Struck by a Rock Weighing Nearly Half a Ton - Skull Crushed. John Winters, aged 16 years, driver in the quarries of the Cambria Iron company at Birmingham, was almost instantly killed by being struck by a falling rock yesterday morning. He was in the act of hitching his mules to a cart when a rock weighing nearly half a ton toppled from a ledge about forty feet above him, striking another ledge on the way down and glancing therefrom. Workmen seeing the imminent danger called to the boy, but too late, for just as he looked up, the heavy rock struck him on the head crushing his skull in a horrible manner. Notwithstanding his terrible injury, young Winters lived almost three hours, breathing his last shortly after 1 o'clock. Dr. D. J. Appleby, of Tyrone, and Dr. S. M. Snyder, of Birmingham, rendered all the medical aid possible, but their patient was hurt beyond possible recovery. Coroner T. S. McCartney went to Birmingham in the afternoon to hold an inquest. The deceased was the son of Samuel Winters. He had been the victim of an accident strikingly similar last September, when he was struck by a falling rock and sustained a fracture at the base of the skull.
