LANCASTER COUNTY, PA and MONROE COUNTY, WV - Swope Family Bible SWOPE cousins: My Dad had in his files a photostat of some pages of a SWOPE Family Bible. Some of you have expressed some interest in this document, so I am posting the text. I do not know where the original Bible is now, or even if it now exists, but a note on the photostat says it belonged to J.G. Alderson in 1915. It chronicles some of the descendants of Joseph Ulrich SWOPE, one of the first settlers in what is now Monroe County, WV, son of Yost SCHWAB, who settled in Lancaster County, PA in about 1720. Those of you with Clinton County, KY SWOPE's, note there is one reference to a George there. I don't know much about photostating, but it is like a negative, black pages, white text, VERY difficult to read in places. I tried to stay as close to the original as I could, spelling and all. My Dad says he thinks he remembers borrowing the Bible from his uncle, Buell SWOPE and photostating them. From the letters attached, I can guess that Buell must have gotten them from his father, (my great grandfather) JJ Swope. Descriptions of the pages are in square brackets, while the rest of the test is copied as faithfully as I could. I am including the letters that were attached. Just think, George Alderson attended a Confederate Soldier's Reunion in 1915 and had stories to tell !!! If only there were more letters from him! I hope the Bible still exists! If anyone knows of it, I'd love to hear from you. ******************************* Swope Family Bible (held by J. G. With love to all Arthur Leach [Second letter attached] Alderson, W. Va. Oct. 18, 15 Col J. J. Swope Dear Joe, After apologizing for delay in answering yours of the 15th was attending Confederate reunion at Ronceverte and had a grand time I mean by meeting with old friends - met two who I went to school with 65 years ago, for the first time since, but this is not answering your questions. First as to the Fort on Laynes bottoms I heard my Brother Saz that there was no authoritative account as when the Fort was built or by whom built or if ever used for protection there is not any definite account of it. It is certain that when the last Indian raid was made Jarrett's Fort was resorted to and here may answer the question as to Griffith being killed as you may know was the last Indian raid Judge Miller has it in his History of Summers County in 1790 but am shure that it is incorrect and feel shure that it was 1793 and at that time Jarretts Fort was used but the Indians did not cross Greenbrier River at that time. Returning to the Fort on the Lane bottom when a boy have seen the writing of the Fort frequently it was quite small but deemed to have been laid of in regular form with Block houses on each corner of Fort. The Jarrett Fort was under the charge of Gen Lewis who commanded as a mj this part of the county. Have you ever read in old Book - title - Border Warfare that gives the most accurate account of the early settlement of this section that I have ever read Charlie Pelson saz that Ben Flint had a copy and thinks that one Pitzer has it - he promised to get it for me. Joe it is a right hard task for me to write I am 82, wish I could see you and talk to you (I can talk yet) I send you in separate covers a brief History of the Alderson Family - Think you can get what you want out of that Please return when done with it. I wrote a History of the Alderson family myself several years ago and also recently for Mr. Morton who is writing the History of Monroe Co What about your ancestors they were among the first settlers Have you any authenticated History of them Will be glad to give you any information I can - will look over some old papers I have and if I find anything of interest will let you know. Yours truly Geo Alderson [Third letter attached] Mr. J. J. Swope Dr Sir and friend I enclose your request as to the Birth and Death of E. F. Swope and Martha R. Haynes also Abbie A. Alderson. I would be glad to have a copy of same. I am fairly good Health but very lonely Hope you and Family are all in good Health J. G. Alderson 15 day of next Nov I will be 84 years old.
