obits: Alexander Sharp, Indiana County, PA SUBJECT: Alexander Sharp Obit. SUBMITTER: Amy Timmerman-Sheehan EMAIL: antique3rd@aol.com DATE: Oct 17, 1999 PASSWORD> SURNAMES: Sharp, Dunbar, Stively, Watson, Silcox, Timmerman Obituary for Alexander Sharp: Alexander Sharp Sr. , at his residence in Kentland, Ind., on Monday moring, April 9th, 1883, at 9 o'clock, of Bright's disease of the kidneys, in his 73rd year. Alexander Sharp, Sr., was born on the 27th day of May, 1810, in Indiana county Pennsylvania, where he lived until the year 1838, when he removed to Crawford couty, Ohio, where he marrried his companion who passed away at this place four years ago the 7th day of March last. During the year 1838, he left Crawford county, Ohio, and settled in Marion county, of that State, and resided there till March 1857. During his residence there he was elected to and filled the office of county treasurer for four years, and also held the office of Justice of the Peace during most of the years he resided in Marion county, and with a brother and John Peacock, the latter now of Rensselaer, engaged largely in canal and railway building. Alexander Sharp, left Marion county, Ohio, the year 1857, for Indiana and settled in this county, then Jasper county, and began the pursuit of farming in what now is Jackson township: and on the organization of Newton county in 1860, Mr. Sharp was chosen Auditor, and he then became a resident of Kentland, which was laid out for the county seat in Feb., 1860, where resided to the day of his death. After his tem of four years as Auditor had expired, Mr. Sharp was engaged by the late Alexander J. Kent, and his book-keeper and business manager, in which position he served his employer with perfect acceptability up to the period when he again entered upon the duties of Auditor of the county, as in 1878, he was again called by a majority of his fellow citizens to that trust for a second time, but did not enter upon his duties of the office until April 21 st 1880, and at the date of his disease lacking one year and 12 days of having served out his term of 4 years. In this connection it may be said in all truth, that his offical services were entirely effcient and accurately performed, and in accodance with his well known principles of fiddlity to a public trust. He leaves a family of four sons and one daughter- all having arrived at man's and women's estate, and all of whom survive him. All the immediate family were here at the time of his decease, excepting one son-Thomas- who had recently gone to Dakota, and was telegraphed as soon as his dangerous condition became apparent. Alexander Sharp, along with his two sisters and a brother-in-law, Mrs. John MaKeever and Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Peacock, now of Rensselaer, joined the M.E. Church in the year 1837, since which time the deceased was a faithful communicant and attendant upon the various services of the Church. it is but a public matter known of all men here, that Mr. Sharp was always faithful in attendance upon the various servies of the chuch in Kentland, and as well a never failing teacher in the Sabbath School when health and weather permitted. In fact he was in his pew at devine service when the more favored in health were absent. He will be missed from his accustomed place, and the Church has lost an upright and christian man, and the community a citizen whose vacant place will not soon be filled by as conscientious and upright a man. He went to his rest in peace and as a dream comth. Though in fair health apparently for one of his age, up to a weed ago last Sunday evening, the great Harvester of the Universe beheld. His harvest ripened and ready for the sickle and it was thrust in, and that so suddenly! Mr Sharp was conscious and cheerful to the end, never betraying a fear of the result of his illness. To say that he was ready to go, is but to repeat a fact which all of his community well know. Funeral rites were held at the M.F. Church at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Revs. Streeter and Meyers, officiating, and the remains interred south of town. ----------------------------------------------------- USGENWEB ARCHIVES NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free genealogical information on the Internet, data may be freely used for personal research and by non-commercial entities as long as this message remains on all copied material.
