae LONG, 91, of 114 E. Shirley St., Mount Union, died at 6:10 p.m.
Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000, at her home. Her death was unexpected. Born
Sept. 30, 1908, in Mount Union, she was the daughter of the late George
and Mamie (Bennett) Foreman. She was united in marriage to Robert C.
Long Dec. 25, 1935. He preceded her in death Jan. 26, 1972. One sister,
Mrs. Charles Elsworth (Phyllis) Gill of Altoona, survives, along with
several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother,
Robert Foreman, and sisters, Arlene Stump and Stella Crone. Mrs. Long
was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Mount Union. She was
a member of the Order of the Eastern Star No. 280, Mount Union;
Rebekah.Lodge No. 227, Mountainview; and White Shrine of Jerusalem,
Lewistown. She had been employed by L. Greif Brothers Manufacturing,
Inc. in Mount Union for 40 years and by the Shapiro Theatre in Mount
Union for 35 years. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday,
Sept. 22, at the Robert D. Heath Funeral Home, Mount Union, with the
Rev. Dr. Kenneth Grundon officiating. Interment will be made in the
Mount Union Cemetery. 

Raymond J. "Joker" WALKER, 81, of 204 Standing Stone Ave., Huntingdon,
died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000, at 8 p.m., at J.C. Blair Memorial
Hospital: Huntingdon, following a brief illness. Born Oct. 23, 1918, in
Huntingdon, he was the son of the late George E. and Sylvia (Smith)
Walker. He was united in marriage to Ruth M. McElwain Sept. 20, 1941, in
Winchester, Va. Mrs. Walker survives at home, along with one daughter
and one son: Mrs. William (Sharon) Monihen of Huntingdon and Alan R.
Walker of Chaffee, N.Y There are five grandchildren. One sister and two
brothers also survive: Peggy Hall of McConnellstown, George Walker of
Huntingdon and Russell Walker of San Antonio, Texas. Two brothers,
Richard and Harry Walker, preceded him in death. He was a member of the
First United Methodist Church, Huntingdon. Mr. Walker was a member of
the Frank P. Hommon Post No. 24, American Legion, Huntingdon, and the
Standing Stone Golf Course. He retired in 1984 from the United States
Postal Service after 23 years of service with the Huntingdon Post Office
as a letter carrier and clerk. A 1938 graduate of Huntingdon High
School, he served in the U.S. Army before and during World War II. He
attained the rank of Technician Fifth Class with the Supply Detachment,
Section L of the Quartermasters Corps, while stationed in Camp McCain,
Miss. A resident of Huntingdon County since birth, he had lived at his
current residence since 1951. Mr. Walker enjoyed hunting and golfing. A
funeral service will be held Saturday, Sept. 23, at 10 a.m., at the John
B. Brown Funeral Home, Huntingdon, with the Rev. Doyle H. Klinger Jr.
officiating. Interment will be made in the Donation Cemetery, Oneida
township. 

Anna Mae WHITSEL, 89, formerly of Mill Creek, died Tuesday, Sept. 19,
2000, at 1:15 p.m., at the Woodland Retirement Center, Orbisonia. Born
Dec. 2, 1910, in Mill Creek, she was the daughter of the late Fred and
Elizabeth (Crownover) Hall. She was united in marriage to Alexander
Whitsel Dec. 22,1934, in Huntingdon. He preceded her in death July
4,1990. Surviving are two children, Robert A. Whitsel of Cresson and Ina
L. Stone of Newark, Del. There are five grandchildren and six
great-grandchildren. Two sons, Donald E. Whitsel and Melvin L. Whitsel,
preceded her in death. One sister, Phyllis Corbin of Huntingdon,
survives. A sister, Ruth Hershey, preceded her in death. Mrs. Whitsel
was of the Protestant faith. She was a homemaker. Funeral services will
be held Friday, Sept. 22, at 3 p.m., at the Robert E. Peters Funeral
Home, Huntingdon, with the Rev. Phillip G. May officiating. Interment
will be made in the Mountainview Cemetery Mill Creek. 

