D. 1882 To the Commissioner of Pensions Washington D. C. I, David S. Ziders, whose claim for a Pension is no. 349,720, make the following statement: In the year 1860, which was (5) five years previous to my enlistment in the U. S. Military service, I lived in Beale Township Juniata Co. Pa. and P. O. address was Academia Pa., thence in the spring of 1861, on the first day of April I moved from Beale Twp. To Greenwood Twp. Juniata Co. Pa. and lived there at then at the time of my enlistment P. O. address Millerstown Perry Co. Pa. My occupation has been that of a Shoemaker ever since 1840, and since my discharge I have worked at shoemaking at different times, when I was able. From the time of my discharge up to the 2d day of April 1867 I still lived in Greenwood Twp. Juniata Co. Pa.-On the 2d day of April 1867 I moved to Greenwood Twp. Perry Co. Pa. P. O. still Millerstown Pa. and tried to work at Shoemaking but could not do much on account of disability. On the 5th day of Jany 1870 I moved from Greenwood Twp. Perry Co. back to Greenwood Twp. Juniata Co. Pa. –On the 3d day of April 1877 I moved into the vicinity of Richfield Juniata Co. Pa. P. O. address Richfield Pa. –On the 1st day of April 1878 I moved to West Perry Twp. Snyder Co. Pa. –P. O. Richfield Pa. and of the 3d day of Feby 1881 I moved from West Perry Twp. Snyder Co to Walker Twp. Juniata Co. Pa. P. O. Address Thompsontown Juniata Co. Pa. –This is my present residence and P. O. address. I enlisted in the service of the U. S. on the 4th day of October 1864 and was examined by Surgeons at Harrisburg Pa. and was pronounced a sound man. I remained at Camp Curtin ten (10) days or two (2) weeks then I was forwarded to Camp Cadwalader at Philada. Pa. and was then again examined and pronounced a sound man. I remained then until about the middle of November of that year when I was assigned to Company “O” 198th Regt. Pa. Vols. I was then forwarded to Camp Distributton near Alexandria Va. From then up to City Point, and after remaining there a week or ten (10) days was sent to the Regiment (198th Pa vols) in from of Petersburg Va. This found complaint or Chronic Diarrhea, commencig on me about the 1st of December 1864. I had to take medicine from the Regimental Surgeon – He treated me all the time I was in the service. I was not sent to any Hospital, but why I did not know. I have forgotten the Regimental Surgeon’s name. I was not able to do any duty, scarcely while in the service, was always sick and (page is cut off) Sometimes in tents, when we had them. After my discharge in 1865, when I got home, I was so weak that I could not do anything whatever. I went to Dr. Simeon Lineaweaver of Millerstown Pa. he saying that I should use Bitter lime of Iron, as I had scarcely any blood in me. I used it but it done me very little good – then I used two (2) bottles of Dr. Fameys blood cleanser – it done no good. I then received treatment from Dr. C. L. Wimer of Richfield Pa. but Wimer is now dead – died in the fall of 1878. I had a very severe attack of Typhoid Malaria about the 1st of December 1897 and was treated by Dr. J. W. Dickard of Richfield Pa. As to the performance of manual labor I can truly say that I cannot do much work of any kind, either shoemaking is out door work. When the diarrhea sets in I can’t do any Shoemaking on account of pain in the bowels, and it is getting worse every year. In the winter of 1879 it commenced on me about the 1st of Feby. and continued until the 1st of April – Sometimes it lasts but a few weeks – In 1881 it set in about the 1st of August and lasted ten (10) weeks. It commenced on me this Spring (1882) about the 15th of March and has not altogether stopped yet. I am receiving treatment from Dr. I. N. Gnibb of Thompsontown Pa. – so that about one half my time I am not able to perform manual labor. David S. Ziders State of Pennsylvania County of Juniata SS Before me George S. Since 1881 I have seen & prescribed for him at intervals of from three days to three or four months and always for diarrhea. The least exposure to wet or cold increases the severity of his complaint. In connection with this diarrhea, he is the subject of hernia, right side, which he alleges occurred in the year 1867 as a result of severe straining at stool, during an attack of this diarrhea, which opinion as a cause of his hernia, I am inclined to share. I cannot furnish the testimony of a commissioned officer or two comrady who from personal knowledge can testify as to time, place, and all the circumstances under which the alleged chronic Diarrhea was contracted, and the reason why is this. The officers and nearly all the privates reside in the City of Philadelphia and I have not got the means to go to the city, and in the second place, I am not able to travel that Distance., as I have been Sick ever Since I returned from Harrisburg on the 21st Feb 1883. I have written several times to my attorney Mr. McMichael to get that testimony for me. As he is right there in the city and could get that evidence for me if only would, but from yours of the 20th march he has not done so. Now I can tell you’re the place where I contracted this disease, it was at Hicksford near the line of North Carolina. The 5 corps was ordered to take possession of that place. So we went Down from in front of Petersburg about the first of January 1865 and captured it. Then we encamp in an old corn Stock field for the night, and that night it rained and got very cold the water freezing as it fell and we all got very wet and from that nights exposue I have chronic diarrhea. I had a diarrhea prior to that night. But from that night it turned from a yellow to a bloody stool. I have written to H. A.
