SHIELDS We regret to be compelled to chronicle the death of Annie M. Shields, wife of John Shields, of Shirley Township, who departed this life on Thursday morning, October 28, 1897. Her death was unexpected as she was not thought be critically ill. She and her husband and eldest daughter were all striken down with fever. She had on the day of her death been bleeding at the nose for several hours. Her physician was summoned and applied remedies to arrest it. From this she sank into unconsciousness and while in that condition she passed away. It was a great shock to the family and especially to the husband and parents, who were anxious for his ["his" is typed exactly as the obit was printed] recovery. She was striken down in the prime of womanhood at the early age of 33 years, 3 months, and 16 days. She was born near Johnstown in 1864. Her maiden name was Annie M. Fornof. Her parents are still living and make their home with their son-in-law. She was married by Rev. Dr. Fink at the home of her parents near Johnstown, Dec. 24, 1884, and to them were born three daughters and a son, all of whom with the husband survive her. About eight years ago her husband purchased the farm upon which she died and moved upon it. She was a strong, vigorous and fine looking woman, and little did her friends think that she was to be so ruthlessly cut down by death. She was a kind, loving and helpful wife and did much to aid her husband in caring for the home. She was a loving and affectionate mother, looking after the interests of her children. She was a dutiful daughter and greatly esteemed by her friends and neighbors, as was seen by the large concourse of people who attended the funeral services at her late home on Saturday morning. These services were in charge of Rev D. H. Campbell, D.D., who spoke feelingly of the sad circumstances under which the services were held, the husband and daughter being in their beds and unable to follow the precious remains to the grave, and he commended them and all the friends to the rich comfort and consolidation of the Holy Spirit. Mrs. Shields died in communion with the Lutheran church of Johnstown. Besides her own family and parents she leaves one brother to mourn her loss. She was greatly loved and will be sadly missed in the home and community. Her remains were laid to rest in the Odd Fellows' Cemetery of Mt. Union in the hope of a blessed resurrection. Transcribers Notes: This is from a Mt. Union area newspaper. I am not related to this family. I found several newspaper obits in an old family bible. The obit has been transcribed exactly as the newspaper clipping was printed. This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/pafiles/ File size: 3.1 Kb