Grace Gates KEOUGH, 87, of 129 Clover Dr., Hollidaysburg, formerly of
Huntingdon, died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000, at 5 p.m., at her residence.
Born Feb. 24, 1913, in Robertsdale, she was the daughter of the late
Daniel and Betsey (Dempsie) Williams. She was first united in marriage
to Ferdinand Gates in 1934. He preceded her in death in 1954. She
married James Keough in 1968, and he preceded her in death in 1994. One
daughter, Patricia Gates Crum of Hollidaysburg, survives. One
step-daughter, Jayne Keough Smith of Denver, Colo, survives. There is
one granddaughter. One grandson, Gregory Crum, preceded her in death.
One sister and one brother survive: Lougretta Stallman of Belleville and
Marvin Williams of Huntingdon. Mrs. Keough attended the Ward Avenue
Presbyterian Church, Altoona. She was a member of the Order of the
Eastern Star, Huntingdon Chapter No. 159, and the Order of Amaranth,
Juniata Valley Court No. 121, Huntingdon. A funeral service will be held
Friday, Sept. 22, at 2 p.m., at the John B. Brown Funeral Home,
Huntingdon, with the Rev. Douglas McGaffin officiating. Interment will
be made in the Huntingdon Memorial Gardens, Huntingdon. 

Esther E. HARSHBARGER, 80, of Meadowview Manor, McVeytown, R.D.,
formerly of Newton Hamilton, died at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20,
2000, at the Altoona Hospital. Born Nov. 25, 1919, in Mapleton, she was
a daughter of the late Moses F. and L. Ruth (Williams) Moist. Her
husband, Bruce D. Harshbarger, whom she married Aug. 16, 1944, preceded
her in death Dec. 10, 1973. Surviving are a son, Ronald B. Harshbarger
of Ryde, three granddaughters, three great-granddaughters and three
great-grandsons. Also surviving are four brothers: Chester F. Moist,
Mount Union, R.D.; James E. Moist, Tyrone, R.D.; Lester R. Moist,
Elizabethtown; and Moses F. Moist, Mapleton. She was preceded in death
by two brothers, Charles F. Moist and John E. Moist, and an infant
sister, Margaret Jane Moist. Mrs. Harshbarger was employed by Owens
Corning Fiberglas in Huntingdon for 21 years, retiring in 1972. She was
a member of the Newton Hamilton United Methodist Church. She enjoyed
solving word puzzles. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday,
Sept. 24, at the Harshbarger Funeral Home, 3 S. Market St., McVeytown,
with the Rev. Phyllis Hunter officiating. Interment will be made in
Newton Hamilton Cemetery. 

Annis (Underwood) HAMMOND, 84, of 204 Westminster Dr., Huntingdon, died
Thursday, Sept. 21, 2000, at 11. a.m., at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital,
Huntingdon, following several years of extensive physical disabilities.
Born April 28, 1916, in Fleming, she was the daughter of the late
Chapman and Miriam (Brower) Underwood. She married Lafayette E. Hammond
Sept. 28, 1940, in Albany, N.Y. Mr. Hammond survives at home, along with
two sons: Barry R. Hammond of Butler and Nelson C. Hammond of Chicago,
I11. One grandchild survives. One daughter, Patricia A. Hammond,
preceded her in death in 1990. She was also preceded in death by one
brother and one sister, Joseph Underwood and Helen (Underwood) Kraybill.
Mrs. Hammond was a member of the Lehigh Valley Religious Society of
Friends (Quakers), Lehigh Valley. She was a member of the Chi Omega
Sorority at Simmons College in Boston, Mass., and the American Library
Association in Washington, D.C. She was emnloved as a librarian at the
Pennsylvania State University at University Park and the Philadelphia
Art Museum in Philadelphia. She also worked as a reference librarian for
the Easton Area Public Library for 10 years, retiring in 1971. Mrs.
Hammond attended the Fleming public schools and was a 1934 graduate of
State College High School. She received her bachelor's degree in library
science from the former Pennsylvania State College, now Pennsylvania
State University, with the Class of 1938. In 1939, she earned a master's
degree in library science from Simmons College in Boston, Mass. She had
lived at her current residence since 1998. She enjoyed needlecraft. A
private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family.
A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date for the Lehigh
Valley Friends Meeting. Interment will be made in the Stroudsburg
Friends Burial Ground, Eighth and Ann streets, Stroudsburg. 

