All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/lancaster/ _______________________________________________ Pension Application Of Anthony Ament, National Archives Microseries M804, Roll __, Application #S1159 Hardin County, KY On this 21st day of January, 1833, personally appeared in open court before the Hardin County Court, Anthony Ament, a resident of said county and state, aged 75 years: In the summer of the year 1776, he volunteered under Captain Clotz of the Pennsylvania Riflemen in the town of Lancaster in said state. The name of his lieutenant was ?Moyers, and the ensign ?Huggle [or ?Fluggle]. That under said officers, he was marched to the state of New York where they joined the regiment commanded by Colonel Hand, who he believes belonged to the regular army. He was taken thence to Long Island, where they joined the main army commanded by Sterling. At Long Island they had an engagement with the British Army in which the Americans were defeated, in which a part of the American army was taken and the balance retreated to the city of New York. From New York they retreated under the command of General Washington to the White Plains where they had another engagement with the British in which the British were repulsed. >From the White Plains they marched to Hackensack and thence to Newark and thence to Brunswick, thence to Trenton, where they surprised and took a part of the British Army composed of Hessians. From Trenton, he marched home to Lancaster, having served a period of six months. He received a regular discharge from his captain, but has long since lost or mislaid it, deeming it after the great lapse of time of little value. In the fall of the year 1777, he was pressed by one ____ Ross in the town of Lancaster and was put to driving a team in the service of the United States, the ___ company and team having been made up in said neighborhood by impressment. From Lancaster he drove said team to Brandywine, where a battle was fought between the American and British armies in which the Americans were forced to retreat. Thence he went to Philadelphia, thence to Valley Forge, where the army went into winter quarters. That ____ he returned home, having been out about three months. In the spring of 1779, he was again pressed by the same officers as ______ in the service at Lancaster. From there he went loaded with ammunition to the state of Rhode Island. This time he was in the service about two months. In the year previous he was engage in the same way hauling flour from Lancaster to a little place called Millington. Here, it would fall into the hands of the British. Also in hauling ______ from Philadelphia for the same reason. In this period he was engage for about two months. He knows of no person by whom he can prove any part of his services in the _____ country except Philip Ament, whose deposition is hereto annexed, which contains the amount of his knowledge on the subject, and who, from age and infirmity is not able, without great inconvenience, to attend court in person… The application of Anthony Ament being returned for further _____ the applicant appeared in the Hardin County Court on the 15th day of July 1833, being first duly sworn, deposeth and saith: That he was born in York County in the state of Pennsylvania in the year 1757. That he has no record of his age except what he has made himself in his own family record which he made from what he understood from his parents. That in the year 1782 he removed from Lancaster County, where he lived when he entered the service to Shenandoah County, Virginia, where he lived until the year 1804, when he removed to Hardin County, KY, where he has resided ever since.
