(Ebensburg, Pa.) 1867-1938: May 20, 1871 May 1871 On Wednesday last, the parents, of Alfred Johnson, living in Rayne township, about one mile from Marion, left home for the purpose of attending the funeral of a neighbor. During their absence, Alfred thought he would go hunting. He got his father's rifle, and while putting his foot upon the lock, attempted to blow in the muzzle to ascertain if it was loaded. While doing this, his foot slipped from the hammer, and the gun was discharged, the charge (an ordinary sized bullet) passed upward through his mouth and lodged at the base of the brain, causing his death almost instantly. A young sister was the only one in the house at the time. The mother and father were summoned and their agony upon learning the nature of the accident was terrible.