Mary Elizabeth ELLENBERGER, 74, of 508 Moore St., Huntingdon, died
Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2000, at 4 p.m., at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital,
Huntingdon. Born Dec. 25, 1925, in Thomasville, N.C., she was the
daughter of the late George and Orpha (Roland) Gushard. She was united
in marriage to Clair E. Ellenberger Feb. 8, 1950, in Mapleton, by the
Rev. Amos D. Meyers. He preceded her in death April 13, 1976. One son,
Gary Lee Ellenberger of Huntingdon, R.D. 3, survives, along with three
granddaughters and two great-grandchildren. The last surviving member of
her immediate family, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Ray R.
Gushard and Frank G. Gushard. Mrs. Ellenberger was of the Baptist faith.
She was employed as a cook at Tops Diner in Mill Creek and also at IGA
Foodliner in Huntingdon. She retired from the housekeeping department of
Juniata College as a materials director. She was a 1943 graduate of a
high school in Thomasville, N.C. Funeral services will be held Saturday,
Sept. 23, at 2 p.m., at the Robert E. Peters Funeral Home, Huntingdon,
with the Rev. David L. Dearing officiating. Interment will be made in
the Huntingdon Memorial Gardens, Huntingdon, R.D. 1. 

Darin Wade COHENOUR, 17, of Three Springs, died at 8:51 a.m., Wednesday,
Sept. 20, 2000, along Route 994 in Three Springs, as a result of
injuries sustained in an auto accident. Born June 8, 1983, in
McConnellsburg, he was the son of Gerald and Linda (Fortney) Cohenour
who survive at their home. Also surviving are the following brothers and
sisters: Lee Cohenour, Terry Cohenour, Frank Cohenour, Stacy Kauffman
and Katrina Benson, all of Three Springs. Randy Cohenour of Orrstown;
Rick Cohenour of Saltillo; and Heidi Getz of Mapleton. He was a member
of the junior class of Southern Huntingdon County High School. He
enjoyed cars, motorcycles and music. He attended the Three Springs
Assembly of God Church. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Monday
Sept. 25, 2000 at the Martin R. Brown Funeral Home, Orbisonia, with the
Rev. Clarence Fortney officiating. Interment will be made at Three
Springs Cemetery. 

George F. STOLTZ, 78, of Huntingdon, formerly of Chest Springs, died
Thursday, Sept. 21, 2000, at his home, Born March 11, 1922, in Patton,
he was the son of the late Leo and Matilda (Nagle) Stoltz. He married
Marge Feighner June 17, 1943, in Tampa, Fla. Surviving along with Mrs.
Stoltz are two daughters: Mrs. Ray (Joyce) Cherico, Akron, Ohio, and
Debra Woomer, Hesston. There are six grandchildren and one
great-granddaughter. Also surviving ate the following siblings: Vera
Blake, San Diego,, Calif.; Francis Stoltz, Akron, Ohio; William Stoltz,
Chest Springs; Dwayne Stoltz, Patton; Janet McCauley, Chest Springs;
Donna McCauley, Lancaster; Shirley Anderson, Ebensburg; John Allen, Glen
Burnie, Md.; Beverly Ambrisco and Norma Jean Grant, both of Ebensburg.
One brother, Robert, an infant brother, Norman, and an infant sister,
Eileen, preceded him in death. Mr. Stoltz was an Army Air Corps veteran
of World War II, where he served as a radio operator in New Guinea. For
41 years, he worked as a pipe fitter/welder for PennCentral Railroad and
retired in 1981. He was a third degree member of the Knights of
Columbus, Barnesboro Council; Standing Stone Golf Club, where he was a
member of the senior league; Killbuck Squares, Patton; Loretto American
Legion; and Ashville VFW. He was also a member of the Most Holy Trinity
Catholic Church, Huntingdon, and former member of St. Monica's Catholic
Church, Chest Springs. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday,
Sept. 25, at St. Monica's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Timothy Stein
officiating. Interment will be made in the St. Monica cemetery. 

