A son of John E. and Bertha Campbell Harkins, he was born Oct. 15, 1884, in Black Lick. Mr. Harkins was a lifelong resident of Black Lick Vol. Fire Dept., and was a member of the LOOM No. 187, Blairsville. He was retired from the Penn Central Railroad in 1949. Surviving are the following children: John, Charles, Mrs. Mary Baker, and Mrs. Ruth Bishop, all of Youngstown, Ohio; George, Chicago, Ill.; Mrs. John (Jean) Mader, Pittsburgh; Mrs. Willard (Pearl) Shearer and Mrs. Melvin (Charlotte) Clawson, both of Black Lick;20 grandchildren; 45 great grandchildren and a great great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Olive Fairbanks Harkins in 1925; two children: James and Grace Mardis; two brothers, Charles and Gillis Harkins; and a half-sister, Kathryn Harkins. The family received friends Tuesday night at the Richard L. Shoemaker Funeral Home, Blairsvile, where services will be held today with a grandson, Pastor Vaughn Taylor officiating. Interment will follow in the Lutheran Chapel Cemetery, Coral.
