Sunderland, 65, of 537 Country Club Road, Mount Union, died at 7:48 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at his home. Funeral services were held Jan. 29 at the Robert D. Heath Funeral Home, Mount Union. Pastor Robert A. Brown Sr. officiated. Interment was in the Newton Hamilton Memorial Cemetery. A Masonic memorial service was held Jan. 28 at the funeral home. Born Nov. 26, 1936, in Newton Hamilton, he was a son of Thoborn and Margaret (Black) Sunderland. He married Karan (Cramer) Sunderland on Nov. 20, 1971, at the Newton Hamilton United Methodist Church. She survives at their home. He was previously married to Cecile (North) Sunderland, who preceded him in death on Jan. 25, 1968. Mr. Sunderland is survived by the following children: Timothy M. Sunderland of RD1 Mount Union, Gina B. Sunderland of Newton Hamilton and Kimberly D. Boyer of Catlettsburg, Ky. Six grandchildren also survive. Two brothers and one sister survive: Evelyn North of Overbrook Acres, Mount Union, Ray Sunderland of Kutztown and Faye Fisher of McVeytown. He was preceded in death by a brother, Lee Sunderland. Mr. Sunderland was a lifelong member of the Newton Hamilton United Methodist Church where he was serving on the church board. He graduated from Captain Jack High School, Mount Union, in 1956. He was employed by the Greater Lewistown Corporation Center, Lewistown, and previously worked at this business under the names of FMC Corporation, Avtex and Lewistown Specialty Yarns for a combined total of almost 40 years of service. For many years, he owned and operated a barbershop in Newton Hamilton. He was a member of Mount Union Lodge F&AM 688, the National Rifle Association and was treasurer of the Newton Hamilton Cemetery Association. He was a devoted family man and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He was also an avid hunter and Penn State fan.