Elvin L. WALKER Sr., 73, of Rockhill Furnace died Thursday, Sept. 21,
2000, at his home. Death was unexpected. Born July 28, 1927, at
Saltillo, he was the son of the late Rev. Paul and Hazel (Watkins)
Walker Sr. He is survived by his step-mother Hazel (Miller) Walker,
Mount Union. He was first united in marriage to Marcialyn Short Hakes
who survives in Las Vegas, Nev. He later married the former Henrietta L.
Wolford, Sept. 5, 1959 at Harrisburg. Mrs. Walker survives at their
home. Mr. Walker is survived by the following children: L. Stephen
Walker Sr., of Whitehall; John Walker, Red Lion; Kimberly Hornburger,
Sierverville, Tenn; Elva Fedin, Newville; Helenmarie Boonie,
Masseysburg; Lori Diven, Orbisonia and Elvin J. Walker Jr, Salenas,
Calif. Nine grandchildren also survive. One grandson preceded in death.
One sister survives, Pauline Short of Waynesboro. Also surviving are the
following half-brothers and half-sisters: David Walker of Hawthorne;
James Walker of Oak Ridge; Paul Walker of Mount Union; Daniel Walker of
McVeytown; Twila Horstick of Mechanicsville, Md; Darlene Coco of
Arizona; Hazel Mills of White Plains, Md. and Alda Rockey of Enola. He
was of the Protestant faith. Mr. Walker retired from the
Orbisonia-Rockhill Joint Municipal Authority in 1993 after 20 years of
service. Prior to that he had worked at Letterkenny Army Depot,
Chambersburg. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps. Funeral
services will be held at the convenience of the family. There will be no
public viewing or visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of
the Martin R. Brown Funeral Home, Orbisonia. 

Jacob Ronald Glenn KEITH, 8, of 201 15th St., Saxton, died at 9:10 p.m.
Friday, Sept. 22, 2000, at his home following an extended illness. Born
Sept. 27, 1991, in Bedford, he was the son of Daniel H. and Kim K.
(Horton) Keith. Surviving along with his parents are two sisters and a
brother: Kylee Lemin and Cindy Keith of Saxton and J.D. Keith, at home.
Other survivors are his paternal grandparents, Wes and Jean Dixon of
Saxton and maternal grandparents, Ron and Sally Horton of Saxton. Also
surviving are his paternal great-grandmother, Mary Bussard of Six Mile
Run, R.D. 1, and maternal great-grandfather, Mike Horton of Wells
Tannery. Jacob was a member of the Saxton United Methodist Church. He
enjoyed playing baseball and was a third grade student at Saxton-Liberty
Elementary School. Funeral services were held Monday, September 25 at
the D. Ronald Long Funeral Chapel, Saxton. Interment was made in the
Grandview Cemetery, Saxton, R.D. 

Leroy J. HARTZLER, 90, a resident of Valley View Haven, Belleville,
formerly of Belleville, died at 10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22, 2000, at
Valley View. Born July 26, 1910, in Belleville, he was the son of the
late Thomas B. and Bertha (Stolzfus) Hartzler. His wife, Sadie
(Kauffman) Hartzler, whom he married Sept. 2, 1934, died April 6, 1977.
Surviving are: children, Lee M. Hartzler, Belleville, Kenneth J.
Hartzler, Newton, Kan., and Mrs. Frank (Kathy) Chambers, Lewistown; a
sister, Mrs. Paul (Cora) Yoder, Belleville; eight grandchildren and 13
great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Lester Hartzler
on April 3, 1989; a sister, Mrs. Lester (Amanda) Zook; and brothers,
Jesse Hartzler, Thomas Hartzler, Raymond Hartzler, Paul Hartzler, and
Jefferson Hartzler. He was a dairy farmer and a truck driver for D.K.
Hostetler. He was a member of Locust Grove Mennonite Church and the
Senior Men's Sunday School Class. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m.
Tuesday at the Locust Grove Mennonite Church, with the Rev. Max Hook and
the Rev. Erie Renno officiating. Interment will be in Locust Grove
Cemetery. 

