Born June 24, 1916, in Heilwood, he was the son of Joseph and Anna Lawrence Turko. Mr. Turko was a member of the Church of the Resurrection in Heil- wood. He was a veteran on World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He was captured during the North Afri- can campaign and had been a pris- oner of war in Germany. He had also received the Purple Heart. He had been employed by the Barnes & Tucker Coal Company as a miner and was a member of the UMWA Local in Bakerton and the Heilwood American Legion Post 936. Surviving are his wife, Betty Ste- phens Turko, of Heilwood; a son, Pete and his wife Carren, Fairfax, Va., one daughter, Pam, of Mentcle, and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Gary, who died in 1965; six brothers, George, Mike, Charles, Nick, Joe and John; and two sisters, Mary Kenyan and The- resa Maderia. Friends will be received on Mon- day from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Harry J. Bence Funeral Home in Clymer. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at the Church of the Resurrection in Heilwood with the Rev. Stephen Bugay as celebrant. Interment will be in the Oakland Cemetery in Indiana. Military rites will be accorded by the Heilwood American Legion Post 936.
