Henry was married first to Catherine Hankey, who died shortly after the birth of their 8th child. He married secondly Mary Ann Bair Byers, a young widow with two small children whose husband was killed in fighting during the Civil War. Henry & Mary Ann had six sons: Samuel Camden, b. Oct 30, 1875; Charles McCandless, b. Feb 13, 1877; Hervey Eugene, b. May 21, 1878; Ira Alphonso, b. July 27, 1879; Adelbert Boyd, b. March 19, 1881 and Royal Varde, b. March 25, 1886. All of these sons were born in Indiana County PA. Henry S. Miller was born near Homestead, PA and spent his very early years assisting his father, who operated a what was known as the Six-Mile Ferry near Hazelwood, now a part of the city of Pittsburgh, on the Monongahela River. He moved to Armstrong County about 1849/50 and later to Indiana County, where he purchased a farm. In 1866, he purchased his final home, a farm on what is now known as Township Road 159, between Smith Rd and Miller Rd.