Raniel Charles RAMSEY, 67, of HCR 73, Three Springs, died at 6 a.m.
Saturday, Sept. 23, 2000, at his home in Springfield Township,
Huntingdon County. Born Jan. 12, 1933, in Maddensville, he was the son
of the late Clyde and Sarah (Snyder) Ramsey. He was married to Jennie L.
Gartland Sept. 14, 1955. Mrs. Ramsey survives, along with one son and
one daughter: Dusty R. Ramsey of Franklinville, N.Y., and Mamie R.
Streightiff of Three Springs. There are three grandchildren. Two
brothers and one sister survive: Tony Ramsey, Thomas Ramsey and Gail
Stains, all of Three Springs. One brother, Herbert Ramsey, preceded him
in death. Mr. Ramsey was of the Protestant faith. He served in the U.S.
Army between 1953- 1955. He was a member of the Cromwell Lodge No. 572,
Orbisonia; Jaffa Shrine, Altoona; and the former IOOF Lodge, Waterfall.
He worked as a heavy equipment operator and mechanic in road
construction and coal mining. He was last employed by S and S
Construction, Chambersburg. Private services will be held at the
convenience of the family. There will be no public viewing or
visitation. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Martin
R. Brown Funeral Home, Orbisonia. 

James F. EDGIN of R.D. 1, Box 258, Mount Union, died at 5:46 a.m.
Sunday, Sept. 24, 2000, at his home, following a brief illness. Born
March 10, 1929, in Mount Union, he was the son of the late Oscar and Ida
(McKim) Edgin. He was united in marriage to Jean Johnson June 25, 1956,
in Hagerstown, Md. His wife survives, along with a son, James R. Edgin,
in Mount Union. There are two grandsons. One sister and two brothers
also survive: Genevieve Inch and Dale Edgin, both of Mount Union, R.D.
1, and Cleo Miller of South Carolina. He was preceded in death by a
sister and a brother, Alda Edgin and Harold Edgin. Mr. Edgin was a
graduate of the Mount Union High School. A veteran of U.S. Army, he
retired from New Enterprise Stone and Lime Company as a bridge
carpenter, after 17 years of service. Mr. Edgin was an avid outdoorsman
and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a member of the Germany Valley
Church of the Brethren and attended the Christian and Missionary
Alliance Church in Mount Union. He was active in the church and was a
former Sunday School teacher for the adult class. The funeral service
will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 27, at the Robert D. Heath
Funeral Home, Mount Union, with Pastor Jeff Winstead and William Wollett
officiating. Interment will be made in the Otelia Mennonite Cemetery,
Mount Union, R.D. 1. 

Albert H. MILLER, 82, of McAlevy's Fort, died Sunday, Sept. 24, 2000, at
Valley View Haven, Belleville. Born Oct. 7, 1917, in Mauch Chunk, he was
the son of the late Frank George and Clara (Deahn) Miller. His wife,
Madeline (Wilson) Miller, whom he married March 1, 1938, died Sept. 24,
1979. Surviving are: children, Mrs. Dennis (L. Renee) Hardin, Wichita,
Kan., Arlen C. Miller, Stow, Ohio, and Kenneth D. Miller, State College;
nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was owner and
operator of A.H. Miller Lumber Company, McAlevy's Fort, retiring in
1979. He was a member of St. Stephen's Lutheran Church; the Free and
Accepted Masons, Mt. Myriah, Huntingdon; the Ancient and Accepted
Scottish Rite Consistory, Valley of Altoona; and the Jaffa Shrine,
Altoona. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Koch Funeral
Home, 2401 S. Atherton St., State College, with the Rev. Robert Cauffman
officiating. Interment will be in St. Stephen's Lutheran Cemetery,
McAlevy's Fort. 

