Runk & Co., 1897, Volume II, Page 977. _____________________________________________________________________ WILLIAM CONN, Spruce Hill township, Juniata county, Pa., was born in East Waterford, Juniata county, Pa., August 22, 1855. David Conn, father of William Conn, was born in Tuscarora township, and is of Scotch-Irish descent. He opened the first store in Spruce Hill township, and for thirty years has conducted a successful business as a general merchant and a dealer in produce. Mr. Conn was married in Spruce Hill township to Hannah J. Beale, of that township. Their surviving children are: Mary A. (Mrs. Theodore Meminger), of Pleasant View, Pa; John C., of Spruce Hill; William; Elmer, of McKean county; and Annie (Mrs. William Shearer), of McKean county. Eight children died in infancy. Mr. Conn was a Democrat in politics, and was postmaster of Spruce Hill for thirty-seven years. He was also school director and served in other township offices. He was a steward of the Methodist Episcopal church, and was a teacher in and superintendent of the Sunday-school. William Conn received his education in the public schools and in the academy of his native township. He was then employed in the store of his father until 1875. Five years later he formed a partnership with his brother, and for eleven years they conducted the store of their father at Spruce Hill. In 1895, Mr. Fitzgerald acquired full control, and has since conducted the business. He was married January 23, 1889, to Annie M. Reed, a daughter of John Reed. Their children are: D. Marion; Frank; Guy; and George. In his political views Mr. Conn is a Democrat; he was appointed postmaster at Spruce Hill in 1895, and has also served as auditor of the township. He holds the office of steward in the Methodist Episcopal church, and is a teacher in and superintendent of the Sunday-school.
