Carrier Noted county Republican was retired truck driver Gary D. Carrier of Hermitage, a noted county Republican, died from gallbladder cancer at 6 a.m. Wednesday, October 20, 2005, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 70 years of age. Born on Jan. 16, 1935, in Kane, Pa., Mr. Carrier was a son of Roy and Mildred Carrier of Jackson Township, who predeceased him in 1970. A lifetime Republican activist, Mr. Carrier served in numerous capacities for the Republican party, among which were committeeman for Jackson Township and Mercer County area chairman. Mr. Carrier was one of the founders of Mercer County Young Republicans and served in a leadership role in the organization for many years. He was subsequently elected national committeeman of the Young Republicans of Pennsylvania. Mr. Carrier, a graduate of the former Stoneboro High School, was a career truck driver, retiring from Preston Truck Lines in 1996. He was an active member of Local 261 of the Teamsters and was previously employed for 14 years at the former Sharon Steel Corp.'s Farrell plant and by the State of Pennsylvania as a realty tax investigator. He enjoyed wintering at his home in Holiday, Fla., with his wife of 51 years, Marlene Kahle Carrier, whom he married Nov. 21, 1953. He was an avid fisherman and passed on his joy for the sport to his son and his grandchildren. While in high school, he played the trumpet in several bands and, during his retirement, enjoyed playing his keyboard. Mr. Carrier was a parishioner of Church of Notre Dame in Hermitage. In addition to his wife, Mr. Carrier is survived by: two daughters and a son, Deborah Carrier Johnson, Traveler's Rest, S.C., Laura Carrier McQuaid, Millerstown, Pa.; and Dennis G. Carrier, Hermitage; five grandchildren, R. Michael Johnson, Myrtle Beach, S.C., Dana V. Johnson, Charlotte, N.C., Benjamin H. Johnson, Mooresville, N.C.; and Shane and Kayla McQuaid, Millerstown; and two brothers, David K. Michael, Toledo, Ohio; and Derry Michael, State College, Pa. Carrier Gary D., 70, Hermitage. Calling hours: Visitors will be received from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday (10-21-05) in Cunningham Funeral Home Inc., 144 S. Pitt St., Mercer. Service: Mass of Christian burial at 2:30 p.m. Saturday (10-22-05) in Church of Notre Dame, Hermitage, with the Rev. Jeffrey Noble, pastor as celebrant. Interment: Private following the Mass in St. John's Cemetery, Brookville, Pa. Additional Comments: He was adopted as a small child by his paternal aunt and uncle (Mildred Maude Michael and Roy H. Carrier) after he became an orphan and his name was changed to Carrier. Birth parents: David Wade Michael and Freda Thelma Hottel.
