Mabel L. (Peightal) COFFMAN, 88, of 1500 Washington St., Huntingdon,
died Sunday, Sept. 2, 2001, at 1:05 am., at Huntingdon Manor, following
a brief illness. Born June 2, 1913, in Huntingdon, she was the daughter
of the late Harry Milton and Lilla Susanna (Shade) Peightal. She married
Jay Theodore Coffman Nov. 30, 1928, in Maryland, with the Rev. CR.
Stràusburg officiating. Mr. Coffman preceded her in death in March 1988.
Surviving are one son and one daughter: Jay 0. Coffman and Mrs. Thomas
(Pauline L.) Yarnell, both of Huntingdon, RD. 1. There are four
grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two
great-great-grandchildren. One brother, Richard Peightal of Huntingdon,
survives. She was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister:
William Peightal, Frederick M. Peightal Sr., and Anna (Peightal)
Mountain. She was also preceded in death by a brother and sister in
infancy: John and Mary Peightal. Mrs. Coffman was a member of the Stone
Church of the Brethren, Huntingdon. She attended the Huntingdon public
schools and retired from Owens Corning Fiberglas in Huntingdon, where
she was employed in the twist and ply department. She enjoyed bingo,
television, needlecraft and traveling. Funeral services will be held
Wednesday. Sept. 5, at 2 p.m., at the John B. Brown Funeral Home,
Huntingdon, with the Rev. Dale W. Dowdy and the Rev. Christy L. Dowdy
officiating. Interment will be made in the Huntingdon Memorial Gardens,
Walker Township. 

Althea R. O’DONNELL, 59, of 20280 Spring Run Road, Spring Run. died at
12:05 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 2. 2001, at her home. Born Dec. 23, 1941, in
Blairs Mills. she was the daughter of the late John L. and Dora
(Goshorn) Robinson. She married Harold L. O’Donnell April 1, 1961. Mr.
O’Donnell survives at home, along with the following children: Mrs.
Ricky (Trudy D.) Seibert, Shade Gap and Patricia Kurtz, Willow Hill.
There are four grandchildren and one great-grandson. Also surviving are
three sisters: Audrey Coons, Fannettsburg; Gloria Johnson, Orrstown;
Maxine Horn, Chambersburg. Two brothers, Chester Robinson of Dry Run and
Theron Robinson of Biglerville, also survive. Mrs. O’Donnell was a
member of Spring Run Bible Church where she sang in the choir. She
enjoyed growing flowers and crocheting. Early in her life, Mrs.
O’Donnell was employed by the former Stanley Co. in Chambersburg. She
then worked at the former U-Wanna-Wash Frock Co., Fort Loudon. Later she
was employed at Hoffman Mills, Inc. of Shippensburg. She had last worked
with Guardian In Home Care Services of Pennsylvania. Funeral services
will be held at 11 am. Wednesday, Sept. 5, at Spring Run Bible Church
with Pastor John E. Semple, the Rev. Marlin A. Neil and Darwin Goshorn
officiating. Interment will be made in Upper Path Valley Cemetery,
Fannett Township.

John F. YOCUM Sr., 87, of Newton Hamilton. died Monday, Sept 3, 2001, at
12:30 am., at Alterra Clare Bridge, State College, where he had resided
since March 2000. Born Dec. 22. 1913, in Alexandria. he was the son of
the late Amos and Grace (Corbin) Yocum. He married Evelyn M. Frye Dec.
21, 1940, in Alexandria, at the bride’s home. Mrs. Yocum preceded him in
death Feb. 7, 1993. Surviving are four sons: Harold A. Yocum, Edmond,
Okla.; John F Yocum, Palos Verdes, Calif.; James S. Yocum, Mapleton; and
David H. Yocum, Boalsburg. There are ten grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren Also surviving are two brothers, Richard C. Yocum of
Alexandria and Arthur L. "Pete" Yocum of Barree. He was preceded in
death by a sister, Mabel Eastep, and five brothers, Ralph, Wallace,
William, Russell and Cloyd Yocum. Mr. Yocum was a 1931 graduate of the
Alexandria High School. In the 1930s and 1940s, he was a milk tester and
dairy herdsman in Fulton, Bucks and Huntingdon counties. In 1950, he
attended the Pennsylvania State College Artificial Breeding Program and
subsequently worked for the Artificial Breeding Company, later Sire
Power. Inc., for 32 years. He was a member of the Newton-Wayne Lions
Club, Newton-Wayne Sportsman Club and Huntingdon County 4-H. A life
member of the National Rifle Association, he was a certified rifle
instructor and an avid sportsman. Funeral services will be held at 3
p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, at the Cutright-Speck Funeral Home, Juniata Valley
Chapel, 412 Main St., Alexandria, with the Rev. Robert J. Walsh
officiating. Interment will be made in the Alexandria Presbyterian
Cemetery. 

Lois J. SHAFER, 72, of Box 1652, RD. 3, Mount Union, died at 5:56 am.
Monday, Sept. 3, 2001, at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon. Her
death was unexpected. Born March 30, 1929, in Mount Union, she was the
daughter of the late Martin Shank and Mildred (David) Shank of the
Woodland Retirement Center, Orbisonia. She married Charles R. "Chuck"
Shafer Jr. Feb. 24, 1951. Mr. Shafer survives at home, along with three
children: Gloria "Peachy" Sipes of Shade Gap, Louann Shafer of
Petersburg and Robert C. Shafer of McVeytown, RD. 1, and a grandchild.
Also surviving is a sister, Marsha Whitsel of Shirleysburg, R.D. 1, and
two half-brothers, Martin Shank of Pittsburgh and Carl Shank of
Alexandria. She was preceded in death by brothers Ted Shank. Richard
"Dick" Shank and her stepmother, Elizabeth Lee Shank. Mrs. Shafer was a
member of St. Luke Lutheran Church, Mount Union. A 1948 graduate of
Mount Union High School, she had been employed at Yaffa Fabric Store in
Huntingdon, Robin Footwear in Mount Union and Weis Markets, Mount Union.
She was a member of the Green Street Bingo Players Association in Mount
Union and enjoyed knitting, sewing and crocheting. Funeral services will
be private, with Vicar Beth Costlow officiating. Interment will be made
in the Mount Union Cemetery. 

Phyllis H. WATSON, 80, of RD. 4, Box 329, Huntingdon, died Saturday,
Sept. 1, 2001, at her home. The widow of John Watson, she is survived by
three sons and a daughter: John P. Watson of York Springs, George D.
Watson of Huntingdon, Donald C. Watson of Hesston and Joanne Young of
Belleville. There are nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. One
sister, Jane I. Reihart of Hesston, survives. Mrs. Watson was of the
Methodist faith. She had worked as a machine operator at Owens Coming
Fiberglas. Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the
family. 

Margaret A. "Peggy" WRIGHT, 65, of Saxton, died at her residence
Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001. Born Sept. 18, 1935, in Robertsdale, she was the
daughter of the late Clifford and LaRue (Alloway) Leabhart. Her husband,
Ronald Wright, preceded her in death June 29, 1994. Surviving are a
daughter and a son: Mrs. Thomas (Sherry) Love, Wood, and Matt Wright,
Savannah, Ga. There are three grandchildren. Also surviving are the
following siblings: Mrs. Harry "Fuzz" (Nancy) Fessler. Dudley; Mrs.
William (Judy) Brode, Saxton; Terry Leabhart, Monroe, Mich.; and Mrs.
Rupert (Ruth) Laurel, Dayton, Ohio and Carol Miller. She was preceded in
death by three brothers and a sister: Richard, Gary, Ted and Reid
Alloway Mrs. Wright was of the Methodist faith. She enjoyed playing
bingo and was a member of the Captain Phillips VFW Ladies Auxiliary in
Saxton; the Six Mile Run America Legion Ladies Auxiliary, where she was
treasurer for several years; and the Saxton Sportsman Association. She
was employed as a presser at sewing factories in Mount Union and Saxton.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, at the Curtis
A. Heath Funeral Home, Broad Top, with Pastor Kathy Speck officiating.
Interment will be made in the Duvall Cemetery, Six Mile Run.

Elmer F. McCARTNEY, 86, of 160 Aspen Lane, Apt. 204, Huntingdon, died
Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001, at 12:30 am., at The Oaks at Westminster
Woods, Huntingdon. He had been in failing health for the past six
months. Born Oct. 29, 1914, in Huntingdon, he was the son of the late
Clyde W. and Percie (Hess) McCartney. He married Dorothy Smith Feb. 11,
1937, at the Fifteenth Street United Methodist Church, Huntingdon, with
the Rev. George Boggs officiating. Mrs. McCartney survives at home,
along with three nieces and four nephews. One sister, Mrs. Glenn W.
(Betty McCartney) Dore, is deceased. Mr. McCartney was a lifelong member
of the First Regular Baptist Church and served the church in numerous
capacities as a former Sunday School secretary, deacon and member of the
church bowling team. He was a member of Frank P Hommon American Legion
Post No. 24, Standing Stone VFW Post No. 1754, both of Huntingdon; was a
former Lions Club member; and a former firefighter with the Huntingdon
Hook and Ladder Fire Company. He was also a life member of the Juniata
Foundation for the Blind and was a member of the Huntingdon Country
Club. Mr. McCartney attended the Huntingdon public schools and graduated
from Huntingdon High School in 1932. He attended Juniata College prior
to his employment with The Daily News. He also completed numerous
correspondence and advertising courses. He was employed by Joseph F.
Biddle, founder of the modern Daily News, and his successors, John
Biddle, Joseph Biddle II and the current publishers, George and Marlene
Sample. He retired in 1976 as advertising director, but continued on a
part-time basis until 2000. During World War II, he served in the U.S.
Army in the European Theatre of Operations. While in the Army, he was
trained to be a cook and served aboard a tug boat and landing craft. At
the end of the war, he was assigned as a clerk in the American Theatre,
attaining the rank of Technician Fifth Grade. Mr. McCartney enjoyed
hunting, fishing, cards and house painting. Funeral services will be
held at 11 am. Saturday, Sept. 8, at the John B. Brown Funeral Home,
Huntingdon, with the Rev. David D. Oldham officiating. Interment will be
made in the Riverview Cemetery, Huntingdon. 

John W. MILLER, 65, of Orbisonia, was pronounced dead at approximately 2
p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, at his home. Born June 30, 1936, in
Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late John W. Miller and
Catherine Hawkins. He is survived by a daughter, Yvonne Wilson of
McVeytown and two grandsons. Mr. Miller was of the Protestant faith. He
was an active member of the Orbisonia-Rockhill Volunteer Fire Company
and its auxiliary functions and was also captain of the fire police. A
veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, he served from 1953 until 1961. He was
last employed by Martin Oil Co. and had previously worked at the Martin
General Store in Orbisonia. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m.
Friday, Sept. 7, at the Martin R. Brown Funeral Home. Orbisonia.
Interment will be made in the Orbisonia Cemetery.

Harry B. HALK, 82, a resident of the Hollidaysburg Veterans Home,
formerly of Saxton, RD.. died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001, at 4:35 p.m., at
the home, following an extended illness. Born May 1, 1919, in
Marklesburg, he was the son of the late David T. and Beatrice
(Brumbaugh) Halk. He married Anna 0. Louderbaugh April 9, 1938, in
Mapleton. Mrs. Halk survives at home, along with the following children:
Ronald L. Halk, Houston, Texas; Barbara J. Buchle, Austin. Texas; and A.
Jean Norris, Saxton, R.D. There are seven grandchildren and ten
great-grandchildren. One grandson is deceased. He is survived by two
brothers: Elmer A. Halk of Hershey and David B. Halk of Mount Union. Mr.
Halk was of the Protestant faith. During World War II, he served in the
U.S. Army Air Force from 1943 until 1945, attaining the rank of staff
sergeant. For several years he worked on construction projects and
retired in 1981 as an inspector for PennDOT after 11 years. A memorial
service will be held at the convenience of the family. Funeral
arrangements are under the direction of the D. Ronald Long Funeral
Chapel, Saxton. 

Charles Albert "Curly" BLOOM, 79, of Huntingdon, formerly of Pine Grove
Mills, died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001, at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital,
Huntingdon. Born Sept. 9, 1921, in Pine Grove Mills, he was the son of
the late Edna M. Bloom. He is survived by his wife, Joyce B. Bloom, whom
he married Feb. 9, 1944. Also surviving are a daughter and two sons:
Yvonne Caldwell, Mt. Laurel, N.J.; Charles Albert Bloom II, Mt. Holly,
NJ; and Craig A. Bloom, Hesston. There are four grandchildren. One
sister, Louise Rahn of Palmerton, survives. Mr. Bloom was a graduate of
the State College High School. He worked as an administrator for RCA in
Camden and Morristown, N.J. He previously owned an IGA grocery store in
Pine Grove Mills and had also worked for Ordinance Research and Penn
State and as a police officer for State College Borough. He enjoyed
photography, hunting, fishing and the outdoors. He also built his own
boat. During World War II, Mr. Bloom served in the U.S. Navy. Funeral
services will be held at 11 am. Monday, September 10 at the Koch Funeral
Home, State College, with the Rev. Steven C. Claycomb officiating.
Interment will be made in Centre County Memorial Park.

