A BRAKEMAN'S MISHAP.

Ambrose Bruner's Right Hand Mashed
by Cars on Monday Evening.

COLUMBIA, NOV. 12 – Ambrose Bruner, brakeman on crew No. 3, of the Pennsylvania 
railroad, met with a painful accident last evening in the east yards.  He had 
his right hand caught while coupling cars and severely mashed.  He was brought 
to the railroad hospital and Dr. Craig attended him.

John Richards was cutting wood this morning, when the axe caught on a clothes 
line.  The axe struck Richards on the head, cutting an ugly gash, which bled 
profusely.  Dr. Markel attended the injury.

A surprise party was held last night at the home of Frank Collier, which was 
largely attended, and all had a good time.

Rev. Theo. Stevens, of Pottsville, preached in the Methodist church last night.  
Rev. R. W. Humphriss, of Philadelphia, will preach to night.

The Metropolitan band will give a grand musical concert in the opera house on 
Thursday night.

The Cookman Chapel Mite society will hold a supper in the armory on Friday and 
Saturday evening.

J. A. Meyers and W. R. Given have gone to Washington city on a business trip.

Columbia Assembly No. 20, A. O. M. P. paid $1,000 yesterday to the three 
children of the late Harry Shell.

New stained glass windows were put in the front of Salem Lutheran church 
yesterday.

P. S. Brugh and family are on a visit to New York.


A Railroad Carpenter Hurt

Charles Jeffries, a railroad carpenter, who boards at the Exchange hotel, in 
this city, was at work on a bridge this morning on the Waynesburg branch of the 
Pennsylvania railroad this side of Springtown.  They were in the act of lowering 
the bridge, and Mr. Jeffries had hold of a tie when his right foot slipped and 
he fell down the bank, the tie falling with him and landing across his left leg, 
severely bruising both the knee and calf.  He was brought to Lancaster on the 
Lancaster Accommodation.
