Items From the Columbia Independent, August 26, 1891

  J. C. Torbett has disposed of his cigar store, a few doors above the post-
office, to his clerk, Frederick C. Wagner, jr.


  Robert E. Peregoy and Hattie, his wife, were put on trial on a charge of 
larceny.  The prosecutor was Charles P. McArthur.
  His testimony was that he boarded at the Tremont House, Columbia, where the 
defendants also boarded.  A few weeks ago there was stolen from under a pin 
cushion a box containing diamonds and jewelry valued at $700.  This box of 
jewelry was sent by express from Columbia in a satchel by Mrs. Peregoy, 
addressed to Wm. R. Penn, Newark, N.J.  When the theft was discovered the box 
was intercepted at the Adams Express office in this city and returned to 
witness.
  F. X. Ziegler, the express agent, testified to Mrs. Peregoy sending the 
satchel away and Constable Wittick to its recovery.
  Mrs. Peregoy's father, brother, husband, Mr. McArthur, and Constable Wittick 
testified that she was subject to epileptic fits and while under their influence 
she was not accountable for what she did.
  The district attorney abandoned the case against the husband, the evidence 
failing to show that he was present when the jewelry was stolen or shipped.  As 
to the case against Mrs. Peregoy the district attorney did not think there 
should be a conviction on account of the condition of the woman's mind, and a 
verdict of not guilty was taken.

Mrs. W. E. Crist is on a trip to the village of Greencastle.

Miss Anna North, and Mr. Jos. A. Janney, jr., of Chestnut Hill, are the guests 
of Miss Rena North.

Mrs. Vena Taylor and family returned from Atlantic City on Saturday.

Chas. F. Young is in Washington, D.C., attending the funeral of his sister.

Hal. and Bert. Johnson are the guests of Mrs. E. S. Musser.

Harry Smith and daughter, of Scranton, are on a visit to town.

Miss Alicia Brown has returned from her visit to Baltimore, and is a guest of 
Miss North.

Mrs. A. J. Kauffman is on a visit to Mechanicsburg.

S. F. Eberlein of Philadelphia, was in town over Sunday.

George Melbert of the INDEPENDENT, is on a visit to Baltimore.

Mrs. W. P. Withers and daughter, and Miss Blanche Bressler, of Philadelphia, who 
has been Mrs. W.'s guest, are on a visit to Loch Haven.

Miss Flora Pfoutz, of Baltimore, is a guest at the Kehler mansion.

Mrs. B. F. Dean is at Ocean Grove.

Mr. H. F. Bruner and wife are at Asbury Park.

Albert Hartman is at Atlantic City to examine the fall style of hats.

Miss Rena North has returned from Bedford Springs.

Miss Mabel Shenberger has gone to York county for chincapins.

Mrs. Florence Haldeman is on a visit to her mother, Mrs. Scott Patton.  She came 
direct from Savannah, Ga.

Mr. and Mrs. F. P. D. Miller have gone to Ocean Grove to hear Talmage.

Editor Yocum and wife left for Ocean Grove on Saturday.

Mrs. Eckman and daughters are at Ocean Grove.

Mr. Hiram Wilson and wife are on a visit to Roanoke, Va.

J. B. Hutchison and Wm. Mattern were on the grass widower list for the past week 
and they refuse to be comforted.

Cyrus Bruner is taking in the beauties of Ocean Grove.