John R. PETERS of 1428 Moore St., Huntingdon, died Friday, Sept. 7,
2001. at 12:05 p.m., at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon,
following an extended illness. Born in Beaver Springs, Snyder County, he
was a son of the late Ira Hayes and Florence (Fleegal) Peters. He
married Esther Mae Wagner June 14, 1940, in Winchester, Va.. with the
Rev. H. Smith officiating. Mrs. Peters survives at home, along with two
sons: Samuel J. Peters of Huntingdon and Terry L. Peters of Vienna, Va.
There are three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and two
step-grandchildren. One son, Dennis Lee Peters, died in infancy. Four
sisters and a brother survive: Donna Rainey, Huntingdon; James Peters,
Vero Beach, Fla.; Leona Smith, Huntingdon; Helen McKinney, Martinsburg;
and Betty Anderson, Newark, Del. He was preceded in death by four
brothers and two sisters: Hayes Peters, Glenn Peters. Jack Peters,
Gladys Reed, Bill Querry and Evelyn Satta. Mr. Peters was a former
member of the Center Union Baptist Church and an active member of its
successor, the First Regular Baptist Church, Huntingdon, where he served
in numerous church offices. He attended the Saxton public schools and
was employed by Standard Steel Co. from 1939 until 1946. He retired from
Owens Corning Fiberglas after 30 years of service. Mr. Peters was a
member of the Fiberglas Retirees and Local No. 1034 at Owens Corning
Fiberglas in Huntingdon, and the H&H Hunting Camp. He enjoyed hunting,
fishing, flower and vegetable gardening and reading. Funeral services
will be held Monday, Sept. 10, at 11 am., at the John B. Brown Funeral
Home, Huntingdon, with the Rev. David D. Oldham officiating. Interment
will be made in the Riverview Cemetery, Huntingdon. 

Kathryn M. SHIRLEY, 86, of 341 Dairy Lane, Palmyra, formerly of
Huntingdon, died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001, at Twin Oaks Nursing Center,
where she had been a resident for four months. Prior to that she had
resided with her daughter in Palmyra for three years. Born Dec. 19,
1914, in Pogue, she was the daughter of the late Frederick S. Harris and
Edith B. (Chilcote) Harris Stapleton. She married Harold D. Shirley Feb.
24, 1936, in the Abbey Reformed Church, Huntingdon. Mr. Shirley preceded
her in death March 21, 1971. Surviving are two daughters and a son: Mrs.
Robert (Patricia Louise) Brennan of Saxton; Mrs. Charles E. (Earla
Jacqueline) Hoke III, Palmyra; and Marshall James Shirley Sr. There are
17 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and one
great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by a son, Walter
Eugene Harris. One half-brother, Ralph D. Stapleton of Mount Union,
survives. Three brothers and two sisters are deceased. Mrs. Shirley was
a life member of the Abbey Reformed Church in Huntingdon. She worked as
a machine operator at the former Huntingdon Silk Mill. She enjoyed
television game shows, crocheting and growing African violets. Memorial
services will be held Monday, Sept. 10, at 1 p.m., at the Abbey Reformed
Church UCC, Huntingdon. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of
the Taylor-Ruffner Funeral Home, Inc., 712 Chestnut St., Lebanon. 

Vivian Ann ELBERLING, 62, of 4645 SW 32nd Dr., Hollywood, Fla.. and a
resident of South Florida since 1969, died Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2001. Born
Oct. 3, 1938, in Huntingdon, she was the daughter of the late Blose Hall
and Cornett Lola (Stone) Yocum. Her husband, George Lewis Elberling,
died Dec. 3, 1992. Surviving are the following children: Linda Elberling
of Hollywood, Fla.; Michael Elberling Colorado Springs, Col.; Steven
Elberling, Hollywood. One son, Ricky, is deceased. She is survived by
her sister, Frances Stone, and a brother, George Stone, several nieces
and nephews. Funeral services will be held Sunday, Sept. 9, at 3:30
p.m., at the Robeu Greaver Funeral Home, Hallandale, Fla. 

Scott Eugene MULL, 26, of 1414 Bald Eagle Ave., Tyrone, died at 11:15
p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001, at Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital,
Johnstown. Born July 28, 1975, in Somerset, he was a son of Robert L.
"Dinks" and Dorothy A. "Sis" (Briggs) Mull. He married Julie Lingafelt
Oct. 2, 1999, in Tyrone. Surviving, along with his parents and wife, are
his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Chalmer Briggs Sr. of Alexandria, RD. 1;
a sister, Brenda F. Dietz of Williamsburg; and two brothers, Joseph L.
and Ruben L. Mull of Tyrone. Also surviving are five uncles, several
nieces and nephews. Mr. Mull was of the Protestant faith. He was a 1994
graduate of Tyrone Area High School, where he was active in baseball,
football and wrestling. He was a member of the Tyrone Neptune Fire
Company and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was the owner and champion
driver of Mull 12 Racing since 1994, winning 34 trophies. He was also
the operator of Tornado Towing Service in the area since 1997. Funeral
services will be held Monday, Sept. 10, at 11 am., at the Derman Funeral
Home, Tyrone, with Pastor James R. Kilmartin officiating. Interment will
be made in the Eastlawn Cemetery, Snyder Township. 

Harold E. LYTLE Sr., 79, of 6195 Roxbury Rd., Shippensburg, died
Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001, in the Chambersburg Hospital. Born Aug. 29,
1922, in Southampton Township, Franklin County, he was a son of the late
Robert A. and Ethel Jane (Clippinger) Lytle. He is survived by his.wife,
Nellie G. (Hardy) Lytle, whose family is from the Huntingdon area. Also
surviving are three sons and a daughter: Harold E. "Ernie" Lytle Jr.,
Enola; Dennis L. Lytle, Ted L. Lytle and Mrs. Stephen L. (Carole L.)
Kann, all of Shippensburg. There are 12 grandchildren, 16
great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Two brothers,
Robert F. Lytle and Glenn R. Lytle. both of Shippensburg, survive. He
was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister. Mr. Lytle was a
member of the Shippensburg First Church of God and its men’s Bible
class. A 1940 graduate of the Shippensburg High School, he graduated
from the Fort Trumball Engineering School in New London, Conn. He
retired from Letterkenny Army Depot in 1981, after 34 years of service.
A veteran of World War II, he served as an ensign in the Merchant
Marines. Mr. Lytle was a member of the Shippensburg Senior Citizens,
National Association of Retired Federal Employees, and the John W. Brown
Liberty Ship Association. Funeral services will be held Monday, Sept.
10, at 2 p.m., at the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, Shippensburg,
with the Rev. William J. Garling officiating. Interment will be made in
the Spring Hill Cemetery, Shippensburg. 

Donald F. Brant, 63, of Fort Littleton, died at 1:50 p.m. Friday, Sept.
7, 2001, at the Chambersburg Hospital. Born April 2, 1938, in Glenville,
he was a son of the late Merrill and Estella (Hamm) Brant. He married
Donna R. LeppoAug. 11, 1962. Mrs. Brant survives at home, along two
children: Gail Vandenburgh of Lantana, Fla., and Michael Leppo of Fort
Littleton. There are seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren
One daughter, Pamela Brant, is deceased. Three siblings survive: Merrill
Brant, Spring Grove; George Brant, Brodbecks; and Eleanor Warner, Cross
Keys. Two sisters preceded him in death. Mr. Brant was of the Protestant
faith. He was a member of the West Branch Sportsman’s Club, Kylertown,
and a life member of the Sons of the American Legion, Fort Loudon. He
was an avid hunter and sportsman. He retired from Hosteter Construction
Co. in Hanover after 15 years of service. Funeral services will be held
at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10, at the Black Rock Church of the Brethren,
Black Rock, with the Rev. Donald Hubbell officiating. Interment will be
made in the Chestnut Grove Cemetery, Jefferson. 

Ralph H. BEATY, 77, of the Huntingdon area, formerly of Yeadon, died
Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001. Born Jan. 7, 1924, he was the son of the late
William and Olive (Eckley) Beaty. He was preceded in death by his first
wife, Ethel M. Papolcy. His second wife, Lillian (Smith) Beaty, survives
at their home, along with three children: Mrs. Thomas (Patricia M.)
McElroy, New Jersey; Gene L. Beaty, Ohio; and R. K. Beaty, Delaware.
Also surviving are two stepsons, Jim and William Singleton. There are
nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mr. Beaty was a U.S.
Navy veteran of 20 years. A memorial service will be held Monday, Sept.
10, at 1 p.m., at the William H. Logan Funeral Home, 805 Longacre Blvd.,
Yeadon. Interment will be made in Fernwood Cemetery. 

Robert H. MARONEY, 71, of Greensburg, died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001, at
the Monsour Medical Center, Jeanette. Born June 9, 1930, in Pittsburgh,
he was the son of the late James Francis and Dorothy (Fellows) Maroney.
Mr. Maroney is survived by his wife of 53 years, the former Elizabeth
Sample; three daughters and a son: Mrs. Frederick (Lynne) Bayer,
Huntingdon; Kathleen Maroney, Washington, D.C.; Mrs. Richard (Patricia)
Greyson, Melborne, Fla; and James F. Maroney II, Washington, D.C. There
are 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Four cousins also
survive. Prior to his retirement, Mr. Maroney had been employed by the
Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Corrections as deputy
superintendent at the State Correctional Institution in Pittsburgh and
previously at the State Correctional Institution Huntingdon. He was a
member of the Greensburg BPOE Lodge No. 511. Funeral services will be
held Monday, at 10 am., at the Coshey-Nicholson Funeral Home, 319 W.
Pittsburgh St., Greensburg, with the Rev. Ralph Wagner officiating.
Interment will be made in the St. Clair Cemetery, Hempfield Township. 

Vivian Louise GOODNOUGH, 75, of RD. 3, Box 242, Huntingdon, died
Saturday, Sept. 8, 2001, at 7:30 am., at her home, following an extended
illness. Born Nov. 10, 1925, in Altoona, she was a daughter of the late
Paul Wesley and Martha Marie (McMullen) Miller. She is survived by her
longtime companion, Michael J. Cunningham Jr. at home, and a brother,
Dennis Henry of Kistler. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Emma Lynn, and a brother. Paul W.
"Junior" Miller Ms. Goodnough was a waitress at the VFW in Franklinville
for 17 years and had also worked at Crown Cork & Seal in Baltimore, Md.,
and Letterkenny Army Depot for ten years. A graduate of Warriors Mark
High School, she was well known for raising peacocks in the Ardenheim
area. She was a member of the National Peacocks Association and enjoyed
ice fishing and deer hunting. Funeral services will be private at the
convenience of the family. 

Eldon Henry HAWN, 81, of R.R. 2, Box 216, Petersburg. died Saturday,
Sept. 8. 2001, at 5:45 p.m., at The Oaks at Westminster Woods,
Huntingdon. He had been in failing health for the past month. Born Sept.
10, 1919, in West Township, Huntingdon County, he was a son of the late
C. Oscar and Jennie (Green) Hawn. He married Lois Hollinger March 17,
1956, at the First Methodist Church in Huntingdon, with the Rev. G.
Cecil Weimer officiating. Mrs. Hawn survives at home, along with two
nieces and three nephews. Four brothers and one sister preceded him in
death: G. Harold Hawn, Robert G. Hawn, Charles 0. Hawn, Donald J. Hawn
and Hazel C. Hawn. Mr. Hawn was a member of the Manor Hill United
Methodist Church, Huntingdon, R.D. 2, where he was active in the Tri Mu
Sunday School Class and was a former Sunday School superintendent. A
1937 graduate of Petersburg Vocational High school, he was a partner
with his brothers in the Hawn Brothers Farms in West Township. During
World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in the European Theatre of
Operations. He was inducted April 9, 1941, and honorably discharged Oct.
5, 1945. He attained the rank of corporal in the 28th Division, while
serving for years in combat. Mr. Hawn was a former secretary of the
Mooresville Cemetery Association and was a former member of the board of
the Huntingdon County Agricultural Association. He enjoyed spending time
with his family. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday,
Sept. 12, at the John B. Brown Funeral Home, Huntingdon, with the Rev.
Joleen A. Willis officiating. Interment will be made in the Mooresville
Cemetery, West Township, Petersburg. 

