DEVERS was born near Ligonier, Westmoreland county, in 1833, and was a son of Hugh and Isabella Devers nee McConaughey, daughter of James McConaughey. Hugh Devers was a native of the vicinity of Ligonier. He came to Indiana county in 1834, and in the same or the next year, opened a store on the site of Homer. He is said to have been the first man in the county of buy country produce to ship to Pittsburgh; he died in 1857, about forty-eight years of age. His wife was one of the pioneers of the Homer M.E. Church, and was for many years a member of that connection. She died in 1879, at the age of seventy. Their children were: James M., m. to Elizabeth Ellis; Isabella, m. to G.C. Cribbs, a son of Daniel Cribbs, d. in 1874, at the age of forty-eight; John H.; m. to Elizabeth M. Ogden, daughter of William Ogden, of Westmoreland county; and Margaret, d., m. to Robert Edgey. G.C. Cribbs' children were: George A., d.; James M.; Lizzie A., d.; Anna Mary; William M., and John D. Out subject's only child is Edward, adopted. Mr. Devers was a clerk for, a partner with, and the successor of William McQueston, in the grocery business in Saltsburg. He went to Philadelphia in 1857, and has been engaged in the wholesale notion jobbing trade. He has been connected for nineteen years-three being as a partner-with Young, Smith, Field & Co.
