When first elected in Oct 1842 John was listed at the "Federal Party" but when he ran for reelection in 1843 he was a "Harrison Democrat". Later he attended and spoke at a "Know Nothing" meeting in 1855 but renounced their anti-foreign, anti-Catholic views and presided that same year at an anti-Know Nothing meeting. In 1860 he was defeated as an independent candidate for the House. He was an elder of the Indiana U.P. Church and later of the Beracha U.P. Church, Plumville, 1860. Records in the McEwen Family bible state John Homer McEwen was born in Edinburgh, Scotland but 1860 PA Census records and Indiana County, biographies list his birthplace as Ireland. The Indiana Co., 1880 census lists his daughters Margaret and Jane and his son Christopher, who all claim their father was born in Ireland. John did not leave a will, but papers are on file in the Indiana County Orphan's Court, Probate and Wills. On file is an inventory list and widows list. The John Homer McEwen estate was valued at 2,917.18. Additional Comments: John Homer McEwen was one of the earliest settlers of Plumville, Indiana County, PA.