Karen Ann RUGH, 58, of Spruce Creek, died Friday, Sept. 7, 2001, at
Centre Community Hospital, State College, following a brief illness.
Born March 5, 1943, in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of the late
Willard Deibler Zimmerman and Mary Belle (Campbell) Zimmerman, who
survives in Foxdale Village, State College. One brother, Lawrence Ralph
Zimmerman of Felton, Calif., survives. Ms. Rugh had attended the Sunbury
High School and graduated from Penn State University in 1965. >From
1966-1967, she worked as a freelance writer for the News-Citizen in
Vandergrift. The next year, she was an instructor in agriculture
communications for the College of Agriculture at Penn State and was a
part of a teaching team for agricultural education. From 1978 until
1985, she was the manager of the campus relations department of public
information and relations at Penn State. Between 1986-1988, she was
director of public events and campus relations. She had been employed by
the university as director of university relations since 1988. She
managed the University Park employee campaign for United Way, was a
member of the board and president of Lion Country Visitors and
Convention Bureau from 1985-1995. She had been a member of the State
College Chamber of Commerce public relations committee from 1986 until
her death; she was a member of the Commission for Women at Penn State;
and from 1986 until 1989, she was a member of the Pennsylvania Angus
Auxiliary, where she also served as president. Ms. Rugh had also served
on the board of directors of Eden Hill Conservancy and Centre/Clinton
Crop Management Association. A memorial service will be held Friday,
Sept. 14, at 12:30 p.m., at the Eisenhower Chapel, Penn State Campus. 

Joe Alan ATHERTON, 36, of McVeytown, R.D. 1, died at 10:45 am. Friday,
Sept. 7, 2001, at the Lewistown Hospital, following a brief illness.
Born Feb. 22, 1965, in Cedar Crest, Wayne Township, Mifflin County, he
was the son of Charles and Norma (Parsons) Atherton of 3 Pin Oak Lane,
Mount Union. Along with his parents, he is survived by his paternal
grandmother, Dorothy Atherton of Mount Union, RD. 1, and the following
brothers and sisters: Marian Benson, McVeytown, RD. 1; Charles Atherton
Jr., HCR 1, Huntingdon; Julia Covert, Three Springs, RD. 1; and Jeff
Atherton, Shirleysburg, RR. 1. A number of nieces and nephews survive.
One brother, Todd Atherton, preceded him in death. A graveside funeral
service was held Sunday, at the Mount Union Cemetery, with Pastor Jeff
Winstead officiating. 

Thelma L. (Brumbaugh) BAKER, 78, of the Morrisons Cove Home,
Martinsburg, formerly of Williamsburg, R.R. 2, died Thursday, Sept. 6,
2001, at the home, following an extended illness. Born May 9, 1928, she
was a daughter of the late Paul A. Sr. and Ruth (Allison) Brumbaugh. She
married J. Calvin Baker June 6, 1944, at Fairview Church of the
Brethren, Williamsburg, R.R. 2. Mr. Baker survives at home, along with
five children: William Baker, Williamsburg, R.R. 2; Mrs. Robert (Carol)
Wasson, State College; Larry Baker, Loretto; Mrs. William (Linda)
Messersmith, Mertztown; and Norma Baker, of Wilmington, N.C. There are
ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a
sister, Margaret Sollenberger of Williamsburg, R.R. 2, and two brothers,
Paul F Brumbaugh Jr. and Mervin Brumbaugh, both of Williamsburg, R.R.
One brother, Allison Brumbaugh. preceded her in death. Mrs. Baker was an
active member of the Fairview Church of the Brethren for 60 years, where
she served as deacon, church board member, commission member and was
active in the Women’s Fellowship. She was also a Sunday School teacher,
pianist, choir and cantata member and a vocalist along with her sister,
Margaret. On the district level, she had served as a conference delegate
and as an adult cabinet member. Prior to her marriage, she was employed
by Rhule’s Restaurant and Westvaco, both in Williamsburg. The Bakers
spent their married years working on the family dairy farm, purchased in
1945. Mrs. Baker was a great supporter of the Morrisons Cove Home. She
was past president and active member of the Morrisons Cove Home
Auxiliary for the past 30 years. She was also the Morrisons Cove Home
representative for the Fairview Church for several years. She became a
resident of the home during the past two years. She was well known for
her cooking, baking and quilting. She won numerous awards, including
best of show and many blue ribbons for her creations. Along with her
responsibilities as farm wife and mother, she was very active in the
church and community. She was a member of the Williamsburg Civic Club,
Scotch Valley Grange and the Morrisons Cove Republican Club. She also
served six years on the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau State Ladies Committee
and was finishing a 20-year term as majority inspector for the Huston
Township Board of Elections. Funeral services were held at 11 am.
September 11, at the Fairview Church of the Brethren, Williamsburg, R.R.
2, with Pastor Eric J. Fether and Pastor Floyd H. Mitchell officiating.
Interment was made at the Fairview Cemetery, Martinsburg. 

Howard Lynn "J.J." HESS, 25, of 123 Snyder Lane, Hustontown, formerly of
Saxton, died Saturday, Sept. 8, 2001, at 3:25 a.m., as a result of an
auto accident along Route 26, in Broad Top Township. Born Oct. 15, 1975,
in Roaring Spring, he was a son of Albert Leroy and Gayle Louise
(Beaver) Hess of Hustontown. Surviving, along with his parents, are twin
daughters Vivian Gayle and Cora Renee Hess. Also surviving are the
following brothers and sisters: Scott Alan Hess and Martin Albert Hess,
both of McConnellsburg, and Nancy Ellen Wright, Shippensburg. A
half-sister, Dawn Renee Monda of Montua, Ohio, survives. Mr Hess was a
member of the Freedom Worship Center in Fort Littleton. He had attended
Tussey Mountain High School and was employed by Pennlines, where he
operated a bucket truck and chipper. He was a member of the Broad Top
Area Sportsman Association and enjoyed mechanical work on vehicles.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. September 11, at the D. Ronald
Long Funeral Chapel, Saxton, with Pastor Kevin Wade officiating. 

Raymond Junior GOSS, 78, of RD. 2, Box 424, Petersburg, died Sunday,
Sept. 9, 2001, at 10:40a.m., at his residence. His death was unexpected.
Born June 2. 1923, in Mount Union, he was a son of the late Raymond
Joseph and Nellie Grace (Clark) Goss. He married Anna Ciambotti Aug. 6,
1949, at the Holy Rosary Church in Juniata, Altoona, with Monsignor
McNeilis officiating. Mrs. Goss survives at home, along with three sons
and a daughter: Raymond L. Goss, Ernest J. Goss, Robert L. Goss and Rose
M. (Goss) Butler, all of Petersburg. There are 11 grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren. Two sisters survive: Marian (Goss) Collins,
Huntingdon and Doris (Goss) Bainbridge, Waterford. One sister, Louise
(Goss) Hoffman. preceded him in death. Mr. Goss was a member of the Most
Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Huntingdon. A 1942 graduate of the
Petersburg Vocational High School, he worked as a mechanic in the
Huntingdon area. He was employed as a guard for Pinkerton at Mead
Corporation and had also farmed. He was a member of the Cloyd K. Davis
Post No. 150, American Legion. Petersburg; the Petersburg Fire Company;
and BPOE Lodge No. 976, Huntingdon. Mr. Goss enjoyed going to the
Hesston Speedway and reading. A funeral Mass will be held Wednesday,
Sept. 12, at 1 p.m., at the Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church,
Huntingdon, with the Rev. David J. Arseneault officiating. Interment
will be made in the Huntingdon Memorial Gardens, Huntingdon, RD. 1. 

Michael H. TREE, 43, of Harrisburg, died at 8:20 am. Thursday, Sept. 6,
2001, in the Harrisburg Hospital. Born Oct. 16, 1957, in Huntingdon, he
was the son of Evelyn (Fogal) Tree of Mount Union and the late Anthony
Tree. Surviving, in addition to his mother, are a brother, Mark Tree of
Cleveland, Ohio, and a sister, Mrs. Anthony (Michele) Payne of
Petersburg. Two nephews, Wayne and Greg, also survive. The deceased was
a member of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church in Harrisburg. He
graduated from Mount Union Area High School in 1975 and attended
Elizabethtown College and Harrisburg Area Community College. He became
manager of the former Penn Square Marriott Restaurant in Harrisburg.
Later, he accepted a position as supervisor of off premise catering for
Casa Rillo Restaurant. He served as director of catering at the Ramada
Hotel and later at the Holiday Inn. Arrangements are being made by the
Cremation Society of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg. Private services will
be held at the convenience of the family. 

Donna L. PAINTER, 62, of R.R. 3, Box 1569, Mount Union, died at 9:50 am.
Sunday, Sept. 9, 2001, at her home, following an extended illness. Born
Aug. 18, 1939, in Huntingdon, she was the daughter of the late Robert
John McGee and Margaret 0. (Brown) McGee of Mount Union. She married
Orlando "Crud" Painter May 18, 1967, in Hagerstown, Md. Along with her
mother and husband, she is survived by three daughters: Connie Landon of
Hampton, Va,; Cheryl Hummel, HC 1, Huntingdon; and Cathy Barnett of HCR
73, Three Springs. There are nine grandchildren. One daughter, Carol Jo
Larnberson, preceded her in death. Three sisters survive; Shirley Jacka,
Mount Union, RD. 1; Margaret "Peggy" Whitsel, Three Springs, RD. 1; and
Gloria Kenney, Mechanicsburg. Mrs. Painter was a member of the New Life
Fellowship Church of God, Mount Union, RD. 1. where she taught Sunday
School for many years. A 1957 graduate of Captain Jack High School, she
had been employed by the former G. C. Murphy Store, Aunt Jane’s Kitchen
and Himes Jewelers in Mount Union. She also worked at Poser’s Other
Corner Store in Huntingdon and the Daily News Mount Union office. She
loved flowers and bird watching, especially hummingbirds, and collecting
Boyds Bears. Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m.	Wednesday, Sept.
12, at the New Life Fellowship Church, Mount Union, R.D. 1, with the
Rev. Dayton Sines officiating. Interment will be made in the Haven Rest
Memorial Park, Shirleysburg, R.D. 1. 

Kenneth R. "Whitey" NONEMAKER, 48, of Shade Gap, died Friday, Sept. 7,
2001, in Shreveport, La. Born March 10, 1953, in Huntingdon, he was a
son of the late Kenneth R. and Donna Nonemaker. He is survived by his
companion, Jane E. Cramer at home, a daughter. Angela S. Lounis, and two
grandchildren of Carthage. Mo. Mr. Nonemaker had attended the Grace
United Methodist Church in Three Springs. For many years, he had served
as fire chief at the Three Springs Volunteer Fire Company and more
recently was active in the Shade Gap Volunteer Fire Company. He was
employed by Gravytrain Express Trucking Co. in McVevtown for the past
three years. Prior to that, he was employed by Wible’s Concrete, Mount
Union, for 20 years. Funeral services will be held at 11 am, Saturday,
Sept. 15, at the Martin R. Brown Funeral Home. Orbisonia, with the Rev.
David Ford officiating. Interment will be made in the Burnt Cabins
Cemetery. 

Jerry L. ROGERS, 48, of HCR 61, Shade Gap. died at 1:20 am, Tuesday,
Sept. 1l, 2001, at his home. Born Dec. 13, 1952, in Huntingdon, he was a
son of Fred and Wanda (Hoffman) Rogers, who survive in Rockhill Furnace.
He was married to Rose M. Cisney Jan. 17, 1998, in McConnellsburg. Mrs.
Rogers survives at home, along with four children: Michael Rogers,
Pittsburgh; Christina Rogers, Saltillo; Miranda Rogers and Joseph
Rogers, both of Shade Gap. Three stepchildren survive: Gerald Anderson,
David Anderson and Lacie Anderson, all of Three Springs. One
granddaughter and two step-granddaughters survive. Mr. Rogers is also
survived by the following siblings: Fred Rogers Jr.. Rockhill Furnace;
Bonnie Rogers. McVeytown; Boyd Rogers, Imperial, Mo.; Wayne Rogers,
Mount Union; Arnold Rogers. Waynesboro; and Bobbi Jo Stever, Mount
Union. Mr. Rogers had been employed by Henkels & McCoy, Inc., York, for
the last 18 years. Before that, he was employed by MAC. Contractors in
New Albany for seven years. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m.
Thursday. Sept. 13, at the Martin R. Brown Funeral Home, Orbisonia, with
the Rev. Rick Eminhizer officiating. Interment will be made in the IOOF
Memorial Cemetery, Rockhill Furnace. 

Wilbert I. ‘Wimp" McCARTNEY, 63, of 24 W. Pennsylvania Ave., Mount
Union. died at 10:24 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, at the Geisinger
Medical Center, Danville. Born June 12, 1938, in Shirley Township,
Huntingdon County, he was a son of Harry W. and Martha (Brenneman)
McCartney, who reside at Shirleysburg, RD. 1. He was united in marriage
to Hilda E. Longenecker Nov. 6, 1957, at the Allenport United Methodist
Church. Surviving along with his parents and wife, are the following
children: Marty Eichelberger, Huntingdon; Hilda McCartney, Mount Union,
RD. 1; Peg Skipper, Huntingdon; Wilma Kelley, Cedar Crest, Mount Union,
R.D. 1; Wilbert I. McCartney Jr., Mapleton; and Jackie McCartney, Mount
Union. There are 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. The
following brothers and sisters also survive: Carl McCartney, Huntingdon;
Mary Kauffman, McVeytown; Nancy Knable, Newton Hamilton; Ronald
McCartney, Shirleysburg, RD. 1; Donald McCartney, Mount Union, RD. 2;
Jack McCartney, Three Springs; Connie Forshey, Mount Union, R.D. 1;
Daniel McCartney, Mill Creek; Helen Heffner, Huntingdon; and Susan
Martin, McVeytown. One brother, Robert McCartney, preceded him in death.
Mr. McCartney attended the Mount Union schools and was a veteran of the
U.S. Army. He worked as a truck driver for 32 years, most recently for
Superservice in Beavertown and Wilson Freight Co. He was a member of the
Mount Union VFW Post, the Rockhill American Legion and the Mill Creek
Fire Company. Funeral services will be held at 11 am. Saturday, Sept.
15, at the Robert D. Heath Funeral Home, Mount Union, with Pastor
Stephen Motter officiating. Interment will be made in the Mount Union
Cemetery. 

