Lewis, 90, 675 Ben Franklin Road North, Indiana, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 1997,in Ft. Pierce, Fla. A son of Arthur E. Lewis Sr. and Lazette Stuart, he was born Oct. 22, 1907, in Oakmont. Mr. Lewis attended the Calvary Evangelical Free Church, Indiana. He waS an associate member of the Indian River Presbyterian Church, Ft. Pierce, Fla. Other memberships include the F&AM.Lodge 313, Indi- ana and the Indiana Amateur Radio Club. He was a charter member of the LOOM. He was a board member and treasurer of the Indiana County Mental Health Association in the formative years and was also active for many years with the Mental Health Run. He was a graduate of the Universi- ty of Pittsburgh, earning a degree in business administration. He first worked with WJAS Radio in Pitts- burgh and at WOC Radio in Daven- port, Ohio, before coming to Indiana. In 1939, he opened Art Lewis Radio and Appliance in Indiana, where he displayed and sold the first televi- sion set in Indiana. He added furni- ture to his business in 1958, continuing until his retirement in 1973. A local pioneer in amateur radio, he was one of the founders of the Indiana County Amateur Radio Club. He built much of his own equipment, utilizing state-of-the-art components. His passion was being an amateur ham radio operator. In 1957, he published a register of ham radio operators from around the world. His love of traveling was closely intertwined with ham radio activi- ties. While participating with the American Relay League, he visited South and Central America, Austra- lia, various Caribbean Islands and parts of Europe where he visited operators he had known by call letters only. The British honored him as an appointed member of the FOC as an Outstanding Ham Opera- tor. Surviving are his wife of nearly 58 years, Dorothy McElhoes Lewis, whom he married Feb. 2, 1940; one daughter, Carol Brake, and her husifand; Edgar, Harmony; five grandchildren: Douglas Bigley, Lynn Hadfield, Patricia Hefferan, Adam and Timothy Brake; five great-grandchildren; two sisters: Florence Godfrey, Berkley Springs, W.Va., and Martha Manning, Mor- gantown, W.Va.; and one brother, William Lewis, Mt. Vernon, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Roy, on Jan. 30, 1997; and by three sisters and two brothers. Funeral services were held Satur- day at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Van Campbell officiat- ing. Interment will be made in the Marion Center Memorial Cemetary.
