(Lancaster, Pa.) 1864-1928: January 14, 1880 FROZEN TO DEATH. - Tragic Death of an Old Citizen. On Monday evening, about dusk, Martin Bollinger, a man about 75 years of age, who resided in Litiz, with his son, John Bollinger, left the house and said he was going to visit a neighbor. He did not return and it has since been ascertained that he went west from the village. At noon yesterday, John Bardoff and young Buch, scholars of Buch's school-house, on their way to Litiz, saw old Mr. Bollinger lying in one of David Buch's grain fields, about a mile west of Litiz. They ran to him and found him dead. He had rolled about in the snow, and in his hands were clutched bunches of the growing wheat, his hat under his arm, a huge stick used as a cane near by, and his pipe lying aside, as if he had died in agony. Deputy Coroner Reidenbach held an inquest and the jury concluded that he froze to death, having fallen in a fit while insane. Mr. Bollinger, who was an old citizen and a man of wealth lost his wife by death some fifteen years ago. He owned the first farm on the east side of the turnpike south of Litiz, and after his wife's death retired to the village, residing with his son. For four or five years his mind has been impaired and he has had a trustee over his estate. Lately he has exhibited unusual symptoms of lunacy, and it is supposed that he wandered off in a temporary aberration, fell and was frozen to death. He leaves three sons and a daughter, all married.