C. Mae (Hoffman) Willison REES, 89, of Pennknoll Village, Bedford,
formerly of Saxton. died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, at Pennknoll Village,
following an extended illness. Born July 6, 1912, in Little Valley,
Saxton, RD., she was a daughter of the late Sylvester and Elizabeth
(Lowry) Hoffman. She married Victor Willison and later Lloyd Rees. Both
husbands preceded her in death. Surviving are three children: Ronald
Willison of Virginia Beach, Va. Gary Willison of Saxton; and Mrs. Jim
(Darla) Fox, also of Saxton. There are six granddaughters and seven
great-grandchildren. One grandson and one great-granddaughter are
deceased. Mrs. Rees was the last surviving member of her immediate
family. She had attended St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church and was active in
the Saxton Senior Citizens. She was primarily a homemaker and had also
worked for Tussey Mountain School District. She loved to cook and do
crafts. Memorial services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Eugene B. "Stu" IRVIN Sr., 80, of Valley View Haven, Belleville,
formerly of Stone Valley, died at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2001 at
Hershey Medical Center. Born Dec. 26, 1920 in Altoona, he was a son of
the late James S. and Lillian J. (McMullen) Irvin. His wife Ruth E.
(Kelly) Irvin preceded him in death on April 25, 1995. Surviving are: a
daughter and son, Pamela J. Seiler, State College and Eugene B. Irvin
Jr., Belleville; brothers and sisters, Florine Burkholder and Rita Gray,
both of York, James S. Irvin Jr., Cleveland, OH, Mrs. John (Thelma)
Reish, New Kensington and Mrs. Brian (Anna M.) Hummel, Altoona; two
grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was a United States Army
Air Force veteran of World War II, having served from 1943 to 1946. He
retired in 1983 from Sperry New Holland after 30 years of service
working as an inspector. He was a member of the Sacred Heart of Jesus
Catholic Church, Lewistown, and also a member of the American Legion
Post 245 of State College. He was also a life-member of the Belleville
Fire Company. He was an avid hunter and he served on the Belleville
Firemen's Festival Committee for years and coached the Belleville
Indians in Little League. A Mass Christian Burial will be held at 10:30
a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, Lewistown, with
Rev. Lawrence R. Coakly officiating. Interment will be in St. Stephens
Lutheran Cemetery, McAlevy's Fort. 

Guy D. GLUNT, 89, Carlisle and formerly of Knobsville, died Friday,
September 7, 2001 in the Carlisle Regional Medical Center. Born July 4,
1912 in Knobsville, he was the son of the late Jacob and May (Mock)
Glunt. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, the former Blanche Krugh,
and a brother, Reynolds Glunt of Carlisle. He was preceded in death by a
sister, Mary Woods, and three brothers: Paul, Malcolm and Willis Glunt.
He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church, the Lamara Club
and the Golden Age Club, all of Carlisle. He was a retired employee of
Carlisle Tire & Rubber and a farmer in Cumberland County. He was an Army
veteran of World War II. Funeral services were held in Carlisle. Burial
was made in the Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens in West Pennboro
Township. 

Nancy A. DRAKE, 49, of the Grier School, Birmingham, died Wednesday,
Sept. 12, 2001, at her home. Born Sept. 21, 1951, in Ann Arbor, Mich.,
she was a daughter of Donald J. and Marian A. (Yeager) Merchant of
Virginia Beach, Va. She married Dale A. Drake June 23, 1973, in Lake
Placid, N.Y. Surviving, along with her parents and husband, are a
sister, Karen R. Boecker of Baltimore, Md., and a brother. Barry S.
Merchant of Richmond, Va. Mrs. Drake received her bachelor’s degree from
Juniata College and her master’s degree from Bankstreet College in New
York. She had been employed as an art Leacher at the Grier School for 21
years. She was a member of the Birmingham Presbyterian Church and the
adult Sunday School class of the church. She enjoyed collecting dolls
and art objects. A memorial service will be held Saturday. Sept. 15, at
2 p.m., at the Birmingham Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Barry Vance
and Terry Buckel officiating. Funeral arrangements are under the
direction of the Richard H. Scarer Funeral Home, Inc. 

Adele I. McQUAIT, 36, Harrisonville, died Friday morning, September 14,
2001 along Route 475 in Dublin Township, Fulton County, near Hustontown.
Death was due to injuries sustained in an auto accident. Born September
20, 1964 at McConnellsburg, she was a daughter of William C. and
Gaynelle (Fletcher) Hall, who survive of RD, McConnellsburg. She was
married to Max H. McQuait, Jr., January 15, 1983 at Burnt Cabins. He
survives at their home. Also surviving are a son, Max H. McQuait, III
and a daughter, Erin Lynn McQuait, both at home; a sister, Colleen
Kelly, Mont Alto, PA; two brothers: Neal Hall, Maddensville and Myron
Hall, McConnellsburg; a half-brother, William Charles Hall, Jr., West
Virginia and a half-sister, Betty Jo Wardell, Virginia. She had attended
the Fair Ridge Assembly of God Church, Shade Gap. She was a 1982
graduate of Forbes Road High School and was employed at MacDonald’s
Pharmacy for the last fifteen years. Funeral services were held at 2:00
p.m. Monday, September 17 at the M.R. Brown Funeral Home, Hustontown.
Rev. Belvy White and Rev. Wilson Boyd officiated. Burial was made at
Clear Ridge Cemetery, Hustontown. 

Harry Eugene "Gene" PORTER, 70, of 402 East 26th Avenue, Altoona, died
at 11 am. Friday, Sept. 14, 2001, at Altoona Hospital. Born Oct. 30,
1930, in Huntingdon, he was the son of the late Robert H. and Ida
Pauline (Anders) Porter. He was married to Nancy J. Vargo Aug. 23, 1972,
in Cambria County by James B. Gallardy. Mrs. Porter survives at home. A
daughter. Mrs. Randy (Wendy) Dukeman of Altoona, survives along with a
son, Robert E. Porter of Raleigh, NC. A sister, Mrs. John (Evelyn R.)
Smith of Harrisburg, also survives. There is one granddaughter. Mr.
Porter was a member of United Transportation Union Local #632 in
Altoona. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying both hunting and fishing.
He was a graduate of the Huntingdon public school system. He served
during the Korean Conflict with the U.S. Air Force Headquarters &
Headquarters Squadron of the 28th Air Base Group from Nov. 4, 1947, to
Nov. 27, 1951. He retired on March 16, 1992, from Conrail after more
than 38 years of service with the company and its predecessors
Pennsylvania Railroad and Penn Central Railroad. He worked as a
conductor. Mr. Porter had lived in Altoona since 1974 and at his current
home for the past nine years. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m.
Monday, Sept. 17, at the Huntingdon Memorial Gardens, Walker Township,
R.D. 1, Huntingdon with Rev. John D. Leatherman officiating. Interment
will be in Huntingdon Memorial Gardens with full military honors
observed at graveside. 

Teresa Barbarulo COPENHAVER, 71, of 11 S. Division St., Mount Union,
died at 8:30 am. Friday, Sept. 14, 2001 at her home. She had been in
failing health. Born Nov. 6, 1929 in Lancaster, she was the daughter of
John and Florence (Garuffi) Barbarulo. She married John C. Copenhaver
July 1, 1950 in Hagerstown. Md. He died March 5, 1996. Mrs. Copenhaver
is survived by two daughters: Valerie Copenhaver of Huntingdon and
Stephanie Zeigler of Harmony. One brother, Guy Barbarulo, preceeded her
in death. A sister, Johanna Smyers of Lewistown, also survives. There
are three grandchildren. Mrs. Copenhaver was of the Catholic faith. She
graduated from Mount Union High School in 1948. She retired from Mead
Corp., Alexandria. Prior to her employment there, she worked at Juniata
College in Huntingdon and Industrial Hardwood Corp. in Shirley Township.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday. Sept. 18, at 11 am. at the Robert
D. Heath Funeral Home, Mount Union, with Rev. Fr. Elwood Figurelle
officiating. Interment will be made in St. Catherine’s Cemetery. 

Helen B. GARVER, 87, of R.R. 2. Box 21, Allenport, Mount Union, died at
3:08 p.m. Saturday. Sept. 15, 2001, at the Woodland Retirement Center,
Orbisonia.
Born Nov. 7, 1913, in Shirley Township, Huntingdon County, she was a
daughter of the late B. Frank and Jennie (Ryder) Garver.
She is survived by her only niece, Jayne Book of Port Royal. She was
preceded in death by three sisters: Mabel G. Garver, Arlene Shields and
Anna Garver.
Miss Garver was a 1931 graduate of Mount Union High School and retired
from L. Greif Brothers Manufacturing in Mount Union, following many
years of service.
She was a member of the Sugar Run Church of the Brethren, Mount Union,
R.R. 1.
The funeral service will be held at 11 am. Wednesday, Sept. 19, at the
Robert D. Heath Funeral Home, Mount Union. with the Rev. James Hullihen
officiating. 
Interment will be made in the Germany Valley Cemetery, Shirleysburg,
R.R. 1.

William Robert Smaltz Sr., 83. sd Fodav. Sept. 14, 2001, at his home in
NC.
Born March 17, 1918, in Aliquippa, he was a son of the late Annie and
Edward Smaltz.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Betty, one son and a daughter:
Bill Smaltz Jr. of Wake Forest, NC., and Ann Rivenbark of Boiling Spring
Lakes. There are three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Sheetz and a brother,
Jack Smaltz.
Mr. Smaltz was a retired football coach, who began his career in 1946 as
the assistant coach at Juniata Colege in Huntingdon. He served as head
football. baseball and junior varsity basketball coach at Juniata from
1947 until 1954. In 1954, he moved to Raleigh, NC., where he served as
an assistant football coach to Earle Edwards at North Carolina State
University until 1972. He retired in 1981.
Mr. Smaltz played in the East-West Shrine football game in 1942.
He was inducted into the Aliquippa High School Sports Hall of Fame in
Beaver County, and the Juniata College Sports Hall of Fame.
A memorial service was held September 17 at the Mitchell Funeral Home in
Raleigh. N.C. 
A celebration of life service will be held in Huntingdon at a later
date.

Karen Sue BAKER, 55, of Porter Township. RD. 1, Box 216, Huntingdon,
died Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2001, at 3 a.m., at her home.
Born Feb. 19, 1946, in Lewistown, she was a daughter of the late Joseph
Sr. and Myra (Zeider) Wagner. She married Francis L. Baker Sept. 26,
1975, in Virginia.
Surviving, along with her husband. are four children: Deanna Pinkham. El
Dorado. Ark.; Vanessa
Gahagan. State College; James Gahagan Jr.. Yeagertown; and Christopher
Gahagan, Lewistown.
There is one granddaughter.
Also surviving are the following siblings: Joseph Wagner Jr..
Yeagertown; Dora Jane Stewart, Lewistown; Mary Ruble, McClure; James
Wagner and George Wagner, both of Lewistown.
Mrs. Baker was of the Protestant faith.
She was primarily a homemaker.
Funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family. 
Interment will be made in the Huntingdon Memorial Gardens, Huntingdon.

Hanna E. NORRIS, 101, formerly of Orbisonia, died at 8 p.m. Thursday,
Sept. 13, 2001, at the Woodland Center for Nursing, Lewisberry.
Born Aug. 20, 1900, in Mount Union. she was a daughter of the late
William and Rhoda (Robinson) McElwee. She was first married to Isaac
Horn, who preceded her in death. She later married David James Norris,
who also preceded her in death.
Surviving are four children: Frank Horn and Marguirette Norris, both of
Mount Union, Phyllis (Norris) Spangler, Newark, Del.; and Constance
(Norris) Ressler, Orbisonia. There are 12 grandchildren, 18
great-grandchildren and ten great-great-grandchildren.
Five children, one sister, Zada, and three brothers, James, Charles and
Blair. are deceased.
Mrs. Norris was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church, New
Castle, Del., and had attended the Orbisonia United Methodist Church.
She was employed by Greif Brothers Manufacturing in Mount Union for many
years.
A memorial service will be held at 11 am. Tuesday, Sept. 25, at the
Martin R. Brown Funeral Home, Orbisonia, with Kenneth Scott and the Rev.
Rick Eminhizer officiating. 

