Life History, Letter dated 13 Dec 1886 noted at Washington D.C. 18, Dec. Not copied in entirety or verbatim. Post Office Addresses from time of return from Army in fall of 1865. To Spring 1866 was Waverly, Luzerne (now Lackawanna County Pennsylvania to Spring 1868 was Abington Luzerne (now Lackawanna) County- Pa to Spring 1871 was Abington Luzerne now Lackawanna County, Pa. Spring 1874 was Providence Luzerne now Lackawanna County, Pa. Spring 1880 was Hyde Park Luzerne now Lackawanna County, Pa. Spring 1882 was Dickson Luzerne now Lackawanna County, Pa. Present Dec - 1886 Hyde Park Luzerne now Lackawanna County, Pa. Since the Hyde Park Post Office has been consolidated with the Scranton Post Office, which is about three years ago 1883 it has been Scranton Penna at 132 North Hyde Park Avenue. My occupation as follows, at Waverly from the fall of 1865 to the Spring of 1866 at home with my mother who has a small house in Waverly- I worked a little through the winter at cutting wood for some of the neighbors. Henry Thompson of Waverly, Penna, was one I worked for. Benjamin Heavers was another. I was bothered with rheumatism, contacted Dr. I. M. Wheeler of Waverly, Penna. In the spring of 1866 I took a farm of 100 acres (half of it woodland) to work on share from my Uncle Alva Reynolds (this gives the clue to his mother's family) of Abington Lackawanna and moved to live these a year (he was) troubled with rheumatism, disabled as much as a month out of the year. In the spring of 1868 (he) moved to Providence a suburb of Scranton, and stayed there a year and worked in the sawmill of Benjamin (Willis) worked pretty steady that year. In the spring of 1869, moved back to Abington, and rented a house from William Hill, worked out by the day, continued this mode of life for his years, during which did work for Frank Johnson, Alva Johnson, Horace Scinrell (?), John Parks and Elisa White, William Fisk and others. Lost much time with rheumatism in the winter and bad weather about ten (?) months per year. Went to Dr. Van Sickle of Clarks Green (Nov 1886) of Waverly, Lackawanna Co. Pa. In the spring of 1871 moved to Scott Township Luzerne County (now Lackawanna) Pa. and there bought 4 acres of land, worked it, and also worked out by the day. Stayed there about three years, suffered, but didn't have the Dr. much didn't have the money to hire a doctor, lost at least 1/6 of the time during those three years. In the spring of 1874 left Scott Township, moved to Hyde Park, Luzerne County (now Lackawanna Co.) Pa. another suburb of Scranton. I had paid $50.00; on it sold out my interest to Frank Lamereaux. At Hyde Park commenced driving a team for Philip Wickizer, hauling stone and lumber which I continued about a year, not disabled much that year. Next year went to work in Philip Wickizer's stone quarry, but do not think I made half time during that year. In addition to rheumatism was laid up one month on account of having a finger mashed. Dr.Allyn of Hyde Park attended my family and me at intervals, during these two years. About the spring of 1876, moved to Newton Township, Luzerne County (now Lackawanna Co.) Pa. P.O. Addresses remains Hyde Park, went to work on farm of Benjamin White who now (1886) lives in Wilkes-Barre, worked nearly all the time for four years. I worked some for Elias Smith and David Cosner and Harry Smith during that time (note whether this Harry Smith could have been my father)? Father moved to Hyde Park about 1885 where he lived in a house at the corner of Chestnut and Prince Street. This house I believe was owned by a Mr. Cosner, father was known by many at that time as Harry Smith. This excerpt is included by Howard N. Smith of 4414 Colesville (?) Rd., University Park, Hyartsville Md. Who copied this ___ for her cousin, Ruth Cahoon of 1108 Fanfield St. Scranton, Pa. Now deceased and my brother William's daughter, but mostly for Benjamin White these 4 years (list or best) 1/6 of the time during of these years Dr. Allyn (Allen) my Doctor. In the winter or early spring of 1880 I moved to Dickson City Borough of Lackawanna Co. Pa. Went to work for the Delaware Lackawanna and Western Railway Co. driving a team hauling coal and worked for them nearly two years, nearly half of the time was disabled by rheumatism. My boy drove the team some of the time, and some of the time it had to lay idle. The disease increased very much Dr. Kennedy of Priceville (P.O.) Dickson City, treated me. He told me I would have to give up work, that I had rheumatism around my heart and all over my body. I was not fit to work for weeks at a time, could not lie down. Although Kennedy was my doctor these two years, once when I was in Providence during that time, a lump above my heart swelled up as big as my fist. Went to see Dr. Hollister of Providence he said it was rheumatism (on second look at the dates -this could not have been my father he refers to, dates do not coincide, period spoken of in text is 1876-80 period I had in mind as part 1885 Howard Smith) About the spring of 1882 moved to Hyde Park, City of Scranton moved to A.P. Clark's house on Main Street 3 months of work that year, canvassed for Picture a little, (????), tried work on a farm worked only 2 ‡ times in haying. In the winter went to Jesse Brown's at Abington to cut wood, was taken sick there when about half finished, and was laid up at the house of Lovisa Wickizer for three weeks before I could be brought home. Dr. Van Sickle Attended me there. The second year moved to Philip Wickizer's house corner of 10th and Oxford Streets Hyde Park Scranton, worked for him on his farm outside the city, when able, not half the time. Dr. E. A. Hermans ( or Hurmans) and Dr. Allen (Dr. Hermans was the attendant at my (???? Sister Alice Emma's birth, he substituted for Dr. Allen I believe, who was not available at that time, according to Ethel, this latter may apply to her death rather than birth- I may have it twisted but it is one way or the other (Howard Smith) no -Cahoon) In 1884 I moved to R.W. Luce's House no 137 N. Hyde Park Ave and have lived there ever since. I had in 1886 a license to peddle, and sometimes do a little at that. I have a wife and four children and they have been obliged to support themselves and me to since 1882. My wife and one boy are the only ones that can do any work. Signed Stephen H.
