He was born in Indiana county PA 11 Jan 1817. His father having died leaving a family of 9 children to the care of his widowed mother, and he being then 17 years of age, he labored industriously to aid the bereaved mother in the support of the family. Soon after the father's death he went from home and engaged to work for a lumbering company and met with a severe accident, a sawlog rolling over him, breaking his thigh and severely bruising his head and face, and preventing him from labor for about one year. About two years after his mother and family removed to Belmont county OH and he was thrown into a frolicking, dancing society. In 1839 he was led to seek salvation through his redeemer and found pardoning grace. In 1840 he was married to Margaret Rose Shipley. Shortly after his marriage he removed to Monroe county and from there to Noble county OH and in 1872 to Guthrie county IA and by letter joined the society at Walnut Grove in this county. His last moments were calm and his end peaceful. He left a wife and 5 sons to mourn his death. One son and 3 daughters had passed before him to the spirit land.