Karen F. Wright ROTHWEILER, 50, of 270 Standing Stone Ave., Huntingdon,
passed away Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, at 5:40 p.m., at J.C. Blair Memorial
Hospital, Huntingdon.
Born Sept. 18, 1950, in Huntingdon, she was a daughter of the late Blair
W. Wright and Donna L. (Wright) Wright. who survives in Calvin. She
married Roger J. Rothweiler Feb. 19, 2000, at the Calvin United
Methodist Church, with Pastor Donald Henderson officiating.
Mr. Rothweiler survives at home. along with two stepchildren: Wendy J.
Rothweiler of Marietta and William C. Rothweiler of Lancaster.
One son, Jason Wade Wright, preceded her in death.
Several brothers and sisters survive: R. Wayne Wright, East Earl; Barry
B. Wright, Huntingdon; Curtis B. Wright, Goodlettsville, Tenn.; Lorry E.
Hicks, Calvin; Graham F. Wright. Lewistown; and Jennifer W. Weir. James
Creek.
Mrs. Rothweiler was a member of the Calvin United Methodist Church.
She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary and Home Association of
Standing Stone Post 1754. VFW, Ladies Auxiliary of Frank P Hommon Post
24, American Legion, and Women of the Moose Chapter 220, all of
Huntingdon.
She was employed as a sales associate for Heilig-Meyers in Huntingdon
and later worked as a bartender at Kelly’s Korner in Smithfield
Township. Most recently she was a club manager at the Huntingdon VFW
Post.
Mrs. Rothweiler was a 1968 graduate of Captain Jack High School.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Sept. 21, at 11 am., at the Robert
E. Peters Funeral Home, Huntingdon, with Pastor Donald Henderson
officiating. 
Interment will be made in the Wright Cemetery, Calvin.

Ruth V. HECKATHORN, 86, of 340 Ridge Rd., Newton Falls, Ohio, a former
resident of Newburg and James Creek, RD., died Sept. 9, 2000, at the
Carolina Medical Center in Charlotte, NC., while she was visiting her
son in the Charlotte area. Born Sept. 1, 1915, in Mount Rock, she was a
daughter of the late Charles and Myrtle Mae (Gross) Ripple. She married
Alfred J. Hall Feb. 23, 1936, at the Newburg Methodist Church. He
preceded her in death March 27, 1967. Her second husband, Clarence
Heckathorn, also preceded her in death. Surviving are the following
children: Alfred J. Hall Jr. and Mrs. Arthur (Audrey) Edwards, both of
North Jackson, Ohio: Mrs. Harry (Bertha) Baker of Girard, Ohio; Daniel
Hall of Charlotte, NC.; and Dexter Hall, Indianapolis Ind. Also
surviving are three stepchildren: Mrs. Herbert (Juliann) Holland of
Huntingdon: Mrs. Arthur (Catherine) Reed of Homer City; and Mrs. Max
(Eleanor) Ruby, Canfield, Ohio. There are several grandchildren,
great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in
death by three sons: Harold, Chester and Lester. One brother, Richard
Ripple of Manheim, survives. Two sisters and two brothers preceded her
in death: Mrs. Walter (Marion) Heath, Sarah Ripple, Charles and Carl
Ripple. Mrs. Heckathorn’s family resided in Robertsdale and she attended
the Robertsdale schools. She attended the General Assembly Church of God
in Newton Falls, Ohio. She was primarily a homemaker and had worked in
the cafeteria in the North Jackson School system and the General Motors
Plant in Lordstown, Ohio. A funeral service was held Sept. 12, in
Austintown, Ohio. A grave-side service was held Sept. 13, in the Newburg
Cemetery, with her brother, the Rev. Richard Ripple officiating. 

Ellen W. HAMILTON, 96, formerly of 712 Crawford Apartments, Huntingdon,
died Tuesday, Sept. 18, at her home at 898 Oswego Ave., Sebastian, Fla..
following a lengthy illness. Born June 11, 1905, in Entriken, she was a
daughter of the late George T. and Flora (Donelson) Woomer. She married
Lloyd E. Hamilton Aug. 13, 1927 in Detroit, Michigan. He preceded her in
death May 1, 1985. Surviving are a daughter, Sybil R.Touchberry of
Sebastian, FIa., tour grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Also
surviving is her twin sister, Anna Waugerman of Manns Choice. Three
brothers and four sisters preceded her in death. Mrs. Hamilton was a
member of the 15th Street United Methodist Church in Huntingdon and the
Roseland United Methodist Church in Roseland, Fla. She was a member of
the O. R. Shilling Sunday School Class and United Methodist Women of her
church in Huntingdon. She was primarily a homemaker. Funeral services
will be held Saturday, Sept. 22, at 2 p.m., at the Robert F. Peters
Funeral Home, Huntingdon, with the Rev. David L. Dearing officiating.
Interment will be made in the Dudley Protestant Cemetery, Dudley. 

Paul Keiser SECHRIST, 84, of Somerset, died Tuesday, September 18, 2001
at his residence. Born May 17, 1917, in Newton Hamilton, he was the son
of the late Thomas Francis and Lura Sara (Keiser) Sechrist. He is
survived by a sister, Josephine Davis, of Glenn Burnie, Md., three
nephews, one great-nephew, two nieces, and two great-nieces. He was
preceded in death by his parents and two sisters: Bernadine Sechrist and
Catherine "Betty" Myers Mr. Sechrist was a member of St. Francis in the
Fields Episcopal Church in Somerset. A 1936 graduate of Mount Union High
School, he retired in 1983 as an accountant for United States Steel
Corp. in Pittsburgh. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles
Aerie No. 1801 of Somerset and BPO Elks No. 577. Wilkinsburg. Funeral
services will be held at noon Saturday, Sept. 22, at St. Francis In the
Fields Episcopal Church, with the Rev. J. Mark Zimmerman officiating.
Interment will he made in the Newton Hamilton Cemetery. 

John A. FOSTER Sr., 80, of West Township, RD. 1, Box 1012, Petersburg,
passed away Wednesday, Sept. 19., 2001, at 4:45 p.m., at Centre
Community Hospital, State College. He had been in failing health for the
past three months. Born Aug.30, 1921. at the family farm, he was a son
of the late Guy C. and Grace F. (Barr) Foster He married Annahelle
Louise Hammond March 7, 1941, in Winchester, VA. Mrs. Foster survives at
their West Township residence, along with a daughter and son: Mrs.
Stanley (Dixie) Wensel and John A. Foster Jr., both of Petersburg. There
are eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and five
great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. One daughter,
Gracie (Foster) Betts, preceded him in death. One sister, Cecile Matter
of Camp Hill, survives. He was preceded in death by a sister, Viola
Davis. Mr. Foster was a member of the Mooresville United Methodist
Church and had also attended the Oasis of Love Church in Huntingdon, He
attended the Bridge School in West Township and had been a dairy farmer
since early childhood.He owned and operated the Globe Run Farm in
Shavers Creek Valley. He was a member of the Shavers Creek Grange No.
353: board member of the Shavers Creek Burial Association: Pennsylvania
Holstein Association: National Holstein Association; and was on the
committee of Agway for many years. Mr. Foster was an avid hunter and was
a lifetime resident of Shavers Creek Valley. Funeral services will be
held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, at the Cutright-Speck Funeral Home,
Juniata Valley Chapel, 412 Main St. Alexandria, with Pastor Myrna Speck
and Pastor David L. Benfer officiating. Interment will be made in the
Mooresville Cemetery, Petersburg, RD. 1. 

Peggy J. BURKE, 56, of 2 W. Pennsylvania Ave., Mount Union, formerly of
Pannebaker Ave., Lewistown, died at 12:01 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001,
at the Lewistown Hospital. Born Dec. 4, 1944, in Barrville, she was the
daughter of the late Melvin Sr. and Mildred (Frankhouser) Sweitzer.
Surviving are: children, Mrs. Backie (Kim) Gibbons, Mount Union, Mrs.
Steven (Robin) Plank and Mrs. Phillip (Charity) Bender, both of
Lewistown, Teresa Turner and Mrs. Ted (Dana) Hess, both of Newton
Hamilton and Mrs. Keith (Bobbi-Jo) Lauver, Kisler; sister and brother,
Mrs. Guy (Maryann) Heisey, Lewistown and Melvin Sweitzer Jr., Granville;
stepsister, Whitney Baker, Mount Union; and 20 grandchildren. She was
preceded in death by a son, Ronald E. Young Jr. in 1962; three sisters,
Vonnie Sweitzer, Rosie Sweitzer and Brenda Sweitzer; and a
granddaughter, Jaylena Young. She was an inspector at Scotty's Fashions,
Lewistown. She was a member of the Salvation Army, Lewistown and was a
former Sunday school teacher. Her service will be held at 10:30 a.m.
Monday at Hoenstine Funeral Home Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown, with
Captain Eddie Purvis and Major Raymond Simpson officiating. Interment
will be in Lind Memorial Cemetery. 

Ruth N. MOTYL, 53, of P.O. Box 138, Mill Creek, died Wednesday, Sept.
19, 2001, at 9:07 a.m., at her residence. Born Oct. 16, 1947, in Mount
Union. she was a daughter of the late Ray and Betsy (Thompson) Moore.
She married Frank T. Motyl Jan. 19, 1972, at St. John’s Lutheran Church,
Lewistown. Mr. Motyl survives at home, along with a son, Jan-Ray Thomas
Motyl of York. Also surviving are 27 nieces and nephews. Three brothers
and five sisters also survive: William R. Moore, Smithfield, Huntingdon;
Beatrice J. Price; Mrs. Harry (Mabel M.) Zimmerman, Downingtown; Glenn
A. Moore, Knoxville, Tenn.; Ralph B. Moore, Mill Creek; Mrs. Rolf (Rita)
Thelander, Marysville, Wash.; Mrs. Elwood (Waneta) Strauser, McVeytown;
and Rhea F. Moore, Pittsburgh. She was preceded in death by one brother
and one sister: Lee V. Moore and Mrs. Elwood (Rosie L.) Staley. Mrs.
Motyl was a member of the Emmanuel Bible Church, Smithfield Twp.,
Huntingdon. A 1965 graduate of Captain Jack High School. Mount Union,
she was employed by Kentucky Fried Chicken in Warren, Ohio, Corkin’s
Diner in Lewistown and Red’s Diner in Lewistown. She enjoyed cooking and
helping people. A private memorial service will be held at the
convenience of the family, with the Rev. Gregory Harven officiating. 

Warren ‘Corky’ Simpson MYERS, 73, of 1321 Woodridge Dr., Middletown,
formerly of 224 Green Lane Dr., Camp Hill, died Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2001,
at 8:10 p.m., at Bethany Village, Mechanicsburg. Born Feb. 4, 1928, in
Huntingdon, he was a son of the late Warren K. and Mildred (Simpson)
Myers. He married Margaret ‘Pegge’ Miller. who preceded him in death
Aug. 22, 1972. He later married Emma Jane Deppen May 5, 1974, who
survives at Bethany Village, Mechanicsburg. Surviving, along with his
wife. are a daughter, four sons and two step-sons: Barbara Tracy,
Haymarket, Va.; Timothy M. Myers, Dauphin; Warren Karl Myers, Tulsa,
Okla.; Scott Simpson Myers, Frederick. Md.; Robert Thomas Myers. Troy,
Ohio; James Fetzer, Knoxville, Tenn.; and Richard Fetzer, Woxall. There
are 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. One son preceded in
death in infancy. One brother, Richard E. Myers, preceded him in death.
Mr. Myers was a member of the Ebenezer United Methodist Church, where he
was a member of the choir and was involved in fund-raising activities,
Meals on Wheels, and assisted in the nursery school. He was a former
member of the Christ Presbyterian Church in Camp Hill. where he served
as deacon. A 1946 graduate of Camp Hill High School, he graduated from
Penn State University in 1950 with a bachelor’s degree in business
administration. He retired from Lake Asphalt in Harrisburg as a sales
engineer in 1992. Previously he worked at the Bureau of Materials
Testing and Research for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation
in Harrisburg. Mr Myers was a member of the Harrisburg Consistory AASR.
He was also a former Cub Scout leader for Pack No. 272 in Camp Hill and
was a former member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity while attending PSU.
He was a long-term donor to the American Red Cross and was an avid music
lover, pianist and enjoyed bowling and water skiing. A memorial service
will be held at 7:30 p.m. today, at the Ebenezer United Methodist
Church, Middletown. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday,
Sept. 24, at the John B. Brown Funeral Home, Huntingdon, with the Rev.
SueAnn Whorl officiating. Interment will be made in the Riverview
Cemetery. Huntingdon. 

