Varner, 80, of HCR 71 Orbisonia, died at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at her home in Cromwell Township, Huntingdon County, following an extended illness. Funeral services were held Jan. 25 at the Martin R. Brown Funeral Home, Orbisonia, with Rev. James Stork officiating. Interment was made at Bowman's Chapel Cemetery, RD Mapleton. Born Feb. 14, 1921, in Akron, Ohio, she was a daughter of the late Raymond E. and Edna (Alexander) Gartland. She was married to Jay C. Varner on June 19, 1937, in Hagerstown, Md. He preceded her in death on Dec. 19, 1989. She is survived by the following children: Mrs. John (Dora) Stevens, Huntsville, Ala.; Kenneth A. Varner, Huntingdon; Judy Varner, Mifflintown; Boyd E. Varner, HCR 71 Orbisonia; Ben Varner, Huntingdon; Dean C. Varner, HCR 71 Orbisonia; and Daniel L. Varner, Huntingdon. Seventeen grand-children and 12 great-grandchildren also survive. One son, Darrell Jay, and one daughter, Jayleen Mae, preceded her in death. Mrs. Varner is also survived by the following brothers and sisters: Adrian Gartland, Three Springs; Terry Gartland, RD Mapleton; Duane Gartland, Newton Hamilton; Ella Kay Smith, McVeytown; and Betty Mae Guthrie, Myrtle, Miss. One sister and two brothers preceded her in death. Mrs. Varner was a member of the Beech Run Church of the Brethren, RD Mapleton, and the Ladies Auxiliary of Madden-Wennick Post 518, American Legion, Rockhill Furnace. During her life, she was a homemaker and had a lifelong interest in farming at their homeplace. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great- grandchildren, along with quilting, cross stitching and reading.
