He was the eldest son of James and Ellen Carroll (nee Carnahan) and spent his boyhood with his father on a farm. At the age of 18 he went to work on the Canal, being employed in the construction of the Aqueducts across the Allegheny River, and also across Buffalo creek, at Freeport, Armstrong county. He was married Dec. 9, 1830, to Nancy Moorhead, who still survives him, being in her 81st year. From this union were born to them five sons and five daughters, all of whom are alive, except Samuel who died in infancy and James J. who was killed at the battle of Stone River, Tenn. After his marriage, he followed the business of coal mining and salt manufacturing for about fifteen years, between Apollo and Saltsburg. In 1843 he left the Salt works and moved to the vicinity of North Washington, and in the fall of 1846 he moved to Indiana county, where, he resided until the time of his death. He took a great interest in the public schools, serving several years as Director, often visiting the schools, giving an encouraging word to the earnest teacher, and good advice to many a wayward pupil. He was always warmly welcomed to the District Institutes by the teachers, as they knew when he joined in the discussions, he had something worth hearing. Soon after moving to Indiana county, he connected himself with the Washington Presbyterian church. In 1832 after Centre church was organized, he withdrew from Washington and united with Centre. For more than 30 years, he served as a ruling elder with acceptance and profit to the church. Although unable to attend church for nearly two years, he took a great interest in the success of the church work to the time of his death. In his death, the church lost a safe counselor, education an ardent supporter, the community, a good neighbor and citizen and his family, a kind husband and an indulgent father.