Elaine R. EICHENSEHR, 74, of 911 Washington St., Huntingdon, died
Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2001, at 6:05 p.m., at 30 Woodcock Ln., McVeytown,
following a brief illness. Born March 10, 1927, in St. Petersburg, Fla.,
she was a daughter of the late George David and Ruth (Harrell) Reuer.
She married Walter H. Eichensehr July 13, 1945, in St. Petersburg, Fla.
He preceded her in death March 4, 1995. Surviving are three sons and one
daughter: Walter David Eichensehr, McVeytown; Mrs. William (Bette)
McDowell, Pinellas Park, Fla.; Phillip R. Eichensehr, Edgewood, Md.; and
Michael S. Eichensehr, Shade Gap. There are nine grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren. One sister, Louise Griffin of Bell, Fla., survives.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Adeline Millikin. Mrs. Eichensehr
was a member of the Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Huntingdon, where
she was a member of the Altar Society. A 1945 graduate of St. Petersburg
High School, she was primarily a homemaker. She volunteered at
Huntingdon Manor and was a member of numerous card clubs. She was an
avid card player and enjoyed dancing, travel and shopping. A funeral
Mass will be held at the Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Huntingdon
Saturday, Sept. 22, at 10 a.m., with the Rev.. Elwood Figurelle
officiating. Interment will be made in the Holy Cross Cemetery,
Huntingdon. 

Olive W. McBRIDE, 97, of Lower Allen Township. formerly of Huntingdon,
died at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2001, at the Harrisburg Hospital. Born
Oct. 1, 1903, in Newport News, Va., she was the daughter of the late
Robert F. and Bertha (Redman) Wallace. Her husband, Austin A. McBride,
preceded her in death. Surviving are a daughter, Roberta Kay Peightel of
Carson City, Nev.. two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Mrs.
McBride was a member of the Mechanicsburg Presbyterian Church,
Mechanicsburg, where she was an elder and superintendent of the Sunday
School. She received a bachelor of science degree from the University of
Maryland in home economics education and did some graduate work at
Columbia University in New York. She was a life member of the Alpha
Omicron Phi and received a Phi Kappa Phi award for her academic work.
She taught in Maryland schools and was active in the Salvation Army.
Funeral services will be held at 10 am. Tuesday, Sept. 25, at the
Mechanicsburg Presbyterian Church,. with the Rev. Dr. Richard D. Sweeney
and the Rev. Myrtle E. McCall officiating. Interment will be made in the
Oxford Cemetery, Oxford. 

Angeline Villa PUTT, 90, of Elkton, Md., died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2001.
Born April 12, 1911. in Riddlesburg, she was a daughter of the late
Liberato and Lena M. Villa. Her husband, Ernest Putt, preceded her in
death. Surviving are her sons, Alfred James Putt of Saxton and Richard
Lee Putt of Bedford, five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are three siblings: Elizabeth "Lizzie" Reed, Quarryville;
Frances Anderson, Newburgh, N.Y.; and Joseph Villa, Loraine, Ohio. Mrs.
Putt was a retired waitress. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m.
Saturday, Sept. 22, at the Raven Run Church of the Brethren, Saxton.
Interment will be made in the Dudley Protestant Cemetery, Dudley. 

Dr Mike S. WAGNER, 56, of HCR 1, Huntingdon, died at 6:08 p.m. Thursday,
Sept. 20, 2001, at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon. He was horn
July 13, 1945, the son of the late Earl and Jean (Snyder) Wagner He
married Michelle Barker Guevara, who survives at their home, along with
daughter Courtney Wagner. He is also survived by sons Jon Gummo Wagner
of Ithaca. N.Y., and Damon Wagner of State College, and by his
step-mother, Elsie Wagner, Huntingdon. Also surviving are brothers Merle
Wagner of Florida and George Wagner of Montana. A sister, Ruth Carolyn
Ross. preceded him in death. Mr. Wagner was employed by the Department
of Defense Dependent Schools, where he served as an education
administrator for the past 30 years. A memorial service will be held at
2 p.m. Sunday. at the Wagner home on Foster Road, off of Route 829 near
Calvin. 

Dorothy Marie STEELE, 79, formerly of Tyrone, RD. 4, died Sunday, Sept.
23, 2001, at 1:14 am., at Epworth Manor, Tyrone. Born Jan. 1, 1922. in
Saulsburg, Huntingdon County, she was a daughter of the late James L.
and Ella (Haulman) Bookhamer. She married Boyd W. Steele Oct. 24, 1943,
in Tyrone. He preceded her in death Nov. 30, 1991. Surviving are a
daughter and three sons: Deborah E. Jackson. Petersburg; Ret. Col. Edgar
W. Steele, Huntingtown. Md.; Richard P Steele, Tyrone; and Timothy B.
Steele, Spruce Creek. There are nine grandchildren and 17
great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a sister, Margaret Taylor of
Clearfield, and a brother, James L. Bookhamer of Huntingdon. RD. 2. She
was preceded in death by a son, Thomas L. Steele, and a sister. Mrs.
Steele was a member of the Sinking Valley Presbyterian Church, where she
was a deacon and a member of the Harnish Mission Circle. She was also a
member of the Tyrone Cootiettes No. 585, Howard Gardner American Legion
Ladies Auxiliary, Epworth Manor Auxiliary: and the Tyrone Hospital
Auxiliary. She was a Red Cross bloodmobile volunteer for 25 years and
served as a volunteer at the James E. VanZandt VA Medical Center in
Altoona, with 500 hours of service. Funeral services will be held
Wednesday, Sept. 26, at 11 am., at the Feller Memorial Home. Tyrone,
with the Rev. Bruce Boyles officiating. Interment will be made in the
Eastlawn Cemetery. 

Charles Daniel RUPERT, 52, of rural Alexandria, formerly of Ohio and
Huntingdon County, died Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001, at J.C. Blair Memorial
Hospital in Huntingdon. Born July 23, 1949, in Huntingdon, he was a son
of Charles Elmer and Joyce McGinnis Rupert, who survive in Canada. On
Sept. 9, 1966, at the First Church of the Nazarene in McConnellstown, he
married Judy Ann Hetrick, who survives at home. He was a 1967 graduate
of Juniata Valley High School. Since 1987 he was a roofer for R. W.
Johnson's Construction of Spring Mills. He was a Protestant. He enjoyed
hunting and spending time with his grandchildren. In addition to his
wife, he is survived by two daughters, Wanda Denise Ruiz of Petersburg
and Barbara Joanne Rupert of Alexandria; a sister, Virginia Louise
Baxter of Canton, Ohio; three brothers, Jeffrey Wayne of Massillon,
Ohio, David Wesley of Canton, Ohio, and Donald Scott Rupert of Phoenix,
Ariz., and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by an infant
daughter, Kimberly Anne, who died in 1971. A memorial service will be
held at 3 p.m., Monday September 24 at Cutright-Speck Funeral Home, 207
Ridge Road, Smithfield with the Revs. Thomas and Verna Cahill
officiating. Burial will be private. 

William Edward YINGLING, 66, of RD. 1, Box 292, Porter Township,
Alexandria, died Friday. Sept. 21, 2001 a 3:45 p.m., at the Altoona
Hospital. Born March 29, 1935, in Altoona, he was a son of the late
Edward Ralph and Alice Rachel (Wogan) Yingling. He married Nora
Elizabeth Graffius Aug. 19, 1967, at Calvary Independent Baptist Church,
Huntingdon with Brother Dick Myers officiating. Mrs. Yingling survives
at home, along with a son William Daniel Yingling of Danville Also
surviving are two brothers and a sister: David F. Yingling of Hesston,
John E. Yingling of Center Union and Jane I. Snare of Huntingdon. Mr.
Yingling was a member of Calvary Independent Baptist Church, Huntingdon.
He attended the Huntingdon area schools and had served as an aircraft
mechanic engineer, with the U.S. Air Force, stationed at McCoy Air Force
Base in Orlando Fla from May 16, 1955, to Jan 28, 1959 For many years he
worked as a mechanic at the former Specks Pontiac-Oldsmobile dealership
in Huntingdon. After the dealership was sold, he worked at Rog Garner
Chevrolet and Car Care for a number of years, retiring in 1997. A
lifetime resident of Huntingdon County, he had resided at his Porter
Township home for the past 34 years. He enjoyed hiking and reading and
had a special love for young children. Funeral services will he held at
2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, at the Calvary Independent Baptist Church, 300
Standing Stone Ave., Huntingdon, with the Rev. Dr. Thomas C. Coleman
officiating. Interment will he made in the Alexandria Presbyterian
Cemetery. 

Charles Daniel RUPERT, 52, of RD. I Box 369B, Alexandria, died Thursdav,
Sept. 20, 2001 at 5:15 p.m. at J.C. Blair Mernorial Hospital. His death
was sudden and unexpected. He was born July 23, 1949, in Huntingdon, the
son of Charles Elmer and Joyce (McGinnis) Rupert. He married Judy Ann
Hetrick Sept. 9. 1966, at the First Church of the Nazarene,
McConnellstown. He is survived by his wife at their home, and by his
parents in Canada. He is also survived by two daughters; Mrs. Ezequiel
(Wanda Denise) Ruiz of Petersburg and Barbara Joanne Rupert of
Alexandria. Three brothers, Jeffery Wayne Rupert of Massillion, Ohio;
David Wesley Rupert of Canton, Ohio, and Donald Scott Rupert of Phoenix,
Ariz and a sister, Mrs. Paul (Virginia Louise) Baxter of Canton, Ohio
survive. He is also survived by six grandchildren and was "neighborhood
grandfather" to a number of young people. Mr. Rupert was of the
Protestant faith. He graduated from Juniata Valley High School in 1967
and had been employed by R.W. Johnson’s Construction of Spring Mills as
a roofer. Except for a number of years spent in Ohio., he was a lifetime
resident of Huntingdon County and had lived at his current residence for
the past two years. He enjoyed hunting and spending time with his
grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, Sept.
24 at the Cuthright-Speck Funeral Home, 207 Ridge Road, Smithfleld
Township, with the Revs. Thomas Cahill and Verna Cahill officiating.
Interment will be private. 

Henry L. "Hen" Himes Sr., 73, of RD. 1, Box 330, Mapleton, died at 9
p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, 2001, at his home. He had been in failing health.
Born Jan. 1. 1928, in Mount Union, he was a son of the late Lewis Jay
and Mae (Johnson) Himes. He was united in marriage to Lydia A. Cox June
15,. 1949, in Mount Union. Mrs. Himes survives at home, along with four
children: Mrs. Dale (Lydia M.) Hepner, Yadkinville, N.C.; Mrs. Clyde
(Kathy j.) Weidner, Carlisle; Mrs. Dwight (Cynthia S.) Aurand,
McVeytown. R.D. 1; and Henry L. Himes, Lewistown. There are 11
grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are the
following brothers and sisters: Elizabeth Booher, Mount Union; Mrs.
George (Minerva) Ziegler, Woodland Retirement Center, formerly of Mount
Union; Annabelle Brant, Mount Union; Melvin "Mike" Himes, Fort
Littleton, formerly of Mount Union; Josephine Ripple, Lewistown; Mrs.
Robert (Betty Jane) Counsman, Florida; Helen Baker. Huntingdon; and
Robert Himes, Mount Union. He was preceded in death by two sisters and
abrother: Madeline Rhodes, Mabel Hampton and Arthur Himes. Mr. Himes was
of the Protestant faith. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during
World War II and was decorated for outstanding marksmanship. He retired
from Harbison-Walker Refractories in Mount Union, after a number of
years of service. Mr. Himes was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed
gardening. Funeral services will be held at 11 am. Tuesday. Sept. 25, at
the Robert D. Heath Funeral Home. Mount Union, with the Rev. Jeff
Winstead and the Rev. David Maynard officiating. Interment will be made
in the Mount Union Cemetery. 

Betty J. (Maines) BALDEMOR, 52, of Centerville, Ohio. died Tuesday,
Sept. 18, 2001, at her residence. Born May 30, 1949. in Huntingdon, she
was a daughter of Lee B. and Jean (Baker) Maines, who survive in
Huntingdon. She married Greg Baldemor, who survives at home. Also
surviving are two sons and a daughter: Michael Baldemor. Durham, NC.;
David Baldemor, Tempe, Ariz.; and Amanda of Chicago. Ill. Two brothers
survive: Robert Maines of Huntingdon and Jim Maines of Lowell, Mass. A
1967 graduate of Huntingdon Area High School, she was primarily a
homemaker. A funeral service was held in Centerville Friday, Sept. 21.
Interment was made in the Heritage Hills Memory Gardens. 

Margaret WARD, 91, a resident of the Woodland Retirement Center,
Orbisonia, formerly of Mount Union, died at 4:35 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21,
2001, at the retirement center. For many years, Margaret had resided
with her niece, Betty Schutawie in Mount Union. Born May 23, 1910, in
Taylor Township, Fuiton County. she was a daughter of the late John and
Myrtle (Bergstresser) Gracey. She was united in marriage to Elbert J.
Ward Sept. 20, 1946, in Ardmore. He preceded her in death Nov. 23, 1967.
She is survived by a number of nieces and nephews. The last surviving
member of her immediate family, she was preceded in death by the
following brothers and sister: Homer Gracey, Earl Gracey, David Gracey,
Elwood Gracey and Mae Duvall. Mrs. Ward was employed in retail in the
Philadelphia area prior to her retirement and relocation to Huntingdon
County. She was of the Protestant faith and enjoyed spending time with
family and friends. Funeral services will be held at the convenience of
the family. 