George C. MYERS, 72, of Newport, died Sunday, Sept. 24, 2000, at the
Polyclinic Hospital, Harrisburg. Born July 4, 1928, in Mount Union, he
was Ahe son of the late Wilbur and Ethel P. (Grove) Myers. He is
survived by his wife, the former Erma Holden, and the following
daughters: Barbara Strawser and Brenda Butler, both of Newport, and
Michelle Jochimsen, Clarksville, Tenn. There are eight grandchildren.
Three sisters, Thelma Folk of Quarryville, Pearl Lane of Mount Union and
Joyce Shumaker of McVeytown, survive. He was preceded in death by a
daughter, Darlene J. Henry, who had resided in Newport; brothers Carl
Myers, who had resided in Paris, Calif, and Sam Myers, who had resided
in Marysville, California; an a sister, Eleanor Lancaster, who had
resided in Mount Union. Mr. Myers retired from the US Army and the
Farmers Home Administration. He enjoyed woodworking. Funeral services
were held Monday. Interment was made in the Indiantown Gap National
Cemetery with full military honors. 

Mary L. WILLIS, 68, of 506 Blair House, Huntingdon, died Monday, Sept.
25, 2000, at her residence. Her death was unexpected. Born Aug. 14,
1932, in Huntingdon, she was the daughter of the late Herman and Bessie
(Crownover) White. She was united in marriage to Paul E. Willis Jan. 24,
1970, in West Chester. He preceded her in death Aug. 31, 1985. One
daughter, Mrs. Timothy (Carol) Allen of Calvin and three grandchildren,
survive. The last surviving member of her immediate family, she was
preceded in death by a sister, Frances I. White. Mrs. Willis attended
the Living Water Fellowship in Huntingdon and was a homemaker. Funeral
services will be held Friday, Sept. 29, at 11 a.m., at the Robert E.
Peters Funeral Home, Huntingdon, with the Rev. Georgetta "Cookie"
Hartley officiating. Interment will be made in the Russellville
Methodist Cemetery, James Creek, R.D. 1. 

Donald Lee BAKER Sr., 64, of R.D. 4, Box 242, Smithfield Township,
Huntingdon, died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000, at 1:05 p.m., at his
residence. He had been in failing health for the past several months.
Born Oct. 2, 1935, in Mount Union, he was the son of Edgar W. Hefright,
who survives in Smithfield, Huntingdon, and the late Marie Alma (Baker)
Hefright. He was united in marriage to Helen Louise Himes Dec. 23, 1955,
in Maryland. Mrs. Baker survives in Huntingdon, along with two daughters
and a son: Mrs. James (Patricia Ann) Slauson, Dilltown; Mrs. Richard
(Dianne Louise) McMahon, Hesston; and Donald Lee Baker Jr., Juniata
Township, Blair County. There are nine grandchildren, two
step-grandchildren and one great-grandchild. One son, David Edgar Baker,
preceded him in death May 21, 1998. Mr. Baker retired in 1998, following
38 years of service at Juniata College with the custodial staff. He was
a member of the Frank R Hommon American Legion Post No. 24, Huntingdon,
where he was past commander and member of the color Guard; Loyal Order
of the Moose Lodge No. 223, Huntingdon; and he also belonged to 40 et 8
(La Societe Des 40 Hommes et 8 Chevalik). Educated in the Huntingdon
public schools, Mr. Baker served in the United States Air Force from
1955 until 1957. He was a lifetime resident of Huntingdon. A memorial
service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29, at the Cutright-Speck
Funeral Home, Ridge Road and Juniata Avenue, Smithfield Township,
Huntingdon, with the Rev. Doyle H. Klinger Jr. officiating. Private
interment will be made in the veterans' section of Riverview Cemetery,
Huntingdon. Full military honors will be observed following the memorial
service at the funeral home. 

Helen R. KIRSCHNER of 12 E. Milford St., Mount Union, died at 12:55 a.m.
Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000, at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon.
Born in Shade Gap, she was the daughter of the late Harry C. and Mary
(Cunningham) Roddy. She was first married to Herman Weiss and later to
Isadore Kirschner. Both husbands preceded her in death. One daughter,
Gloria Bakin of West Palm Beach, Fla., survives. There are eight
grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Also surviving are a brother, Reed C. Roddy of Pittsburgh and a sister,
Mary Kathryn Long of Sarasota. Fla. One daughter, Shirley Ann Weiss,
preceded her in death. The following brothers and sisters also preceded
her in death: Margaret Roddy, Ken Roddy, Raymond Roddy, Harry Roddy and
Martha Rosensteel. Mrs. Kirschner was of the Jewish faith. She attended
business college in New York City after graduation from high School and
was a buyer in the New York fashion district for many years. There will
be no funeral services. Memorial contributions may be made to the
donor's choice. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the
Robert D. Heath Funeral Home, Mount Union. 

