INDIANA EVENING GAZETTE March 24, 1919 COUNTY NATIVE MEETS SAD DEATH IN PITTSBURGH William R. Smyers, 71, Formerly of Grant Township Crushed Between Wall Shaft and Elevator Well Known Here Caught between the wall shaft and the elevator he was attempting to operate, William R. Smyers, aged 71, of Pittsburgh, a native of Grant township, Indiana county, and a clerk of the safe deposit vault department of the Fidelity Title and Trust Company of that city, was crushed to death Saturday afternoon. Workmen in the building say the aged man had obtained keys to the elevator from a janitor shortly after noon Saturday, and two hours later the body was found in the elevator on the first floor. It is believed he attempted to start the car and his head was crushed in the shaft. Mr. Smyers would have been 72 next May 15. Last October he and his wife celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. They went to Pittsburgh from Marion Center 20 years ago. Mr. Smyers was vault clerk for the Fidelity Title and Trust Company, and gave eminent satisfaction. His health was excellent and he walked the two miles form his home to the bank nearly every day. Euwer, a teacher in the Manchester school; a granddaughter, Miss Eva G.
