On Monday the citizens of this place were shocked by the intelligence that one of our most respected citizens had died. As the sad news that "Sheriff Ansley is dead" passed from one to another, you could notice a pallor sweep over each face and anxious inquiries were made as to the truth of the statement and the cause of his death. Mr. Ansley had been seen by many of our citizens on the street up to about 9 o'clock. About that time he went to the stable at the rear of his residence on Oak street, he having made arrangements to have a lot of horses delivered there that he had bought from various persons in the county. Shortly after he went to the stable he fell over dead, heart disease being the cause of his death. His body was discovered a few minutes after his death and carried to the house. Daniel Ansley was born near Madison, Westmoreland county, on the 8th day of February, 1829. He was the son of Daniel and Catharine Ansley, nee Fisher. In 1837, when Daniel was 8 years old, his father located in South Mahoning township, Indiana county, on a farm near Plumville, where he resided until he died, a few years ago. On the 24th day of January, 1850, Daniel Ansley, was married to Miss Sarah Lydick, daughter of Wm. and Mary Lydick, nee Neff. They had eight children, six of whom are living and all of them married. When first married, he located in South Mahoning township, where he resided until the spring of 1875, when he removed to this borough, where he has resided ever since. But few men, if any, engaged in business became so generally and favorably known throughout this and adjoining counties. For nearly 30 years he has been engaged in buying and shipping horses, and during the last 20 years, or more, he averaged nearly one car load of horses per month. As he bought nothing but the best horses, for which he always paid a full and satisfactory price, the amount of money he distributed among the farmers of this county is simply enormous. In early life he united with the Mahoning Baptist Church, of which he remained a member until he removed to this place, when he united with the Indiana Baptist Church. As a Christian he was distinguished for his earnestness, zeal, devotion, activity and liberality. At the time of his death he was a deacon in the church, a member of the board of trustees, and superintendent of the Sunday School. Mr. Ansley was elected Sheriff of this county in 1878, and filled the office faithfully and with fidelity. At the expiration of his term of office he vacated it with the best wishes of the citizens of the county, irrespective of party. In all the relations of life, public as well as private, a distinguishable characteristic of Mr. Ansley was his kindly, generous disposition. Faithfully upright as a public officer, eminent and patriotic as a citizen, kind and sympathetic as a friend. We mourn our loss, but our deepest sympathy is due to the family so suddenly bereft of a tender-hearted husband and father.
