Born March 19, 1894, on the family dairy farm in Learn Settlement near Cookport, he was the son of Elias and Annie Brown Learn. He spent his entire life on the family farm. He and his wife Elma Blackburn Learn had celebrated their 70th anniversary on June 20, 1998. He was a member of the New Life Lutheran Church of Marion Center RD 2. Dean was known as a progressive farmer of his time, completing a course in agriculture at the Pennsylvania State College and keeping up with the latest trends. He was also a hard worker, harvesting an eight-acre field of grain by hand during a wet summer when mud prevented getting machinery into the field. He established a herd of registered Guernsey cows while working part-time through the year as a woodsman, coal miner and railroad trackman. Dean served a term as a member of the Green Twp. School Board and was a charter member of the Green Twp. Fair Assoc. as well as a member of many agricultural organizations. Surviving are his wife Elma, of Learn Settlement, Commodore RD 1; two daughters, Mrs. Ila Hoke and husband Paul, St. Thomas, Pa., and Mrs. Joan DuBois and husband Ted, of Allentown; one son, Walter Learn and wife Yvonne, of Learn Settlement, Commodore RD 1. Also surviving are the following grandchildren: Renee Creeden, Fruita, Colo.; Bryan Hoke, St. Thomas, Pa.; Andrea Hoke and Alison Hoke, Elizabethtown, Pa.; Diane DuBois, Felton, Pa.; Beth Habermehl, Topton, Pa.; Tim DuBois, Allentown, Pa.; Marc DuBois, Germansville, Pa.; Ronald, John and Fred Learn, all of Commodore RD 1; Andy Learn, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio; and Jerry Learn, Milton, Vt.; and these great grandchildren: Sean and Eric Creeden, Fruita, Colo.; Lori, Logan and Luke Habermehl, Topton, Pa.; Michael and Matthew Learn, Commodore RD 1; Megan, Christopher and Joshua Learn, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio; and Zachary Raupach-Learn, Milton, Vt. He was preceded in death by his parents and four sisters, Flora Ribblett, Hettie Waddell, Nellie Fleming and Alma Martin. Friends will be received at the Rairigh Funeral Home in Hillsdale from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday where services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday. Pastor Sandra Kennedy will officiate and interment will be in the Cookport Methodist Cemetery.