John Victor EDWARDS, 84, of Ellenton. Fla., a longtime resident of
Huntingdon, died Sept. 17, 2001, In Blake Medical Center. Born in
Huntingdon, Mr. Edwards moved to Manatee County, Fla.. from Warren,
Ohio. in 1976. He is survived by his wife, Betty, a son, Thomas Hutton
of Cupertino, Calif., three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Also
surviving are two sisters: Kathryn Wagner of Ellenton. Fla., and Alice
Joy Hohmann of Palm Springs, Calif. A 1935 graduate of Huntingdon High
School, Mr. Edwards was a lineman for a utility company. Funeral
services were held in Palmetto, Fla. 

Veronica Jean HOOVER, 50, of Robertsdale, died Monday, Sept. 24, 2001,
at her home. Born Nov. 10, 1950, in Huntingdon, she was the daughter of
the late Paul Didyk and Ethel (Ramper) Didyk, who survives in
Robertsdale. She married Daniel S. Hoover Jr. Aug. 5, 1972, at the
Robertsdale Church of God. He preceded her in death July 9, 1979. In
addition to her mother, she is survived by a daughter. Krista Hoover of
Martinsburg. and one granddaughter. Also surviving are two brothers,
Paul Didyk of Robertsdale and Ronald Didyk of Cassville, along with
several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Hoover was a member of the Robertsdale
United Methodist Church. A 1968 graduate of Tussey Mountain High School,
she had been employed as a material handler at Seton Company in Saxton.
She enjoyed fishing with her mother, spending time with her
granddaughter, taking walks and reading. Funeral services will be held
at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27. at the Curtis A. Heath Funeral Home, Broad
Top. with Pastor Donald Simmons officiating. Interment will be made in
the IOOF Cemetery, Broad Top. 

James D. MILLER, 85, of Box 65, Williamsburg. R.R. 1, died Tuesday,
Sept. 25, 2001, at his residence, after an extended illness. Born July
11, 1916, in Saxton, he was a son of the late James 0. And Julia Ann
(Dick) Miller. He married Elizabeth L. Haney Oct. 18, 1935, in
Cumberland, Md. Surviving, along with his wife, are two sons, James R.
and Mathias F. Miller, both of Williamsburg, seven grandchildren, 12
great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Two grandchildren,
Justin and Melanie, are deceased. The last surviving member of his
immediate family, he was preceded in death by 21 siblings. Mr. Miller
formerly attended the Williamsburg Church of God. He retired as a
driller and shooter at Grannas Brothers Construction in Hollidaysburg in
1981, after 21 years of service. Prior to that, he was employed by the
Pennsylvania Railroad for ten years and was a self-employed farmer and
woodsman in Entriken. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday,
Sept. 28, at the Bolger Funeral Home. Inc., Williamsburg, with Pastor
Rodger L. Traxler and Pastor Charles 0. Sprowls officiating. Interment
will be made in the Sparr Cemetery, Williamsburg. R.R. 1. 

Robert Eugene ESTEP Sr., 79. of 7054 L.W.W., St. Thomas, died Sept. 26,
2001, at his home. He was born Oct. 29, 1921, in Broad Top City, the son
of the late James C. and Mary (Edwards) Estep. He married Urcille A.
Hess Oct. 12. 1946. She survives in St. Thomas. He is also survived by a
daughter. Mrs. Dennis (Susan) Barnes of Chambersburg, and by four sons:
Robert E. Estep Jr. of Chambersburg: Richard W. "Rick" Estep of
Martinsburg, W.Va.; James B. Estep of Chambersburg and Todd Estep of
Mercersburg. He is also survived by two sisters. Mrs. Paul (Lola) Boyd
of New Market, Va. and Fern Stinson of James Creek, as well as by 10
grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by
one grandson, three sisters and five brothers. Mr. Estep was a member of
the St. Thomas United Methodist Church. He served in the United States
Army during WW II, earning the European/African/Middle Eastern Ribbon
with one Silver Star. Prior to his retirement, he worked as a budget
analyst for Headquarters DESCOM at Letterkenny Army Depot. After his
retirement, he worked as a starter and ranger at Majestic Ridge Golf
Course. He was a life member of the Detrich-Brechbill American Legion
Post 612, St. Thomas and of the Mercersburg VFW. He was also a member of
the National AARP and the National Association of Retired Federal
Employees. He was an avid sports enthusiast, was active in the Broad Top
City Oldtimers Baseball Association and was a member of the Broad Top
City Oldtimers Baseball Association Hall of Fame. A funeral service will
be held a 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, at St. Thomas United Methodist
Church, with the Rev. Paul Crawford officiating. Interment will be made
at St. Thomas Cemetery, St. Thomas. The Detrich-Brechbill Honor Guard
will conduct graveside services. 

Frederick Lynn HAZZARD, born Sept. 25, 2001. in Saxton, died the same
day at 5:22 am., at Bedford Memorial Hospital. His twin brother, Michael
Harrison Hazzard, died Wednesday. Sept. 26, 2001, at 9:25 am., at Lee
Regional Hospital in Johnstown. They were the twin sons of Tina Hazzard
of Saxton. Surviving are their maternal grandparents. Jerry and Melva
Hazzard of Saxton, and an uncle, Frederick Lynn Hazzard. One brother,
Ridge Michael Hazzard, survives at home. A graveside service was held
September 27, at the Grandview Cemetery, with Pastor Todd Templeton
officiating. 

Andrew LUKONDI Jr., 58, of Monte Vista, Colo., died Sept. 25, 2001, at
the San Luis Valley Regional Medical Center in Alamosa, Colo. Born May
6, 1943, in McKeesport, he was a son of the late Andrew and Amelia
(Hoinkes) Lukondi. He married Marie Del Carmen Sanchez Jan. 30, 1965, in
Santa Ana. Calif. Surviving, along with his wife of 36 years, are his
children: Ray Lukondi of Blanca, Colo.; Joseph Lukondi. Honolulu,
Hawaii; Andrew Lukondi, Portland. Ore.; and Marie Holeso, Mosca. There
are 12 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Also surviving is
a sister, Peggy England of Huntingdon. Mr. Lukondi loved to collect
things and spend time with his family. Funeral services will be held at
10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, at the Rogers Family Mortuary in Alamosa,
Colo. Interment will be made in the Blanca Cemetery. 

Frances R. BUSECK, 65, of 712 Station St., Saxton, died Wednesday. Sept.
26, 2001, at 5:15 a.m., at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon,
following an extended illness. Born Sept. 11, 1936, in Philadelphia, she
was a daughter of the late Matthew J. and Dorothy R. (McNulty) Campbell.
She married Arthur H. Buseck Oct. 19, 1957, at St. Joseph’s Church in
Ambler. He preceded her in death March 31, 1999. Surviving are the
following children: Thomas H. Buseck of Lansdale; Patricia Gower of St.
Clair. Fla.; Dennis M. Buseck and Michael P. Buseck, both of Ambler; and
Teresa Williams. Hopewell. There are six grandchildren. Also surviving
are a brother and a sister: James J. Campbell of Ambler and Anne Zenobio
of Clearwater, Fla. Mrs. Buseck was a member of the Immaculate
Conception Parish in Dudley. She was primarily a homemaker. A funeral
Mass will be held Saturday, Sept. 29, at 10 a.m., at the Immaculate
Conception Church, with the Rev. Patrick Leahey officiating. Interment
will be made in the IOOF Cemetery, Broad Top. 

Madaline A. COWAN, 82, of HCR 62, Neelyton, died at 5:22 am. Wednesday,
Sept. 26, 2001, at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown, Md. Born
April 12, 1919, in Dublin Township, Huntingdon County, she was a
daughter of the late Paul H. and Olive V. (Carlin) Wilson. She married
Harry W. "Barney" Cowan March 17, 1942. Mr. Cowan preceded her in death
May 18, 2001. Surviving are three children: Randall D. Cowan of HCR 62,
Neelyton; Kay Larue Book, Chambersburg; and Ian Paul Cowan, HCR 62,
Neelyton. There are seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
One infant son is deceased. Two sisters survive: Cordelia Burdge of
Hershey and Mamie Anderson, Shade Gap. Four brothers and two sisters
preceded her in death. Mrs. Cowan was a member of the Fair Ridge
Assembly of God Church, Shade Gap. R.D. She was a life member of the
Shade Gap Area Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary and a former member of the
Tuscarora Grange. She was primarily a homemaker. Funeral services will
be held at 11 am. Saturday, Sept. 29, at the Fair Ridge Assembly of God
Church, Shade Gap. R.D., with the Rev. Wilson Boyd and the Rev. Belvy
White officiating. Interment will be made in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery,
Shade Gap, R.D. 

Donald R. PETERSON, 80, of Shade Gap, formerly of Port Matilda, died
Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2001, at the University Park Nursing Home in State
College. Born Sept. 5, 1917, in Bellwood, he was a son of the late Orval
A. and Edna Bell Reigh Peterson. On May 5, 1940, he married Mary C.
Adams, who died Oct. 22, 1996. He then married Barbara Zimmerman Snyder
on July 14, 1974, in rural Tyrone. For 17 years he was a welder for the
Pennsylvania Railroad. He became a custodian for the Juniata Valley
School District, retiring in 1980 after eight years of service. He was a
Protestant. He was an avid gardener and a farmer. In addition to his
second wife, who survives in Shade Gap, he is survived by two daughters,
Helen Harpster of rural Tyrone and Lois Savage of Pineville, La.; three
sons, Harold B. of Philipsburg, Herman E. of Port Matilda, and John W.
of Millheim; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a stepdaughter,
Vickie Pollock of Petersburg; three stepsons, Richard E. Snyder Jr. of
Holland, N.Y., Barry Neal Snyder and Steven Robert Snyder, both of
Tyrone; 12 stepgrandchildren, and six step-great-grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by a sister. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday
at the Feller Memorial Funeral Home, Tyrone, with the Rev. Patricia
Gable officiating. Burial will be in Franklinville Cemetery. 

Roberta Jean BIGLEY, 65, of 1209 N. Haskell Ave., Apt. B, Dallas, Texas,
died Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001, at her home. Born March 14, 1936, in
Huntingdon, she was the daughter of Howard W. and Charlotte Hope (Bone)
Bigley. Her mother survives in Huntingdon. Also surviving are four sons:
Arthur Lee Kegler II and David Lawrence Kegler, both of New Alexandria;
Stuart Keith Kegler and Bobby Gray Wagner Jr., both of Dallas, Texas.
There are four grandchildren. One brother, Stephen H. Bigley of Ft.
Lauderdale, Fla., survives. A 1954 graduate of Huntingdon High School,
she was primarily a homemaker. Funeral services will be held Friday,
Sept. 28, at 2 p.m., at the Robert E. Peters Funeral Home, Huntingdon,
with the Rev. David L. Dearing officiating. Interment will be made in
the Russellville Reformed Cemetery, James Creek, R.D. 1. 

Sue A (Weaver) HOOVER, 64, of Hummelstown, died Wednesday, Sept 26,
2001. in the Hershey Medical Center. Born May 15, 1937, in Hunting-don,
she was a daughter of the late Palmer Sr. and Pearl (Grainey) Weaver.
She married Kenneth R. Hoover Sr., Feb. 9, 1961. Mr. Hoover survives at
home, along with one daughter and two sons.: Cathy S. Harlow.
Huntingdon; Kenneth R. Hoover Jr.. Hummelstown, and Michael A. Hoover,
Elizahethtown. There are eight grandchildren. Also surviving are two
sisters and four brothers: Betty Reeder, Pittsburgh; Cordelia Wright.
Huntingdon, John Grainey and Palmer Weaver Jr., both of Huntingdon;
Robert Weaver of Kilmarnock. Va.; and Thomas Weaver, Salunga. Mrs.
Hoover was primarily a homemaker. She enjoyed knitting and boating.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Oct. 2, at 12:30 p.m., in the
Trefz and Bowser Funeral Home, Inc., 114 W. Main S., Hummelstown, with
the Rev. Dr. Emlyn H. Jones officiating. Interment will be made in the
Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, East Hanover Township. 

Charley "Horse" McCABE, 82, a resident of Moran’s Home in Bellwood,
formerly of Huntingdon, died Wednesday, Sept. 26. 2001, at 11:45 p.m.,
at Bon Secours Holy Family Hospital, Altoona. Born March 21, 1919. in
Eminence. Mo., he was a son of the late James and Dessie Irene (Johnson)
McCabe. He married Mary Donaldson, who preceded him in death. Surviving
are the following siblings: Calvin McCabe, Texas; Gerald McCabe, St.
James, Mo.; James McCabe, Salem. Mo.; Ima Jean Wisdom, St. Louis. Mo.;
Lucille Rainbolt, St. Louis Mo.; and Roy L. McCabe, Alexandria, R.D. 1.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Eugene and Orville. and a
sister, Lula Parker. Mr. McCabe was of the Baptist faith. He was
employed as a logger primarily in Illinois until his retirement and move
to Huntingdon in 1970. Private funeral services will be held at the
convenience of the family. Interment will be made in the Huntingdon
Memorial Gardens, Huntingdon, R.D. 1. 

