Dr. Margretta Madden Styles, 75, of Clearwater, Florida, died Sunday, November 20, 2005, at her home. She was born March 19, 1930 in Mount Union, Pennsylvania, and graduated from Mount Union High School in 1947. Her parents were the late Russell B. and Agnes (Wilson) Madden. She was preceded in death by sisters Ruth Madden Cushman, Hope Madden Harris, and Kathleen Madden Locke and her brother Samuel Madden. She is survived by her brother Joseph F. Madden of Largo, Florida; one sister Jane Madden Rupp of St. Petersburg, Florida; two sons, Patrick S.M. of Redmond, Washington and Michael J.M. of St. Petersburg, Florida; a daughter, Megan K., Style of Danville, California. Her high school alma mater honored her as Mount Union Area Schools Distinguished Alumna in 1990. She graduated from Juniata College with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology and chemistry. Juniata College also named her as a Distinguished Alumna. Mrs. Styles received her master's degree in nursing at Yale University and a doctorate in education from the University of Florida. She also holds a number of honorary doctorates (seven) and awards from universities in the United States, Canada and Greece. She recently was awarded the 2005 Christiane Reimann Prize, the top international award for outstanding achievement in nursing. Mrs. Styles is an elected fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, the Institute of Medicine, and the Royal College of Nursing of the United Kingdom. She is past president of the American Nurses Association, the American Nurses Credentialing Center and ICN. Styles served as professor and dean of the schools of nursing at the University of California at San Francisco, Wayne State University in Detroit, and the University of Texas healthy Sciences Center at San Antonio. She has written five books and had many articles published in professional journals here and in other countries. Mrs. Styles has been keynote speaker at the Dorothy M. Smith Nursing Leadership Conference and the National Nursing Stakeholders Meeting on Advanced Practice Nurses at the American Nurses Association Headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland. She is a past president of the American Nurses Association and the International Council of Nurses in Geneva, Switzerland.
