Spidel Is the First Huntingdon Countian Slain in France. Private Howard R. Spidel, of Union Furnace, is the first Huntingdon county soldier to be slain in France, according to the official casualty list announced at Washington yesterday, and Private James W. Hicks, of Cove Forge, near Williamsburg, has been severely wounded in action. Spidel's name appears with fourteen other Americans killed on the French front. His relatives at Union Furnace were informed of the soldier's death, yesterday, by the war department. Private Hicks enlisted more than a year ago at the Altoona recruiting station of the regular army, and was one of the first Blair county men to get into France. His father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Johnson J. Hicks, of Cove Forge, were apprised of their son being wounded, yesterday, but no other details were given. He is not 21 years old and previously worked in a quarry at Carlim, with his father and several brothers. Altoona Tribune, Saturday June 1, 1918, page 1