William R. HOSLER, 35, of Lewisburg, died of natural causes, Monday,
Sept. 25, 2000, while walking near his home. Born Nov. 12, 1964, in
Lewistown, he was the son of Thomas Hosler and Margaret Ann (Partchey)
Hosler. His wife of 13 years, Heidi (Schwarz) Hosler, survives. Also
surviving are daughters, Sheryl Hosler and Karyn Hosler, both at home.
He earned his Bachelor of Science and master's degrees in agriculture at
Penn State University. He was on the board of directors of Omicron
Chapter of Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity. He served as an extension agent for
Economic and Community Development with the Penn State Extension for 14
years. He was a hunter and a fisherman. A memorial service will be held
at 1:30 Wednesday, Oct. 4, at the John H. Shaw III Funeral Home, Market
and Eighth Streets, Lewisburg. A private visitation will be for family
only. 

Anna Mae (Shoemaker) GREEN, 92, a resident of The Oaks at Westminster
Woods, formerly of R.R. 4, Box 233, Huntingdon, died Tuesday, Sept. 26,
2000, at 8:43 p.m., at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon. Born
July 31, 1908, in Graham Township, Clearfield County, she was the
daughter of the late William W. and Sarah (Shirey) Shoemaker. She was
united in marriage to Merrill A. Green Sr. April 18, 1931, in Lock
Haven. He preceded her in death June 22, 1982. One son and one daughter
survive: Merrill A. Green Jr. of Riverside, Calif., and Mrs. Edward
(Norma G.) Corle, Huntingdon. There are four grandchildren and seven
great-grandchildren. The last surviving member of her immediate family,
she was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother: Ethel
Shoemaker, Frances (Shoemaker) Green and William Shoemaker. Mrs. Green
was a member of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church,
Huntingdon. She taught in the Clearfield County schools and Smithfield
Township, Huntingdon County schools. She later taught in the elementary
schools of the Huntingdon Area School District, retiring from the
Huntingdon schools. She was a member of the Pennsylvania Association of
School Retirees. Mrs. Green attended the Philipsburg public schools and
graduated from Philipsburg High School in 1926. She received her
teaching certificate from Lock Haven Normal School in 1929. She had been
a resident of Huntingdon County since 1931. She enjoyed crossword
puzzles, needlework, gardening and reading. A funeral service will be
held at the John B. Brown Funeral Home, Inc., Huntingdon, Saturday,
Sept. 30, at 10:30 a.m., with the Rev. Peter E. Sears officiating.
Interment will be made in the Huntingdon Memorial Gardens, Huntingdon,
R.R. 1. 

Miriam R. FUNK, 78, of 877 Baumgardner Road, Lancaster, died Wednesday,
Sept. 27, 2000, at her home, following a brief illnes. Born Dec. 25,
1921, in Huntingdon, she was the daughter of the late John and Edna
(Baldwin) Read. She married Kenneth M. Funk and they celebrated their
24th anniversary Sept. 19. In addition to her husband, she is survived
by three sons and two daughters: James R. Kyper, Pittsburgh; Michael R.
Kyper, Lancaster; Frederick A. Kyper, Pequea; Mrs. Paul (Nancy K.)
Thomas, Conestoga, and Mrs. Michael (Jean) Carroll, Lancaster. Also
surviving are the following stepdaughters: Mrs. Dwayne (Carolyn) Thomas,
Lancaster; Mrs. Gregg (Brenda) Higgins, Lancaster; Mrs. Joseph (Barbara)
Slagle, Millersville; and a stepson, Andrew Funk of Mt. Joy. There are
22 grandchildren and one great-grandson. One son, Don F. Kyper, preceded
her in death. Three sisters, Mrs. Morris (Kathryn) Terrizzi of
Huntingdon, Mrs. Louis (Frances) Thurman, Brookings, Ore., and Lucy
Neely of Bellevue, W.Va., survive. Mrs. Funk retired from Millersville
University in 1988, after 18 years as a secretary. She was a member of
St. James Episcopal Church, Lancaster, where she was a member of the
church Altar Guild. She was also a member of the Red Rose Garden Chapter
of the American Business Women's Assocation, where she was the current
secretary, past president, past special membership and past program
chairperson. She was also a past recipient of the Woman of the Year
award. She belonged to the Veterans of Foreign War Ladies Auxiliary in
Millersville and was secretary of the Centerville Area AARP. For two
years she also served as secretary/treasurer and special program and
special event coordinator of the Millersville State College Business
Association. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a requiem
eucharist at St. James Episcopal Church, 119 N. Duke St., Lancaster,
Saturday, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Peter Eaton officiating. Interment
will be held at the convenience of the family. 

