Hans2 GRAF [3409] (unknown1), born 1661 in, Switzerland; died 7 May 1746 in Earl Township, Lancaster, Penn; buried 1746 in New Holland, Earl Twp., Lancaster Co., Pa. He married (1) abt. 1683 in Alsace, France, unknown (---) [16652], born abt. 1663; died bef. 1686 in Alsace, France. He married (2) in 1687 in Alsace, France, Susan ORNDORFF [3410], born abt. 1661 in Switzerland. Notes for Hans GRAF HANS GRAF FAMILY Sources used in compiling this history were "Hans Graf" "A First Settler" by Lindsay Brian PB 929.2 #1304. Also Wills, Birth, Death and Marriage records. Hans Graf was born in Switzerland in 1661, and during the persecution of the Mennonites in his native country, he with others fled to Alsace. In Alsace he bore the title of Baron Von Weldon. He was a brother - in - law of Lieut. Col., and Duke of Metzer, who was Governor of Breda, and it was from him the Grafs or Groves were entitled to the immense wealth in the father land. At one time none stood nearer in confidence to the throne than Hans Graf, but owing to this very prominence he became the target for false accusations from jealous parties. He was accused of treason against the government and his wealth confisated. The accusation were proved utterly false and he was publicly exonerated and given invitation to return and his wealth and property would be fully restored to him, but Hans Graft scorned their overtures and declined to return. He came to America and became in the new world a man of wealth and prominence. Hans Graf arrived in Pennsylvania about 1695 and emigrated to Germantown where he remained several years. Hans with other Mennonite families moved west and took up their abode on the northern side of Pequea Creek. It was not until 1717 however that pioneers found their way in to Earl Township, Lancaster County. This honor belongs to Hans Graf, for while in pursuit of his strayed horses, he found his way into what is familiarly known as Groff's Thal, within the limits of west Earl Township. Pleased with the country, he had his wife, children and chattels conveyed thither and located on the stream now called Graf's Run, where he soon took up land. He was the earliest settler in these townships, so also was he the wealthiest citizen at the time of his death in 1746. This Hans Graf was a man of more than ordinary force of character; he was the principal person in the new settlement that sprung up around him, even to the time of his death his name frequently occurs in the Colonial Records; he was one of the persons named to lay out the King's High Road from Lancaster to Philadelphia in 1733. Along with many others he was naturalized on Oct. 14, 1720, in the third year of the reign of George the second. He had already built a mill prior to 1729 and when in that year the township was organized the citizens honored both themselves and him in giving his name 'Graf', in its English equivalent, Earl, to the new district. The foundation stones of the cabin he built in 1718 are yet to be seen in the barn yard of his lineal descendant, Levi W. Groff, who owns the residence on the old homestead. The survey of his land was made on October 4, 1718 and calls for 1150 acres; on the 28th of February 1724, he bought 250 acres from Martin Kendrick and Hans Herr, who had purchased 5,000 acres from Penn on 22nd of November, 1717. Under these two warrants there were surveyed to him, in a single tract on a branch of the Conestoga, 1419 acres on October 10, 1727, for which a deed was made to him by Thomas Penn on Nov. 18,1737. This deed after citing the circumstances of the survey, goes on and makes transfer "of all mines, minerals, quarries, meadows, marshes, etc. The price paid for this goodly tract of land was L 141, 180 and One English shilling quit rent for every one hundred acres, to be paid annually on every first of March in the city of Lancaster, Penn. Ascertaining in some way that his tract did not contain the full number of acres called for by his deed he asked for a re-survey, which was granted October 16, 1742, when 91 additional acres were given him as shortage. West Earl also boasts of having had within her bounds one of the first, perhaps the first Mill in Lancaster County, Penn. This stood on the south side of the Conestoga, right at the point where the Concalico unites with the stream. It was made a corner of Warwick Township when that district was organized in 1729, and only through that fact has its existence been preserved from utter oblivion. How long it was there prior to that date is unknown. An ancient deed covering this spot was also found and mentions it as a mill site and speaks of the mill race, but the mill had even then disappeared. Hans Graf the first settler in these townships was the builder and owner of this early mill. She married (2) on 15 May 1854, Adam KRAMER [597], born abt. 1823. Notes for Elizabeth Ann GRAFT John purchased 40 acres of land 10 October 1842, this must be where they moved to in 1843. This parcel was near Morley in Jones County, and is located on the south west quarter of the south east quarter of Section 19, Township 83 orth range 3 west. John also purchased by Patent all of the north east quarter of Section 19. This gave him 240 acres of land purchased from 10 October 1843 to 1 June 1849. Elizabeth sold part of the 240 acres after his death. She retained the 40 acres situated on the north east quarter of the north east quarter of Section 19, where the house was. (my wife May and I visited this site and the basement of the house is all that is visible now. It states in the Obituary of Elizabeth's, that she moved to a farm near Morley from Ohio and lived there the rest of her life. She probably meant except the year they lived in Marion Township, Linn County, Iowa. Another discrepancy to the statement in the obituary, Landora Jane RICHTSTINE (one of John and Elizabeth's daughters said she was born in Olin Jones County, Iowa. This is about 6 or 7 miles from the farm. Does that mean they were living there or they just took Elizabeth there to have the baby. That distance in a wagon would be quite a stretch in 1849. When John died he left with his wife, four helpless children to raise. Elizabeth only 27 year old at the time faced the emergency without a murmur. She