Calhoun. Mr. Calhoun was born on July 14th, 1834, in Armstrong township, a son of James Calhoun. He worked on the old homestead with his father until about seventeen years of age, and then apprenticed with James Thompson, of Jacksonville, to learn wagon-making, and after learning the trade he worked a short time in Brookville. In 1855 he opened a wagon-making shop in West Lebanon, and remained in that place for about thirteen years. He then engaged in the nursery business and sold fruit trees for several years. In 1879 he moved to this place, and opened a seed and implement store. A few years ago he discontinued selling fruit trees and turned his attention to horticulture. He sold his stock of goods some time previous to his illness to Mr. David McLaughlin. On the 5th of January he was taken seriously ill with pneumonia, and for several days his life was despaired of but soon after was somewhat better. A few days ago he contracted another cold, which resulted in his death on last Sabbath morning. In 1856 he was married to Miss Lillie Welsh. He leaves a wife and four children, three sons and one daughter, to mourn his death. He was a kind and tender husband and an affectionate father. "Bob" as he was familiarly known was a genial whole-hearted man. He followed auctioneering for many years and no man in this community had more friends and fewer enemies than "Bob" Calhoun. He had a kind word for every one and his hand was ever ready to help the needy. His kindly greeting will be missed in this community. He held insurance on his life in the Royal Protective, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, for $2,000 which will be paid to his family.