Harold R. KRINER, 56, of 56 S. Federal St., Chambersburg, died
Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000, at 3:20 p.m., at Chambersburg Hospital. Born
Nov. 29, 1943, in Hagerstown, Md., he was the son of the late Adam
Kritchen Kriner and Anna Mary Katherine Kriner Heefner, who survives in
Chambersburg. He was united in marriage to Kimberly Bigler Aug. 3, 1974,
in Todd. Mrs. Kriner survives at home, along with the following
children: Harold Kriner II, Waynesboro; Mrs. Mike (Rebecca) McCauley,
Mont Alto; Mrs. James (Katherine) Moats, Waynesboro; Samantha Kriner,
Danyell Kriner and Jacob Kriner, all of Chambersburg. There are four
grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, Richard Kriner and John
Kriner, both of Chambersburg, and two stepbrothers, Theodore Heefner Jr.
of Chambersburg and Ronald Heefner of Lancaster. Mr. Kriner was preceded
in death by his step-father, T.C. "Shorty" Heefner. A 1961 graduate of
Milton Hershey School in Hershey, he was an HVAC engineer at the
Chambersburg Hospital for 27 years, retiring in 1998. He was a member of
the National Guard and the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge No. 842,
Chambersburg. Mr. Kriner enjoyed playing pool. Funeral services will be
held Monday, Oct. 2, at 11:30 a.m., at the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral
Home, 333 Falling Spring Rd., Chambersburg, with the Rev. Peter W. Emig
officiating. Interment will be made in the Parklawns Memorial Gardens,
Chambersburg. 

Ruth P. BAER, 90, formerly of Mount Union, most recently of HCR 61,
Shade Gap, where she resided with her son R. Max Baer, died at 5:08 p.m.
Friday, Sept. 29, 2000, at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon. Her
death was unexpected. Born Dec. 23, 1909, in Latrobe, she was the
daughter of the late Oren and Effie (Kelly) Snyder. She was married to
Harvey "Hen" Nelson Baer April 30, 1930, in Hagerstown, Md. He preceded
her in death July 3, 1954. Surviving are three children: Nelson F. Baer
of McVeytown, R.R. 1, R. Max Baer of HCR 61, Shade Gap, and Diane L.
Anders of Lewistown. There are 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren
and three great-great-grandchildren. One granddaughter preceded her in
death. The last surviving member of her immediate family, she was
preceded in death by the following brothers and sisters: Wilbert Snyder,
Ralph Snyder, Howard Snyder, Lawrence Snyder, Lillian Reck, Mary
Goodhart and Grace Carr. Mrs. Baer was a member of the Allenport United
Methodist Church, where she also taught Sunday School in the primary
department, played piano for the Sunday School and Women's Society and
was a charter member since 1968 of the Women's Society. For several
years, she was employed by L. Greif Manufacturing Co., Mount Union, and
was appointed tax collector for Shirley Township, Huntingdon County,
following her husband's death in 1954, and subsequently won election to
that position for 25 years. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m.
Tuesday, Oct. 3, at the Robert D. Heath Funeral Home, Mount Union, with
the Rev. Rich Morris and the Rev. Jeff Winstead officiating. Interment
will be made in the Mount Union Cemetery.
