A week previous Mr. Mullen contracted pneumonia, which added to his general weakened condition owing to heart trouble, made his condition serious, almost from the first. Although suffering greatly toward the last, he was conscious most of the time and recognized his children when they gathered around him. One daughter, Mrs. Harry Mahaffey, of East Chicago, Ind., arrived here Monday afternoon, but the other child who is absent, William, of Port Arthur, Texas was not here for the funeral. Mr. Mullen was born in Homer City about 72 years ago. Early in life he, entered the employ of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company, serving the road 44 years and retiring seven years ago on a pension. During the greater part of this time, he was passenger conductor on the Indiana branch train, following Conductor Hawkins on the run. He was faithful to the road and its' patrons and it was seldom, if ever, that a serious accident occurred. Early and late and from day to day, except Sabbath, there being no Sabbath trains in his day, Mr. Mullen made two and three trips daily to Blairsville Intersection. Next to the active part he played in railroad affairs, Mr. Mullen was known and loved for his work in the Methodist Episcopal church. For many years he was a member of the board of stewards, and his judgment was carefully considered in every question. Of late, when ill health prevented him from attending every service, he was still sought by the able workers of the church. Mr. Mullen's home life was broken about four years ago, by the death of his wife. His children are among Indiana's most highly esteemed residents and their kindnesses to him, is a pleasant memory for his many friends. Mr. Mullen is survived by these children: Robert M., a well known civil and mining engineer; William, of Port Arthur, Texas; Alice, married to Harry Mahaffey, and Miss Claire Mullen, at home. For many years, the family resided at Ninth and Water streets, but last year they moved to R. M. Mullen's new house a few doors west on Water street. There the funeral services were held at 2:30 o'clock Thursday afternoon, Dr. J. W. Cary, the deceased's pastor, having charge. Private interment followed in the family plot in Oakland cemetery.
