Was Well Known Both in Blair and Huntingdon Counties. Special to the Tribune. HUNTINGDON, Pa., December 22. - During the progress this afternoon of a meeting of the board of directors of the Tussey Mountain Mining and Smelting company, in the office of W. S. Taylor, official headquarters of the company, Mr. John T. Shirley, a conspicuous member, dropped dead. He was engaged in the expression of his views concerning matters pertaining to the corporation when he suddenly fell over and expired without uttering a word. Apoplexy is assigned as the cause. Mr. Shirley was aged about 71 years. With his family he has been living in this town perhaps eight or ten years, coming to Huntingdon from Martinsburg, Blair county. In the latter place he had for some years extensively engaged in the general merchandising business, and at one time was considered very well-to-do financially. A quarter of a century ago he was a prosperous merchant and limestone quarryman at Cove station, in this county. Mr. Shirley was one of the originators of the Tussey Mountain Mining and Smelting company, and of late years he had been giving his entire time to the promotion of this enterprise, believing there was great wealth in store for those who were interested in the company. But his death has come before his hopes were realized in this particular. Deceased is survived by his wife and three sons, as follows: Edward, John, jr., and William. John jr., is at present in the Hahnemann medical hospital in Philadelphia undergoing treatment for appendicitis. As Mr. Shirley's death did not occur until 4 o'clock this afternoon, no arrangements have as yet been made for his funeral. Morning Tribune, Saturday, December 23, 1899