was born 22 May 1823 in Butler County, Ohio and died October 16, 1902 and is buried in Center Cemetery near Morley, Iowa. She was a member of the M.E. Church and was one of its most faithful workers. OBITUARY Elizabeth GRAFT was born in Butler County, Ohio, May 22, 1823, and died at her home near Morley, Jones County, Iowa. aged 79 years 4 months 25 days. She was married to John RICHTSTINE Jr., December 17, 1839 in Butler County, Ohio. In 1843, they moved to Iowa, and located on the farm where she spent he life. Four children were born to them. J.G. RICHTSTINE, Mary FARNHAM, Margaret BYERLY and Landora TALLMAN, all of whom are still living. Her husband departed this life December 18, 1850, leaving her with four helpless children. She faced the emergency without a murmur. In 1854, she was married to Adam Kramar, of Jones County, who still lives here. To them were born four children J. W. KRAMAR, David Kramar, Etta Gaul and Alona, all of who are living excepting Alona, who died in infancy. The sons and daughters have all had families, so there are numbered forty- four grandchildren and forty-one great grandchildren to this worthy couple. Six only of the grandchildren and six of the great grandchildren have died. As to the religious views of the subject of this sketch, her neighbors would be good witnesses. She had been a faithful worker in the M.E. Church for the past sixty-two years. She started with $50.00, the subscription, which made possible the erection of the church from which she borne to her burial. She held her membership at the Walnut Grove Church. Her living children are all thankful for the religious training given them by a loving mother. The funeral services were held at the Morley M.E. Church, conducted by the pastor, the Rev I. E. Wilcox, assisted by the Rev. Nathan Potter, a life long friend of the family. There sermon, founded upon the words blessed are the dead which die in the lord from hence-forth. Was a clear unfolding of scripture teaching concerning the immortality of the soul and immortality of blessedness to them who through faith in the lord Jesus Christ, shall be found in him at the great day, and immortality of non- blessedness to them who refuse to respond to the love of God as recalled in the life of His Son, that whosoever liveth in him shall not perish but have everlasting life. A short address by Elder Potter was loving tribute to the memory of the deceased, and freighted with word of comfort to the bereaved. A vast congregation far beyond the capacity of the church had assembled to drop their tear of sorrow and sympathy and to look once more on the face of one who, like Abraham, was the friend of God, and also everyone's friend. The body was laid to rest in the beautiful little cemetery beside U.B. Church at Center, from which it shall respond to God's call and come forth to a glorious resurrection. On 15 May 1854 Elizabeth married Adam KRAMER, of Jones County. In time he repurchased most of the land that was the original 240 acres of John and Elizabeth's farm Jacob RICHTSTINE, John and Elizabeth's oldest son moved to Indiana when a boy to visit his relative the Gray family. Where he probably stayed until he married. Also Mary C. was living with the John P. Graft family (Her Grand-father). So its possible that there was conflict with the children from the two families. Early in 1850 John with his family moved to Marion Township Linn County, Iowa and lived near the St Julian Post Office. (this is verified in a statement made by James Oscar RICHTSTINE, John's grand-son they lived in Marion Township). The 1850 Census for Linn County, also puts John and his family in Linn County, John's occupation was carpentry. John and his family lived in Linn County until at lease December 1850 because on 18 December 1850 and in Marion Township, John died a very young man. His will which was written 10 December 1850 left all his real estate and personal property to his wife Elizabeth. The family of which he is a member is of German origin, and was first represented in America by Hans Graf, our subject's distent grandfather, who emigrated to the United States in 1691 and settled in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He married Mary Ferree, a French lady, and they lived on a large plantation. Hans Graf's decedents removed to Maryland and had large plantations and were extensive slave- holders. From Maryland some moved to Virginia, and thence to Kentucky. During the residence of the family in Maryland, Abram Graft, our subjects's great-grandfather, was born. In 1800 he came d settled near the village of Seven Mile, where he entered a tract of land from the Government. Clearing it of its heavy timber growth, he gave his attention to its cultivation, and in time became the owner of a good farm. His chidden were: George P. (John A. Grafft grandfather) Moses and Abraham.. George P. who was born in 1804, married Miss Mary Ann, daughter of Thomas Moorehead. In early manhood he entered land in an Indian reservation near Indianapolis, which he later traded for property near Seven Mile, and settling upon the latter place, in time became the owner of over four hundred acres. With his wife, he held membership in Methodist Episcopal Church. He was bereaved by the death of his faithful helpmate in 1862. He survived her a quarter of a century, passing away November 14, 1887. They were the parents of five children, of whom one daughter died in infancy, and a son was killed by a house at the age of thirteen; Abraham resides in Butler County; Samuel is our subject's father; John, the youngest of the family, died in 1875. In Butler County, Ohio, Samuel Grafft was born, October 19, 1841, and upon a farm he was reared to manhood. Four year were devoted to study in that institution, and in 1889 he was graduated from the department of natural sciences. After some months spent in travel, he entered upon the study of medicine, his special preceptors being Drs. Merrill and Edwin and Joseph Ricketts, of Cincinnati. In September, 1889, he entered the Miami Medical College of Cincinnati, from which he was graduated in April, 1892, with the degree of M.D. At once after completing his medical studies, he opened an office in Hamilton, where he has remained.