Virginia L. RICHARDSON, 80, of 105 W. Garber St., Mount Union, died at
10:55 a.m. Friday, Sept. 27, 2001, at the Woodland Retirement Center,
Orbisonia. She had been in failing health. Born May 22, 1921, in Mount
Union, she was a daughter of the late Boyd S. and Mary M. (Cornelius)
Rosensteel. She married Kenneth E. Richardson June 27, 1940. He preceded
her in death Nov. 6, 1997. Surviving are two daughters: Mrs. Richard
"Rick" (Marlene) Reeder of Wilmington. N.C., and Mrs. Brad (Deborah)
Rogers of HC 71, Orbisonia. There are three grandsons. She was preceded
in death by a daughter, Donna Schieb. Three brothers survive: Bernard
Rosenstecl and Robert Rosensteel, both of Mount Union, and Raymond
Rosensteel of Berkeley Springs, W.Va. The following brothers and sisters
preceded her in death: Fred Rosensteel, Arthur Cornelius, Dorothy King,
Stanley Rosensteel and Betty Rosensteel, who died in infancy. Mrs.
Richardson was a member of the Wesleyan Church, Mount Union, where she
also attended Sunday School for many year. She was employed by L. Greif
Brothers Manufacturing in Mount Union. Funeral services will be held at
11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 1. at the Robert D. Heath Funeral Home, Mount
Union, with the Rev. Rod Uhlig officiating. Interment will be made in
the Mount Union Cemetery. 

Frances G. FORGY, 82, of Fairview Road, McVeytown, died at 1:24 p.m.
Friday, Sept. 28, 2001, in the emergency room of Lewistown Hospital.
Born Jan. 31, 1919, in Wayne Township, she was a daughter of the late
Merle S. and W. Faye (Gearhart) Kane. She married Roy L. Forgy Sept. 19,
1942. He preceded her in death in August 1984. Surviving are a daughter,
Sheryl A. Stoner of Irvin Ridge Road, McVeytown; three grandchildren,
two great-grandchildren and many foster children reared by Mrs. Forgy.
Also surviving are two brothers and a sister: Fern R. Kane, Palmyra; G.
Elwood Kane, Meade, Kan.; and Mrs. Robert (Ethel) Rosensteel, Mount
Union. She was preceded in death by a brother, Thurman S. Kane. Mrs.
Forgy was previously employed by L. Greif Brothers Manufacturing in
Mount Union and as a cook at Kountry Kitchen Restaurant in McVeytown.
She also helped her husband on their dairy farm. She was a member of the
Atkinsons Mills United Methodist Church, where she taught children’s
Sunday School classes for many years, served as church historian and
participated in the ladies’ class of the church. She was also a member
of the Country Crossroads Senior Citizens Center, Atkinsons Mills. and
enjoyed quilting. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct.
2, at the Atkinsons Mills United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Robert
A. Brown Sr. officiating. Interment will be made in the church’s
cemetery.

Jean L. BAILEY, 85, of State College, died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, at
University Park Nursing Center in State College. Born Oct. 11, 1915, in
Houseville, she was a daughter of the late William I. and Alice Jane
(Dale) Eminhizer. She married William H. Bailey Nov. 6, 1935, in
Cumberland, Md. He preceded her in death June 28, 1994. Surviving are
two daughters and two sons: Catherine "Kitty" Keith, State College;
Donna Meyer, Centre Hall area; Glenn E. "Ed" Bailey, Huntingdon, RD. 2;
and Larry W. Bailey, Shalimar, Fla. There are 12 grandchildren and 14
great-grandchildren. One great-granddaughter, Samantha Lynn Bellwood,
preceded her in death. Also surviving is a sister, Catherine Lee of
Claire Bridge, State College. She was preceded in death by two sisters
and six brothers: Helen Irvin, Hilda Corman, Paul, Jared, Elliott, John,
George and Fred Eminhizer. Mrs. Bailey was a member of the Woodycrest
United Methodist Church, State College, where she was a member of the
Women’s Society of Christian Service. She also coordinated a women’s
prayer group in her home and later at the church because of increased
attendance. She attended the State College High School and was primarily
a homemaker. She enjoyed crocheting, music, playing the piano and
accordion. Earlier in her life, she was a part of an accordion band.
Mrs. Bailey especially enjoyed working with flowers. Funeral services
will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, at the Woodycrest United
Methodist Church, State College, with the Rev. R. Bruce Woolever
officiating. Interment will be made in Pine Grove Mills Cemetery, Pine
Grove Mills. 

David J. BUMGARDNER, 33, of Pittsburgh, formerly of Huntingdon, died at
9:55 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, at Altoona Hospital. His death was
unexpected. He was born Nov. 20, 1967, in Huntingdon, the son of Jacob
and Lelia (Merrills) Bumgardner. He is survived by his mother in
Pittsburgh and by his father in Huntingdon. His paternal grandmother,
Mary Bumgardner, survives in Chambersburg. He is also survived by one
sister, Mrs. John (Tammy) Hobdy Sr. of Pittsburgh; three brothers: Jacob
Bumgardner Jr. of Lancaster, Quincy Bumgardner of Gettysburg and Melvin
Barnes of Pittsburgh; and by three step-sisters: Jessica, Jerrica and
Sarah Begley, all of Huntingdon. A number of aunts and uncles also
survive. Mr. Bumgardner attended the Christian and Missionary Alliance
Church, Huntingdon. He was a 1985 graduate of Huntingdon Area High
School and has been employed as a night manager for Qualex Film
Developing in Pittsburgh. Private funeral services and interment will be
held at the convenience of the family. 

Russell C. McELWEE, 76, of R.R. 1, Box 1360, James Creek, died Friday,
Sept. 28, 2001, at 6:10 p.m., at Huntingdon Manor, following an extended
illness. Born Oct. 17, 1924, in Altoona, he was a son of the late George
W. and Josephine (Blake) McElwee. He married Alene M. Bruninger Aug. 9,
1967 in Culpeper, Va. Surviving, along with his wife at home, are three
children: Jane Droelle of Michigan. Russell C. McElwee Jr., Tennessee;
and Christine Winaugh, Harrisburg. Also surviving are four stepchildren,
five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The last surviving
member of his immediate family, he was preceded in death by one sister,
Aunda Winchester. Mr. McElwee was a member of St. Matthews Lutheran
Church, Marklesburg. He was a member of the Woodcock Valley Lions Club,
Mt. Moriah Lodge F&AM, Huntingdon, Altoona Consistory and Jaffa Shrine.
During World War II, he served with the Merchant Marines and during the
Korean Conflict he served in the U.S. Army. Mr. McElwee worked at the
New Cumberland Army Depot in Middletown and was a milk tester for
Pennsylvania DHIA. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Funeral services will
be held Tuesday, Oct. 2, at 11a.m., at the D. Ronald Long Funeral
Chapel, Saxton, with the Rev. Peter Naschke officiating. Interment will
be made in the Alto Rest Cemetery, Altoona. 

Jack Maurice COULTER, 69, a resident of Supportive Concepts for Family
Living in Strodes Mills, Mifflin County, died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001,
at 4:40 am., at the Lewistown Hospital. He had been in failing health
for the past year. Born Sept. 30, 1931, in Huntingdon, he was a son of
Raymond H. and Annabelle (Argenbright) Coulter. His father survives at
his Huntingdon residence and his mother preceded him in death June 7,
1999. Surviving are two sisters and one brother: Sandra L. Brechbiel,
Huntingdon; Bonnie C. Lankard and Raymond A. Coulter, both of Savannah,
Ga. Two nieces, three nephews, three great-nieces and five great-nephews
survive. Mr. Coulter was a member of the Stone Church of the Brethren,
Huntingdon. He was actively involved with the Special Needs Summer
Program in Lewistown, Educated in the public schools of Huntingdon. he
retired from Skills of Lewisburg. Mr. Coulter enjoyed sports and
wildlife. A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the
family with the Revs. Dale and Christy Dowdy officiating. Interment will
be made in Riverview Cemetery, Huntingdon. 

Emma P MOSBEY, 95. Formerly of Robertsdale, died at 1:15 p.m.Sunday,
Sept. 30, 2001, at the Woodland Retirement Center, Cromwell Township.
She was born Dec. 30, 1905, in Robertsdale, the daughter of the late
Ephraim and Minnie (McQuait) Neuder. She married Henry J. Mosbey in
1925. He preceded her in death. She is survived by three sons: Jack S.
Mosbey of Robertsdale; Henry D. Mosbey of Huntingdon and Darryl C.
Mosbey of Virginia, as well as four grandchildren and seven
great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter,
sons Dennis and Dale, two sisters and four brothers. She was the last
surviving member of her immediate family. Mrs. Mosbey was a member of
the Robertsdale Church of God. She was primarily a homemaker who enjoyed
crafts, shopping and traveling. She was a member of the Women of the
Church of God and the Hopewell and Saxton senior citizens centers.
Funeral services will beheld at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Robertsdale
Church of God, with Pastor Donald Simmons officiating. Interment will be
made at the Broad Top IOOF Cemetery, Broad Top. 

Carl M. GOLDEN, 92, of 401 Prospect Ave., Wilmington. Del., formerly of
Hopewell, died at 8:20 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28, 2001, in Hopewell. He was
born Jan. 28, 1909, in Hopewell, the son of the late Martin V and
Margaret (Rammage) Golden. He married Hilda Eichelherger Sept. 17, 1929,
in Dudley. He is survived by his wife at home and by four children:
Lorrie Ferguson of Los Angeles, Calif.; Carl M. Golden Jr. of
Wilmington, Del.; Michael Golden of Bel Air, Md.; and Gregory Golden of
Elkton, Md.. and by 15 grandchildren arid five great-grandchildren. Also
surviving are half-brothers and half-sisters: Grace Stiffler of
Martinsburg; Pauline Eichelberger of Saxton; Julius Golden of Waterfall
Bobby Golden of Hampton, Va. and Helen Sue Groh of Apex, N.C. He was
preceded in death by brothers Chet and Roy Golden; sisters Rena Gruff,
Vera Golden and Pearl Golden; half-sister Louella Golden and by two
grandsons. Mr. Golden was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church
in Dudley. During his lifetime he worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad
and later at the Drabow Shipyard in Wilmington, Del. He retired in 1975
from DuPont in Wilmington after 29 years of service. A funeral Mass will
be held Saturday, Oct. 6, at 10 am. at the Immaculate Conception Church,
Dudley, with the Rev. Patrick Leahey officiating. Interment will be made
at the Ave Maria Cemetery in Dudley. 

John R LEIDIG, 67, of Shade Gap, formerly of Rice Hollow Road,
Greencastle. died at 3:10p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, at home. He had
been in failing health for the past year and critically ill since May.
He was born Feb. 2, 1934, in Roxbury, the son of the late Raymond H. and
Mable L. (Miller) Leidig. He married Betty L. Burkett in 1961, in
Hagerstown, Md. He is survived by his wife and tour sons: John Randy
Leidig of Greencastle: Kenneth E. Leidig of Greencastle; Judy L. Leidig
of Chambersburg and Mark L. Leidig of Greencastle. There are six
grandchildren. He is also survived by four sisters and a brother: Lois
Seville of Port Loudon: Patsy Hornbaker of Mercersburg; Shirley Young of
Greencastle and Janice Baker of St. Thomas; William Leidig of
Greencastle. He is also survived by a numher of nieces and nephews. He
was preceded in death by a brother, Richard L. Leidig. Mr. Leidig was of
the Protestant faith. He lived his early years in Greencastle, where he
attended the Worleytown School. He received his GED from Hagerstown
Junior College, Hagerstown, Md., and went on to serve in the United
States Army in Okinawa from 1956 to 1958. He was first employed by the
Frick Company, Waynesboro, as a welder for nine years. He then worked
for Grove World Wide of Shady Grove as a machinist for 25 years until
his retirement March 1, 1996. He and his wife have lived at their
current residence in Shade Gap since 1996. He was a member of the
Mercersburg Sportsmen Association and loved hunting and fishing. He aJso
loved making crafts. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday,
Oct. 4, at the Miller-Bowersox Funeral Home, 521 South Washington ,St.,
Greencastle, with the Rev. Herman Fisher officiating. Interment will be
made at the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Greencastle. 

Barbara Wallace (Wilson) HARVEY, 80, of Hendersonville, NC., formerly of
Alexandria, died Sept. 13, 2001. in Hendersonville. N.C. Born Dec. 27,
1920, in Alexandria, she was a daughter of the late Wallace and Eliza
(Phillips) Wilson. She married Ives Harvey, who survives in
Hendersonville, N.C. Also surviving are two children: Lisa Lepovetsky of
St. Marys and Ives Wallace Harvey of Hendersonville, NC. There are two
grandchildren. One infant son is deceased. A sister, Marion Sitarchuk
of Philadelphia. survives. She was preceded in death by one sister. A
memorial service will be held in Alexandria at a later date.
