Shaffer, 75 of 626 Sixth St., Huntingdon, died 5:15 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 5, 1978, at the J. C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon. She was born on April 24, 1902, in McConnellstown, the daughter of John and Carrie (Robb) Whittaker. She married Charles L. Shaffer on May 1, 1925, in McConnellstown. He preceded her in death in 1957. Surviving are the following children: Charles L. Shaffer of Syracuse, N.Y.; Gene K. Shaffer of Rochester, N.Y.; Mrs. Francis (Margaret) Brady of Elmira, N.Y.; Fred W. Shaffer of Philadelphia; and Mrs. John K. (Pauline) Grove of Huntingdon. Sixteen grandchildren also survive, as well as four sisters: Mrs. Harry Shaffer, Mrs. Ralph Grove, Mrs. Chester Wakefield, and Mrs. James Hall, all of Walker Township, Huntingdon County. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Huntingdon, and was very active in the church. She served on its Building Committee, was chairperson of the Council of Ministries, a teacher of the Philathea and Comrade class, and a member of the Naomi and Ruth Circle of the church. She was also a member of the Standing Stone Chapter of the D.A.R. Educated in the Huntingdon schools, she attended Juniata College and then, from 1919 to 1921, the Shippensburg Normal School. She taught in Huntingdon County for four years. She also worked at the old Susquehenna Silk Mill in Huntingdon, and later at Owens-Corning Fiberglas. She retired in 1967. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 7, from the Gordon W. Haverstock Memorial Home, McConnellstown. The Rev. Paul II Kleffel, her pastor, will officiate, and interment will be made in the McConnellstown Cemetery. Friends may call at the memorial home from 7 to 9 p.m. today, Friday, Jan. 6. Those wishing to make memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may do so to the First United Methodist Church of Huntingdon.
